- Boy has San Antonio changed! A lot of people say it's never going to be the same.
I spent three days in San Antonio to bring you an updated look at what life is like in the 7th biggest city in America. The Riverwalk, The Alamo, the neighborhoods - all of it.

Nick Big. Thanks another Great informative. Video Evry Time 👍👍👍👍
Nick, the Riverwalk used to be a naturally occurring tributary, fed by the waters of the SA River and San Pedro Creek. But the city has depleted the water levels so much those rivers don't flow until flooding rains are present. So they recycle that nasty water you saw in the Riverwalk area. They had proposals to build a desalination unit years ago, pulling water from the Gulf of Mexico. But they decided to build a new stadium for the SA Spurs instead with that money.

Did you get a chance to adventure around Hill Country outside Austin? Moved here last May and it's beautiful.
Why ? didnt you visit Alamo Secret, Basement. 🚲
Thanks for that honest account of San Antonio. We have lived here and many years (retired military) and have seen the ups and downs of this town. As for HEB...we love HEB not because of their products but how they support Texas and other states (and Mexico). When there is a disaster, HEB trucks full of food and supplies are quickly on the road headed out to help the people...no charge. When you go through a check-out at HEB, you will be greeted by a cashier who really means it when they ask "How you doin' today"? It's a family owned company. Texasans would not tolerate the Butt family putting it up for sale. That's why HEB is loved in Texas (by most of us).
I always enjoyed there buy so much get gas free deals those were to good old days
Same. Retired military and stayed in TX. I love HEB.
If you could purchase groceries at HEB and then sell them up North, you could easily fund a mini Texas vacation.
what are they going to do for living?
I love H-E-B!
When I moved here they told me to get a map and draw a letter V with the tip on the Alamo. They said everywhere inside the V is safe, outside the V is dangerous. 8 years later still living inside the V. 😂
San Antonio doesn’t seem like it’s declining as bad as other major US cities. Seems WAYY better run than Seattle, Philly, LA, Portland, Jackson, and San Francisco
Not yet, give it time. TX is turning purple from its red roots. Whether you want to believe it or not. Look at the example of the “other major US cities”.

I visited San Antonio this past summer, the down town area was great and it is a relatively chill urban area. The river walk, the alamo, the tower of the americas was cool. It is a nice slice of the american metropolis.
As someone who lives in San Antonio, I can say this is the sad yet honest truth of how this city is..
As someone who lives in California and is continually told how great Texas is, I appreciate your honesty. (California also has a ton of problems.)

I did live in California and personally see the decline in live there ..we move to San Antonio tx and my kids got better live and education is more culture here and at this point I do not mind the 100 degrees Plus I do Love San Antonio Tx and more so I love the State of Texas .

San Antonio left a sour taste in my mouth. I was disappointed that there was no basement in the Alamo. A fortune teller told me my stolen bicycle was there, but there was no basement.
Nice Pee Wee Herman reference 😂😂😂 May he rest in peace 🙏🏾
San Antonio is also considered as military city. It has a lot of retired cops, and retired military people . And a lot of government agents retired people.

People who live here don't go down town, ironically. It's just for tourist and business meetings. Maybe a few times a year, locals go down there for events or shows, but not really. Some younger people get duped to moving into apartments down town, paying expensive rent and never leaving their Apts also ironically.
Well that's true of a lot of major cities. They put in bars and little niche restaurants and entertainment and only the young and homeless hang out there. Throw in a bus station or homeless shelter nearby and you have all the components of crime just waiting to happen.
I only went downtown for work the entire time i lived there.
Downtown is usually to be avoided, due to parking, prices, and potential crime
I only go downtown for events like last month NIOSA. Other than that the court house or if needed. San Antonio is still a small town in a big city. Nice places are close to many residential areas. So there is no need to go downtown.
Fair assessment of San Antonio inside loop 410. But you missed outside Loop 410. The north side is roughly the same size as the west, east and Southside combined, if not bigger, because of the way development has occurred. Northside areas like Stone Oak, The Rim, Helotes, Alamo Ranch, Shavano Park, Hollywood Park, Bulverde, Boerne, etc… are very nice areas.
Thank you! It's difficult to believe he based San Antonio on downtown, the West side and Alamo Heights areas. Alamo Heights has some old money living there, but it's nowhere near the nicest neighborhood in SA.
Helotes n especially Alamo Ranch would be considered far west side not Northside. I-10 is where da norf starts
I am a transplant to San Antonio, Texas and I love it here.
San Antonio is like any other city I have been to and I have been to many. All cities have a good and a bad side of town.
Most of the people here are very friendly.
I have lived here over 40 years now.
It also has miserable weather. We had over 70 days of 100+ temperatures this summer!
💯
It is miserable. The weather is a big downside of living here.

I live in the northeast side right now. There definitely is a homeless problem. They probably cleared them away from the Riverwalk because of the tourists. The last time I was there at night, I almost ran into a homeless guy taking a dump beside the river. I've been here 5 years and can't wait to get back to the midwest.
The dog situation really drives me crazy. A lot of people just let their dogs run around and there's a lot of strays. The shelters are overfull.
They get on my nerves here, with the damn stray dogs!!! It's unacceptable, can't even take a walk without worrying about stray dogs!!

Funny how they all have cell phones and nobody looks like they've ever missed a single meal or worked too hard.
Exactly
The good old American tax payer is the worlds Santa Claus .
I've just come back from a non-touristy trip through Central America. Many (even most) places are desperately poor, but the people live simply, are generally friendly (by US standards) and try to do the best with what they have. I did not see anyone who did not eat (most eat 5X a day) or did not have a cell phone although they did not have the latest and greatest. The family I stayed with lives on about $350/mth with 9 people in the house.
Yep it is surly not what we used to see in even illegal immigrants. They would come through our ranch in tattered clothes , hungry and willing to even do a little job in trade of food .. now they are here with better phones than I have , wearing much nicer clothes than I can afford and get medical treatment and insurance to boot , free trips across the country to where ever they want to go . Wish the Gove would pay for me to go see the northern part of this country , I have never afforded to even get out of the Great state of Texas , which doesn't bother me too much , Texas has all I ever dreamed of seeing anyway
Almost everybody in the world have a cell phone nowadays
I lived in San Antonio when I was in Air force basic training in 2017 at Lackland. San Antonio was nice a few years ago, but really Texas as a whole has changed a lot since 2017, it's sad to see how much Texas is turning Into California which was my home state. Both states are not what they were decades ago.
I agree 100%! The Democratic Party are working hard to destroy every city in America.
I lived there in 1968-1971, when my Dad was assigned to Fort Sam Houston. Fond memories of SA of the era, but I know better than to try to visit. That San Antonio is long gone. Sad to see it like this, and it’s going to get nothing but worse.
In 1967, I was at Lackland AFB for basic training and tech schools. We were warned not to go along the river walk due to the high crime. @@brinsonharris9816

I was stationed in San Antonio while in the Air Force, way back in the late 1980s. Since then, I've been back several times. It's a unique, colorful, and generally friendly city. The north side is definitely better than the south side, but both have things to see. A few highlights not mentioned here: the old Mission Trail, King William (a neighborhood of stately Victorian homes just south of downtown), and the Institute of Texan Cultures. And be sure to go up in the Tower.
I was station there 2001-2002. I'm not a fan of big cities, but for one that size, it's pretty nice. Even the bad parts of San Antonio didn't seem THAT bad. Of course I grew up near Philadelphia, so that hellscape has damaged my sense of "normal." I wouldn't be upset if I had to move back, although I'd pick New Braunfels as my top choice for the area.

The great thing about HEB for us regular folks is the price of everyday groceries. Overall, they are cheaper than Walmart. I can eat well even on my tiny budget and not have to rely on local food pantries. If you are moving to Texas it is a huge bonus to have one in your neighborhood.
These migrants don’t understand that it’s over. They’re a decade too late. The economy has no more room, and the cost of living is too high. They’d need a high wage job out the gate and that’s not possible.
Thanks. That is the way I see it all over. If they want work, we don't have any. 😢😊😊

Hey Nick, I talked to you about Nebraska awhile back. I now live here in San Antonio and foster dogs. The stray population is god awful. It is not rare to see dead dogs on the side of the road (or cats). Since a good portion of the people here are low income they don't spay/neuter because it is costly. Also, some will try and breed dogs for extra cash and when the pups don't sell they dump them. My rescue has rescued so many boxes of puppies just sitting abandoned (on top of adult dogs as well). Dog fighting is a big underground thing here as well. It is extremely sad. About the ghettos, I will say the west side isn't ghetto but San Antonio CAN NOT keep up with the copious amounts of people moving in. The construction is never ending.
I worked for SAWS for 10 years. I always kept dog treats in my truck because of all the homeless pets. San Antonio is full of irresponsible pet owners.
That is nice of you. People find dogs all the time here so having food on you is nice when you happen upon a stray. I saw a dead dog on the side of the road yesterday and another the week before. It is awful here. ACS intakes hundreds of dogs/cats every single day. They get 3 days until they are euthanized. And every dog I get from my rescue is always in bad shape. Puppies are always full of worms. I am in a nice area, right outside the city limits even and we get strays around here.@@skiesofthesouthwest
That was the worst part about living in central TX for me... so many strays and so many dead on the roadside. I picked up one pup who I thought was dead on the shoulder of the road, but saw was alive just as I drove past. Thankfully, I was able to double-back and get her to a vet. Had her hip repaired and I got super lucky as the vet who performed the operation ended up adopting her. But yeah, so much more need than available resources and it's heartbreaking.

I remember being stationed in San Angelo and me and a buddy went to San Antonio (on an overnight bus, lol) and hitting the Riverwalk. We had such a good time, we brought a whole slew of people back to hang out there for the weekend. On a slightly comic note, I want into an Irish Pub there (I think it was called Dirty Nelly's), and there was an Irish bartender. We got to chatting and I let him know my mom was born and raised in Ireland and too many shots of Jamie later, I walked right outside and fell in the river. Broad daylight, so no excuses other than drunk.
I love Dirty Nelly’s so much fun
When you were stationed in San Angelo did you ever go to Brady?
I've done a fair bit of traveling. The river walk is really cool. You should check out the Japanese garden in San Antonio. It's old and pretty interesting
I got a good laugh over Mappy's comment that, "It looks like Mexico has taken Texas back. They never really lost. Just a temporary defeat." That was extremely good humor there. I just drove from east of Houston to San Antonio on Interstate 10 and the traffic around Houston was just like Los Angeles. There are big open spaces of countryside between Houston and San Antonio that are really nice, ranch land I guess, but when I got near San Antonio the quality of the freeways, highways and roads is really bad with potholes everywhere, warped asphalt, and lane lines so faded that I couldn't see them. I would hate driving in Texas on a regular basis. I saw they're adding lanes on I-10 in places, but their roads need serious work.
Tex dot has literally wasted billions on frills since the beginning of the Rick Perry regime.
I lived in SA for two years before coming back to North Carolina Both moves were for work i'm a field engineer for a major telecom company and i got to see all of SA. Homeless are everywhere with different camps all over the city. Many times in our cell sites. Even had one group get into a shelter by breaking the door lock. They set up a little couch a tv and various other things in there. We only found out when they broke a Backhaul fiber and the site went down. I visited the site saw they were there and spoke with them. After i had replaced the fiber and got the site back up i told them i wasn't going to call the cops just asked them to please give the rack with our equipment a wide berth. I made it clear that if thy took the site down again i would come back with the police. Sure enough a few weeks later they broke the same fiber, Had to go back with a coworker and SAPD and get them cleared out. Shortly after the equipment in the shelter was relocated to the outside compound and the shelter was demolished. I felt bad for having to get them out of there but you can't have sites being taken off air like that.

I'm in Austin now but kinda wish I was still an 09er
I really don't like telling people at work where I live anymore. You tell 'em you live in a shelter or a condo either way they'll look at you differently. I'm there to work, not discuss my socioeconomic status.
Nick, San Antonio area is DEFINITELY chill. Maybe it's the food. But the growth has me craving small town living again.
The neighborhoods outside the 1604 from the northwest like Helotes then wrap around all the way to the northeast about to La Vernia. La Vernia is a really nice area, Borne, Stone Oak, La cantera area, and Shavano park is inside the 1604 and nice, Castle hills , Hollywood Park too
Exactly- he missed all of what is outside 410 and even more so, outside 1604.
@@SarahSmilez8100 I wont say exactly where I live but I live down off of I-35 about 10 or 15 miles out of town and some areas are kind of good, not so much, and indifferent but you know what it's really cheap and affordable and people are friendly you just got to drive farther. It seems like it's how people have their houses made and set up that determines their situation you can tell where a poor person lives and you can tell where a person that has more money, it is like that. I'm disabled and older so it suits me well. I got a nice yard a good air conditioner and a good heater lots of space and that's all kids and grandkids come over once in awhile and I drive into San Antonio to visit them once in a while also. And they also live in a really nice neighborhood that's right outside the 410 it's one of the best neighborhoods a person could live in.
@@SarahSmilez8100Olmos park is a decent area near 410.
Lmao those areas suck they’re always breaking into shit around that area, San Antonio sux 🤢
Thank you for your journalism!
You portrayed the city very accurately. I may even say, you were a little too kind. But glad you came to my hometown.
I always enjoy visiting different parts of the country you take us too. I love it!😻 since I am not able to travel at this time, thank you for all you do. Wonderful job!😊
Ok Mary ❤️
I stayed downtown just a two years ago in a moderate Price hotel, and walked around looking at the sites before I visited with relatives. There was somewhat a lot of crazies as in mentally ill, people and homeless walking around, I don’t think as many as in California but at least I felt somewhat safe because there was a good police presence around.
The one man I saw that was mentally ill or whatever his problem was he was shouting profanity at the police for no reason, and then, as he turned to me, I cross the street hopefully to stay out of his way.
Now I am for helping the mentally ill and the homeless, but they have to want to except help.
i would have never thought in all my life that San Antonio looks like that I work there years back but I was staying not to for from the Riverwalk. I am very surprised. Thank You for showing the Truth.
As a New Braunfels High School graduate from the class 0f '73, I can honestly say it was a fun place to be. Especially if you liked floating down the river with a keg of something cold and your mexican herbal product in a Tupperware container keep it dry. Willie Nelson had his 4th of July gig up near canyon Lake.
Your ability to walk the line between sarcasm, satire and realism is pretty awesome. Love the videos! Informative AND entertaining! Thank you for producing them.
I really enjoyed this video. It's nice there are still some okay places left. Life doesn't seem to be getting any easier though.😊❤
A+ video!
Fantastic overview of the city!
Yay!
I live in Transylvania, Eastern Europe I make 13k a year from two jobs, our city has 120k inhabitants (Tirgu Mures/Marosvásárhely/Neumarkt am Miresch), no homeless, no drug addicts, no migrants, no crap on the streets, people minding their own business, you can go for a walk in the middle of the night, no one gives a damn. There are three small parts of the city where it's not advised to stroll around, in two of them there is a chance of you being mugged, and in one of them, there is a chance to meet bears on the streets. We own a 3 bedroom apartment, have a car from 2014. I have two children under the age of 6, wife is a teacher makes around 15k a year. Wouldn't move anywhere not even if they'd triple our income. I love your videos, keep up the good work, mate!
Illegal immigration is bad there. They don't spay and neuter their pets so it's heart breaking to see all the strays in bad shape. It's a sad town. Don't forget to go to San Jacinto. You have to check out where the final battle of Texas independence took shape.
In Montana, if an intact male dog gets loose more than once, animal control neuters it at the owner's expense.
@@darylwatsonfool. He means they get pets here in the United States and then they don’t spay or neuter them.
I heard Houston is dog hell and the problem has expanded to Dallas.
@@tedmerrI don't think these people will license or microchip dogs and cats
@@darylwatsonNo, the illegals get free pets from people (when here) and then do not spay or neuter them. Their pets are allowed to wander, breed, and reproduce. This makes for a horrific situation for strays. It’s very sad!
i dont think they are mexican, they look like they are from south or central america
they're Venezuelans
Very enjoyable video Nick, just as always, can't wait to see tha Dallas review, never been in the US before but maybe looking forward to move to Dallas some day, greetings, i never miss a vid!
Watching Nick's Videos is fascinating. Gives an idea about the status in USA. I am from South Asia. We revered USA as a haven. Thanks to Nick I learned to appreciate my own country.
We visited San Antonio a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. Walked around at night and never really felt unsafe. But we are from St Louis so maybe that had something to do with it. Austin was filthy, we didn't like that at all. Dripping Springs was really nice. Would definitely recommend that. But overall we really enjoyed San Antonio and would go back. Might be different now though, with the border issue.
I knew that you would "Remember the Alamo" in your video about San Antonio. Ironically, I have shopped in the HEB store that was in your filming in. Yes, I have seen much of the social problems in Texas because as a trucker I am restricted from the downtown areas or wealthy parts of town.
About what you said about San Bernardino, it sure would have been cool to have it's verdion of the "River Walk" and completely bulldozed Baseline and D Streets away!!
Keep up the great work Mr. Johnson!!
MAPPY RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you remember that plan to lake all of downtown away?
@@NickJohnson > LAKE all of downtown? That sounds cool to me. Literally! It gets Hot in the inland Empire.🔥☀️🌖🚉
Maybe they could have made a wakeboard tow line, or some fishing holes.🛶🐟
Great vid again, Kudos
I was in San antonio texas for a month and a half in the brutal hot summer. Shades are a must to see the roads
I must say the local drivers were polite, but the highways were Nascar racing driving 🚗
I live in San Antonio and the nice areas are all on the north side and north of both loops (410 and 1604). And yes, those areas are still in The city limits of San Antonio. If you go west (northwest) on I-10, or north on US 281, you’ll see the nicest areas in the entire metro. But you’re right, pretty much everything inside the 410 is GHETTO, other than the riverwalk and Alamo Heights.
You forgot Terrel Hills, Castle Hills, and the others. I live North 281. But, you are right. Just a week ago I learned they are making the Tower of Life Building into apartments to try and get downtown better. I hope they do.
Thanks Nick.. God Bless -from Ireland !!
Thanks again Nick for the insight. Very different from where I live. (Canberra , Australia) thanks for keeping it real. Stay safe and stay Gorgeous! ♥️👍🌺🍺
I love the river walk!!!
I lived in San Antonio for over 25yr. I moved away over a decade ago as the crime was just getting out of control even back then. I hear it's much worse now with the whole border issue and every summer they find a truckload of dead illegals cooking in the summer heat. I eventually had to leave Texas all together. Heartbreaking. 😢
GREAT JOB NICK
Just wanna say absolutely love your vids great to listen to when driving or even sitting having a meal.
Ok Jack! ❤️
Terrell Hills is tip top. Anyone would be plenty happy to live there if they could afford it. Also, you're seeing what you saw in Houston, where areas you would think are City of Houston are legally separate. Texas cities are still pretty well segregated in terms of wealth. Back in the day, the snobs in SA didn't want to move to Shavano Park (my grandfather included) and insisted on being an 09-er as in the zip code 78209. Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, King William, Monte Vista, Oak Park, Oakwell Farms, and Olmos Park are all inside the Loop and in some cases the houses are stunning. Olmos Park would be my choice, although Country Lane in Oak Park is pretty nice. Outside the Loop, barely, I would suggest from Castle Hills to Shavano Park, including Whispering Oaks which has some beautiful homes at compelling prices. Re: tourism, a lot of the dollars go to places like Sea World and Six Flags, which is to say family tourism.
When I lived in Texas I went to the San Antonio River Walk once and totally forgot all about until seeing this just now. I went there 7 years ago. What does that tell you.
Spot on. Riverwalk is always fun. Be great to hear from someone who lived their during the world fair construction.
Nick :
Tks., much appreciative.
San Antonio is a wonderful city! Its the best “Big”city in Texas! I will go there but I wont go to Austin.
Texas is safe. Only areas that aren't safe are lowest income areas. And pretty much only at night.
The bad areas are known by homes that have bars on the windows.
No bars? No problem.
If New Braunfels is so well off why are the roads in such horrible condition?
Built fast for real cheap. It's a Texas tradition in boom towns.
Went to San Antonio for my medical corps basic training in 1974, never made it to the Alamo or downtown. After watching your video, another great one, no need to go back, even if invited by ritzy friends!
I was in San Antonio and New Braunfels for Wurstfest last year. Really cool town! Gruene was cool too
