Real easy to cross thread the cap on the parts well-nice lanterns-loud compared to the regular Colemans.
Thank you. I have an Optimus 8R that I purchased about 1975. I haven't used it in a long time. Your video is a great refresher course on the details of operation.
Model Number is Stamped under the fuel tank tabs that hold it on the stove.
If you want to make a profit….I’ll give you $3 for it 🤣🤣
Show everyone where the wick goes... lol
Man. I've been fighting mine since I got it. But that's because its not a coleman. Thank you for sharing. Mine runs light a top now
Well this seems like a good way to light my garage on fire. Sarcasm aside, very informative video. Thank you
Guys can you fuking imagine,I live in Kenya, and while sorting the house ,I found this stove but mine is in green and 3 crown logo on it too ! It's rusty but am hell bent on reviving this legend! Don't know how my dad got this but,it's mine now 😂 always wanted vintage stuff especially portable cooker like this one 😂
@@dreamhiker1109 that's cool
I got a Svea123r back in the 1970s, when in the Boy Scouts, and after almost 50 years it is still going strong! Was poking around for things I do not need on eBay and spotted a pristine 8r for $120 so placed a bid and won. Looking forward to using this stove with my Sigg aluminium kettles.
What kind of fuel does it use?
What kind of fuel?
Roger, thanks.....my nose is covid 19 out...... much apperciated.
Hey, I was just given one today a 1962 202....what type of fuel does it burn? what is in ther smells like kerosene......
@@kurtak9452 white gas the preffered fuel.
Thanks for the info. I just got a 2/53, and it passed all the checks! Thanks!
I recently got a Coleman 500. The 502 was easy to use, but it's much easier to control the heat. I'm going to get rid of my 508A and use this as my main stove.
I’m convinced that the roar of a Colman lantern kills depression
Great Video!
I really enjoyed watching this video. I did the same job 3 days before watching this video and I struggled wrestling with the lower spring and the push bar. But after the shoes, spring and push bar are together, it’s all down hill. Unless you have a defective drum! I felt bad for you. What a pain. Good job with the video. I hope nobody follows along without watching the whole vid! 😅
Nice to see the struggle. Oddly encouraging for those of us who also struggle…
Excellent thank you
Nice video. I have a 242c, which belonged to my dad. Mine is in good shape but now I'm going to use some steel wool to remove a bit more of the oxidation. I was told it was better to use a smaller mantle with these models. Do you agree or what do you recommend? Thanks!
Great stoves for winter. Nice job showing it. Used the 8R and 111B ( kept an 8R for trips) , and are still used by some EU military. BernieDawg online does a super job restoring these. Looks like you're suing too much gas to start the stove. Try just about 1/2 fill in the cup to warm it. JMNSHO
That is not the right model
I have a picture of it, but i can't figure out how to send it to you
Back in the early 90s, I was an arctic instructor for that Marine Corps and we actually used these stoves for awhile before finally getting the Coleman single burner stoves. The Optimus stoves we were issued were really old and you could easily burn your tent down if you weren’t careful.
Over 14 minutes to describe the 3 step drawing on the package! Yes indeed
Wow ! 😊
Close the spindle all the way, now put the jet cleaner in, now open the spindle while holding the jet cleaner down with a pencil that has a rubber on the other end, now open the spindle slowly until you hear 4 clicks, now close the spindle clockwise, now replace the jet (making sure that it is not blocked) now turn the spindle anti-clockwise then you should see the pricker come up in the jet, now close it and prime it using the primer bowl with meths, (do-not over fill the tank, half way should be enough. And you have the heat shield round the wrong way. I told Bluegrass Bushcraft this trick as I repair and replace parts for customers free of charge, just pay for postage. ENJOY
radius 46 was another similar stove
Do yiu do repair work on the Optmus huntr8
My 1952 252A Coleman MilSpec does include a lighting instructions decal. Mine was an unfired lantern purchased at an antique store. It came with six mantles, seven including the one on the burner, plus a spare pricker, wrench, two spare generators, spare leather pump cup and a couple other odds and ends. It also has a standard 220-style globe instead of the quadrant glass. It takes 10 pumps to start and 5 more to run for 9 hours. Also, you cannot crack the founts on these. Coleman tested their founts to a maximum burst pressure of 1k psi. 30 pumps only puts about 20-30psi.
I thought the generator was the inner brass verticle tube beside the mantle that feeds the metering valve
I was just reading an old instruction book from the 1920’s for a quick lite lamp and it says to turn the valve “a turn” to light the mantles and then “close again quickly”. It goes on to say “when the mantles begin to dim, open valve”. It explains that failure to close the valve quickly after lighting the mantles will cause them to “flare up”. I would expect this to be true for all Coleman gas lamps/lanterns despite their age since they all work with vaporized gas. For lamps used in the home back in the day this would be really important!
Good tip for use in the home. This is the first time I've this, thanks for the info.
what model stove is that?
LMAO had a good laugh made me think of the time my neighbor threw gasoline on his BBQ only difference was his hair was on fire by the time we got him put out he looked like Mr Clean😮😮😮
So it takes the diesel fuel?
Dude!! Use a small crescent!!
The cap gasket is NOT a seal, it is a gasket. DO NOT use an O-ring.
What are the price value on a 1940s military Coleman's lantern that runs on gas
I am using premium shell ultra diesel in my optimus 00 because it has the detergents in. The more I use it the cleaner the insides of the pipes get
Now all you need is some Vietnam era music. Paint it black and riders on the storm
Amazon may have the correct flat rubber washer.
Did you know that you can use holts brake and clutch cleaner for fuel...?
Hello I don't see where you mention what model the Coleman is? Thanks, S

Thanks for sharing. What fuel do these burn ?
Thanks for sharing. Here in Ireland and UK the pressurised lanterns are mainly made by Tilley or Bialaddin of which I have several. The Coleman are much less common and have a bewildering number of models and fuel types used, because of this I’ve stayed away from them. Recently however I got a Coleman 639 kerosene lantern, in perfect condition, still in box, with instructions, spanner and even a warranty. However, seeing as the lantern is dated 1973 that may not still be valid ! Keep em lit.
Thats not how you light the stove
They’re really cool . I’m unlikely to see one of these where I live so thanks for sharing. What fuel does it burn.
Thanks for in-depth content. I’ve never seen one of these lanterns…… love the spare parts storage. Now I want one.
Ive never seen such muppetry . 😂.
Used this in Outward Bound excursion. For high altitude, avg >12,000 feet, we also used a pressure pump attached to the can port. Worked great.
Did it come with one? Or is it common to find one that'll fit
