Oh thank you for this interview! Love hearing about the making of Xanadu. Your cousin did an amazing job teaching beautiful Olivia, she was a natural I wasn’t aware she didn’t know how to skate she looked so graceful. Beautiful choreography! The 40s/80s Dancin choreo was my favorite part of the movie. Jerry Trent and Kenny Ortega BRAVO and thank you for being one of the reasons I love this movie. The camera work didn’t do the choreo justice sometimes. I still wish I could time travel and dance with the dancers in this movie 😍🤍

I love this movie - will love it forever. It was everything to me when I saw it in the theater back in 1980 - I was 11. I was a rollerskating fanatic. This was so interesting.
I have so many fond memories of going roller skating at Roller Disco in my hometown! To this day, when I hear certain songs, my mind immediately goes back to that time.
Same here! Though....I was 7. Still going strong...at the rink, local trails, tennis courts, and just "recently" (like, 4 years ago) added park skating to the mix. I still would love to get my hands on a mock-up of her skates from that movie, though lacing/unlacing would be a pain, even with a zipper....
Xanadu was visually and technically spectacular at the time, a Technicolor dream, and so was Olivia! It depicted and really highlighted more of the fantasy, magical quality that Olivia carried… She’s the only person who was actually “muse like” in reality! It marked me more than Grease and I enjoyed it even more despite the weak script and dialogue. I saw it at least 4 or 5 different times in the theatre. As a roller-skating kid, dreaming of California and Olivia, I couldn’t get enough of it!

I don't think his comment about the movie being more about him was meant to be positive. The scene with Olivia in a WWII uniform is a time waster and just put in so Gene could dance
@@Marcel_Audubon Actually, it was a dream sequence that alluded to the fact that the Muse had also visited Danny McGuire in 1945, but the writers didn’t do a good job of piecing it in… Gene originally didn’t want to dance at all in the movie, but ended up doing so anyway and choreographing this whole scene himself with Ortega… and luckily dancing with Olivia, giving her and us a magical memory. Ortega also had a magical opportunity in Gene’s “mentorship” showing him his technique for braking down and shooting dance sequences. Gene’s signature dynamic dance moves graced this movie.
@B.Yung: Yep, it was Gene and Olivia’s presence that carried it. And he made a better match for her energetically. Kelly had a bigger, stronger presence and more charisma than Beck naturally… I never saw Beck as cast well for this role or for Olivia, very bland and lacking charisma. Thanks for uploading this interview and the video footage to go with it. My family finally migrated to Australia in 1979 from Argentina after 3 years of interviews and overcoming lots of obstacles. Back in those days there was no internet and going to a local library to find a book about Australia was the best one could aim to have in order to learn more about it. One Saturday morning a TV show played a song/video featuring Olivia Newton John from Australia! I sat infront of that black and white tv set open mouth and totally mesmerised by her voice and looks (I was only 15 years old!) and to be honest it gave me the motivation I needed at that time to keep learning about Australia. It is 2021 and I still live and love Australia as if I had been born here but I can not separate Olivia Newton John from my experience as a immigrant (she was actually also a migrant to Australia). What a remarkable interview as it covered most of what I wanted to know as a huge fan of the movie. Needless to say, I think it aged wonderfully due to the incredible soundtrack, the colorful sets, choreography, and the gorgeous Olivia. It remains one of my favorite films to watch again and again and again. Even more than Grease. Your cousin was quite handsome himself!

I have never seen the film. I love Olivia Newton John 💝 I wonder if it will have a re-surge in Olivia’s passing. She has inspired me to get skating again ✨🌈✨
I was in Olivia Newton-John fan for 50 years. I seen Xanadu 309 times at the theaters. Yes you read that right 😉. I was 20 years old at the time and had inherited some money from my parents passing several years earlier. Therefore I had the freedom to do what I wanted at that point in my life. I eventually had to get a real job 😃. Since the movie was not a massive hit I would go to the theater at the first showing of the day, and just stay there all day long and watch the movie over and over and over again. And then go back and do it again the next day. I did not go every single day though. I literally at that point in time knew every single line of every single character in the movie, every single word. I can look back and laugh at myself now and think wow I really did not have a life at that point 🤣. With that being said I wouldn't change a thing. I also met Olivia at her small Malibu ranch in May of 1980. It was about a 12 to 14 ft iron fence between her and I and believe it or not it was actually two police officers that told me where she lived. Again that was 42 years ago and you certainly wouldn't be able to do that now. That being said I got to speak with Olivia for about 15 to 20 minutes. She was so kind and sweet to me and even signed three album covers and I also took a selfie with her with my camera. Of course we didn't call it selfies back then 😃. She treated me like her equal, and if I wouldn't have known who she was I would have never known she was a superstar because she never presented herself that way. Stephan, you words beautifully depicted the same feelings that I have had for Xanadu for all these years. Back then I had a friend - we were 12/13 years old at the time. He gave her a letter that he had written especially to her Unfortunately he died in 2004, but our friendship never dimmed or cease to exist because love never dies - When I went to Olivia's concert in 2005, there was an empty seat next to mine. I made believe that my friend was there, enjoying the show, and I could actually sense his presence. Xanadu is a wonderful movie that brings back the innocence that once made part of two boys' life. I believe there is a land of the living and a land of the dead - the bridge is love, the only meaning, the only survival. Olivia, you are now in Xanadu... I am definitely sure that my friend has been with you. May God bless you. Rest In Peace.

Michael Beck. I once went to a double feature at the drive in and it was funny to see Michael Beck prancing around in the first film and beating the living shit of out gang bangers in the second.
I don't like it when I hear it wasn't a good movie! It was a good movie, it was different, it was a lot of fun, loved the music. I also fell in love with Olivia!
Gene was the best partner for a newbie. Calm and intuitive. There are not many ppl with that skill. Saying that, the basic training was very helpful. I speedskated on Cali style roller skates and I've done many duets. To get there it took lots of pain.
@@phillipleconte3715 No. I was semi pro on roller skates. We can spot perfectionism. I do remember him in old movies. It's all about adding constant practicing on top of natural ability.
Want to see the referenced movie with Gene Kelly ruling on roller skates, turning steel wheels into wings? That would be MGM's 1955 musical, "It's Always Fair Weather," a legendarily underrated, unrecognized, but unparalleled classic.
I am clumsy. I've always been clumsy. As a kid, my Dad taught me how to not get hurt when I fall. He told me to do as the stunt guys do in the movies, don't try to stop myself from falling, but instead to just lean into the fall and roll with it. I've never broken a bone. Hopefully I never will. I was a fan of this movie when it first came out. My cousin wanted to see it because of Olivia, but his friends teased him about it, so he didn't go. He asked me if it was a bad movie, like everyone was telling him, and I told him that I loved the movie. Sure, it could have been a better movie, but it also could have been a worse movie, and it was good enough to enjoy watching.
Thank you @JerryTrent for the standard of safety and care you gave Olivia while skating. Unfortunately, they failed to follow it on set without you and, although no one makes the connection, I always felt that the fall and fracture of her coccyx here is ironically connected to where the cancer cells ultimately spread to… I feel it weakened that area physically and energetically. Had you been with her that day, maybe it would be different. Maybe. 🙏❤️
Grease was always exciting to watch but Xanadu could've been so much better if edited in a different way. It just didn't flow well. Everything else was awesome.
Exactly… and Thanks to Jerry, again for his care, but not to low safety standards by others on set - could have been avoided. May have been a connection to the weakened sacral area decades later.
I've never, ever liked 'Grease'. Grease is very, very 50s- probably more 50s than the 1950s really were. 'XANADU''s music is better, the storyline is although actually lighter, but, still pretty original. Most people go to the movies to see action, violence and nobody admits to wanting to see sexy / moments of sex.
@@vincentsolomitajr4029 Jerry lives in a beautiful home in LA. His son lives across the street. His wife, who danced for Jerome Robbins in the first touring company of West SS, passed away recently. So he's heartbroken but grateful for their years together.

Gene Kelly was an awful injection into the movie. It was young and fresh one minute, then all of a sudden it feels like some over-the-hill mafia-looking dude cones and snatches the whole thing out of the jaws of victory. That whole scene is garbage, really. A complete diversion from the tone of the rest of the film. It needed to stick to the outdoors for one thing. For another, the whole roller rink thing felt like a "musical numbah!" Ugh.

@@michaellefort6128 I’m sure it must feel like ten years ago crazy how time fly’s!
Gene was the best partner for a newbie. Calm and intuitive. There are not many ppl with that skill.
Saying that, the basic training was
very helpful. I speedskated on Cali style roller skates and I've done many duets. To get there it took lots of pain.
Curious. Did you work with Gene?
@@phillipleconte3715 No. I was semi pro on roller skates. We can spot perfectionism. I do remember him in old movies.
It's all about adding constant practicing on top of natural ability.
I think about Xanadu, Oliva and Gene just about every time I skate at the rink
lol so great, I was wondering when he was going to get to the part about her breaking her tailbone lol
Want to see the referenced movie with Gene Kelly ruling on roller skates, turning steel wheels into wings? That would be MGM's 1955 musical, "It's Always Fair Weather," a legendarily underrated, unrecognized, but unparalleled classic.
gush much?
You’re right, Jerry, it’s not a very good movie.
It’s an AMAZING movie!
Can we talk about how handsome Jerry Trent is? Thanks.
which of the 3 magazines do you think sold the most the magazine with the Queen on the cover, the most recent or the one with Olivia on it?
Just picked up the issue of her on it did anybody else pick up Us or People or her on the cover?
@SharrelWright Her own issue is like 14.00 I think, the issue of Star stinks
I picked up People .
Maybe. 🙏❤️
❤
Any movie she played in was bad ass don't know what this so called experts are thinking apparently they don't know a dam thing about movies
2:53 - Screw you, buddy! Hehe
Later Olivia ❤️
As a series of musical numbers its fantastic. The bits in between are cringe inducing. But overall because its a true musical, there’s a lot to enjoy.
Grease was always exciting to watch but Xanadu could've been so much better if edited in a different way. It just didn't flow well. Everything else was awesome.
OMG! Poor Olivia..she hurt her tushie.
Exactly… and Thanks to Jerry, again for his care, but not to low safety standards by others on set - could have been avoided. May have been a connection to the weakened sacral area decades later.
Why couldn't they have gotten Travolta, at least he and Olivia had chemistry together!
he didn't have that 70's feathered hair.
Rickey Henderson rookie did!
Why does this video's dialogue sound like a phone call?
because jerry lives in Studio City and I live in Austin. I had to call him.
@@phillipleconte3715 What does Jerry do today?
@@vincentsolomitajr4029 Jerry lives in a beautiful home in LA. His son lives across the street. His wife, who danced for Jerome Robbins in the first touring company of West SS, passed away recently. So he's heartbroken but grateful for their years together.
@@phillipleconte3715 Sorry to hear that good that his son lives next him! Thanks for the reply!!
@@phillipleconte3715 Thank him for taking care of Liv properly, I never knew the truth behind the fall… he should’ve been assigned to her 24/7 on skates. Love and light and condolences to him from the Oaks 91403 ❤️✌🏻
The place where nobody dares to go…….
The critics didn't like it because there was no violence or sex scenes. Wholesome movies don't sell. $$$$ 😥
"Nothing from 1980 aged perfectly..."
Sorry, I disagree. Olivia aged perfectly.
She really did.
Hey!......Yeah, with heavy make up[ and strong lighting....lol.....
If only she had skated as she felt naturally, we’d have multitudes more of lesbians
Today people are using electric bicycles. Lazy People
This person, Jerry Trent? is full of self importance.
