Hello! Great video, thanks for sharing. I just came across a 242B in northern Chile. It has no globe unfortunately. How difficult could it be to find the one you show. I have seen some others but they are made un China. I would rather prefer something canadian or U.S.
Nice video! If you suspect a dirty tank you can make an inspection lamp with a small white LED and two flashlight batteries in series. Using a small funnel add a pack of BBs and fill tank 1/4 full with denatured alcohol and tighten fuel cap. Place tank in a shallow pan with hot water in it until it is very warm then gently shake and swirl tank for about 15 minutes. This should scrub out the rust and gunk. Drain the denatured alcohol and shake out all the BBs. Now rinse tank with fresh denatured alcohol, drain and inspect. It looks like your pump leather is not sealing properly. Close the check valve needle valve and pump...you should feel lots of resistance. If not get a new leather. Use lots of oil an a new leather and a Q-tip saturated with oil and lube the pump barrel as well. Hoppes gun oil works well. I have a 242C and two 249 Scout lanterns that run on kerosene.Old Coleman Parts probably carries the small gasket for the fuel cap if a new one is needed.
This is a fantastic video and I’m going to put it to work I’ve just picked up two nickel plated lanterns and I am going to restore them thank you for your info
I'm so glad it could be helpful, its why I made it. I hope your lanterns burn bright! If you have any questions let me know. I am on Instagram and DMs there work well. @crookedlantern
@@crookedlantern3810 you're adding value to the internet already. I had my 249 professionally restored three weeks ago after having last used it as a kid about 1988. Now I can see what went into it. And some of the things I probably did wrong in the past. Also gives me an idea on what to do to resuscitate my others. Keep going and thanks.
Nicely done... another possibility, is the foot valve is gummed up, you have low volume coming out of the font. The normal heat/cool down from operation can cause the bend, if the casting apeture is snug on the top of the generator.
Nice video. I have a 242c, which belonged to my dad. Mine is in good shape but now I'm going to use some steel wool to remove a bit more of the oxidation. I was told it was better to use a smaller mantle with these models. Do you agree or what do you recommend? Thanks!

Hello, I just bought a Canadian 242B. Those two screws from my lantern are stuck and rusty. Could you please give me some tips for removing (add coke, vinegar, wd40 on them..?)
Good video. I would like to get information on a 242 check valve which I’d slightly different from new ones. This check valve can be disassembled and appears to have a felt block in it. Can I rebuild, and if so where would I get parts. Or will 0ne of the newer styles work?
When the leather ages it can look like felt. You can dissaemble the rod and replace the leather cup. It's fairly strait forward. The cups are available from old coleman parts or ebay.
@@crookedlantern3810 thanks. I watched the video for the 220F tear down, I think it was. I learned a great deal Look forward to watching and learning more!

Well, leaks can come from the cap, usually. However if it won't pressurize at all I would first check the pump cup, then the valve at the bottom of the pump tube.
Where the cleaning tip comes through or the nut that secures it to the valve? The tip is just snug, the nut to the valve will be a little tighter. If it's not tight enough it could leak, if it's to tight you could damage it. There isn't any torque specs that I'm aware of. I usually just just get it tight then a 1/4 turn or so.
@@crookedlantern3810 the tiny nut that the needle goes through. I was just curious. I have to 220e. No leaks so far just waiting for the fuel I ordered off of Amazon so I can do a test light. I actually ordered a new generator and a new tip cleaner stem ( reproduction) off of old Colemen parts. but I might not even need to use them if the test light goes well.
@@Lasurge1982 no its just a little piece of brass. Sometimes that hole can get blown out, so replacing "just the tip" can save replacing the whole genny.. however these days it's usually just easier to replace the generator. The packing in the generator and the size of the hole is really what controls the fuel pressure from the tank once it's lit.
The pump chamber is not pressurized, the check valve prevents pressure from building against the pump. If you are getting resistance then fuel vapor is escaping the tank and can be extremely dangerous. Discontinue using the lantern until that is fixed.

Thanks for being slow and comprehensive. Good job.
Thanks, a little overdue on new installments. Gonna work on that!

Saludo de Peru de que años son estas lamparas
Is rebuilding the double mantle that you did on your video similar to how I would check and clean and a 200 a
Somewhat. They are different though. So it helps to know how to do both. The mechanics are essentially the same.

What was the cause of the leak??
I’m have this same lantern and it won’t pressurize.

How tight does the small screw on top of the generator have to be?

Those two screws from the pump section I meant.

How can you tell if the graphite seal is bad?
just by looking

Your not building pressure. Your pump is not working correctly it should become hard to pump
