Fantastic episode! Well edited, filmed and scored. I'm an industrial designer and at one point I was actually doing some small work for Burley in Eugene Oregon. I was very impressed with their team and their designs but seriously consider this: Even after being in the offices where the Travoy was created and on display, you both did a better job showing the full potential of the product and selling me on what a great design it actually is.

Evan, you’re making us blush, and we’re so glad you liked the video! How cool that you were able to work with Burley. We were talking back and forth with them and they were incredibly nice and helpful. Answered a million of our questions which leads me to believe that if we ever do have any issues with our Travoy, their customer service will be equally good.
I have to give credit to Drake. He spent a lot of time putting together a great outline with all the info we wanted to include in the video. It made it so much easier for me when I was in front of the camera.
Plus, we just both love the trailer so much that it’s rather easy to wax on about it. 😆
Hope you’re having a good week! -Mo

Great review. Our Burley Travoy trailer is probably our most used item when we go ashore short of our big blue IKEA bags and our big heavy-duty insulated zip-up cold bag. Those bags actually live inside the trailer bag most of the time unless we are traveling light. They can be hung over the handle of the trailer out back when loaded to give extra carrying capacity. The blue IKEA bags are almost perfect for this at the top portion of the trailer. Bungie cords are not even needed when used as a hand cart.
We take our trailer along on many shore excursions as a hand cart if we have the slightest inclination to purchase anything of any size or weight or if we will be walking a longer distance. We actually use our trailer simply as a hand cart without the bikes 95% of the time. It carries weight effortlessly so we can lug warmer jackets, an umbrella, water bottles and even pack a picnic lunch and not be burdened with heavy bags full of stuff over our shoulders.
I'm not 100% sold on having even compact & lightweight 16" non-electric folding bikes on a smaller cruising boat even after cruising 5+ years full-time with them, but even if we got rid of our bikes eventually we would never get rid of our Travoy trailer. Folded and empty it takes up almost no room on the boat or dinghy -unlike the bulky bikes even when in their "handy" zip-up carry/storage bags I would recommend the Burley Travoy to any cruiser -even if they didn't have bikes to tow them. Other than the somewhat hefty price tag they have no real downside.
We have loaded our trailer up well past the 60lb limit many times and it is still going strong. I wouldn't recommend overloading while towing behind a bicycle but when hand-towing it while walking the trailer sees a lot less bouncing and stress. Curbs and potholes can be traversed much more carefully and the trailer babied when overloaded. I have often strapped two 5-gallon jerry cans full of diesel or water on the trailer which is 80lbs of liquid plus the jugs themselves and hauled them for miles very carefully -especially over curbs and the trailer has held up well for years of this abuse.
This trailer is tough but in constant marine use will eventually require a bit of maintenance. I would suggest you purchase some spares from the Burley website that you will likely need before you need them. The rubber dust covers for the wheel release buttons will snag on things and eventually pop off and get lost. They cost under $2 each from the Burley site. Salt spray on dinghy rides will get everywhere but the aluminum frame is fairly corrosion-resistant other than a little patina on some of the rivets.
The wheel bearings however are where corrosion will attack -especially if you have lost one or both of the rubber dust covers. Burley offers a wheel bearing replacement set for about $20 on their site but these are simply common R8 bearings and the R8-2RS double rubber sealed versions are a more corrosion-proof upgrade over the steel shield versions which come standard. These can be found at any good auto parts or bearing shop much cheaper than from Burley or perhaps from a well-stocked bike repair shop. They can also be found on amazon or ebay for only about $10-12 for a 10-pack. At that price it makes sense to just have them aboard as spares for the inevitability of them going bad.
With two bearings per wheel it isn't the overloading that causes failure but corrosion from salt in the marine environment. The inner bearing isn't really protected at all like the outer one is under the rubber dust cover which also protects the pushbutton release. Bearing corrosion will eventually happen so keep an eye on them and maybe smear a bit of grease on the exposed surface to help protect them and have spares on hand or buy some at the first sign of any corrosion issues.
Replacement is easy at least. The only tools necessary are a circlip pliers and a screwdriver to carefully bang the old bearing out from the inside after the quick release axle is slid out after the circlip is removed with circlips pliers.
    Fair winds

So you have one as well? It is just so cool and works incredibly well for a sailboat. All of the other trailers we researched or saw had some flaw or another…they seemed pretty cheaply made or, more often, the didn’t break down well. I’m so impressed by how little space the Travoy takes up. Ha! Especially since we’re bursting at the seams lately. Thinking we might need to do some belated Spring cleaning if we want to get another trailer for Drake’s bike!

Michael, I had a scooter for a while and just...couldn't get into it? It was fine and really good quality, but I never enjoyed just sitting there; I missed actually riding a bike. And, of course, if the battery ever ran out then I was just stuck pushing it. Finally I ended up trading the scooter to a marina in exchange for a berth which worked out great for us.
We will definitely do a video on the bikes at some point. They take up a fair amount of space, but it's been worth it for us. Plus I just la la love my bike! 😍-Mo

I've been playing around with various configurations trying to nail the recommended 28 to 34 inch height. Burley didn't seem to receptive to my suggestion that they consider creating some adapters for recumbents.

"I read with interest the observations addressing the Burley Travoy bicycle trailer, since I have owned an early model used occasionally the past few years, and have recently made the jump to the updated version.
The differences may appear relatively small, but as has been noted in other contexts, “the devil is in the details”. With the older trailer it has regularly been a losing effort in my justifications to use it, with vexing problems in trying to figure out how to keep bulky loads away from rubbing tires, maintaining everything balanced on its single flimsy support post, and generally loading it into supermarket or home supply shopping carts (with the support post invariably getting trapped in carts’ steel wire mesh).
The new model has been a revelation, with “stout” coming to mind as an adjective to describe the design and construction compared to the somewhat lighter old model.
Comments have been made about a lack of a functional bag being shipped with the new model. Fortunately I kept the bag from my old trailer, which fits equally well on the new one (albeit with several patches sewn over holes worn into it by the tires.)
In experimenting with other bags, I have attached ½-inch tarp grommets to an old two-foot coated nylon duffel. Speaker wire or carabiner clips can be strung through the grommets, and slipped over trailer attachments with functionality nearly equivalent to Burley plastic clips. Upon arrival to my destination its shoulder strap serves with much more flexibility than the simple grab handles of my old Burley bag.
In short, instead of struggling to justify an effort to use the new trailer - as has been the case with the old model - I have had such good experiences on the road with it in general, and more specifically in transitions to public transport, shopping trips, etc., that I find myself frequently dreaming up new reasons to attach it for my bicycle excursions around the city.
I am, however, knocking off one star in the rating due to yet another “detail”. With only minimal use and strain on my original trailer, three strap/bag plastic clips have cracked, rendering them unusable. For a few cents more Burley could instead have attached metal clips to the straps included with the new trailer, that would not carry this risk of breakage." Cheers

Hi, i don’t think the Butley Travoy makes the bike any more stable than without. Definitely not like training wheels.

Good idea and I get the convenience. But here is my problem, you load it with your groceries as you walk through the store and then you have to unload it at the checkout, just to load it again as you ready to leave the store. Not very practical or time saving, is it? Wouldn't be better to just use store's shopping cart and load your bags afterward?

You have to unload your groceries at checkout regardless of whether you use your Burley Travoy or the store’s grocery cart. But at least if you fill your Burley Travoy to full capacity before checking out then you know that it will all fit back in there when you’re heading out.

$600 in sunny Australia for that bike trailer 😂
That buys a lot of Ubers to the shops
Oh well. Need some Germans to introduce mass production efficiencies to these trailers.

I love the trailer.... but not willing to sell children to afford to buy one. A comparable pull (by hand) trolley/cart with bag, with higher weight capacity, is between $50 ~ $70.
I realize beefing up the wheel assembly to real tires, and adding the capability to attach to a bike's seat post is a large upgrade.
But it is *NOT* a couple of upgrades that justifies a 400% mark-up. That is obviously a price gouge.
Love the item, hate the marketing/pricing.
    Just MHO.
