  • The Dell EMC PowerEdge R750 is a 2U, dual-processor server based on Intel CPUs. What’s a little different this time around is that Dell Technologies wanted to profile the majority of their server line together, for the first time launching AMD and Intel-based systems in more-or-less tandem. What that means in terms of our review is that we have access to a pre-production R750, with firmware that is still undergoing refinement.

      Nah, they're still going to the secondary market, $60-$100 for a pair. 😂

    dell gave us pre release r650s they we're pretty good but buggy aF with beta bios haha. Was cool to test the ocp etc.

      That's the rub with pre-prod systems. We see weird crap like that all the time. We had an HPE in that was U.3 ONLY.

    does the raid nvme light up failed drives that arent Dell branded?

    • @StorageReview
      @StorageReview  3 роки тому

      Good question, we'll have to see if we can find one. We haven't done much storage testing yet as we're waiting for final firmware.

      Oof. That's very on the nose. It would be like dell to offer an amazing technology (albeit likely Avago developed) and enforce EMC level firmware lock down to 'ensure performance' with otherwise identical ODM drives from micron, Intel and Samsung with firmware that is probably otherwise identical except for branding.

      I wonder if it's based on the Broadcom 9560-8i - that seems to be one of the few cards out there that can handle nvme raid.

    Have you guys checked the performance of the front u.2 SSDs in RAID? I am planning on buying two R750 and i am curious about the performance

    • @StorageReview

      We don't have the RAID card in this particular system. Sorry we can't be of more help. It's been difficult to get systems from anyone this year.

      @@StorageReview i feel you. Demand is up but supply is down. Not a good time to buy anything these days.
      One more question though. My salesman told me if i fully populate the front flex bay with 24 u.2 drives i can only configure two 12 ssd arrays, but not one 24 ssd array, but i prefer to have one over two arrays. With that being said, when it comes to NVMe drives, is HW RAID better than SW RAID in performance? If not, i am thinking of ditching HW RAID and configure SW RAID to get all 24 drives in a single array.

      @@momumuhappy789 Have you seen our GRAID review? We have a video on it. The HW RAID cards are fine but kinda legacy at this point.

      @@StorageReview I've never seen or heard Netapp using Raid cards. We just got AFF250 and they claim good performance. How can they pull it off without dedicated cards while they're using Intel PCIe v3 most likely. So how does NVMe RAID without hardware support work ? Freenas, unraid ? You're comment about not using RAID cards blew me away ... Perhaps I just don't know enough. Well , that's why I'm here LOL

      @@dupajasio4801 storage vendors (read: SAN/Nas) all use software defined storage. They just don't call it that, they call it whatever OS they name their systems on. 90% of SANs use direct connected storage and/or HBAs directly to their OS, and in the OS they allow users to set or force a specific 'protection' of data that is a parallel of what RAID is.
      At the end of the day, RAID is more frequently used in stand alone systems that don't aggregated disks in a cluster, or leverage a shared storage system. But they couldn't handle nvme, with the rare exception of things like Intel's 'raid' on motherboards that could do raid1 on nvme drives (the OG boss cards tbh might use that same concept) - supermicro offers it for m.2 nvme drives and it's super helpful but limited.
      This brings RAID and nvme back to the masses.
