Do the challengers have the same issue?
since it supposedly happened right after oil change on this one... did you check the oil filter to make sure the guy removed the clear plastic dirt/dust cover on the filter before install? That would be a big oil restriction that could cause lifter plunger collapse.
0w 40 motor oil solves all these problems Scotty! I run it in all my modern engines that require a 20 weight motor oil. So it boils down to a oil pressure issue due to the thin oil already being too thin and then it gets diluted because of extended oil change intervals set forth by the manufacturer.
Put a hellcat (6.1) oil pump on there. That seems to be the solution for the 5.7 and 6.4. Saw it on YT by a CDJR mechanic. Also the lifters in the 5.7 don't have a weep hole like 6.1 and 6.4.
As a Ram owner for that last 15 years.....this video breaks my heart LOL. I've been fortunate and had no mechanical or electrical issues with any of my 3 trucks but I know many have.

He did say on the video that the owner put in an iridium plug on #7 when it originally misfired. This is incorrect - my 2009 RAM with the 5.7 Hemi required copper only plugs every 30k miles. I bet this wasn’t done on schedule on the truck and it causes issues on top of the known idling cam issues. The idle issue is even worse on the 6.4 Hemi models.

One reason I like synthetic oil is just in case a bearing is only getting a little oil flow for some reason. Regular oil is more likely to degrade and totally stop the flow of lubrication.
Hemi owners change the oil pump to a higher pressure or volume. Use the hellcat pump or Summit racing sells two different pumps to fix this problem. One is the Melling pump. Use 5w30 oil
What this guy said.
Had a 2006 quad 4door dodge lariat loaded with everything that could be an option. Black with grey leather and chrome wheels and to this day, I think the best looking truck I ever owned. Many friends had the same truck and just after 100,000 miles they were replacing transmissions, engines you name it was extremely expensive to repair! I was lucky but! This isn't the type of stuff I like to waste time on, but it sure feels good to start understanding what goes on in an engine and to hear about wet rubber oil pump belts in newer Ford F150, leaking oil pans in those Fords, Turbos that need time to cool down, cams that dry out while idling, engines that sludge, the Ford Eco Boost engine. I'm learnin' stuff. It feels good not to be a clueless dummy about engines and trucks and small motors, etc.
Thanks Scotty for showing us how to diagnose a bad Hemi cam. That is some pretty neat sleuthing. I’ve got a mid range bidirectional OBD scanner, and I am seriously impressed by how much more capability the Autel has to drill down into the data. It has me thinking about pulling the trigger and getting the Autel despite the cost. You don’t need the full Autel capabilities that often, but boy when you do, it really pays off.
What would be the scanner you would go with? I’m curious.

Our fleet had a slew of problems with the Hemi because they idle a lot to keep the battery charging. The mechanics have tons of experience changing the valvetrain. The ones in the fleet with the V6 never seem to have trouble.

I have a 2005 Ram with a 5.7 hemi that I purchased new (way back then..) and it currently has 260,000 miles on it. I have replaced a lot of parts on the truck over the years but have not had to touch the engine or transmission. Last year my 2002 Jeep TJ engine blew which was supposedly rebuilt a year before I bought it. I had seen the receipt but who knows. the Dodge Hornet, a compact SUV from Stellantis, emerges with a substantial 517-day supply. Despite its relatively lower average selling price compared to its counterparts in the top-10 list, the Hornet grapples with sluggish sales, having moved only 939 units in the past 45 days.

bought a 2015 Ram 1500 Laramie 4wd Crew Cab. Put 65000 miles on it, spent nothing on repairs, just normal maintenance. I sold it to a friend in 2020 who has 95000 on it, still no issues. I bought a 2020-same specs. Have 40k on it, never been back for repairs....I have had a 2010 F150 previously, pretty good truck. Before that an 06 Silverado-now that was piece of junk! Will never by a gm product again!
The GM LS 5.3 and it other displacements are the best truck engines on the road . Reliable, easy to fix , cheap to fix and perform awesome and significant horse power gains are easily achieved with relatively minor upgrades. My 2011 Chevy Silverado Z71 4x4 still has almost all the original components and just over 230 thousand miles now and I don’t baby it and my maintenance schedules are almost always over due . And it’s never failed me
Just don’t get a 2014 or newer
All GM are junk from day one to date
I have an 04 Silverado extended cab 2wd with 4.8 V8 267,800 best damn truck I put a lot of miles on it in about 4 years of ownership
I had a Ram and it was a POS but at least they stepped up to the plate and fixed it every time. Once, even 6K out of warranty.
I’ve had 3 GM’s. All were POS and 9 times out of 10 GM refused to fix it.
Yeah....I had problems with Chevy dealers telling me that Chevy won't reimburse them for certain repairs on my newer Chevy truck.
Fords can have problems too.....but Ford seems to back up their products much better than GM.
At least that's my experience.
When I was a Chrysler tech I would see numerous Hemis come in with lifter noise and broken timing chains. The old 4.7 and 3.7 Powertech engines I would constantly have to replace lifters and rocker arms. I would have to replace the entire engine due to those engines dropping rocker arms.
I’d be curious what the oil change history is on this truck. Many times manufacturers get blamed for engine failures when people just never change the oil or change it every 10k miles or more.
Maybe the manufacturers should stop extending the times between oil changes required
@diyaasaeed7959 I can remember back in the early 90s running Fords on mobile one fully synthetic oil. and a good oil filter for 15k to 20k hwy miles. Never had a problem. Today the problem is junk materials and design on manufacturer's part.
I had a 2012 Ram with the Hemi. Changed my oil every 5,000 with the recommended oil type. The lifters and cam were changed once (under warranty), then the ticking came back some time later. I didn't idle my truck, but it happened anyhow. The truck had 148,000 miles on it.
I sold it.
Most likely is the fact it's a dodge
Non car people see changing the oil as a problem. They don't understand, they just want to drive.
I have a 2016 1500 Sport and love it. 287,000kms,5.7L Hemi, and no problems. Only done the rear differential and basic maintenance.
No worries, dodge transmissions and electronics , frame will fall apart very early on before your engine breaks. And do not use weak 5w20 on these need to go heavier oil. We use rotella t6 5w40, synthetic diesel oil in our fleet that has 5.7l and gm 6.0l trucks.
5w30 REDLINE makes them purr.
Real men use straight 30W
Real dumb men!
diesel oil in a gas car?? is that a thing? or did you alone make it a thing? is diesel oil thicker? Wow! tell us more! is it legal? How often do you have to change diesel oil in a gas engine?
but is thicker oil going to cause the problem with lubricating camshaft at idle worse?
My best friend has a 2013 Ram 1500. The vehicle had a broken valve spring. This is a known problem on the hemi engine of that generation. Ordered a spring compressor for that engine, and went to work. Replacing the spring was not really a problem. The problem was getting the valve cover off. In order to get clearance, I disconnected the AC lines. With the AC lines lifted, the valve cover comes right out. The engine compartment looked exactly like the truck Scotty was showing. I feel like a Ram technician knows a better way. If you know, please explain.
Also these trucks use a vast number of different ABS control units. A new unit costs a small fortune, but finding a used one is almost impossible.
My friends truck has a little over 100,000 miles, and runs great. It is faster than hell.
Just watch a video of a guy who works in a junkyard, he was showing multiple GM cars with 100k miles that had blown motors. How they stay in business amazes me.
The best way to resolve future issues on the hemi is putting in a high volume oil pump. Not sure if that's an easy thing for your everyday Stellantis owner. If I had my choice of the big 3, it's still Mopar. Yup, you may have to replace the cam at 200k miles, but it's better than being in the shop every few months fixing something stupid. Also, buy and change the right oil for your engine.
That makes sense, but why wouldn't ram just build them with a higher volume oil pump? Wouldn't it be worth the slightly higher cost, to fix the reputation of the Hemi? I have been hearing for years not to let them idle too long, that's not always possible depending on how it's being used. Maybe they fell like that would be admitting there was a problem they have been denying for years.
I have an 05 neon ran like doo. Did the cylinder heads, now it's my favorite car. I got to do smaller parts like timing belt and idlers at the same time, for free
Isn't that actually made/built by Mitsubishi?
149,000 on a Dodge, lucky owner. If it was a Toyota, Honda, lexus, it would just be broke in.
Less than 5% have cam issues at over 150k miles on engines that show signs of neglect. But, if it wasn't for scotty's exaggerations he wouldn't be so entertaining to watch.
Well done. The logic of running rich or lean and the computer compensation was well explained.
I have the same problem with my wife’s 2015 jeep wrangler 300,000 km s on it so I’m not complaining but still not a fan of Dodge or anything made in North America. Every person doesn’t care about quality of their work because they aren’t buying it or living there. Japan has the best quality because they care
The thing with Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/RAM is that they've done great cosmetic design work on many/most of their vehicles - so they LOOK great. The (2) Dodges I've owned (both V6), the core engine/powerplants have been nearly bullet-proof. It's the secondary component (power steering/steering racks/disc brake rotors/interior switch controllers etc.) failures/malfunctions that drive me crazy. We replaced one interior switch/"multi-controller" FIVE times under warranty...no kidding.
If guys that do have these trucks, I would highly recommend adding oil additives like Protecta engine oil booster, it well help keep the lifters and cam lubricated.
I live in the south everyone drives trucks even though the biggest thing they ever carried was there wife and a broken weed eater

To be fair, I've seen some very big wives.
I live in the South, and a lot of them wives are pretty big!

See it's overloaded with the weed eater
What most people don't realize is that most brand conveniental oil breaks down really fast ! Synthetic, or synthetic blend doesn't break down so fast, plus the devolacty lasts longer !
Love his frankness .. appreciate his knowledge
Another example of why changing the oil a lot more often than suggested in the goofy owners manual. use 5W-20 and accept a a half mile a tank less fuel mileage but potentially save your engine.
Probably the work of ram's active fuel management system. That could be 1 of the cylinders that deactivates.
I have heard that this is an issue with early 4th gen Rams, which this one is. They had that ironed out pretty good towards the end of 4th gen.
That's why I don't want vehicles with the active fuel management system, which became common after 2013. It it doesn't work perfect, premature wear will occur.
The epa forced dodge to do this. They either came up with a solution or wave goodbye to an excellent engine.
There are entire kits to fix this problem when bought new.
It's a great engine when you buy it knowing what your getting and immediately put the money where it needs to be.

Why not run royal purple with synerlec , or Castrols syntec with the bonding agent, both oils say they bond to moving parts, cams included. That should help The problem.
The oil should have been changed to synthetic in the early miles. But in most cases its the exhaust manifold bolt that breaks and I bet most dealers tell the customer that it's the cam and lifter problem to make some big money.

scotty thats crazy to say replace the bearings and pistons because there no need for that as long as the bearings still look good then your fine because i replace the cam...lifters...timing chain....oil pump on my 392 and 3 yrs later still running good with no noise
I once had a 1976 Ford Pinto. I pushed it more than I drove it.
Did yours have the 2.3 L with the overhead cam? My dad had a 1974 Pinto wagon & the camshaft lobes actually wore round! Then he got a 1978 Fairmont wagon with same engine, much too big a car to have that small an engine & the same thing went wrong with that. So in 1980 my parents bought a Buick LeSabre coupe with a 3.8 L & I AM STILL DRIVING IT! LOL problem solved. 🤣👍

@@alanmorris1828Ah, yes, the Buick 3800! One of the most reliable engines ever.
I've worked on car motors for over 50 years this guy knows what he's talking about
I love your videos.
I'm a retired nurse who relocated from California to Ohio.
I had the same mechanic for twenty years.
My Toyota 4runner is a 2008 and never gives me trouble.
I replaced the battery and tires.
I have no mechanic here in ohio and wondered if you know any trustworthy shops in or near Warren or Youngstown.
Love your videos.
I bought a longhorn with 70k. At 89k it started ticking, you guessed it lifter seized and was grinding cam. 4800 bucks. Both heated mirrors burned out. Each each side was like 300 bucks , I left them. Then the back seat broke and would not lift to access storage. Long story short sold the ram, sold the durango, sold the challenger srt. Never buy that junk ever again. Bought a tundra, lexus gx 460 and haven't had anymore problems
Odd that my 09 Ram that gets 20 minute warmups in the winter has now accumulated 248, 000 miles and runs perfectly , original cam, original lifters
I had a 2009 Ram also. Had 87,000 miles on it. Ran good but body was rotting out. Kept braking exhaust manifold bolts. Traded in in on a 2018 Toyota Tundra. Never go back to Ram.
@@astroboy5137you “Dodged” a big bullet 😂 people stray away from the Tundra because they want bigger fancier interiors and bells/whistles which is a very fatal mistake. The Tundra isn’t super fancy because Toyota spent all their money where it matters….. the engine and tranny. Any newer Tundra with the 5.7L V8 still in it, is literally bulletproof. F gas mileage, people want good mileage go buy a Prius. 😂 You buy the 5.7L V8 Tundra and pay more for gas because it does NOT TURN OFF cylinders. The engine. Runs. For.EVER. You’re a very smart man.
@astroboy5137 I've kept up on the rust prevention so even the body and interior are in great shape- having a garage to park in helps too!
@@johngault3973 nobody does that anymore man. Nobody. It’s sad. I keep those new “dust” towels in my 2014 Ridgeline because I don’t wanna see DUST 😆 I mean if people truly took care of their trucks they would last absolutely FOREVER. “I’m gonna drive that Tundra until God takes it, or me first. One or the other” lol. That’s my mindset. Ridgeline is my first truck, but someday I dream of a Tundra. People just beat the hell out of stuff now days.
I think 09 was the last year of that motor. I believe that is when Daimler sold and fiat or ram whoever redesigned the motor for more h.p.
Changing a camshaft, lufters and timing chain does not require rebuilding the entire engine.
@ 9:13 When Scotty says "if you can find somebody in a junk yard" while showing a picture of a Chevy dealership, LOL classic.
As a Junkyard owner, I agree with this. The problem extends to other early 2000s Dodge engines. I had a lot of Ram trucks come in with 150k or fewer miles and the engine was trash.
I love it every time Scotty uploads a new video.
Leave it to Chrysler to revive the ICONIC HEMI and then ruin it with a bad design change....
My 98 Dodge Ram 1500 is the best truck I've owned. Almost 250k. Just change oil and regular maintenance.
Why can't you just replace the worn cam/lifters if the rest of the engine is fine?
You can if it's early enough. But many folks ignore it until it grinds metal shavings all through the motor.
As I have owned an driven lots them you can idle them the problem is the oil changes this is from the dealer. if you idle a lot (which most fleet trucks do which is where I have driven them in ) you MUST do oil changes by hours not miles do to oil break down an loss of lubricant property’s. had it happened once an now all oil changes by hours never been problems with trucks we have 2015 ram 198,400 2015 ram 170,500 2016 ram 174,890 2017 ram 168,356 2019 ram 74,862 all hemis an still out running everyday no problems the trucks got hour meters built in use them for oil changes
“Corporate needs you to find the difference between this picture and this picture:”
*Junkyard and Chevy Dealership
Scotty: It’s the same picture
I can agree on that. I’m a big Ford guy, but don’t have a problem with giving respect where it is due. It was good on GM’s part perfecting an engine instead of constantly jumping into a new, often finicky design like ford did in the late 90’s and 00’s
I have a 2014 Ram 2500 with 5.7 Hemi. I always use an oil treatment additive that contains Zinc when changing oil every 3000 miles. 175K and no issues at all. You want engine problems then go buy a F 150 with a Ecoboost.
Pro tip, don’t buy a vehicle that Scotty recommends that you shut it off while you wait for a train to pass.
😂
Acknowledging the cam wiping problem exists, family has had 3 Hemi 1500 Rams for work with over 750,000 miles combined, with no significant engine or transmission issues. The only problem was exhaust manifold gaskets, which is an annoyance. These trucks were run with synthetic and beat on pretty hard. Idled for hours while the dog sleeps in the truck, etc.
At 0:34 he says the older hemis with less power better. So what generation or year did they raise the cam?
Weird, we cam swap all the time - not an engine rebuild. Yeah, you have to worry about shavings. Drop the oil pan, clean it out, put a magnet or two in it and call it a day.
Of course, the thing to do is a) synthetic oils only. b) change the oil on YOUR schedule , not the computer's.
Built Fiat Ram tough, junk.
Scotty is 100% correct. DO NOT IDLE RAM TRUCKS! My 2012 5.7 had high idle hours early in its life and the cam and lifters failed at 140k. It only made it that long because it became a commuter at 80k miles. After rebuild it has made it to 200k without a single issue and i still daily it, but i never let it idle.
funny, that looks like a 4.7 engine,, NOT a Hemi..and yes the 4.7 had a few issues.
I noticed that too. That engine is not a Hemi engine. It's a Magnum engine.
@@bernie472 I thought Magnums were discontinued around '08, this is an '11, 4th gen Ram. The Magnum wasn't an option when I bought my 4th gen.
The 4.7 was manufactured until April 2018.
@@gdaddy7351 No, 2013, just looked it up. Not sure it was used in Rams in the later years though. I think just Jeeps and a few of their cars.
@@mplslawnguy3389 My 2012 RAM 1500 had 4.7 engine . I sold it to a friend with 250k miles,still runs great.
I have 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan. ... made when Mercedes had a piece of Dodge... only about 160,000 miles on it, but almost all short haul city driving, which is rough on a car. All in Miami, hot as blazes, AC all the time. Basically bulletproof with regular oil changes. Sorry other Dodge products not cutting it!
Running an oil like Amsoil or Royal Purple in the Hemi when there is reduced lubrication will save lots of headaches!! Walmart brand oil or other cheap oils is 1 reason they have issues
2012 4.7 owner here.....And mine cackles when it's cold, once it warms up, it stops. I know the struggle. Less than 100K on the odometer. Going to do cams, bearings, lifters, rockers, and timing chain when I get the down time.
Surprise, it’s a Dodge. Let me contain my shock. 🤣
I have a 16yr old Chrysler mini van with 97,000. How could I find a local reliable mechanic to check it out so I could travel in it? I am in Irving, TX and am 71 yrs old and don't want to "side of the road it". Thanks, you are the greatest on the net.
I never new Bram Stokers Dracula had opinions on trucks.

Scotty for President. Whenever I start feeling optimistic about the world I watch a Scotty video and it resets my expectations !
I had a 2003 dodge dakota. It made 405,000 km before getting smashed in an accident. Turning left into the driveway, some bimbo tried to double yellow pass and took off the front of ths truck. It got towed and repaired i still see it driving around.
No compensation for injuries, i limped around at work for the better part of a year.
I have my 2015 Ram 1500 for 8 yrs 170k miles and no major problems. Not sure if earlier years had more problems or not
But can that engine be fixed? I mean that’s a genuine design flaw not just a manufacturing defect or shoddy workmanship. At some point it’s gonna fail all over again am I correct?
It's an inherent flaw, especially with early 4th gen Rams. I would look for a Hemi from a '16 or '17. Supposedly they are a little better.
You are correct. 😌👍
@@alanmorris1828thanks. I mean unless you modify the oil system so it lubricates the camshaft. You’ve really solve nothing except replace bad parts.
I think you’ve glossed over the entire issue, pull the cam and lifters out, and you may find the source of the misfire…. This has already been covered thousands of times over and over with these engines.
The whole vid is literally about this exact issue.
Did you not watch it?
Or do you struggle with basic comprehension?
Cylinder deactivation.
The newer Chrysler Hemi engines use a system called MDS, which, just like the GM AFM (Active Fuel Management) is a complicated cylinder deactivation system. Both these engines can be rebuilt without these systems, using normal engine parts, which solves most of their problems. If you have a nice vehicle with one of these engines, it may very well be worthwhile to either rebuild the engine or get a rebuilt engine that does not have one of these systems. "Modern" technology has made pretty much all newer engines JUNK. The carbureted 390 in my 1968 Ford F-250 is closing in on 400,000 miles, with no internal problems.
I got a new dodge work truck , check engine light already on !
Never owned a Dodge....no plans to.
Unfortunately, just about every modern "Assembled in America" vehicle (parts come from all over the world) are complete junk! The standard power train warranty used to be 100,000/5 years. Every one of the big 3 brands dropped that warranty time almost in half. They are going up on price and down on quality.
My mother’s hemi challenger, went in 3 times for the same fuel injector.
I have a dodge ram 1500 at nearly 250k now, thing hasn't had an issue so far. Actually, major engine work is the only thing I've never had to worry about.
I've rebuilt the front end twice, though.
The only way to keep your dodge from killing its self. Don’t start or use it.
LOL
