KLM: Upper deck Business Class on a rare 747 Combi

- The Boeing 747-400, the Queen of the Skies, is rapidly disappearing from our skies. Even rarer is the 747 Combi variant which has additional cargo space on the main passenger deck. Only one airline in the world is still flying these old Combos. And that airline is celebrating 100 years of flying this year - it’s KLM.
It was therefore a great pleasure to experience my very first KLM long haul business class flight on one of these very rare 747-400 Combi aircraft.
This KLM business class flight review covers my journey from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Chicago O’Hare.

I enjoy your reviews. Very interesting and informative. Just thought I would share this: Since 1985 whenever I fly, I always have a pre and post flight chat in the cockpit. The pilots enjoy talking to me just as much as I enjoy talking to them. Yes I have posed in the pilots,t seat,their idea not mine and yes I ha e been in a 747 cockpit. Oh and I chat with flight attendants too.
I'm sorry...but that 777 at 2:44 was not for the 100th anniversary but for the 2016 Rio Olympic games! Still a great video.

The CitzenM Hotel in Amsterdam if you get a room overlooking the airport it is a amazing room and a grate view
Grate is a covering or something you do to cheese. Its great.not grate.
I'd recommand you to try the 777 or 787 business class, you will be even more impressed! :)

You're right - just seen that's what KLM call them on their website. Have changed the title and description. At the time Combi didn't sound right because in Australia that's the well entrenched name for the old VW vans hence me saying combo in the video.
Anybody else out there calling them a Combo?

Always good to see our (and your) heritage being appreciated. One minor detail: the PH BVA, the triple 7 with the orange livery, has its orange livery to bring our Olympic team to the games and pick them up, the last time the olympics were held.
Ah yes thanks. I had seen the social media posts a couple of weeks before filming of the 100 year celebrations where they used this aircraft so just assumed that was it. The Dutch Olympic team never gets much attention here in Australia so missed it at the time - that said during the Sydney Olympics the Dutch had the very best party venue right in the middle of Darling Harbour.
@@DennisBunnikTravels The Whole reason the Orange Pride was used during the 100 Years event was as a Replacement to the Late arrival of the 787-10. (Inside News from The Hangar :P)
I also flew this route, and enjoyed every moment of it. If you can, try seat 1A if you ever get the change before the 747 is phased out. 1A is in front of the cockpit on the lower deck in the nose. It's the only place with a 1-2 configuration, so you have a very awesome experience.

I really enjoy KLM’s service! Have a few of those gin houses somewhere.
Have been in the 747 cockpit a long time ago (pre 9/11) when I used to fly back and forth from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur a lot for school. There was even a time when I was sitting in business and recognised the pilot’s name as one of my friend’s dad’s so when I told them I was on the flight, he got me into the cockpit as we were about to land in KLIA and was actually sitting in there during landing! That was quite an experience for a 15 year old me!

@@DennisBunnikTravels pretty sure it wouldn't be allowed nowadays (or there would be a bunch of security checks that need to be done)...! Was really lucky to have been able to do it and my friend's dad was telling me all the new tech (at the time) on the KLIA runway.

I’m so envious and, somewhat, jealous of you; for the reason that today no passenger would be allowed near the cockpit door let alone inside. What's more the last time I paid a quick visit to an airplane's cockpit was when I was only 14 and that was on a BAe-146, nevertheless it was exhilarating and something special!
A fantastic video. I loved getting to finally see what's upstairs on the 747. I think I've only ever flown one once, and even going near those stairs was above my pay grade.
Sadly that depends on how the airline wanted the plane built I flew Cathay Pacific once and business class was in the upper deck. Some airlines even have only two classes: business and economy on the plane. That can be bad because one European airline put economy in the upper deck. It did not look even slightly comfortable...
Very nice, anytime I am able to grab a ride on a 747 I jump at the chance, great video Dennis, I believe its been a while where I’ve seen that type of detailed service and it seems other airlines can take a lesson

One of the few 2-2-2 Business Class product that is actually worth flying on. Plus, love KLM coz their crews are very avgeek friendly
Broke the piggybank last summer to fly this to New York one last time before the queen retires. Despite de broken IFE the upper deck was a delight to be in !

It is really on the last legs that 747 combi, sat in one (the bangkok) and is now sitting next to the airport as a future building. Terrible airco and even worse entertainment system, and old interior. Glad that plane is out of order although I’m glad that I could cross it of my list of airplanes to fly with. KLM service is great though, especially the food when you fly from Schiphol.
I love KLM because of friendly cabin crews and exemplary meals, as well as nice touch of mini Dutch pottery house. Flew with them in old lie-flat business class from KUL-AMS-BCN with top notch services 😊👍🏻
KLM is one of the last major passenger airlines that operates a fleet of 747's. It will be a sad day when the famous blue 747 disappears from the skies.
Not true....British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Lufthansa, Qantas, Air China and Air India still operate 747-400's.

Enjoyed the video. Have to agree with you the service, food and experience in KLM Business Class is very good. Definitely not the same experience as some other airlines but very comfortable and the crews very good. Did transatlantic on an A330 back in June and like you found the Lounge in Amsterdam very full but as our layover was short it was not a problem. Using Whatsapp on the Wi-Fi during the flight on the A330 was able to keep in touch.

I flew KLM 747-400 AMS - BKK - SYD return a very long time ago in economy- before terrorism, air rage and non smoking. It was fantastic! Open bar all the way - I had an inside the middle 4 seats at the rear (in the naughty smoking cabin). My row mates and I had an amazing experience- I think the MO at the time was ‘give them lots to drink and they will sleep and not be a problem’. They were very accurate! 😆 ah for those old days Xxx
Hi Dennis. I have always loved upstairs on a 747, it just feels more exclusive and quieter than down below. I was surprised to see that KLM dont have the big storage bins under the window like BA do. This gives immediate access to your briefcase for work, and also provides a large side table when closed. Other than that, I liked the look of KLMs service. They are usually the cheapest long haul business class offering in Europe too. Here's to more great flights, Jonathan

Today will be the last landing ever of a KLM 747 at Schiphol Airport. The 747s will be retired early after this due to the Corona virus crisis. The end of an era.
Hi Dennis, first of all, my compliments for the way you pronounce Schiphol. The orange 777, also known as the orange pride, got this livery in 2016, the 787-10 with the 100 sign is the biggest thing we’ve seen to date for KLM’s 100th birthday. I couldn’t resist correcting you as a Dutch av-geek... apart from that, keep up the good work!
When I flew KLM 787 biz the captain came out and greeted every passenger with a short chat too, possibly because the cabin was so small.

Great video! KLM are my favourite airline. I fly with them a few times a year and they are always great to fly with! Hopefully one day I'll get to fly in their business class!
I once flew from Amsterdam to Chicago in a KLM 747 but not in Business Class. I enjoyed it so much that KLM became my favourite airline and it still is.

Ive watched alot of reviews on KLM and nearlly 100% has been positive.I noticed in your video there was no filming of the cabin crew again something I find a bit strange especially as the Dutch are such a friendly lot.

747 Combi, During my time as a Fueler @ KSFO I was working the " Air China " 747 Combi I was amazed to watch them unload from the upper deck Light Bulbs yes Light Bulbs....lol

Great view on take off ! Were your nuts warm ?? The seat and surrounds are showing their age !! But it is a 747 over 20 years old!! Obviously the short comings with the seat were made up for by the excellent food and drinks service ! Glad you enjoyed the flight DB and I look forward to our next trip together!! ps I am off the KL next Thursday with Malaysia Airlines and have watched again your flight review and have avoided the "Throne Seats" 6 A to KL and 4 A back to Melbourne!!

Hi Dennis KLM uses their 747 combi on a JFK trip as well. KLM643/KLM644. I've been told they use it on this route to transport horses. Flying their 747 combi is something I really hope I am able to do before they're retired!!!
I flew on a KLM 747 combi from Amsterdam to JFK in June 2002, their evening flight from AMS.

Hé, I’m dutch so I always look critically to flight reviews like this😂. I have a few things to announce, like the usb port, the b747 business class does have one, but it isn’t easy to find I must admit, it’s almost under the seat. For the rest is the b747 of klm really a old aircraft so I fles on it 3 days ago and I must admit that the IF really isn’t that good, but on other klm wide-body aircrafts you will find way more better IF systems. So I hope that you will have better experiences the next time you fly KLm

Yeah I let the crew know so they could put on maintenance report. This was a full flight so no opportunity to change seats.
I flew the KLM combi way back in 1987 from JFK to AMS - love KLM they have a very strong User experience team and always innovating and enhancing the flying experience.Always fly them nowadays from Singapore to Bali on short breaks great crew aircrafts Happy 100th birthday KLM
I flew with KLM in June. Seat 4K, one of only 3 single seats in the main deck business class. I went out of my way to find the flight that used the 747-400 instead of a 777-300. In 2 years they are gone. Next time im flying with family so we will be upstairs. It is a very nice touch when the pilot comes in and says hello to everyone and the flight attendants always greet you by name. Ive been flying on and off with KLM since 1996
Hello Dennis, I have just two comments: I think for the main meal it should be Cheese AND Dessert, not Or. And secondly, I wish your videos were longer cause time flies watching them! Good work and thanks!

Awesome video, i really love the 747 of KLM. For flying it is not the best but it doesn`t matter because it is a classic plane.
I flew one of those from LAX to AMS last Oct. The plane was a little old but the service was outstanding and it was fun to get a little gin house.
An enjoyable video Dennis. KLM have a reputation of being a good airline and Schipol is my favourite airport.
It's sad that the 747s are disappearing, but fortunately KLM is one of the airlines who's donated one of their aircraft for static display at the Corendon Village Hotel just outside Amsterdam - it's definitely worth reading about how they managed to haul the huge jet all the way from the airport to the hotel - they had to pull it across fields and highways, and the motorways nearby were closed so people couldn't rubberneck and risk getting into crashes.
Ah, you were lucky to take off from the Polderbaan, the runway that is one timezone away from the main terminals ;-) Great video Dennis, will leave you a like!
My problem with KLM is that their seats are designed for Dutch passengers who are all 7 feet tall, so anyone who isn't a giant will find themselves in discomfort for the entire flight. This is bad on long haul routes, where blood circulation to legs and feet is at risk of clotting thanks to the seat design.
I got to fly the KLM 747 combi from LA-Amsterdam. What a unique plane and I’m glad I got to fly it.

I flew KLM Business a few times from Tokyo to Schipol and back. The seats are very comfortable and the cabin crew were very helpful and professional. On this route the meal choices were either a Japanese menu or a traditional Dutch menu with stamp-pot. I get a lot of Japanese food at home, so I went for the Dutch food, which was nice, but much simpler than the fancy meal that you had. One nice thing is that there is a snack and drinks bar at the back of the upper deck, so you can walk back there to get more drinks or small snacks at any time.
I would still have to say that ANA's Business class is best, but I thought that KLM Business class on this route was much better than Air France. The Air France seats and space were very disappointing--I even had to sit 3-abreast, so there wasn't a lot of amenity space.
I'm surprised that KLM is still flying a Combi. I thought that these were a bit of a fire hazard, but I guess that for tulips and cheese, they'd be safe enough.

Finally KLM - awesome! :) If you want to try their more modern hard product, the 787 is your best bet with the usual 1-2-1 config :)

this KLM combi B 744 s have a horrible economy class...happy that KLM is withdrawing them....have flown them twice Amsterdam -Bangkok and back..awful economy class cramped..KLM has lousy catering..better eat at chinese/Japanese restuarant at Schiphol before departure..

Thanks for the report. Did you know Qantas had a small fleet of B747-200 Combis back in the day? VH-ECA/B/C all had side cargo doors for a time. They were christened City of Sale, City of Swan Hill and City of Shepparton respectively. VH-ECB had the honours of being the first Qantas B747 delivered with Rolls Royce engines.
A slow Friday catching up on old TRs. Not sure how I’ve missed this one before - I flew on PH-BFT MXP-SIN-SYD way back in 1998. Interesting that, having retired, it’s back hauling freight again!

Both. Park at cargo terminal first to unload. Takes about 2 hours.
It will be loaded the gate. The cargo will be delivered to the airport. Richard is incorrect. So while the passengers are boarding, they are loading the cargo (as seen in the video)

The lounge is not packed because of the children’s holidays - in your shots, there are NO children visible in the lounge. The lounge is packed because KLM allows all KLM business travelers, plus all SkyTeam business travelers, plus SkyTeam elites to use the lounge and it’s a very busy airport in the middle of the day, when you’re departing for North America.
Also, the aircraft is called “Combi”, not “Combo”.
I’m flying KLM business class in December. This video made me more excited. 😊
