I am a hoarder and kept a whole cupboard of 'memory boxes', full of stuff even things like old wrapping paper etc. I found your videos during lockdown last year and they were so inspiring. I have been decluttering my whole house slowly but I couldn't face this cupboard of memories, from my entire 32 years. Then disaster struck and there was a leak and the cupboard was damaged. I lost a lot of precious items. It was heartbreaking but also a harsh wake up that I am not treasuring my memories by throwing everything in boxes. I was forced to actually declutter what was left and very quickly I had two black bags full of complete rubbish. Now I am only keeping things that are true treasures and I am going to treat them in a way that they are treasured.

I lost both my parents last year and had to clean out my childhood home. LOTS OF MEMORIES. I had to face the fact that the memory isn't in the stuff, it's in ME! It's helped me look at the items more logically than emotionally which has helped a lot.

I was a foster care provider for 20 years. I have a couple of points. 1. Move EVERYTHING out of your foster care bedroom. The child needs to feel like it's their room and they're not staying in a store room AND they won't leave your stuff alone. 2. Keep your overnight bag. The Foster child will need one and you can let it go easily with them. Not many foster kids come with stuff they need.

    • @janetcote3107
      @janetcote3107 3 роки тому +86

Another foster/adopt parent. Keep the overnight bag & spare backpacks. I kept bins of child clothes labeled by size so kids could “go shopping” in the bins and pick a few outfits they like. Stuffed animals or teddy bears to hug are also nice to have handy.
I liked how what you keep in the wardrobe can easily transfer out because food would be eaten/crumbs in the room, and less care to your items if left there.

When my mother was elderly and lived alone in a very small one bedroom apartment (which she loved keeping house in) I would ask her to make a list of groceries she needed for me to get for her. After each item she would put in parentheses (small). I would tell her that she would save money by buying the larger sizes and they would last longer, she would say that it was not saving money if she had to eventually throw them out when expired, dried out, moldy, rotten or rancid, or ended up not working like she thought they would. She also would say she didn’t have the space for large items or amounts in her little home. Smart Mama. I thought of her when you showed the large packages of camper supplies. Also I don’t know about others but I tend to be wasteful of food and supplies when I have lots of them. I’ve learned a lot from her and YOU! Thank you Dawn. Donna, Mike’s wife.

Like Dawn, I keep some overflow pantry items in the basement too. If I have extra of something (cereal, canned goods, Gatorade, etc.) I take a small piece of masking tape and write “More Downstairs” and attach it to the item that is upstairs so I don’t forget I already have some. I even do this with items that have to be refrigerated after opening, like salad dressing. It has saved many unnecessary purchases and has been a game changer for me.

I have had a few doctors tell me I suffer from depression and I thought they were nuts. But then a channel I was watching on decluttering said something about how our environment reflects our mood and mental health. 🤔 I was like woah. The clutter has taken over my home and I'm sick of it. I'm frustrated by it. At times I have thought how I wouldn't be mad if the house burned down... terrible, I know. 🤷‍♀️ Clutter is making me feel frustrated and anxious and like what is the point because even when I spend days cleaning my house, it never looks/feels clean due to all the junk!! So I'm taking the plunge... I already did 2 hallway closets and the medicine cabinet in the master bathroom. I plan to spend 2 or more hours DAILY until I have worked my way through every single room in my house. I'm doing the best I can do. Maybe I *REALLY WAS* depressed... but I sure don't feel that way and so *I AM READY TO MAKE A CHANGE.* Good luck to you Mozel! Nothing inspires me like a visit to my sister’s house! It’s not that it isn’t clean, it’s her kitchen and bathroom counters being so full of stuff! I just got back yesterday from a 3 day visit with her, and although my husband keeps things clean (actually cleaner than me!) while I’m away, the first thing I did when I got home was unpack and make sure everything was put back where it belongs. Then I made sure my kitchen was clean and counters cleared before going to bed.

MY favourite thing for decluttering is staying in one room until it is finished. If you need to leave to feed family etc. Close the door and then make that your come back to point. Also make a spot in the corner of the room for trash donation and move stuff. I find if I leave the room then I get distracted with other things and do not get done what I wanted too. But I love your videos. They have inspired me to declutter my sewing and my pantry and my storage garage.

There are so many decisions to be made, but as you’ve said before, we build the decluttering muscle the more we do it. Having a friend around for moral support can be a big help.

I just want to thank you for continuing to make your videos. I’ve been going through a difficult season, and my house has really gotten put on the back burner, and is now just adding even more stress to this hard time. It had been a while since I’d watched one of your videos, but this one just popped in my recommendations, and I’m glad I watched it. Sometimes, it’s helpful just to see things from a different perspective. It will probably take a while, but this definitely helped me feel a little more motivated to tackle the clutter in my house.

While listening to you, I was was motivated to go back to the Guest Bathroom Closet; a 2nd layer of cleaning!! 1-full garbage bag-and a definite sense of accomplishment on a Saturday morning!! Thanks, Dawn!😊❤

Great video, Dawn! You have taught me so many great concepts when it comes to decluttering! My husband and I refer back to them all the time. I think my favorite is "do I want to manage this?" and "would I buy this again?" Thanks for all you do! :)

I love how uncluttered your space is - amazing!
It would be so easy to fill that white wardrobe and basement with stuff.
You are so smart to not just keep things because there is space available to put them in.
It must feel peaceful to live in your beautiful, "simple" home, which takes dedication and smarts to simplify and keep it that way. Your home is wonderful inspiration for me.

My decluttering block is actually having access to the space that needs decluttering. Our office space is being used for remote work and our garage is only tolerable for the early hours. Using Dana’s methods has been great because I can make the space better while only having limited time. It also leaves the space functional when I have to leave it.

Fantastic tips! Thank you! I do something similar during the day. I alternate 30 minute time slots throughout the day with chores (cleaning, decluttering, etc.) and “me” time (reading, electronics, crafting, etc.). This ensures that I’m getting my fill of both without feeling overwhelmed or resentful.

I like that alternating idea. Going to incorporate that into my new vision of planning my entire day to stop wasting time.

Thank you Dawn for this much needed motivation today and the refreshers on decluttering questions! The struggle I have been having is that we are doing projects in our new house so it feels like every time I tidy or clean up more mess or clutter finds its way around the house because we are constantly working on different things. It can especially be hard when things are easily dropped in random rooms or the basement in order to make room to do projects. But I keep reminding myself that the end goal of decorating is near and that simple decluttering throughout the times we tidy up will help in the long run when putting the rooms back together! 🥰

Your pronunciation of the word "bag" warms my Midwestern heart. Good stuff, very accessible and down-to-earth.

Excellent video! Thanks for sharing this process. I always predict that decluttering a troubling spot will take forever to do, and it is often a much quicker task with a very positive outcome. It is certainly worth the effort. Many thanks!
