D22 Navara Solid Axle Swap Ep 6

- Опубліковано 27 чер 2022
- This Ep we finally get into working with our coilovers and assemble our coilover towers.
In order to get the most out of this build, we need to position the coilover towers in the best position. We want to have the most up travel we can get, without bottoming out the shocks and without caving in our oil sump or chassis.
To do this we put the engine back in so that we can see our clearances and work around what is going to contact. All and all there isn't too much stopping us from getting the diff all the way up to the chassis rails, which means we will be able to use the full length of the shocks without losing up travel. We will sort out the pesky oil sump next episode and aim to weld our towers into the chassis. See you then!

Need to finish this off man. Been checking for a year now.
I need less cars 🙃 poor D22 has been sitting for a long time
Shocks look very sexy mate. A lot more clearance there than I thought there would be. Be thankful for a compact engine!
I was very surprised to see how much room there was when I got the engine in. The ZD is full of surprises 😂
just binged watched all the eps , spewin there’s not another one yet!
keep up the good work mate! keen to see the finished product
Thanks mate that’s awesome to hear 🤙🏻 next ep might be a while as I have a few issues I need to sort out with the build👍🏻
Great work champ! I'm not an expert but just keep in mind your body will move on the mounts while driving, so you might need a touch more clearance around your shock tower.
You’re bang on mate, I’m going to leave a larger gap but close it up with some rubber trim when I’m finished 👍🏻
been watching since episode one and can say i am so keen to do this to mine after watching your videos keen as for the new episodes
Thanks mate hopefully you can use these videos to get through building yours 👍🏻
You have done an amazing job so far bud can not wait to see the finished product keep up the good work
Thanks mate, got a couple things I need to sort out before next ep so it might be a while but it’s coming along slowly 👍🏻
Have you completed the conversion mate can’t find next episode?
When you modify the sump, just make sure you have the same volume as standard.
Ill try and aim for just a little bit over standard as it cant hurt having a little more capacity. I also thought about using an external oil cooler to add capacity but I think it'd be overkill as the factory cooler works well.
Loving watching ur videos man just bought a d22 Nav and I’m keen to go down the same road man would love to see the next video
That’s awesome mate they’re an absolute cracker of a car, you’ll love it. I’m keen to get back to working on the nav but I’ve got a lot left to do to the patrol 😂
Awesome. Loving it mate. I’m doing king coilovers in front end of my GU patrol at moment. I’m loving some ideas here. You’re doing most things the way I planned. Except I’m doing chassis seperate to car. I bought the rampt customs coilover towers.
You have inspired me to consider going flipped 80 arms in front. I love those brackets for diff and being able to set good castor for low ride height.
Can’t wait for next episode.
That sounds like a weapon, what size coilovers did you go for? And I think flipped arms are definitely worth it if you’re considering it, the patrols mushroom bush is a poor design and cruiser arms are definitely worth it 🤙🏻
@@ReubsModifications I already have the superior arms that use cruiser bush with drop box and some extra length.
Using a 2.5x10inch travel set of king coilovers. Don’t want stuff sticking out bonnet etc. race car spec without race car attention.
Sounds like you’ve got it all sorted sounds mount 👌🏻
Good job bro keep it up keen for the next ep
Thanks dinky, good to see you again 🤙🏻
@@ReubsModifications u too bud hope life is well
@@dinkybacon_9686 thanks mate you too 🤙🏻
Great work mate, keep at it.
Thanks mate 🤙🏻
@@ReubsModifications I remember seeing one of these navaras years back at a swap meat stockish height ,white sunrasia rims and a tub with canopy very old man stock look, when I asked why he has patrol hubs up front he said look a little deeper and it had a solid front diff swap up front which i thought was cool as until watching this build.
@@79series there’s one very similar to what you described that was built by crawl customs who made this kit. It was a patrol chassis swap with a d22 body 👍🏻
@@ReubsModifications not sure it had a leaf rear end.
When's the next episode coming? Been waiting for a year to see the project getting finished.
Hey mate been really busy with the patrol and renovating but I’m hoping to get back on the nav later this year 👍🏻
Loving ya work mate can’t wait for the next ep! Any news on when these kits will be available?
Thanks mate, I don’t have an ETA on when these will be released. I’d follow crawl customs on Facebook and he’ll make a post when these are available 👍🏻
Looking good! I'm going to be swapping Y61 axles into my jackaroo soon and these videos are fantastic!
I gotta ask about the shocks, at full extension, whats the clearance around the shaft on the lower shock mount? Don't want it binding up and snapping the bottom joint of the shock off the shaft, they're quite brittle!
That sounds awesome 🤙🏻 I haven’t quite got there yet, it depends on the angle of the coil towers and once they are in place tweak the lower mounts so they don’t contact throughout the travel👍🏻
Great video mate keen to see the finished product.. unrelated but have you upgraded your turbo? Also have you or do you plan on getting a remap done... I just bought a zd30 and trying to figure out what I should get done first and best ways to keep my egts low
That's the plan mate, the turbo is from a ZD30 patrol and is a VGT rather than a wastegated turbo. I'm probably going to have another look at turbos before I get a remap and probably bigger injectors too.
Easy way to keep EGTs down is a bigger exhaust and an intercooler. If you need to get the EGTs down further after those then you can up the boost without touching the fuel and this will lean out the fuel ratio to bring EGTs down further.
@@ReubsModifications I've heard someone say to get a TB48? I don't know much about them what's your thoughts.. I am planning to get the exhaust done and a remap at the same time. Then maybe upgrade the intercooler not sure on what brand/type of intercooler to get. I'm not really mechanically minded so really just winging it an getting tips/advice
@@davidl9687 If you’re going to get it remapped it’s a good idea to do all your mods first then get the remap if it’s a custom map. That way it will be made to suit all your modifications. As for which brand, it depends on if you want a winch or not. If you want a winch you will have to get a top mount intercooler or a small front mount. If you don’t want a winch then you can get a much larger front mount intercooler which are great. I had a HPD series 2 front mount and I’m pretty sure they are the biggest you can buy for the d22s 👍🏻
hey mate when are you gonna post some more videos on this
Hey mate, I've got too many other projects I'm working on and haven't had time for the D22. I will come back to it eventually though but cant say when.
Yeah Reubs
🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
When’s the next episode bro and where can I buy the bracket kit
Hey mate next ep wont be out for a while, if you're chasing the bracket kit get in contact with Crawl Customs now known as Warrego Metal Works 👍
Hey mate, how are you going about the engineering side? I'm looking at doing the PSR coilover kit on mine, but I'll need to sort out a blue plate
Best way to do it is to get in contact with the engineer first and see what they need done in order to mod plate it 👍🏻
wheres the next video?
@@ritchiewalker6194 I couldn’t say, been so busy the past year I haven’t had a chance to touch this car. I will be coming back to it eventually but can’t say when👍🏻
Hey brother awesome stuff keen to see the end product I just purchased my second 22 and am keen to do this to it! What do you do as a job if you don’t mind me asking
That’s wicked mate they’re a great platform to build on. I’ve been working in a heavy diesel workshop for a few years but have just started an apprenticeship in truck and motor body building and am onto my second year now 👍🏻
@@ReubsModifications they hiring? Haha
We cant take on any more apprentices but we do have room for some extra hands 👍🏻
@@ReubsModifications send the company through mate keen to apply haha

Man, where's the end result of this solid axle swap?
Hey mate have a few projects going at the moment so the next episode is going to be delayed a while
Where is ep. 7,8,9, to finish?
Ive been spending too much time on my partol but ill gat back to the navara eventually
where i can buy that bracket kit to do axle sas? thanks
Don’t think it is in production just yet
what do you use to film these vids
I started recording with my phone then went to a GoPro 8 and now I’m using a canon M50 👍🏻
Is the next episode out?
Not yet I've had a few projects get in the way
Where did you source the coilover towers?
Hey mate the coilover towers are from Crawl Customs, he designed this whole SAS kit for the D22s.
@@ReubsModifications Cheers man, didn't realise it was a kit. Goodluck with it, you really can't beat Radflo!
@@totobyafrica847 thanks mate, they were an easy choice because of their price point 🤙🏻
Next part 7.
Might be a while before part 7 comes out got a couple parts I need to source🤙
are you still building this
Not currently but I will come back to it eventually
Amazing. You have extraordinary technical skills and courage to execute such a project. I don't know where you got the technical information from, but I'm wondering how you reversed the left front transmission, how is the differential positioned on the D22, to the right, how is it positioned on the Patrol. I understood that you used the gearbox and gear diff for this. Did it require special modifications? I saw somewhere a front axle of the Patrol mounted with the differential on the left on a Jeep Cherokee and the owner says that he turned the crown in the differential, putting it in opposition. I don't know if it's possible, and I'm not referring to the pot, which can be cut and welded rotated by 180 degrees, but to the effective fixing and making contact between the pinion and the crown. If the bearings of the differential were placed symmetrically and the pinion also had axial symmetry, it would probably be possible. I haven't opened the Patrol front axle and I can't say if it's possible. Anyway, you did an impressive job, especially since you worked alone.
Thanks mate, in the d22s the diff has drive coming from the passenger side or the left side of the gearbox to the diff. Whereas patrols are the opposite and have drive coming from the transfer case on the right side of the gearbox.
As far as I know all the bearings are symmetrical in these diffs however the diff centre is offset to the right side so flipping the centre wouldn't do much. What some people have done is cut the ball ends off the diff rather than cut the centre pumpkin out. Flipping the diff and re welding the ball ends on allows you to have the same axles but the drive now comes in the left side.
Hope this answers your question 👍
Hows the SAS build coming along
Haven't got anything done on it lately as if been focusing on the patrol. Just finished the patrol so should be able to get back to the nav now 👍
@@ReubsModifications oo okay cool mate looking forwaed to the video
@@TheEdwin071 me too I’ve been walking around it for too long, time to get back on it 😂
is there another episode.? what happened to the swap.?
Hey mate, I haven't given up on the project but its been pushed back as I'm building another 4x4. I will come back to it eventually.
@@ReubsModifications oh dam, i have a similar d22 and a few years ago i wondered how the converstion might go, issues youd face etc. been a good watch so far.! cheers for documenting it. when do you think youll get back on the horse.?
Hopefully next year sometime, although I said that last year 😂
@@ReubsModifications hopefully so.! does look like a troublesome situation though. keen to see how you triumph it 😁

Everything comes in a box now do it from scratch
Rear end will be done from scratch using a GU patrol diff and 4 link
Done yet?
Sadly I haven't touched the D22 project in about a year, very keen to get back into it just have too many other projects in the way.
