Have been watching your videos since I was just a kid into planes, surreal to be watching you for my CFI checkride prep. Thanks for years of service Jon!
WOW thanks for your support and great to hear that you are following your dreams of becoming a pilot!
I'm currently a truck driver/aspiring student pilot. Hoping to start my actual flight training this October. Fulfilling a lifelong dream at 49 years of age. I've quickly realized from my past job experiences I do really enjoy imparting knowledge and seeing others grow. I now realize that an excellent way to fulfill that enjoyment and earn money to support the habit of my lifelong dream of flying, would be to become a CFI. I'm glad I found your channel and the information you bring does help to connect dots and solidify the things that I'm going over through the aeronautical handbook. Many other great resources as well.
I know I do have a couple hurdles right out of the gate to jump as far as getting my medical cert. Sounds like I'll be needing a special issuance and that sounds like that could take quite some time to clear.
Got to love government pace.
I also know that I won't be teaching anyone until I'm confidently competent.
I have no idea just yet how long this journey will take me, but I know one thing for sure, you never know how far the ball will go until you kick it!
Thanks You for this awesome informative and inspiring channel.
Glad to hear you are enjoying it, good luck on your journey.
It's not too late! I'm 55, and it will be about my 4th career (two military). MOSAIC rules may change all your medical issues and wipe them all away. You would be able to get and use a CFI/II. Wouldn't be able to exercise commercial privileges though, but you could still charge as a CFI.
Thanks for doing this! Just got the "Have you called an examiner question?", so the ride is getting close!
Glad you found it helpful and good luck!
My CFI checkride got moved from 30may to 5jun, and so I had to in the middle of checkride prep, go from pts to acs. Not a big difference, but big enough to have to put my binder in a different order
Good luck on your checkride!
Any idea how this will affect the multi engine instructor ride?
Love ,to book there for week, more info
Get some training done too if available
We would love to have you, here is the link to our training. fly8ma.com/flight-training/
Just started CFI training
Checkride is on April 26
That's awesome congratulations and good luck!
I have to say, I love that PPL syllabus! That's great work and really well thought out. Do you have a comparable version in the works for IRA and CAX? The current IRA doesn't have that same evaluation system (bubbles) and proficiency stage designator (prop blades). Great idea!
Not yet.
Are we going to get a new CFI mock oral based off the ACS? Your original video was fantastic.
We will be putting together new oral videos soon. At this time we are making sure the CFI courses reflect the change over to the ACS.
Just passed my CFI checkride on the 7th of April. It's surreal to be on the last to use the PTS. No ill-will to those coming after me getting to use the ACS. Its sounds much more reasonable and should reduce the checkride cost significantly.
Congratulations on becoming a CFI!
Does this affect the CFII checkride? I ama currently studying for that, passed my CFI initial two weeks ago
^Same here, I would like to know this as well!
The changes do not apply to CFII and congratulations on becoming a CFI best of luck to you in your career as an aviator.
When will you be updating your course to the acs to purchase online?
It will be updated on the 10th of this month. You can purchase the course now and get started on the content, since not much has changed. learn.fly8ma.com/subscription-options/
My CFI checkride is May 28th. If we do the oral and then get weather canceled… do I then have to retake the oral because it will switch to ACS?
I would have that discussion with your DPE before the checkride. They would be able to tell you whether they will go off of the PTS or ACS for the flight portion.
I notice your site still has the understanding the PTS course for CFI, when do you expect to have that updated?
We are currently working on getting it updated.
@@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 Thanks! Looking forward to it.
Hey, regarding slow flight.. didn't you miss the fact that they added a completely new slow flight maneuver to the CFI ACS? Under Task X.B, one of the skills is to maintain an airspeed at which any increase in AoA would result in an IMMEDIATE stall (so flying at minimum controllable airspeed basically)... Skill AI.X.B.S4c
I actually cover the standards at which slow flight is being defined in the ACS at 7:09 in the video. The skill you are referring to is just the task of flying the maneuver in the clean configuration.
The old girl looks great. Never thought that I would see an aircraft that I loaded many times turned into living quarters. Not a pilot but I follow a lot of aircraft related channels. Take care and stay safe. Where’s the hot tub for the wing of 888DG?😊
The hot tub is in the works.
Hey , as a student pilot with over 100 hours logged, I’ve encountered some roadblocks in my training. Despite being soloed, I’m still struggling with maneuvers, particularly crosswind landings. My new instructor, who’s of ATP quality, has a different teaching approach, which has been challenging for me. He even suggested that maybe aviation isn’t for everyone. I’m feeling discouraged and considering quitting. Do you have any advice or encouragement for me? I’d greatly appreciate any ideas or insights you might have!
Firstly, the fact that you have soloed is proof enough that you are capable of being a pilot to some degree. All of us start with solos, then comes instrument cross countries, then come the lazy eights and chandelles. It’s just one challenge after another. The key is to find a way that helps you learn to overcome these roadblocks and keep moving forward. For example, I was having trouble remembering certain acronyms because the order of them didn’t make sense to me. So, I came up with a new acronym to help me. Certain maneuvers can be difficult to master. Remember, you are a student pilot, you are still learning. There is nothing wrong with that. My suggestion, is possibly look into finding another instructor that may encourage you more/ fit your learning style a little better. If you think that’s what is holding you back.
Thank you for your assistance! The instructor is undeniably skilled, yet his standards are remarkably high. His background as the top performer at the ATP school speaks volumes. Witnessing his ability to land a plane in a 25-knot crosswind is truly impressive, reminiscent of a mosquito delicately landing on a birthday cake. However, his idealism may pose challenges, complicating my responsibilities. Alternatively, perhaps my perception is skewed. I find myself in a state of confusion.
As a student pilot your personal minimums will obviously not be the same as someone who has been flying for a while. It takes time and practice to be able to land in a 25knt crosswind. Don't get discouraged. Just because the instructor is skilled does not mean he is the right instructor for you.
God bless you! I feel happier!
A lot of instructors over complicate cross-wind landings!
1. Wing down into the wind just enough to stop the drift
2. Use your pedals as needed (smooth pressures! Not movements) to keep the nose pointing straight down the RWY.
is the airplane house finished ???
The DC-6 is complete, our DC-9 should be done by the start of summer.
Why in singe engine airplanes (in multi engine too) don't use stopwatch for achieve V1 start at release breaks, to ensure expected airplane performance?
In single engine V1 & time: would be set as Vr - 5kts or less if runway is short, then V1 would be point for safely reject takeoff. (example, someone become sick during take-off)
there were accidents because engine did not had proper performance. and pilot realized that too late for reject takeoff.
And also in muli engine was accident because pilots set wrong takeoff power and runway ended before Vr. preflight calculations was ok.
I assume calculation will be complex, but with smartphones and tablets, simple app with profile for your airplane would do everything. Just put current conditions like temperature, pressure, dewpoint, runway length&slope, weight&balance, runway surface, and program would calculate V1 Vr, time, distance for takeoff, accelerate stop, etc.
I actually cover that in this video. ua-cam.com/video/wYRN-sWK8qc/v-deo.htmlsi=qJfVcD-T0_zSaxdt
Ugh please not yet. I've spent so much time training under the CFI PTS...
You still have until May 31st before changes go into effect.
You should get a grace period! This is one of the reasons I stopped at commercial although I'd like to get my CFI. I decided that check rides and preparing, and weather, and the DPE can't schedule until 3 months from now, and then the plane is in annual on the only day the DPE has available. I decided for something that I'm doing for the love and fun, is so miserable I don't want to anymore.
Now that the PTS/ACS are regulatory, the applicant and examiner have no discretion whatsoever. Henceforth, it will take a petition for exemption to get around what's in the PTS/ACS. This will have unintended consequences.
The ACS has been in use since 2016 and has shown to sufficiently gauge students pilots knowledge and skills. The PTS left much subjectivity up to the different examiners for each assessment area. Vague statements on how a pilot would exhibit sufficient knowledge of test elements have now been clearly defined with specific points within the ACS.
Hello, sir. I'd like to take your advice. I have two options where to go: Pilot and engineer. But I won't be flying in the US, so a 120k+ salary is out of the question. After analyzing the data, I realized that working as a FO I will get a little more than the average salary, if not less. But a pilot spends 100k on training, 1500 hours of flight time, carries 200 lives, can lose his job due to health at any time, and spoils it throughout the job. What do you recommend?🙏🙏🙏
Aviation is as a career has to be something you are truly passionate about. There is a lot involved to become a commercial pilot so just make sure it is something you really want to do before wasting money on something you may not enjoy. I suggest doing a discovery flight before you are financially committed.
