- We're getting started in the kitchen! I know last week we ended with me in Menards, but ultimately IKEA had the look I want, at least for now hahaha. I was also swayed by the plethora of organization options they offer. So this week we take some detailed measurements, plan out both kitchens, and I share some of the demo that is underway!

I’m enjoying the series! I love home Reno’s. Excited to see the rest of the series. 🤩
Not sure if you’ve thought about it yet but I live in an older home in Cleveland and, while you have everything demoed, you might want to consider filling in gaps around water pipes , gas lines, electrical lines, etc. that enter the home from the outside in order to keep mice out. Just sayin. It’s a real thing here. You’ll thank yourself later . We’ve been working on doing that and it’s helped us tremendously.
On another note, I gotta buy that digital measuring tool.
That is a good point! As walls keep coming down I’ll mention that to the contractor!

You can add side cover panels in the ikea planner, too, that match the drawer fronts. And they have specific over-the-fridge wall cabinets that are deeper so easier to access.
Also! If you click on a cabinet you have placed in the planner, one of the options on the little menu that pops up is "position" and that will do the measuring for you from the selected cabinet to all neighboring cabinets and obstacles! Very handy and much faster than the "measuring tape" tool they have.
Hey, Celia! I'm so happy to be seeing this series! I recently built an Ikea kitchen and walk-in pantry in my home with Semi-Handmade fronts. I built the entire thing myself (outside of new electrical and plumbing), and I LOVE it. I did all drawers on the lowers, and I did quite a few customizations (like make a hutch from cabinets turned on their sides so that I could have an appliance garage, and cut down a tall pantry cabinet to. make a broom cabinet.) I'm hoping to post the reno on UA-cam when I stop being chicken to start my UA-cam journey!
I can't wait to see how your kitchens turn out! It's so exciting to watch. BTW, standard distance b/t countertop and upper cabinets is 18 inches.
I’d love to see how to made your appliance garage from IKEA cabinets! I’m looking to make an appliance garage for all our coffee appliances (we have a lot! 😅).
Well first of all get that video up so I can take some notes! I thought of semi handmade fronts too but x2 I think I’d kill the buffet lol! And yes! I had a call with an IKEA kitchen professional and she shed some light on several points that I’ll be sharing later. I was thinking of a hack for a broom closet, so again post that video! 😉

Love loving this!!!! I like the idea of the recessed pantry and upper cabinet over the fridge in both kitchens. Looking forward to seeing what you will do with the wall space on the other wall with the side window. I’d automatically just throw cabinets and mix of open shelves to maximize space and storage.

I'm just catching up-congratulations for owning this grand, huge historic home!I'm so exited, even more, as this won't be a pour-millions-in-it-rip out everything-erase -history-make it bland-finish in a 40 min episode on hgtv-renovation. As a person, who needs weeks to paint a wall or build a shelf IRL myself, I'm exhausted by just looking at the sheer amount of work needed 😅 from what I'm seeing on the screen, You both are smart,brave and hard workers, so it's clear you have what it needs for this in the long haul. I wish you and your family all the best and can't wait for the upcoming videos!
Looks fabulous! Options to consider for the protuding cabinet at the door would be to place upper cabinets (12in deep) all the way to the floor or use open shelving from ceiling to floor.

I am following every inch of the renovation. Really proud of the both of you for becoming home ownerships and investing in your own futures. I know you have alot of work to do and it is going to try all of your emotions but have fun, be creative and I know you will make it feel like a home. Oh, and since you have 5 bedrooms and very little closet space, why not put your Ikea Pax system in one of the rooms and make the room your closet. Anyway, have fun and thanks for sharing the costs.

Love that your doing all lowers with drawers! That's a great idea and wish I had done that! I do have ikea cabinets. We did these ourselves and I find the vibes to be difficult and levering doors to meet and close envy m evenly very problematic. Hopefully you’ll be having a contractor install? Or your a lot better than me at it 😂! I ended up getting different hinges at HD.
Hey Celia. It looks like things are really coming together for you guys. Thats awesome. I know you are firm with not adding an extra bathroom to stay within budget. Honestly i think you may regret it. My home only has 1 bathroom and if i could have my wish i would love to have another. Have you considered the idea of placing just a half bath on the wall that could be shared with your kitchen plumbing and just having a toilet and sink? If its possible to add one there that would cut down the cost tremendously, as you would just need the walls and doors. Im not sure that is even feasible but you may want to ask yourself in terms of visitors, do you really want folks roaming through your whole home to use the restroom. Lol, just my 2 cents.❤
These kitchens look great! I don't have an IKEA kitchen, but i have a comparable one available in my country. We have had it for 4 years now, and it has a 10 yr warranty and you can pretty much expect that to be the life span. We organise our household budget to replace all or part of it in another 6 yrs, but i'm not sure we'll need to. They're really solid.

This is so dope. I'm thinking about renovations and the Ikea kitchen planner was so intimidating. This was a really helpful tutorial. Like I always say, Celia, you always make projects feel more approachable and doable.
I kinda wish the upper and base cabinets by the door in the main kitchen were the bookshelves hack for a “pantry” space instead.

blessin : Celia & Fam, Congratulations on the house, I see you are redoing your kitchens, I wonder if you could open your kitchen more, like take down a wall for more space, add an Island for three chairs, on the wall facing living or dining room. The other unit kitchen has a better layout- you know the Owner’s unit has to have more design options for (lux comfort ) / I think you’re thinking of your NY kitchen Layout - very minimal- you can do a lot w/ this house for idea modern designs- good luck! - is that (Baby Cash👶🏽 )in the Target commercial in a onesie - it’s an old commercial I know - just asking ✌🏾🙏🏾🥰

18-20” is standard height for uppers above counters. Working on a kitchen ourself. Would encourage you to look at other flat pack options. Ikea upper sized seem limited

Good job Celia! We used a place in Texas called cabinets to go when we remodeled our kitchen. However, I have seen plenty of people use IKEA cabinets and have been quite happy.

Not to bemoan the kitchen structural Reno but could the entry way from the back door area into the kitchen be heightened or widened to make the space appear bigger without making any structural changes?
