  • Imagine a rare, large, and heavy boombox with a 12" television, a 4-band stereo radio, a cassette player/recorder, and a ton of input and output jacks. You would have imagined this Panasonic TR-1200X but not sure how easily one would transport it.

I also owned a Panasonic TR-1200X TV with 4-Band Stereo Radio Cassette Recorder. I bought it while on a day trip in London from a hi-fi goods store called McDonalds in Tottenham Court Rd in 1981. It cost £250. Today, Tottenham Court Rd is still synonymous with electrical goods. I met popular UK Radio DJ Dave Lee Travis [RIP] in the store that day.

Thanks for sharing those memories! Being in the states, I had to look up Tottenham Court Road. I see how famous it is even outside of the hi-fi stores that lined up the road. Some interesting "dark history" occurred there too. I found a video from 1978 that someone captured a lot of the hi-fi stores on that road: ua-cam.com/video/BpP0y4-URUg/v-deo.html

@@VintageGamingMemories Thanks, I just watched the footage. By the way, I also had a double cassette player, with a radio. These types of music players were regarded as portable but some were so big they were nicknamed 'Boom Boxes' or ''Ghettoblasters'
If you 'Google' Sharp GF-777' you'll see the 'mother' of all 'ghettoblasters'. My buddies were uber-jealous. It was as wide as a two-passenger bus seat and as tall as the back of a bus seat. I just noticed your handle 'Vintage Gaming Memories' so here's my vintage gaming memory...
I remember needing to move frequently, from one place to the next, after a break-up. I got fed up continually 'dragging' my electrical gear with me.
One of these moving days, after being informed by my 'friend' that we could use his car (not a truck or van) to make one trip, I left both the 'Sharp' and the 'Panasonic' behind. But that was not all I left behind.
I also left behind a ZX Spectrum 48k, a Sinclair ZX Spectrum +2, a Sinclair ZX Spectrum +2A, and a Sinclair ZX Spectrum +3 with Disc Drive, plus a boatload of peripherals, controllers, joysticks, etc, and over 300 Sinclair Spectrum computer cassette games,
I was also an avid reader and had collected dozens of 'Spectrum magazines. The best of these was a series of mags dedicated to Spectrum computing called 'Crash Magazine'. This title had a short run but even today is highly sought after.
There were other monthly publications including 'Spectrum Computing', 'Sinclair Programs', and 'Your Spectrum'. I'd collected these for years, and by this time I'd amassed over two hundred magazines. I left these behind too.
Since that day, leaving all of my 'precious' music & gaming memory-makers behind, I never bought another gaming console. In fact, I haven't 'gamed' since that day.
I bought a gaming PC Laptop many years later but this wasn't for gaming. I'd begun researching the Worldwide Web intensely, so much so, that I'd often have over forty tabs open, at once. I needed a faster computer to handle all those open web pages. Unfortunately. that laptop went missing.
So I bought another (not-gaming) laptop a couple of years ago and continued my research, which has enabled me to begin writing a series of guides that will introduce teenagers to the income and employment opportunities now available via the Web.
Now that's a gaming memory you can add to your archives. Thanks for reading.

I saw this in the mall when I was a kid back in the '80s and I wanted one so bad. I thought it was so rad!! Lol

Wow. I totally missed seeing these in the 80s. I might have been too focused on the gaming side, lol. To think, there are even those with the record player built in too.

I remember seeing boom boxes with much smaller TVs back in the day. I can't remember if it was 80s or 90s.

That might be true since the Sony Watchman came out in 1982. The technology for TV on the go in a small package was definitely there. I think this was made to be big on purpose, lol.

Saw one of these today at a vintage shop but it was a national brand .. exactly the same.. i think.
It was priced at $350 aussie dollars

350 is a good number because I paid $350 USD for mine and an additional $190 to have it shipped, lol. National same as Panasonic so that's a nice deal at $350 AUD if the condition is good. I wish I had a local option 🙂 . Did you get it?

Hi! I actually found this exact unit from an old abandoned house many years ago. Needless to say it is super dirty, but it does work! Any ideas what to use to get out the external grime off without rubbing it too hard and damaging it? Thanks a million!

    • @VintageGamingMemories

Wow! Congrats, that's a great find! For directly on plastic like this, I've been sucessful with using the Clorox (Bleach Free) disinfecting wipes. There's no bleach in it and kills germs too 🙂. I don't rub it hard on the surface. Just a good wipe back and forth and then a terrycloth to dry/wipe off the saturated grime after it's wet. It seems to loosen it nicely. I haven't had any issues with using it. I am however careful with cleaning around decals or stickers but for this boombox you should be good. Afterwards, since it's plastic, I did a light wipe with the Novus 1 Clean, Shine and Protect. There's a LOT of plastic on this to clean so I feel your pain. Love to see how it turns out.
