- A couple of years ago I flew (and reviewed) Cathay Pacific's business class. I wasn't impressed. Whilst seats were great I was left cold by the service and disappointed by the meals. On a recent trip to Europe I decided to give them another go - this video shows how it went.
I must say, in my opinion, Cathay Pacific have really turned it around. Their crew were friendly, happy and engaging - they were eager to please and their service was top notch. The meals too were a vast improvement on Cathay's previous offerings.

Good to see that their food has improved. I flew them to New York from KL a few years ago and opted to get the wanton noodles instead of the main course on one of the legs because I wasn’t so keen on their offerings.

I was on a Cathay Pacific flight from Auckland NZ and stopped over in Hong Kong then flew to London 8 days later after landing in Hong Kong but I flew in economy whilst moving to the U.K

“Cloud juice” 😂 love it! That was a super early departure as it was still dark, I hate those early morning / red eye flights... I always choose day flights where possible, no need to set the alarm, great views outside and traditionally safer flights for the pilots flying.

Flew Cathay business class HK - SYD a couple of weeks ago in J over night and was really disappointed. Great seat but
No bedding and food was very bland.
The seat design was very comfortable and private.

Another great video, Dennis. What a lot of your international respondents may not necessarily realise is the fact that for Australians to get anywhere they face long hours in a plane. Short hops to say Singapore, KL or Manila are still a minimum of 8 hours, so to get to any European destination, we face a minimum of an additional 12 hours. So a focus by Australian aviation reviewers on business class travel makes sense if you consider a minimum of 20 hours in your clothes and as you rightly point out the genuine need for pajamas....after a meal midway and a shower! Looking forward to your next episodes.

Still, you could tell LARGE BUDGET CUT for business class, more shifts toward Economy class... BR,SQ, NH stands their lines, but not CX.

whether or not is this worth actually paying for the business?
among all the business flyers i know about 5% actually paid for business full price.
it's usually worth upgrading with miles, or if you have a business and can tax cut the flight.
for a 10+ hours flight (what u had) with Cathay, you would have to add around 1K usd for the upgrade from economy (around 1K) to business (2K)
or for the premium economy (1.6K full price) (depending on the season)
is the difference worth paying 1K usd?
for the average person no. definitely not. it's just an 11h flight. and paying 1K for 11h is crazy.
weather it is worth the money? i think the premium economy is roughly the same food.
and the same service level.
and u can bid like 100 or 200 usd or so for it which is totally worth it if you get it.
i would say the difference in the 100-200 usd to the premium economy? yea worth it.
the difference in the 1K usd full price not upgrading with the point ? nha. not for most of us who just go to travel.
Another great review Dennis! In general I'm not a fan of "in your face" flight reviews, but your professionalism, insightful commentary, and intriguing Aussie accent set the standard! Your style in fact inspired me to start doing my own UA-cam flight reviews on the other side of the world. Question for you or anyone in the comments: I have the option of 2 flights in Cathay J long haul or on JAL supposedly in their sky suite III. Which should I take?
Tip: When flying Cathay Pacific Business Class, avoid supper flights. These are the flights that depart in the late evening/midnight/dawn. They love to serve those grissini (bread sticks) with savory dips together with the main course and some mixed berries all on one tray.

Nonsense. You must be joking !! Just flew August 2018 on CX SYD/LHR then ROM/SYD in Business on 777. Clueless OR NO service. Drab cabin. Rock hard bed. Dreary food. No snacks at all between meals SYD/HKG. NEVER AGAIN.
Thank you for this review Dennis. It seems Cathay quality is really uneven from one flight to the other. We were disappointed with the crew in A350-900 business class in april for BRU-HKG and HKG-BRU. Food was also not great, just OK.
It's the same everywhere but great crew makes a big difference. Just flew with my wife and kids 747-400 BA First LHR-IAD and JFK-LHR last week, crew was much nicer on the second flight (forgot to tell them that) and believe me or not, I would fly BA First class again... but not business class, bad food, bad crew, bad product.
"Black Friday" supposedly started out has the bottom line not being in the redyour airline has an image of an older Black woman on it's vertical stabilizer. "Azzholes" !!!!!!!!! "Mutha F'ers"
Great clip as always Dennis. I personally was not impressed with CX. I flew from JFK - PER in January this year and will probably not fly them again. I think I will stick to QF. Yes I’m a Gold QF f/f.

Cathay reversed herringbone seating in Biz Class ? Excellent. Hard to beat. Service? So-so. SQ, QF Ek better. Even MH . Food? So-so . Cant compare with QF ,TG Thanks for the video.
My last CX was BKK to HKG in December. Purser dropped in for a chat. Never felt neglected. I'm OW Emerald so maybe that helped (it doesn't seem to make a difference on MH/BA).

Hi Dennis, not specific to this video reviewing Cathay, but I was wondering how often in your travels do you experience delays and cancelations? I don't see these issues discussed much by aviation bloggers for some reason. It would be interesting to hear about your experiences with delays caused by airlines like late arrival of equipment (aircraft) or maintenance issues as well as weather and ATC.
Great review, Dennis. I stumbled across your channel while ‘wishful thinking’ about Business Class travel! My wife and I had a short experience of it from Dubai to Bologna earlier in the year after a economy trip from Auckland to Dubai! I don’t think I can do economy for long haul ever again (and after all your great videos too)! Keep up the great work.

How would you rate those seats to other airlines? Other than the tray table, they look almost perfect, and that table could be fixed.
Hi John A few airlines have a variation of this type of seat now and I think that overall it is the best design out there at the moment (other than Qatar's Q-Suite).
Agreed on service - I flew Cathay a few years back and splurged on Premium Economy for my partner and I. We were given a hurried drink just prior to take off and then, for the rest of the flight from Perth to HK got made to feel like we were an intrusion. It also didn't sit too well that economy passengers were served their meals before us. I'm not a prima donna or anything but when you pay extra, you EXPECT extra. I vowed to never fly CP again.
I totally agreed with you , the cabin service from Cathay is the best even better than Singapore. Their staff provide more personal service comparing the non smiling Singapore especially their ground check in staff at Changi Terminal 3 (business counter on the afternoon of 31/12/18). In my opinion Cathay deserves a better ranking in Skytrax rating
Back in the 1970s I used to fly from Singapore to Hong Kong several times a year. At that time Cathay Pacific's Economy class was better than most airline's First class!

I do agree that the Cathay service is sometimes a bit off however I put this down to a cultural thing. Australians are very out there, while Asians are more reserved. It must be difficult for them to find the right mix as they have a mix of western and Asian customers on their flights.
Personally, I find the Qantas A330 business class seat more comfortable but the Cathay one isn't far behind.

I'm glad you enjoyed your flight onboard Cathay Pacific they are an underrated airline. However, with the rise of Hong Kong airlines as a prominent rival of theirs how do you think Cathay stacks up with respect to their rival?
Dennis, am thinking of flying Cathay Pacific to Copenhagen early next year. But this trip is a treat trip by going J class so still trying to work out the best airline to treat myself on. Have no interest in the Middle East, so prefer HKG or SIN, or even BKK. Let me know what you think would be the best way to make the most of a once in a lifetime trip....
I went to Europe with them in 2012 and once before, many years ago. I have always been happy with them. Shattering to leave so early that it means missing out on the bubbles! I would have made a point of asking for a glass with lunch! LOL! Thank you for the video!

Flew CX from CGK to HKG on business class yesterday. No amenities kit, toilet ran out of soap, service was rushed, my guest woke up midflight hungry to find out there were no food left, while the cabin staff were eating in the galley. Not very pleased with CX services, they need a lot of fixing to do.
I just flew CX a month ago in First on the 777-300ER and Business on the A350-900. Had a great time and was a great use of miles!
Are you still thinking of doing that around the world trip through Star Alliance? 15/16 hours on Air Canada between Melbourne and Vancouver might be interesting.
I like your videos because they are not too long - straight to the point. Well done! On Cathay, I'm happy they've improved but just read they suffered big loss last quarter!
I flew premium economy last may .cant afford business class. I found it disappointing, especially some of the staff. One girl in particular was really off and seemed to have it in for me after I asked her for help with my tray table. I hadn't been home to the uk in 16 years and she made that leg of the flight a bit horrid for me. Luckily the hong kong to Auckland leg was operated by air new Zealand and the difference in the staff and the general product couldn't have been more marked. I will avoid Cathay Pacific in future.
Wondering if you have flown CX Premium Economy lately and if the service/food is similar to business? Just got off two flights and was left cold by the service and the food... well let's I couldn't eat it.

Totally agree. After 15 years costant prem travel I gave up and many HK collleagues did the same for various reasons as better cheaper choices. They admit they do not like oneworld and give priority to low level Marco Polos. Rubbish airline and even their well paid expat tech crews complain all the time. That is well know in HK sine change to local management.

I often see crew CX stopping filming and was on Sam Chui,s flight where they allowed it because he is so well known..plenty of smiles till camera went off but other pax complained.
