  • Today I tell you all about cholla wood in your aquarium! It's one of my favourite aquarium woods, and I love the peace of mind it gives me when I have shrimp in my tank! I talk about the appearance, where they come from, some benefits to primarily shrimp but other tropical fish can benefit as well, and a few things to consider before getting this wood for your tank.
    If you're surprised by the pronunciation of cholla wood, so was I! It's a good thing I go and see how things are pronounced officially before I film videos on them haha
    If you're interested in learning about some other popular natural aquarium additives, check out these other two videos I'm made in the past!

    FAQS:
    Q: How many fish tanks do I have?
    A: Two, but I'll often film my mom's tanks too so it looks like I have more.
    Q: Will I ever get a betta sorority/breed bettas?
    A: Nope and nope! Both require a lot of work, money, and time to perfect- neither of which I'm willing or able to provide!
    Q: How do you name your fish?
    A: Sometimes I'm inspired by a character in a show or movie, or someone in real life like a celebrity. More often than not, however, I literally just choose whatever pops into my head- its like names I love but would never name my future children for whatever reason haha

    Driving to Mojave today for camping. I always bring back rocks and cholla for my aquariums. That cactus is no joke though.

    How long should you boil them & I’ve also heard of people boiling the almond leaf’s…?

    • @BetterBetta
      @BetterBetta  11 місяців тому

      I personally boil for about 10 minutes! People do boil the almond leaves as well. This can release tannins if you don't want the leaves to release too much, but they also will take the boiled water and add just the tannin-filled water to the tank- which allows the benefits to be added to the tank without having visible leaf litter.

    Informative video. Will Plecostomus benefit from Cholla wood? I don’t like tannin staining and Plecos need to graze on wood. Thank you.

      Yes, they would benefit from it! Other options would also be spider wood, manzanita or caspian wood, as they are wood types that give off minimal tannins! While actual wood types are their favourite, they will still happily eat the cholla wood.

    What's the white slimy stuff on fresher pieces and is it bad

    • @BetterBetta
      @BetterBetta  Рік тому

      Nope! That’s just the wood breaking down a little bit, it’s not bad, but it can make your tank a bit messy if you don’t have fish or invertebrates that eat stuff like that!

    • @BetterBetta

      I thought so too! But then I watched a bunch of videos on the actual cacti specifically for that reason, and 98% of them pronounced it Choy-ya, so I went with majority rules! I think the odd site said it could be pronounced either way though.
