I bought a 2022 Maverick hybrid XL. It just recently broke 20,000 miles. Granted, that’s not a whole lot of miles, but I absolutely love that thing. I live in a small town so it can be a challenge to really get up to 40 mpg with all of the highway driving I do so I wind up putting it in sport mode so it doesn’t kill the engine randomly when I’m on the highway. It helps preserve the engine, at least, as long as conventional wisdom still applies. Anyway, 35 mpg still isn’t hard to do and, when you consider everything I get out of it, that’s $23,000 well spent.

Fascinating stuff…there’s no doubt some engines are poorly/cheaply designed and built, but it’s obvious that many of the engines have been abused and or badly maintained. Judging by the sludge he finds in these engines, it’s obvious the owners haven’t taken your oil change philosophy to heart! Love your stuff…Happy New Year, all the best in 2024.

Thanks for your expert comments, I was just about ready to flush the automatic transmission in my 2006 Hiundy with 130 k miles, it shifts very well, has no leeks, it looks clean and the car is in general good condition. If I flush the transmission I more than likely will ruin it. I'm a DYS guy a decent mechanic and usually can fix most anything, a hard core hot -roder from the 1960's. I know that cars nowdays are very different with all the coputer systems that now are installed in them. I know they now are more reliable and all that crap, BUT I like and know the simplicity of old engines. Thanks again for the good tips that make sense .

Maybe they did, but, geez, we bought two REALLY nice pre-owned 6 yr old Lexus SUVs this year for less than they paid for their one brand new RAV4!! Plenty of life left in them and they will serve us just as well as that huge depreciation machine she was driving.

I agree! Never, ever FLUSH an automatic transmission. I always drain & fill the ATF in my vehicles @ 30K mile intervals and - if possible - replace the filter. However, the only time I replace a filter is when I buy a used car and I always drain & fill the ATF twice, just to be sure. Cheap insurance.
So far, this procedure has worked for me, for the last 63 years of owning and maintaining my own cars.
For manual transmissions, I also drain & fill @ 30K mile intervals.
In all cases, I use premium full synthetic fluids.

So for the tech who wants access to everything for their car, and couldn't give a crap about the rest, this is a great option. Or, they have bundles for the professional who wants it all in 1. One of the main reasons most die hard car collectors purchase and maintain older and antique cars is to not only enjoy driving them, but to preserve a little slice of history.
If no one cared about preserving history all of these old cars would be gone.
Cars from the 1920's and earlier had a lot of hand made components and the craftsmanship is amazing.
My antique cars a like time machines for me. Driving one takes me back to the time when these cars were driven daily and to a time when you actually had to pay attention and 'drive' your car, not just point it in a direction and let the car do all the work.
I am merely this generation's caretaker and when my time is up on this planet, I hope to find someone to pass these rolling works of art onto someone that will appreciate them as much as I do.

It got lowered and painted about 6 sears ago.
It got arround 360,000 km on it but else its looking fine.
Its 1250 € which is all the money i got.

  • @funfun5656

Me too Scotty. I got into cars wanting to go fast by using depreciation to my advantage. While used BMWs are good HP/$ the only way to drive them inexpensively is to rebuild them yourself when they break down. My daily driver is a Ram 1500 that I can use to tow my Bimmers home on the hauler whenever I break down driving them on the weekend lol.

Hey Scotty, what are your thoughts on a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria? I bought one a few years back with 166 thousand and some change with a rebuilt transmission. Outside of the amount of parts I've put into it I think it was an okay deal but wanted your opinion on the matter.

Your vids are great and I've learned a lot watching them over the years.
Your rant about EVs is 100% spot on, however these technologies need to start somewhere and trying to kill them in their infancy is not the way to see them through their growing pains to efficiency. Even now sodium ion batteries are in development that will make the waste of lithium ion battery manufacturing a thing of the past, but without the infrastructure created by the lithium battery industry, sodium ion batteries would never see the light of day. Almost all new tech is inefficient, but it's also almost always the first step to efficiency.

I've heard you should change the transmission fluid 3 times within a short period to get a full fluid change instead of a flush. Would it be worth changing it more regularly just to keep a higher quality of fluid?

A friend of mine owns a 2002 Silverado that he bought new. It now has 375,000 miles on the original engine & transmission.
He burns one quart of oil every 3,000 miles. The back part around the rear wheels rusted badly, so he bought a new bed and then had the whole truck repainted last year. It looks almost new!
I used to have a 2004 Silverado that had 140,000 miles when I sold it in 2017. She sttill ran strong.
The old 5.3L V8 engines were fantastic. The new ones have more horsepower, but the cylinder deactivation feature can be problematic.
If I had to buy a new truck, it would be a Toyota Tacoma or a Ford Ranger.
