  • Hi there Doug Stuman with IT Creations. We finally got the Dell EMC PowerEdge MX7000, Dell’s replacement for the M1000 Enclosure. This is a 7U chassis with support for up to 8x single-width server sleds, four double-wide sleds or a combination of the two. If you will recall, the M1000 blade server chassis is a 10U behemoth released in 2012. It offered support for more blades, but this one, even at 7U still offers better performance and capabilities in a smaller space. It’s also designed to support up to 3x new CPU generations from both AMD and Intel, but so far only Intel Xeon Scalable processors are supported. It’s a cost-effective flexible architecture that’s easy to scale-out offering on-demand allocation of compute, storage and networking pools.
Yes, this review of the Dell MX7000 enclosure is a little late in coming but it’s not like we qualify for review units from Dell. And I have tried. Oh yes, I have tried. Modular systems are not new to Dell as there are a few others still in the fold, although admittedly

My Dell rep told me that they are discontinuing the line of MX Chassis, Blades and Switches. End of sale will be CY2026. The current generation (gen16) will be the last. I loved this platform. It is unfortunate that they never got good market saturation.

Got a comment that UA-cam has removed for unknown reasons that I thought I might address from @Andrew Gurinovich.
"Andrew Gurinovich commented: "8 blades in 7u don't sound that space-effective and the storage is local to each node?"
The advantages of a blade server such as the MX7000 is that it provides Power, cooling, management, and I/O all at the chassis level, whereas the blades just provide the compute, memory and storage. It saves on space because of the integrated and redundant I/O, storage controllers, and management option as there is no need for additional switches. Storage is provided in each server node but additional storage can be added with a storage only server blade that can be assigned as a resource to all blades in the chassis, assigned to a single server node, or remotely accessed by other servers in the network. With support for 3 generations of CPUs it is also cost effective because you are not buying the entire server with power, cooling and networking cards because those are already included at the chassis level. It makes for a rapid return on investment (ROI) and enables businesses to expand capabilities as technology improves without a much larger expenditure. With hot-swap nodes there is also no downtime assuming the network is configured to take up the slack if one of the server nodes is removed or replaced. And with no backplane, which in previous versions would act as the intermediary circuit board between the blades and the I/O, storage and management fabrics, the MX7000 blades connect directly to the fabrics., Makes for no downtime associated with switching out blades as new technology becomes available” Hope that helps Andrew, I'm not sure why your comment was removed and cannot be responded to directly, our apologies.

I have a Dell poweredge r720 2.5 16 bay model. I recently bought 2 new IMB System X 600 GB 6gbs 10K sas drives. When I put them into my poweredge r720 they have both the solid green light and blinking green light and when I go into the Perc H710 mini bios it says that they're both blocked. Is there anyway to fix this issue?

OMG, this video is awesome. My employer (xxxx) is sending us to do smarthands on quite a few of these beasts. I emphasize "smart hands" because I am NOT willing to make any decisions with a production system holding customers data, (Dell engineers decide, not me). When something goes wrong the first questions is "who is responsible for this mess"? I give them the Support's engineer name, not mine. Anyway it is hard to find quick but detailed overview of this system but you delivered that here. I will be forwarding this info to my co-workers. TY!

    M1000e: I was able to insert 16 independent half-servers.
    MX7000: I can only plug in 8 full-height servers.
I don't need that much memory (x TB) on a server blade. I only need 200 GB per server. Your blades therefore take up too much space. I don't understand why you offer so many memory slots. Most trading software vendors use very little memory (
