George Lucas has gone on record saying if Qui Gon survived Sidious never would have been able to turn Anakin. That’s why it’s called ‘Duel of the Fates’. It quite literally changed Anakin and the galaxy’s fate.

Funny thing was, I didn't know as a child that Darth Sidious was Palpatine. I knew they were played by the same actor, didn't know they were the same character.
When I was 14 and AOTC came out, I was coming up with this theory that Sidious would like capture Palpatine and transfer his "Force Essence" into him, lol.

TPM shows why Anakin is so important, his strong attachment to his mom, why Obi-Wan wasn't right teacher to him, why he hates Tatooine, Jedi rules, Palpatine becoming chancellor, world building, etc...And of course, podracing and Darth Maul.

Do you disagree with Anakin being part of the Order, or do you disagree with Obi-Wan being the one to train Anakin? I ask this, because a lot of things had they not happen, means that there would never be an opportunity to bring balance to the Force. 🧐

@@kimmypfeiffer9130 Okay, that bit of information you gave didn’t solve a simple math problem. Plus, I wasn’t talking to you specifically, but I did ask two questions aimed at the person who made a point about Obi-Wan Kenobi not being the right person to train Anakin. I just wanted to further know THEIR position on Anakin and the Jedi Order. So if you mute or disregard “the prophecy,” which is a big part of the story… then with all due respect, you shouldn’t have commented under this thread. 🧐

    Enjoyed that, nice job.
As a child I only really visually watched Star Wars, I had seen the OG movies first but didn’t know who anikan was as i wasn’t paying enough attention to the dialogue. I remember seeing Palpatine and sideous going ‘hey man, I think that’s the same person’, this wasn’t until the clone wars. Then the dread set in like, oh shit this guys WAY better then any individual in the galaxy then anyone by a long ass shot!
Seeing anikan turn was one of the most impactful character experiences of my life, didn’t have any idea what revenge of the sith was going show.
George says the movies are made to be a visual and sound experience and I would agree a lot with that. Obviously duel of the dates is SSS tier. But like you mentioned, the pod racers sound just so good.. the sound makes them feel alive. I also like the sounds used while kenobi and skywalker are chasing the changeling in the clone wars, the charges that go off from Jango in the serial dogfight against kenobi. Special mention of the soundtrack played in the anikan kenobi fight.
The politics in my adult years make the universe feel like a character all on its own, when we first meet it, the universe is under Turmoil politically and in trade, with large groups making power plays. As you go through the trilogy. The universe and all it’s inhabitants experience war and it changes everyone and everything. Which later goes on to show a step further with order 66. I bet no one EVER thought we would see, or close enough to see children get killed with a light saber, let alone the main character be the one to do it.
By the end we see the gears and cogs of the universe via industry, military and political means. The universe is changed in its most fundamental ways from the ground up. The good guys lost and they were not even close to stopping what was coming. It’s such a fun but heartbreaking story.

Personally I think this movie has my favorite alien/creature designs of any Star Wars thing, ever. Since Lucasfilm had a much larger budget for this movie, they could really start to experiment with more inhuman and strange looking dudes. I especially love all the goofy reptilian-ish podracers. Plus they use a great mix of pretty charming looking 1999 cgi and practical effects.

@carlhagens Big Phantom Menace fan here. I'm wondering if you've read (or perhaps listened to the audiobook) of Darth Plagueis? Yes, its pre Disney cannon but it was Lucas approved. Its essentially Episode 0 and sets up all of star wars, and even has some overlap with Phantom Menace. Id be interested to see another video of your thoughts on Phantom Menace (and beyond) with the added layer of the Events of Darth Plagueis. IMO Disney has truly missed the mark but not bringing Plagueis story to the big screen.

The marketing for the Phantom Menace made it extremely obvious that Palpatine was the Emperor. The toys came with holographic card that showed who the legacy characters were in the original movies. They could have been a lot more subtle with it but George isn’t exactly known for subtlety.

I actually wish there were more political scenes in the Prequels, but i do understand that Lucas would have totally lost the casual fan.
The reason i love the political stuff is it gives so much context to the Original Trilogy. As a person who saw the OT in 77, 80, 83, they are my favorite movies. Now there are another 3 movies that flesh out the OT even more?
While The Phantom Menace has pacing problems in the first half of the movie, the story sets everything up in 2,3,4,5,6.
Anakin needed a father figure, not a brother in Episode 2 and 3. QuiGon would have been a father figure, Obiwan ended up being his brother. The death of QuiGon goes over the heads of so many fans as it changed the direction of the galaxy.
Padme is a Queen at 14 years old, as it’s no different than being a child actor in Hollywood. It’s not a normal childhood and you can see the mistakes she makes in Episode 2 and 3 as she yearns for a normal life with Anakin. He tells her he slaughtered tuskens, Obiwan tells her he slaughtered all at the Jedi Temple. What does she do on Mustafar? She confronts Anakin….sort of. She, Obiwan and The Jedi Council always looked the other way at his behavior until it was too late.
Senator Palpatine in The Phantom Menace is a brilliant plot point by Lucas. That was essentially the reveal of the Trilogy, in that the Emperor we knew back in 1983 was legally elected like Hitler? To see him as a lowly Senator in The Phantom Menace to the Emperor in Return of the Jedi is one best arcs for a villain in the history of movies.
That’s why The Phantom Menace is so important. It’s all there in Episode 1 for each character to fail. Every main character in Episode 1 eventually dies in the next 5 movies because they were short-sighted or arrogant. Even Yoda dies believing Luke must kill Vader and The Emperor. He was still thinking like the Prequel Jedi Council. Luke and Leia are the only level headed characters in the Saga who go against the grain of everything setup in Episode 1 and finally succeed in Episode 6.

I think this is an underrated film. I think Jar Jar is a good choice to keep young people engaged. It lived up to the marketing (Pizza Hut crushed this) and the hype for a 12 year old me.
I think CGI is well utilized in this film (heavily but if you can use a new technology to explore your world go ahead). And yes, the Maul lightsaber fight (Duel of the Fates) is the best part.

I was born in the middle of the OT. You’re 16 years younger than I am so it’s understandable that a lot of your fans didn’t know Palpatine/Sidious were one and the same.
Us older fans already knew it by being older fans.
We had cliff notes on the Clone Wars and how Palpatine rose to power. Even though in the 80’s and early 90’s we didn’t know who Sidious was because George had not created that side of the character yet

While you're focusing on the positive, you might as well talk about how Jar Jar & Anakin have parallel arcs. From being a 'pathetic life form' that Qui-Gon picked up to becoming extremely influential in the fate of the galaxy through Palpatine's manipulation disguised as what Padme would want (emergency powers to authorize the clone army/betraying the Jedi to save Padme's life), even down to having extremely good luck/instinct in surviving in battle against & defeating the Trade Federation army. I can only imagine what was meant for Jar Jar's story until angry fans shouted down Lucas for creating Jar Jar in the first place.

One thing I'm still confused about and think of is, if Anakin was created from Plagious or Sidious, was that done so specifically? Or was it just a chance occurrence and the jedi just happened to find him? I get the impression Sidious didn't even know otherwise if he did then why didn't he go snatch Anakin up when he was a baby or something? I kind of saw it as, every action has a reaction or every push the universe pushes back and with the darkside being manipulated to create life per say, the force as a way to counter that created Anakin.

That's a tough one. I think you could really go either way. Most people that grew up with the originals will say watch the originals first because that's how they did, and so that the "I am your father" twist will be a huge surprise. However, if you watch the prequels first, you see things play out in real time and now the twist becomes Anakin turning bad and Palpatine being Sidious. So you get good surprises either way. But that's assuming they don't have any prior knowledge whatsoever. If they do know about Vader being Luke's father and all that, then I would say prequels first.

And I like that midi-chlorians are no longer talked about after the prequels because, by that point, the knowledge had been forgotten. After the prequels, the Force is truly a mystical and religious experience because knowledge of midi-chlorians was lost.

Phantom Menace was sooo close to being a Masterpiece! One thing stood in the way... George Lucas was surrounded by "yes men" too afraid to speak up about his bad ideas.
Dialogue - you suck George. I get the dynamics you are trying to build here, but they can't actually say that. Just let us make a couple tweaks, and it'd be great.
CGI - looks terrible bro. Let's scale it back. Maybe hide it a bit with ominous fog or rain?
JarJar - let's dial down his childishness by 20%. He's coming across as pretty annoying and breaking up the universe immersion.
None of that happened. They all looked at each other when Anakin says "Arr yeu an ANGel?" and no one had the balls to speak up and tell George, no offense, i like where you're going with this, but that sounds dumb.

exactly...the first two movies, star wars especially, the actors, and his wife, pushed back and we got some great films...it all went wrong, in my opinion, the second luke uttered, 'leia is my sister'...i hated it then and i hate it to this day...because i was such a fan, and i knew that george was tired of doing star wars per an interview with carrie fisher during the summer while return was in theaters..he wrote himself into a corner, needed something to push luke over the edge, and said 'fuck it, leia is the sister, done! and i'm never doing another star wars movie'...also, as an owner of the art of star wars that contained the script, luke was an 18 year old farm boy and in the novelization of the film, leia was 16..bothe written by george himself...and don't even try to explain that shit away with the solar cycles are different on tattooine and alderaan BS...THEY WERE NOT MEANT TO BE BROTHER AND SISTER! and i know i'm speaking english when i say, that 'twin sister' was cool...just the twin sister should have been someone we never met ...'the other he spoke of is your twin sister' luke: 'where is she? how will i find her?' 'the force has guided her destiny as it has guided yours.' and luke is just happy that he's not alone with his burden....he confides in leia that his twin sister exists and that if he doesn't make it back, leia has to find her and that's why leia is the only hope for the rebellion...he also gets to make the sacrifice and CHOOSE to leave the woman he loves for a higher calling, *making him a tragic hero and keeping the love triangle dynamic and drama going...so that when he confronts vader, the dialog doesn't have to change, if vader can read his thoughts, 'your thoughts betray you, your feelings for them *your friends are strong especially for...' luke is thinking of leia and their last conversation and her promise to find his 'SISTER! so, you have a twin SISTER!' everything i've just said and argued for the last 4 decades VALIDATED in this link!
