- Sharing how I cut, fit (saddle) a dead man brace for pipe fence. Many people like to use this type of brace on hilly terrain but it’s useful in other applications as well. You can use this same method for any custom angles you want to use with bracing pipe fence.

Love watching your work and ethics I’m 68 never gets old brother welding pipe line has tanked rite now hang in there!
Thanks for the video. One tip might be to use a tape measure with the magnet on the end to hold the tape against the pipe. I usually don’t like them, but sometimes they are handy. I usually call the short end of the cut the heel, and the long end the toe. So in this case, the heel to toe length. Keep up the great teaching.
That’s great advice, I was taught to leave it a little longer because it’s easier to to trim it than to throw it out. Always make the next one better than the last one, if you don’t learn something as you go along, you’re not paying attention.
Learnin something everyday, I love that quote. I really enjoy watching your videos. Always very educational and so motivating.
You always make things look so easy
Always learn something new from your videos and I’ve been around for quite a while. Keep up the great work.
Saludos
Appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. I’m a self employed Master Plumber by trade and rarely need welding in my daily job but enjoy welding and light fabrication on weekends. Picked up some 8010 after watching your videos and have been practicing my downhill welds. Your videos are very helpful.
Hey “A” man, as always good stuff. I also do a lot of coped cuts, I actually made up a jig and I use a hole saw. No bigger than 2” copes, anything bigger than that gets a little hinky. Hood down lights on.
Love your content , keep making videos and teaching us much appreciated.
Great video! Definitely will show this to my students!
I tried making some of those dead man braces , they look ... okay; i found using a tube notch template helped a lot for coping the pipe . i will say i need to do more of these to make them all look the same . if anyone is curious i set the middle brace at 42" , am using 48" cattle wire fence , my angles where 64degrees with diagonal of 106" with a stubby 3' concrete in the ground . i set it at 42 because of deflection and that is a good height to help mitigate the deflection in the pipe. all i have left is just weld the 2-7/8 to 4.5" piece still . going to try my luck with 7018 up hill :X . Thanks for making this video it gave me the confidence enough to give it a go :D might have to pick up some 7010 or 8010 and see how down hill goes :3
Awesome video. You sure did build my confidence. I always eye balled my marks when I was cutting degrees. I thought there was a formula and layout but I have never seen it. Thanks for the video
Your videos are making me want to pipe weld
Always look forward to your videos
Thank you so much! Simple and simply what I was looking for. Good Job!!
Awesome video, once again thank you for sharing you knowledge i just learned how to cut that angle it take me forever to figure it out how to cut them
Throat inside Hill outside Good job buddy keep up the good work
As always an awsome video.
Something to try is what is called a "Rance brace" it is a design from New Zealand that alot of professional fence builders across the country are going to. Because it is less materials, safer for livestock, and stronger/longer lasting then other styles of braces.
Your "dead man" brace is pretty close. Exept you only use one diaginal at a 19 to 16° angle to a queen post that is driven subsurface or left slightly above the ground.
Also there are a couple other ways to measure for your diaginal.
First is have 2 clamps lay your pipe ontop of them or clamp them to the post where you want it to land and mark your top and bottom. The other is. Mark were you want the top of the pipe and measure to the top on the other post, then move your tap measure on one side to where the bottom of the pipe would be and subtract that measurement to get the other side of your cope.
I always pop a chalk line down the pipe before any cuts. To keep everything lined up👍
Thanks Austin , enjoyed the video and always enjoy your instructions. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.
I have more trouble with type braces ,thanks for the new to me idea gonna go try it right now
Just how I figured on doing this! Have you done any sloped cattle guard fenders? That'd be a good one.
I like using sucker rod for the deadman's (I call em transverse's) when in the tensioned position. Much easier. Two to three passes. Thanks Austin.
Go Bob Pipe and Steel excellent source for new rejection material
Good to have a curv-o-mark pipe marker once you mark quarters, transfer the angle from the angle finder to the curv o mark. It will mark the long and short points more accurately than an eyeball. Can use the pipe marker on the string line to get the angle.
Steep angles can create some funky saddles.
Austin, Thanks for all the helpful content - you are my inspiration for building my own pipe fence entrance to my property. I know you have to use a gas axe because you have a portable setup, but I can cut my pipe in my shop. Is there any reason to use my torch over my plasma cutter?
ARoss,I think experience is something to pass on,I could explain in person in a few minutes, draw vertical lines for post, maybe six, ground line, now with no toprail, how would you put in an angle brace? Corner post down to first post, but only 60% up the corner post, toprail or not.
That "fit up" will work, for sure! Weld it and move on!
Great video. However, what was the chain gate thing?
No soy pailero ni soldador, no soy herrero, pero si fui un muy buen buen ayudante de soldador, aprendi de mi padre.
Thanks Ross.
You bet. Thank you for watching.
Very Helpful….. thanks
Again good job. Be careful not to get a hole one down your boot.
Thank you sir!
Good demo on how to build a brace. The different pipe sizes really make for a pain in the *ss. Wouldn't hurt to use the string all the time...makes for more accurate bevel cuts.
BTW, the side pipes are "vertical" or "plumb", not "level". Level implies horizontal...
What was that fence off to the right ???lol. The original chain link !!!!????
nice work brother god bless ....
Thanks. And thank you for watching!
So, how much did ya charge for cutting and welding that bar in?
I have some 3 1/2 inch pipe 10 1/2 foot long I want to drive them in the ground should I go 6 feet or 5'
Have a question mr Ross can you put the top crossbar on top of an entry way if it’s been welded together in the middle or will it come apart after time ?
As long as the weld is good there should be no problem with putting the pipe on top.
Can you show something on that chain fence? I've never seen that.
Looks like truck dual tire chains.
Cool use for them!
Have you completely left pipeline work?
Awesome tips Austin! Is the deadman style brace stronger than running 2+ horizontal braces?
I am not for sure.
Hey Austin great video.!!?!?,! Just wondering what do they call the horizontal pipes between posts ???? I’ve always called them climb bars but I’m from the woods lol 😂😎
Hey Austin what knee pads do you use??
Thanks.
Where do you get your pipe stands from?
Красный шаблон сами сделали или продаются?
whats up with Andy is he still pipelining through covid?
What size rod do you use for that pipe
Do I need to put h braces for pipe fence 😊
How come you didn’t lean the brace the other way?
Is a Miller legend 301g for pipe line
How do you know which way that angle should lean.
This video was just an example. I will not be leaving this brace in there permanently.
Apesar del Idioma me basta con ver. Todo
Thank you. Less time with the string line. Cut the pipe and weld it. Move on to next eyeball😃
Como pudiera trabajar encontrará trabajo q soy soldador
👍🏻🇨🇱
Coping with coping . your work is copasetic .
