On my last two flights, I flew back to back on the economy with CX from TPE-HKG-CGK. I always enjoy the hard product, somehow like just most people said here the crew is just so inconsistent. The TPE-HKG leg was always great (even if it's a short one), but always feel the HKG-CGK service is so bad (almost every time).
@@hox1788 Basically the massive decline in standard in flight ops. In the 90s, 2000s CX was a very desirable airline to work for and attracted the best from around the world. These days it's got a terrible reputation with pilots today expats that fly there that don't have any other option or a poor record elsewhere. In the years leading up to COVID management showed a huge disconnection from operations. Hence the collapse of Dragon and struggling to staff their operation. It's no longer treated as an airline by management and thus for the last few years there is no interest from experienced aviation professionals from pilots to people with experience in managing an airline. As a pilot myself CX was going to be my first choice but after talking to a lot of people at the top of Flight Ops (Check and Training Captains, Base Training Captains, Fleet Managers, HKCAD Licensing Authority pilots etc) I was talked out of it in about 2013/14. These guys were ex RAF Red Arrows, RAAF Roulettes, military instructors and management pilots. They all said the same thing then - CX flight standards are now driven by accountants and since I've been told pilots get no real say in safety. Very glad I listened to them.
I'm taking Cathay Pacific for my holiday to China and back (AMS-HKG-CAN and back). Curious to see the Economy class experience. I just hope the first flight leaves and arrives on time as I have a 1 hour and 50 minutes transfer. Thanks Dan for showing us around this video!
CX was so consistent pre-COVID. Its ground service at SIN (my hub) is still better than that of SQ I feel like but you can see onboard crews becoming unprofessional (or as some in the comment section rightfully pointed out, unable to be professional due to multiple constraints) and lapses emerge. I do hope CX can recover and heal better.
I have tried their business class on their a350-900, and I would say it was an amazing experience. Even when the airline is at the state of near bankruptcy. The staff are incredibly nice, and the entertainment selection was incredible. I would definitely want to fly it again.
Thanks for the video! We’re flying cathay from Australia to Canada via HK because it’s not flying through LAX (and anything is better than that!) and it was the best option for our oneworld around the world ticket. We are flying business and I’m glad we have a stopover in HK because the airport looks great. I don’t really care about service on board if the seat and everything is comfortable. Hopefully it all goes well. Thanks for videos I really enjoy them!
Cathay was the first airline i experienced which didn’t serve water during a 15 hour flight. It’s just shocking. I literally had to walk to the back of the plane and ask for water
I flew HKG-LHR a few days ago and experienced a similar thing. Only once did I see the crew come through with a snack and even then, it felt like an afterthought, they never came through with water or juice. I hope it's better on my return flight. I went to LHR last year on Malaysian, even their crew came through with water.
Have flown a few CX long haul economy in the past few months, in some flights the crew did not walk the cabin at all when lights were turned off, but in some flights they did, so I am not sure what's the standard procedure. Crew in Qatar (also flew with them in the last few months, so the same time period for comparison) walked the economy cabin every 1-2 hour with a tray full of snacks, water and juices. I always find the Qatar crew to be quite diligent.
@@lawyh1506 Not even in Business! They're facing crew shortages, however, most of the CX crew was still fantastic, especially the ISM on board - they are legends! Even before COVID, I can't recall the water walk being included in their service flow. (However a bottle of water is placed on the seat for passengers)
I will add that I used to be long-haul cabin crew so I have an understanding about cabin service. Regular walk-throughs were a must as it's also to do with safety.
Cathay Pacific will always be a sentimental favourite of mine, but it's too bad they've fallen behind their main competitors in so many areas, even before the Covid restrictions.
Thank you, Dan. It’s always a pleasure watching your videos, it is indeed a pure enjoyment. And I really appreciate your talents and efforts that you devoted in your work. Have a great and productive Thursday.
Well, Cathay is a complicated airline… but I still like it. Based on this video from Dan, I know what to expect from Cathay when I’m flying with them next: prepare to wait long for less than average meals, and don’t expect too much from the service.
Dan- I just wanted to say thank you so much for everything you do. Your videos are the best flight review videos in the world. Took my first international flight with Cathay in 2019. From jhb to Hong Kong than China. I was happy with everything from their service from their food which I still believe it the best thus far as I’ve been on qatar and emirate oh and Hong Kong airlines. They are the best on food thus far for me.
I have flown with Cathay Pacific and it has been an excellent airline. Having travelled in economy, premium economy, business and first class. All trips have been amazing. The service and quality is always good. Such a fan.
Thanks for another informative review. It would be great to see some reviews on Airlines/flights in and from Australia if you ever decide to travel to this part of the world.😊
Recently flown from LHR to HKG and back, the A350 product was looking good. Crew service in Business is good but its obvious staffing levels are a challenge to them!
Though I wouldn’t say the service on cathay is world class, the service you got on those flights definitely isn’t representative of Cathay’s actual service. I live in hongkong and fly them quite a bit I i’ll say that 4/5 flights would have service and meals significantly better than that. Anyways, Great Video! And although you mentioned you wouldn’t be seeking Cathay out, you should definitely consider flying them again, especially once they’d had some time to recover from the pandemic.

Hi Dan! How’s it going! I’m a cabin crew at CX and im new here. I hope you can see this. You mentioned our crew members are one step below. Here’s why. 9100hkd is our basic salary excluding layover allowance which is the equivalent of 1130 USD. After the pandemic, some of my colleagues get 13 turnaround flights for a month, meaning ZERO layover allowance is given. We’ve been trying our very best, I hope you enjoyed our service though.
It's been really rough for the crew and CX since HK had very tough pandemic restrictions over a long period of time, but keep up the nice work and the passengers all know the crew are all trying the very best.
@@brandrange2288 - Please show me where racism is in the comment above... Also, a point is being made that Cathay Pacific is paying the employees not enough to care about their jobs. That is an issue with employees worldwide due to the fact they are underpaid.

I'm so nervous for Cathay, I am from Hong Kong and I love Cathay cause its a part of Hong Kong's "Major Things" (IDK how to word it lol) and the HKG airport and Cathay are just some of the things I think are cool about Hong Kong.
A HK friend shared with me a very similar vision just like yours a decade ago. I can still remember her excitement and passion recommending this airline to me, just like a kid showing off her favourite toy. Unfortunately, I hate to say this, with my personal experience with the airline this company is in a rotten tomato state beyond any cure. I feel sorry for my friend, who was always so faithful in this company let alone the fact Cathay played a vital role in HK's modern history.
HKIA's T1 main concourse, opened in 1998, looks better than almost any airport or airport terminal built since. It's aged so well because it's more bare bones.
Just flew Cathay Pacific from Seoul to Hong Kong yesterday lmao. Perfect legroom, good meals but again lack of manpower…. Took them an hour after take off to serve the meal, and another 30mins of waiting after everyone finished their meals😅
I flew Cathay Pacific in business in March from Manchester to Hong Kong with work. The Pier Lounge in HK is amazing. The food and service on board really let them down. Food was very bland and limited choices on the flight back- no starter and only two dessert choices despite what was on the menus. The TV sound ended up out of sync too. Agree the seats were fantastic, loads of room.
My mum was upgraded from HKG > LHR a few years ago in the summer - she checked in quite late as was on a non-connecting flight but suspect it was also overbooked. She had no loyalty status. like literally zero :P
Finally, another Cathay Pacific video, and right on time because I'm going to Japan using Cathay Pacific, so I'm glad Dan gave us the current situation at Cathay Pacific
@@curious5887 Cathay is still a decent airline. It's miles better than the national airline of my country so I'd take Cathay Pacific anyday. Plus, lots of airlines are facing backlash at the moment, mainly because of all the budget cuts and whatnot they have to do since air travel is almost like or already is at pre-pandemic times.
I enjoyed a superb return flight from Seoul to London with Cathay Pacific earlier this year. It was an absolute steal and, 3 months on, I'm still wearing the in-flight slippers around the house 😛
Your bathroom problem is why I ALWAYS book an isle access seat regardless of class and/or seat plans. I think it's been nearly 40 years since I sat in a window seat that had a seat next to me. Gotta love the 1-2-1.
they recently updated the showers in the first class lounge after i got stuck in a 12 hour layover and now they have kohler anthem dtv shower systems and they are very luxurious
I just flew with them from Los Angeles to Bangkok Thailand, in business class, the food was subpar, and the flight attendants were nonexistent. But I enjoy the seat, all in all, it was still in enjoyable flight.
I was lucky that when HK finally 'reopened', I was able to get a Business ticket from Asia →Europe for the price that economy was being sold for by some airlines. Since then, Cathay's prices are shooting up and the Status Points given for the same journey in Premium Economy is *just* too small to push me into a Gold Upgrade. All sorts of frustrating...
I recently flew from Melbourne to London Heathrow via Hong Kong in economy (first time with Cathay), and I can say I definitely prefer it to Singapore airlines which I flew Brisbane to Heathrow a few months earlier. Obviously it's a subjective opinion but I found the food was better, the inflight entertainment was way better, and even the toilets on board and the staff seemed better as well. Plus the airport in HKG isn't too bad either (I still prefer Changi in Singapore but that's a hard one to beat) it has some really nice views of the surrounding hills. I'd definitely recommend Cathay to economy travellers on a medium budget.
Fantastic reviews and videos, we follow you "every step of the way"! Clearly obvious, but never stated, "you guys are a family, couple", happy together, It would be terrific to hear this publicly. Our VERY best to you BOTH. Regards from Phuket - Thailand 🙂
I was actually on 2 cathay airways flight just weeks ago and they were very much better than your experience last year! Would love to see you do another review of cathay honestly!!
Very nice. I'm always amazed how the Middle East and Far East carriers outshine, outperform, and at sometimes cheaper prices than most European and US carriers. Their products are just a cut above!
Yeah. If you want to go to Europe from Asia, usually Asian/Middle-Eastern Careers are way cheaper (unless you’re flying with a airline from your own country)
Dan i think i was captured on your video. i think i was onboard the HVN B787 at 5:20 and yes the weather matches up, and i indeed saw your Cathay Pacific A350 taxiing by.

frequent flyer between Sydney and Hong Kong since the early 90's, the last several weeks flying between Sydney, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Taipei, and that's the worst experience i've ever had with CX.
I wish Cathay come back to Dublin so I can spot their A350 and work on it. As I have heard a lot of positive reviews on this aircraft and it being my favourite aircraft. I'll fly on it one day
I flew Cathay Pacific pre-pandemic from London-HK-Australia and it was the worst experience I’ve ever had. Yes, I was in economy but after my experience with Emirates and Qatar the food and service was appalling. Arriving in HK and trying to find my way around was one of worst times as the ground staff weren’t helpful in the slightest. Never again will I fly this airline-an absolute disgrace!
Hi there. I can assure you that Cathay Pacific used to be one of the top ten airlines in the world. We were pretty good pre-pandemic, but when it comes to Emirates and Qatar, nothing compares to them! Thanks for flying with us though! :))
This is a prototypical business class seat it's practical. If you're super tall and have big feet just snag a bulkhead seat if you flying an airline where you put your feet into a cubby
2007 to 2010 Cathay was in bad condition. Was flying every 6 weeks to Hong Kong. Broken Seats, broken Entertainment system, dirty cabine etc. When i was able to fly with Air China it was a pleasure. New airplanes, very comfortable and clean.
I simply don't understand why the customers, especially those non-cantonese speaking Chinese customers have to experience the poor cabin services. I mean it's not your customer's fault that you don't make decent amount of money, right? The toxic workplace culture and lack of ethics are slowing killing the company as a whole.
Coz that crew only speaks in English actually, she didn’t do anything in front of the customers . somehow when the crew are chit chatting at the back of the plane, a China customer over heard their conversation and exaggerated about the issue. The crew is not insulting anyone in front of the mainlander. It is the low confidence and self esteem mainlanders have, always trying to play a victim. Every Hongkonger knows this and they can’t stand their bad attitude anymore.
I flew out to Asia from London between Jan and March. So i flew London to Singapore via SQ where i arrived for 5 hours and rather than staying around Changi airport went to meet some friends around joo chiat in Katong. I later took a Cathay flight to HK and i was so surprised at the different service i was provided. It was just little more comfortable and the food for what was a 4 hour flight was very decent. I came back to S'pore with Cathay and yeah experienced the same service. I think in future i might consider Cathay when flying across into Asia
I also find CX's reverse herringbone seats to be very well designed, visually and functionally. The A350 version is a touch more refined and modernized than those on the 777s and 330s which I think is the right move. Not too charmed by the renderings of their new business class seats though.

The TPE-HKG leg was always great (even if it's a short one), but always feel the HKG-CGK service is so bad (almost every time).
Probably the CGK flight nowadays are mostly turnaround flight for the crew. It’s more tiring to operate a CGK turnaround than a long haul flight.
My Dad was a Cathay Captain for 30+ years. While retired he doesn't have much good to say about CX today.
do you mind elaborating? interesting to know from pilot perspective
Yep, the moral amongst the staff are very low. They have lost their pride. As reflected by the recent CX stewardesses incidence.
@@goodshipkaraboudjanMay I know which airline you stayed with? Are you still flying?
Love your honest review of Cathay Pacific....pls keep the videos coming ☺
I'm taking Cathay Pacific for my holiday to China and back (AMS-HKG-CAN and back). Curious to see the Economy class experience. I just hope the first flight leaves and arrives on time as I have a 1 hour and 50 minutes transfer. Thanks Dan for showing us around this video!
Man, I rarely get to travel anymore, seeing Cathay and HKG again brings tears to my eyes ;u;
CX is still the best airline in the world. SQ got nothing compared to CX
I have to agree. SQ’s standards have just gone down. CX has managed to maintain a leading status despite being grounded during COVID
You don't speak blanket in English, you can't have it😂😂😂
I will add that I used to be long-haul cabin crew so I have an understanding about cabin service. Regular walk-throughs were a must as it's also to do with safety.
Cathay Pacific will always be a sentimental favourite of mine, but it's too bad they've fallen behind their main competitors in so many areas, even before the Covid restrictions.
What a good pick to post about Cathay Pacific when it's in the news😂
Thank you, Dan. It’s always a pleasure watching your videos, it is indeed a pure enjoyment. And I really appreciate your talents and efforts that you devoted in your work. Have a great and productive Thursday.
Well, Cathay is a complicated airline… but I still like it. Based on this video from Dan, I know what to expect from Cathay when I’m flying with them next: prepare to wait long for less than average meals, and don’t expect too much from the service.
Dan-
I just wanted to say thank you so much for everything you do. Your videos are the best flight review videos in the world. I don't get to fly much, but I love dreaming about getting to fly tons when I am an adult and want to travel the world. You have inspired me to do so much. Thank you again!!!

Took my first international flight with Cathay in 2019. From jhb to Hong Kong than China. I was happy with everything from their service from their food which I still believe it the best thus far as I’ve been on qatar and emirate oh and Hong Kong airlines. They are the best on food thus far for me.
I like Singapore Airlines but don’t know why they don’t have direct flights to HK anymore.
I have flown with Cathay Pacific and it has been an excellent airline. Having travelled in economy, premium economy, business and first class. All trips have been amazing. The service and quality is always good. Such a fan.
You picked the perfect time for posting a CX video lol.
If you can‘t speak English, don’t comment it

Thanks for another informative review. It would be great to see some reviews on Airlines/flights in and from Australia if you ever decide to travel to this part of the world.😊
Dan, I can tell you that CX has been cutting plenty of budgets on catering products following the revival. Don't expect too fancy from them...
Letting one's partner have the upgrade when only one of you clears, is the among the wisest bits of advice I've ever received. "Happy spouse, happy house," as they say.
Hey Dan,am super glad that this showed up under you latest as i didnt get an alert for it & i love your content.

This Video As Usual Is Quality :)
Low salary justifies racism and unprofessional conduct? Preposterous.
@@brandrange2288 no it doesn’t. And for your reference i did NOT even mention anything about racism in that comment.
It's been really rough for the crew and CX since HK had very tough pandemic restrictions over a long period of time, but keep up the nice work and the passengers all know the crew are all trying the very best.
@@Tony-mx6oz and we certainly will :))
@@brandrange2288 - Please show me where racism is in the comment above... Also, a point is being made that Cathay Pacific is paying the employees not enough to care about their jobs. That is an issue with employees worldwide due to the fact they are underpaid.
I hope this video is not a PR campaign for the recent discrimination case. A Recording of Cathay's employees went viral over the internet. One said to a customer "If you cannot say ‘blanket’, you cannot have it"
always wait for these videos :) in 360p. 😂😂 but great video
Overall a pretty good experience! Thanks for sharing.
I love your practical insights such as "fly premium during daytime and if the price is about half the price charged for business"
Unfortunately the thing ruining Cathay is the hk people working there 😢
There are so many emotional ties with HKIA and CX for hk people.
Great, extensive & detailed video.
Amazing video Dan ❤
I'm proud to work for Cathay Pacific as a Flight Attendant ❤✈
HKIA's T1 main concourse, opened in 1998, looks better than almost any airport or airport terminal built since. It's aged so well because it's more bare bones.
Just flew Cathay Pacific from Seoul to Hong Kong yesterday lmao. Perfect legroom, good meals but again lack of manpower…. Took them an hour after take off to serve the meal, and another 30mins of waiting after everyone finished their meals😅
Cathay on point today on HKG-JFK, Cathay delight was a bliss! Thanks for the hint!
Good stuff, Dan🤌🏻✨...airports are literally our 🌍
I flew Cathay Pacific in business in March from Manchester to Hong Kong with work. The Pier Lounge in HK is amazing. The food and service on board really let them down. Food was very bland and limited choices on the flight back- no starter and only two dessert choices despite what was on the menus. The TV sound ended up out of sync too. Agree the seats were fantastic, loads of room.
Good timing to released this great video.
Cathay's main problem is the average service and the considerably more expensive ticket price compared to its competitors.
My mum was upgraded from HKG > LHR a few years ago in the summer - she checked in quite late as was on a non-connecting flight but suspect it was also overbooked.
She had no loyalty status. like literally zero :P
This also happened to me and my wife once on a NRT-HKG flight.
Yesssss love seeing these notifications of new NSD uploads!!
Finally, another Cathay Pacific video, and right on time because I'm going to Japan using Cathay Pacific, so I'm glad Dan gave us the current situation at Cathay Pacific
Everything would be good if you speak good english not just english 😂😂😂
so, are you happy with your selection to fly with Cathay?
@@stanleymaximillian8403 not entirely
@@curious5887 Cathay is still a decent airline. It's miles better than the national airline of my country so I'd take Cathay Pacific anyday.
Plus, lots of airlines are facing backlash at the moment, mainly because of all the budget cuts and whatnot they have to do since air travel is almost like or already is at pre-pandemic times.
hope you had a good experience, or at least not a horrible one.
I enjoyed a superb return flight from Seoul to London with Cathay Pacific earlier this year. It was an absolute steal and, 3 months on, I'm still wearing the in-flight slippers around the house 😛
Cheers Dan for the update,,,,peace and happiness on your travels
Awesome job dan .
Your bathroom problem is why I ALWAYS book an isle access seat regardless of class and/or seat plans. I think it's been nearly 40 years since I sat in a window seat that had a seat next to me. Gotta love the 1-2-1.
I was technically in frame at 8:10 XD
they recently updated the showers in the first class lounge after i got stuck in a 12 hour layover and now they have kohler anthem dtv shower systems and they are very luxurious
I think youtube should put" this video is party or in whole paid by cathay pacific" under its title 😂😂
Great Video Dan
Fantastic reviews and videos, we follow you "every step of the way"!
Clearly obvious, but never stated, "you guys are a family, couple", happy together, It would be terrific to hear this publicly.

I was actually on 2 cathay airways flight just weeks ago and they were very much better than your experience last year! Would love to see you do another review of cathay honestly!!
I'm wanting to try them again soon too!
used to fly Cathay as a kid back in 2005 to 2010 they were the best back then and always used to get free toys and merch every time.
Very nice. I'm always amazed how the Middle East and Far East carriers outshine, outperform, and at sometimes cheaper prices than most European and US carriers.
Their products are just a cut above!
Yeah. If you want to go to Europe from Asia, usually Asian/Middle-Eastern Careers are way cheaper (unless you’re flying with a airline from your own country)
heeeey what a nice surprise to see your video!
Flying with them in couple months. Thanks for the video
How did it go?
Loved the Jimbo reference 😂❤
I flew business and premium economy on Cathay after the pandemic and both of the were amazing
Dan i think i was captured on your video. i think i was onboard the HVN B787 at 5:20 and yes the weather matches up, and i indeed saw your Cathay Pacific A350 taxiing by.
Very interesting review. We have pretty polar opinions so will be very interesting to see how my Business Cathay flight next month goes. I'll report in.
great video. thx for sharing. that dining setting seems is downgraded when flying in business class in boeing 777-300 in 2019.
Thanks Dan great video
frequent flyer between Sydney and Hong Kong since the early 90's, the last several weeks flying between Sydney, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Taipei, and that's the worst experience i've ever had with CX.
best video by far!!👍👍👍
I was just thinking when you were gonna fly cathay again then this came out!
The blanket is as thin as a carpet. 🤣🤣🤣 oops
I wish Cathay come back to Dublin so I can spot their A350 and work on it. As I have heard a lot of positive reviews on this aircraft and it being my favourite aircraft. I'll fly on it one day
Awesome video as always. Really cool to see that you flew the Prem Econ ! Also, I had a good chuckle at Oscar’s drag race reference 😂
no wait Oskar going "it's my special day!!!!!" is perfection
This is a prototypical business class seat it's practical. If you're super tall and have big feet just snag a bulkhead seat if you flying an airline where you put your feet into a cubby
CX were always my favourite when I lived in HKG, but that was a while ago now.
Good point. We didn’t mean for the poor service. Sometimes we just get tired between flights, which never happened before covid.
I think in future i might consider Cathay when flying across into Asia
great flight i enjoyed it greetings from the netherlands
Love the new video
The Cabin: screaming babies, people getting sick, meltdown.
Dan: let’s dive into the amenity kit~
I also find CX's reverse herringbone seats to be very well designed, visually and functionally. The A350 version is a touch more refined and modernized than those on the 777s and 330s which I think is the right move. Not too charmed by the renderings of their new business class seats though.
Hi Dan, i am looking forward to seeing a flight review from Zürich to Singapore recently
