Nick, the Riverwalk used to be a naturally occurring tributary, fed by the waters of the SA River and San Pedro Creek. But the city has depleted the water levels so much those rivers don't flow until flooding rains are present. So they recycle that nasty water you saw in the Riverwalk area. They had proposals to build a desalination unit years ago, pulling water from the Gulf of Mexico. But they decided to build a new stadium for the SA Spurs instead with that money.

People who live here don't go down town, ironically. It's just for tourist and business meetings. Maybe a few times a year, locals go down there for events or shows, but not really. Some younger people get duped to moving into apartments down town, paying expensive rent and never leaving their Apts also ironically.

Well that's true of a lot of major cities. They put in bars and little niche restaurants and entertainment and only the young and homeless hang out there. Throw in a bus station or homeless shelter nearby and you have all the components of crime just waiting to happen.

I only go downtown for events like last month NIOSA. Other than that the court house or if needed. San Antonio is still a small town in a big city. Nice places are close to many residential areas. So there is no need to go downtown.

I remember going downtown with my friends in my late teens and early twenties. It's not the same downtown anymore. It's dead past five and it's mostly homeless people now. I only went a few months ago to eat at a restaurant on the Riverwalk for a friend's birthday party. 😊

Thanks for that honest account of San Antonio. We have lived here and many years (retired military) and have seen the ups and downs of this town. As for HEB...we love HEB not because of their products but how they support Texas and other states (and Mexico). When there is a disaster, HEB trucks full of food and supplies are quickly on the road headed out to help the people...no charge. When you go through a check-out at HEB, you will be greeted by a cashier who really means it when they ask "How you doin' today"? It's a family owned company. Texasans would not tolerate the Butt family putting it up for sale. That's why HEB is loved in Texas (by most of us).

Fair assessment of San Antonio inside loop 410. But you missed outside Loop 410. The north side is roughly the same size as the west, east and Southside combined, if not bigger, because of the way development has occurred. Northside areas like Stone Oak, The Rim, Helotes, Alamo Ranch, Shavano Park, Hollywood Park, Bulverde, Boerne, etc… are very nice areas.

We are way outside 1604 in Helotes/Alamo Ranch area and it’s absolutely beautiful here. I’ve never seen the parts of San Antonio he showcased here (besides the river walk). San Antonio is “HUGE” and to say San Antonio is run down, it’s just like any other city. There are bad areas and there’s definitely very “more” beautiful areas. My Buddy moved to Texas and invited me down to visit.

The different foods available are amazing.
And my goodness that place is HUGE!!!
My friend and I went for an eveneng cruise and I swear we were in the city limits for about 45 minutes.
    And the weather!!

The north side is definitely better than the south side, but both have things to see. A few highlights not mentioned here: the old Mission Trail, King William (a neighborhood of stately Victorian homes just south of downtown), and the Institute of Texan Cultures. Hey Nick, I talked to you about Nebraska awhile back. I now live here in San Antonio and foster dogs. The stray population is god awful. It is not rare to see dead dogs on the side of the road (or cats). Since a good portion of the people here are low income they don't spay/neuter because it is costly. Also, some will try and breed dogs for extra cash and when the pups don't sell they dump them. My rescue has rescued so many boxes of puppies just sitting abandoned (on top of adult dogs as well). Dog fighting is a big underground thing here as well. It is extremely sad. About the ghettos, I will say the west side isn't ghetto but San Antonio CAN NOT keep up with the copious amounts of people moving in. The construction is never ending.

I lived in SA for two years before coming back to North Carolina Both moves were for work i'm a field engineer for a major telecom company and i got to see all of SA. Homeless are everywhere with different camps all over the city. Many times in our cell sites. Even had one group get into a shelter by breaking the door lock. They set up a little couch a tv and various other things in there. We only found out when they broke a Backhaul fiber and the site went down. I visited the site saw they were there and spoke with them. After i had replaced the fiber and got the site back up i told them i wasn't going to call the cops just asked them to please give the rack with our equipment a wide berth. I made it clear that if thy took the site down again i would come back with the police. Sure enough a few weeks later they broke the same fiber, Had to go back with a coworker and SAPD and get them cleared out. Shortly after the equipment in the shelter was relocated to the outside compound and the shelter was demolished. I felt bad for having to get them out of there but you can't have sites being taken off air like that.

If anyone who spend three days here in San Antonio and show you this is what SA is like, than you are most uninformed. I lived here 34 years and counting. I love everything about San Antonio. The city history dating back nearly 200 years and he show you the oldest part of the city that has homes over 50 years old and call it run down. Can you expect anything less. Homeless! Of course we do have homeless, just about every cities in the US, big and small have homeless and crime problem. We are only few hours from the Mexico border. Of course we have illegals. But our governor have place major emphasis on stopping them at the Texas border. Tell Senile Joe and Kalama to do their job, then we in Texas wouldn't be having this issue. FYI, Los Angeles, CA alone have more homeless population 80k than the entire state of TEXAS 27k. Crimes! How about Chicago, New York City, Baltimore, Philadephia, Oakland, SF, LA, Atlanta, all those cities have crimes 100 times worse than SA. SA homicide in 2023: 165. Shooting in Chicago July, 4th, 2024: 109 people shot, 19 dead in one weekend. As part of the top 10 largest cities in the US, NY, Chicago, and LA crime rates beatSA by many folds. Therefore, take your biased video and stuff it where it belong.

They attacked an elderly couple and tore the poor man apart I saw the video of the dog tearing this man apart it was horrific! The traffic is so bad. They are finding dead bodies out of the trails constantly! So from what rock did you come out of?! It’s really bad here. I really don’t think you know what’s going on? I worked out here and seen all this first hand. Migrants took over my apt complex in Balcones Heights I had to move. So please don’t say it’s a nice place. Recently they also had on the news that a Venezuelan gang took over an apt complex too. Mine was taken over by Middle East migrants. And the migrants are pouring in here the Democrats are seeing to that! They have not stopped them from coming here we have thousands of them here. We are overrun by them.

I was first introduced to the Riverwalk in the 1972 Steve McQueen movie The Getaway. I first went there in 1973 when I was an Army Medic student at Fort Sam Houston. As an Army medic I was assigned there multiple times until I retired from the Army in 1998. I continued to visit San Antonio for several years attending medical conferences. Now I live in Harlingen and stop for the night there anytime we are traveling. In 1973 San Antonio was a sleepy small city. Interstate 35 ran through town but there were none of the loops there are today. As recently as the 1990s there was empty ranch land between San Antonio and Austin. Now it seems to me that the drive between San Antonio and Austin is one continuous city. Really other than a single empty stretch north of Waco it is pretty much a continuous city from San Antonio to Dallas Fort Worth. We still visit San Antonio often but we hate driving there or driving north on I35. Lately when we are traveling we use State Highways to avoid the big cities.

They weren't even Mexican. They were from central or south America. Mexico is actually doing well. Many Americans are moving to Mexico because it's cheaper. Im looking into moving into Ensenada, Mexico. Its close to sourhern California, beach area. tourism, and the same climate as southern California.
