A nephew used a power drill to ease the opening of the Travoy's opening. just a little drilled away did the trick. No problems since.

Great explanation, I came here because I flipped my Travoy over and the plastic part seemed to have turned around but when I turned the trailer back up the plastic part seems to be ok again... I am just afraid when riding that it might break now because it has been stressed so much... nice to know that there is screw inside under the foam, now I know where to check.

Hi Peter, I got the Radical Design Cyclone for some years. Its a perfect trailer for the Brompton. Its a bit expensive but very strong and ligthweight. You can put a lot of weight in it. The brakes of the Brompton can take it.

That's so weird! I know they have that part for replacement. You just have to "unroll" the foam to uncover a bolt. Remove that bolt and the rubber/plastic connector comes out. I've used my Travoy for 3 years with no issues. And I've flipped it WHILE RIDING for at least 5 times. It's very elastic IMO, it always yields and comes back into the original position. Maybe yours is covered under warranty, if your trailer is less than 3 years old.

I had mine for over 4 years already. I used to use it a fair bit. I had no complains about it over the years, but surely we can improve the design of the connector. Anyway, thanks for sparing a few minutes to watch the video and commenting on it. Have a good day ahead.

Thanks for a useful review. It seems that a trailer hitch to the rear axle is stronger and more flexible. I always have an extra emergency strap between trailer and bicycle should the worst happen.

Hi Peter, I have the same problem with the Travoy connectors. In fact I broke two connectors. So right now i have stocked up on the connector part (bought 3 more).
Yes, never never park your Brompton with the Travoy trailer connected to the hinge.
I look forward to see your ‘hour glass’ connector ◡̈

    Thanks for the alert.
I do not leave the Travoy on when parking the bike (flipping the rear wheel/triangle under).
Burley instructions do indicate the tow bar should be horizontal.
The PARKED and RIDING heights only differ by about 10mm, but lifting to clear the ground to swing the rear wheel under is where all the stress occures. My E version Brompton (Mudguard less & Rackless) needs 250mm+ lift. So lifting to PARK, takes the hitch pin out of Vertical (plumb) by a considerable amount.
All the best with accomodating that amount of movement, and some people will be very generous clearing the ground.
    Thanks for the vlogs
    Take care.
I would advise NOT to Park the Brompton with the Travoy hitched.
Only ever have the Travoy attached to the Brompton in the RIDING mode .

Even if the seatpost is in the right angle, so that the holding pin is perfectly strait up (90 degree) there should be enogh room for movement up and down. While riding every bump or dip up or down will change the vertical angle between the Travoy and the bike. So that movement while riding is always stressing the material of the connecting parts. (I don't own a Travoy so this is just my theoretical thougth process with a big questionsmark at the end). So your plan to improve the connection with a whole which gives the connection room for movement sounds great and ist mandatory in my mind. Please chair your experience and how you did it. In my mind a cardan joint (also called universal joint) would be the best connection. So since right and left movement is possible through the given connection there schould be another joint for up and down movement. Your solution will provide a limited up and down movement (if I understand you right) and the dragging force will be concentrated on the one poit of the connection between the curved hole in the plastic part and the metal pin. If you have two axels (one as is and one new 90 degrees rotated) the draging force would be evenly spreaded onto the entire axels. That beeing said I have no clue how one could actually solve the problem with a hack. I am very curious how your sulotion turns out in reality.
A Travoy is on my whish list for quite some time. So many thanks for adressing and chairing that theme. Great channel!

On some bikes they flip like a bandit. Mine is very unstable on my 20" Downtube Dahon clone, flips every mile, but very stable on my road bikes. Will have to check seat angle, but feel it is lateral stability of seat post worsened by wide gearing that increases lateral movement. Travoy hinges are bouncy as all get out, and maybe the stiff angled connector loads a bounce, that can rotate on a minor pavement bump into a rollover. The stiff older connectors seem vulnerable to cracking. ? how old is your Travoy? could they be old stock?
Burley did a big redesign of the Travoy recently, and this was on an original design. the original hitch also can interfere with the fold and distort the seat tube. Not sure how many hitch changes they made beyond the QR. Plastic "dogbone" connectors are common on axle mount trailers, and can be easily adapted to the burley rather than fabbed.

Isn’t the main issue here that having a weight dragging from the top of the seat post imposes a strong lateral force for which it is not designed? The seat post is designed for a vertical weight of a rider not for lateral leverage. A better place to attach a trailer is to the left axle (eg Burley Nomad or Radical Design Cyclone) But even there Brompton say their warranty does not cover it, so best to tow light loads.

You are correct there. I seen those axle area’s mounting type seem to be the most sense making one. Thanks for pointing it out.

It looks like you have the old model Travoy (2010-2019) same as me. I have real problems with my kickstand. Almost as soon as I got the Travoy the kickstand got bent the wrong way, and now it's next to useless. I wonder if you had any similar experiences, or any advice on how to upgrade / fix it? I'm considering getting the new 2020 Travoy kickstand and trying to retrofit it onto mine, looks like they improved the design a lot.

I have used Travoy for heavier usage and luckily never had a problem. But I remember on one occasion that I used it the first time (I had bought the travoy secondhand) the rubber connector broke due to aging (rubber got hardened end loose its elasticity). Bought new rubber and the problem were gone. You may watch the application in my video here: ua-cam.com/video/rT2z_D4MGMM/v-deo.html sorry it was on Bahasa, and less stable video 😅

It works without any any mod applying to it, that is as long as you set the height right and try to avoid having the Travoy attached when folding/unfolding the bike.

I am a small women and i am not able to put the coupling at the right high on my bike (on not a single bike i own, and i own three) because my saddle is not high enought.... i have other trailers and this one looks very unstable, the whole drawbar wobbles. think it will brake soon.

I need some advice. I'm considering getting the black lacquer or flame lacquer for my 1st Brompton... But I have been reading about paint chip, rust and difficult to maintain it... Should I reconsider getting the painted coloured versions than the lacquered ones?

    • @davidburgess5419
      @davidburgess5419 4 роки тому

Vote for lacquered, always fetches a premium when buying or selling secondhand

You might want to put a question on a Facebook Brompton group for feedback. I’ve read that some owners have been disappointed that rust is visible through the lacquer.
