  • Out on the latest h-brace project today where I was replacing wooden h braces with pipe ones in last weeks video. So I'll share that with you and the new firefighting rig I'm using on this project but I also wanted to answer a commonly asked question. How do line up pipe saddles when building pipe fence? All that in this video.

Never too old to learn something new; and you are always ahead of the game when you are welding around grass or brush, to wet the area down,& if you really want to keep the area wet without getting it too muddy & still keep it safe enough to not start a wildfire, use a couple of ounces of dish washing soap in your water tank; it won't hurt your pump or equipment & will keep the grass & brush damp for an hour or more & if a grass fire does start, the soap mixture will help extinguish the fire faster & is biodegradable. When I was just starting out in a small volunteer fire dept. we didn't have a budget & paid for the gas in the fire trucks from our own pockets; we couldn't afford the fancy fire fighting foam that the other departments were using,so we would carry a bottle of " sunrise" dishwasher soap in the old fire truck & add a few ounces to 50 gallons of water & we had a " foam" that would work as well as the fancy expensive foam the bigger departments used! So keep up the good work & great video's, like you say, learn something every day!

Thank you so much for everything you do that helps us: nothing but Texas love, brother for you and your family. Thank you for sharing the pipe fence work you have been doing on the farm because that gave me new ideas to build a better pipe fence. I want to tell you how your video has help me in practicing on the pipeline test I have been working on it and watching all your videos and getting better day by day till the pipe line start back up again. Ross, please share all the new things in your shop because this does help me a lot with unique ideals and do a better job. I have been buying all my pipe liner tools that you listed and getting some cheaper right now. I went to west Texas, picked up a Bob King bed, and got it ready to put it on a 2013 f350. I think this is the right time to buy. The wielding bed does need some Austin Ross upgrade on it. We love you and your family, brother. God bless.

Been building pipe fences in Texas for a few years. Easiest way I have aligned pipe for cutting saddles is simply use a chaulk line. Center it by eye on one side and pull the chaulk line to the other end and line it up centered on the end (by eye again) and poop the chaulk line. The template I use has a small gap in it and this is what I use to align my chalk line to the saddle cut for both sides. Easy and quick.
Love your videos. Keep up the good work. I have used a lot of your techniques in my fence building and has made me a better welder to deliver a better product.

Well as of yesterday i now have my GED! Less than 48 hours after I got my GED I enrolled into a welding school and got accepted!!! Thanks to your videos and others videos throughout the past 3 years ive gained a never ending urge for wanting to learn more about welding. Thank you so much man!

    I use a Torpedo Level.
You clamp you pipe to your stands, set the level on top of the pipe, get it level and drag it perpendicular to the pipe.
Dragging it leaves a little scratch and I go off of that.

I use 2-7/8 tubing for the posts, then I cut 4 inch long pieces of 2-7/8 with a saddle on one end. For the cross members I use 2-3/8 which slips right into the short 2-7/8 pieces. This saves me a lot of time because I don't have to line up the saddles, the cross member length doesn't have to be exact, I do less grinding, and I get a good fit for welding. I make the 4 inch long pieces at the shop which is more convenient that in the field.
I built corrals the same way.

Using vice grip large mouth pliers on the 2 7/8” posts will make life a lot easier. None of that “quick tack “ one end while holding pipe up. Your back will last longer
I’ve welded a bunch of 4 rail pipe on my own land and found a four bale round bale trailer makes a great pipe trailer
Weld up three 12” lengths of 2” angle on one edge and load trailer with 32’ drill stem
Flip up pipe on angle at one end then the other and you’re ready to start cutting saddles
    No falling over pipe stands

Here is a combination of advice from several old guys but basically its this
You have to do something for 20 years before you know what your doing.
You have to do something for 50 years before you start to become an expert.
You have to do something for over 70 years before you finally become a master.
But the point is there is always something to learn.

Looks good. I like that you have a water tender for fire suppression. On that water pump, you need a recirculating valve on the output of the pump to increase its life and also the helps with water hammer issues on shutting the water hose off quickly…
Thanks for the welding tips and tricks…

    Hello Mr. Ross.
Another good video. I think giving the saddle a good eye ball is the best and fastest way to line it up. Most of the time I’m building fence by the foot. Getting the center finder out and marking true center just takes up to much time. Burning 5/32 rod will fill in the gap if your off a little. Work hard and be safe!

I built a dining room table for myself a few years ago, I used my body sitting in a chair to come up with the height I thought was most comfortable and the width I wanted on the end where I sit. Then I lined up 4 chairs and had my brother in law and nephew sit in them with acceptable arm space to their sides, then I sat in a chair and in this line, then my nephew moved to the other chair next to me, then I added 2' and that is the length. It ended up being a big heavy table that has always had alot of room to breathe around it.

You should check out " hydraulic ram pump " for your water supply. Really cool, requires no power just a water supply. Two check valves and a stand pipe. Will not have to worry about running out of fuel for the pump or running it without water running through it.

The way I line up saddles. I cut one saddle grind to fit. Take a short length of pipe that fits the saddle, hold it in place in the saddle roll the saddle til the length of pipe is vertical (use a level if you want) go to the other end and mark it where the center of your saddle template
needs to be cut, grind, continue.

When we are fabbing pipe on decent level ground, and continuously moving pieces on and off the jack stands, I use my hand on my side to measure about the right height to set the other jacks.(saves a little bit of time.)

The proper term is called an "Eyechromiter" I don't know how many times you put something up plumb and level against a slanted background and it looks like it's out of plumb. A speed square and a string line is the easiest way. I recommend to always bring a level to any job sight you are sending a quote too in order to check what you're building to is plumb. One last note. I'm old school too, but you have mastered Arc and Torches. Plasma Cutters have been around a long time and if you want to learn something new, I recommend Plasma. Your torches won't be jealous. Flux core in wind is a money and time saver.

Do you have any tricks for measuring the correct length of cross brace so the saddles on each end fit correctly? For example I cut my saddle on one end and measure from the throat, align my saddle clamp where the mark should be for the proper length. Is there a faster way?

Couple ways to fins center. With a small framing square and a torpedo level. Put the square on top the pipe and one level it, mark half of whatever the diameter is..... if its 1 1/2" pipe, which is really 1 7/8" you would mark 15/16".
With a level and a tape measure, hold the level verticle against the side of the pipe, hold your tape against the level, and mark half the diameter. That way is a little harder, kinda need 3 hands.
Easiest way is with a center finder with a spring loaded center punch.

I really miss fiiting, but I also like being a designer now.
