You've heard about Network Automation and Programmability, but where DO YOU START? I ask Hank Preston, NetDevOps Evangelist at Cisco, how we can go from CCNA/ ICND1 to Network Developer. Also, what is Intent-Based Networking and how is it different from Software-Defined Networking?

So far in my 20-year career I have been able to avoid coding and it is awesome. I have no experience in coding (other than in college for my bachelors and masters degrees) and dont plan to touch the stuff, I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT. When approached by upper management/stakeholders to do something that involves coding I tell them to hire a programmer or DBA to take care of it, and keep doing what they actually pay me to do. Sometimes staying in your own lane isnt a bad approach, and learning coding isnt always necessary.
I'm in Chuck. I've failed my CCNP SWITCH yesterday, but I'll get it next time.
Did u get it?
In 5 minutes, Preston created a roadmap on how to improve as a Network Engineer. Great quality, Chuck!
I appreciate the honesty. A lot of people sell IT careers as this never ending landscape of consistent challenge and change. While technology moves rapidly, your tasks at work usually remain consistent. That change isn't always relative to your position.
Great I started as a web developer but I really love to know how EVERYTHING works so I decided to get into devops and it's amazing how all the things I've learned combine whit this, and actually learning linux was one of the greatest decisions I've ever made
I accept the challenge. I am at the very beginning. Restarting a new career but have the path figured out. CCENT through CCIE with a focus on Security. Now add Python with a dash of Linux and I should have all the makings for a #NetworkUnicorn. But as we say in Texas, if you can dream it, you can do it. Keep inspiring people, Network Chuck!
I am also in the same path and in same state too.
Having a cup of coffee, and just signed up.
I am done with CCNP ROUTE, on with SWITCH and finishing CCNP with T-SHOOT.
Inbetween I am looking into the Cisco NetDev for this free course.
Exciting times!
This gives me more motivation to study something new! Hoping to complete my CCNA R&S by thus December and simultaneously learn this new thing! Thanks for keeping us updated #FutureNetworkUnicorn
Love it!
#FutureNetworkUnicorn this hashtag tho
Thanks for this. I have been going back and forth between networking and programming. Now I know to both.
I'm in! Finishing up my ICND2 in mid-November. Have an associates in Software Engineering and have been looking for a way to brush up on some OOP and dig into Python, so this should be perfect. Thanks for the inspiration Chuck!
Great stuff Chuck. I finished my CCNP R&S last year and I was looking to my next objective, I'm totally in!! Let's do it.
Totally agree with you pal, especially about diversifying our knowledge pool with programming , cloud computing docker and so on.
I'm in, thanks Chuck. Just finishing off my ccnp route exam which is booked, then on to the new journey with you guys!
The thing that is super exciting for me is I have already dreamt of learning dev and now it’s become a reality. Thanks for pumping me up even more than I already was!!!
Chuck, this is epic. Its so weird that this video came up because I literally just finished a module in my Networking degree to do with SDN, AI and automation etc. 3 weeks from finishing my 3 year degree whilst im studying CCENT atm. Super keen and super excited. Much love from south africa boiiiiii :D
My Man Chuck has made it! Sponsored by Cisco! Peak Performance
Thanks so much for this great interview it confirms that the route I want to take is a good one, alternating between learning programming and networking!
You motivate me alot brother
When I see you video I feel more to study network m same like you one of network lover ☺️☺️☺️
I wish for you be more successful man in your life 👍🏻
Alright Chuck, your enthusiasm got to me. I'm in, logged in and watching the videos. Thanks.
YES! Mission accomplished!
That's a great comeback with such a great topic!
Thank you, NetworkChuck. I needed this. I am going to take full advantage of this info.
I'm starting and taking my inspiration from you and others. I'm tackling CCNA, python, and Linux and more Linux. I'm going for hat and more but first the basics I need from all three.
Great motivation to start my path to a better understanding of automation!
I Loved the video, Chuck. I want to get to the same level as you are on!
Hi Chuck, I'm way into my CCNA journey and I can't say how happy I am that I'm not making the wrong decision studying python as soon as I'm done with my CCNA course. I will be taking the challenge and I hope to grow into a better Network Admin!
Hey,lm in Dallas and lm trn get a place to study CCNA can you help
This video just gave me a clear vision of a path i want to go! I am currently studying for computer engineering (my course is mainly focuses on software development) and i am simultaneously on a cisco academy getting my ccna r&s. It has always been a duality for me between programming and networking (because i love both areas). Now i see a possible and trustworthy road to follow where i can basically become that unicorn you always talk about! It's seems like merging the best of two worlds together and I'm very excited to get in network automation / sdn / ibn. Will definitely checkout the Cisco devnet! Than you Chuck for this amazing video! Good work and keep up
haha we're in the same boat my man. Currently attending for cs degree down the software path but also studying ccna r & s on the side!
Very motivating video, i'm got so hyped, and i'm up for the challenge!
Very nice information! Thank you Chuck!
Hey, way ahead of you :) I started Hank's course last week, I'm at lesson 7 on the basics and I'm trying to be consistent with it. Great stuff so far! Let's do this, go wild on programmability ! :)
I'm currently studying CCNP Routing & Switching. The change is pretty cool and extremely interesting! I wish I can have all the knowledge in both networking and programming.
Nice interview, it's on the list im working through. Interesting to hear that alot of cloud networks are not designed well. I guess it's the case of some legacy networks I've seen. They are put together in a rush, sorted out later and then the next thing comes which is put together in a rush.
I am taking the challenge, mate. Already finished two modules, and at the same time studying for CCNP Switch exam. Excited for both!
Truth in this line of work we will never stop learning "ever"
Really appreciate your and Preston’s thoughts on this kind of transition. I am a recent CCNA certified candidate and wanted to learn about adapting devops and IBN. Please do form a group as it might help individuals like me.
Thanks a lot. Much appreciated and much needed video indeed.
I felt outdated, and lost the sense of direction.
Being a “Physical Network Engineer” in a “Virtual” “Cloud” environment is a little bit frustrating. But thanks again for showing the path and guiding through.
I will start with Python & Docker.
All respect sir.
Yes! I love it!
This video absolutely cleared out doubts about learning programming or networking in my mind. It's one of the best videos I've watch in your channel.
Can't agree more
Hey chunks, thanks a lot.
I am gonna finish my CCNA by november then I really would like to learn this new thing.
I'm studying for CCNP Route I pushed it back to January though. I started a vlog on my journey so i remember it better. As soon as I'm finished with T-Shoot I'm going to try and learn Python.
i totally agree with Hank,..we should step back a little and see whats going on in this world ..
Great video Chuck.
I accept your challenge. Please let us know once you create a Facebook group where in everyone can share their knowledge and track the progress. That really helps Chuck !
Appreciate your efforts man :)
Almost finished my CCNA! planning on doing either devops or continue with a full study at school!
This is very inspirational. Thanks for the vid!
Thank you for giving Real time networking base information.....
Looking to start CCIE Sec from Feb next year and thought about doing AWS Solutions Architect and a basic F5 cert in my downtime but now you've got my attention with this vid since I've always knew eventually I'd have to learn Python at least so I checked out the Devnet site and saw this line on an Intro to Devnet module "Why Code?
I design and manage networks of all sizes. I use IEEE 802.1w, IPv4, IPv6, OSPF, and BGP to build communications networks that would make Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf proud. Why should I learn to code?" I thought wow this is me.....I'm in on this challenge!
Very interesting and like learning the new stuff. My background isn’t programming so I may be a little slow. Thanks for this awesome video and always look forward to your next one.
I'm in! Haven't committed to a path yet but this will help my dissuasion.
Hi NetworkChuck i wanted to thank you for your channel, I follow you since the beginning (since from STOP PROCRASTINATION) and you motivated me a lot to pass CISCO Exam and to improve myself.
Now I am Certified CCNA Routing & Switching and CCNA Security (got last week!!!!) in part Thanks to your advice, tips, motivation, enthusiasm and so on.
Never stop share, you are awesome!!!
Now, after this I go buy a course in Udemy and then practice coding on CodeAcademy, TreeHouse etc...
Thanks again from an Italian Tech working in Paris!!
Ciao
PS: Sorry for the bad English
WHOOOO!!! Congrats on CCNA RS and Security! That's awesome!
Man, glad I can help. So cool to hear your story. Keep us updated!
Now I know what to do.. Thanks for clearing the air
Currently studying for CCNA, I'm in!
Challege accepted! Awesome video Chuck!
I am in with regards to the Challenge. ^^ thank you for the information, really appreciated.
sometimes these types videos makes me confused, like by the time im going from good to great from ccna to ccnp, lets say it takes around a 1½ to 2yrs to become good n marketable in the industry as a good nwrk engineer from job perspective with good pay,
by next 2-3yrs majority of the things in network might have already got automated, while i would have been getting good on core networking concepts,
automation/programmability it is happening and it will be all over everywhere in next 2-3yrs man its sometimes very hard to keep up with learning n practicing new stuff n being able to b job ready for it while being on a job that u desperately want to leave for various reasons, dealing with personal family issues... still i take the challenge n ill get this 9hrs vids complete hopefully it opens up new perspective for us. thanks for presenting this video in such manner that it motivattes us to not give up n keep going n coping up with time n tech to be valuable in current n future job market...
The ccie is dead by David bombal...he covers what your talking about
Started out by watching a CCENT video to get some study tips and now I'm going to developer.cisco.com.
I thank you NetworkChuck and youtube autoplay (mostly chuck) for this experience.
Amazing Chuck! I'd love subtitles on your videos, I understand most of what you say, though :)
Am taking up this challenge Chuck
Thanks
Okay, you've convinced me. Let's do it!
I just found my interest in cyber security and programming and i keep seeing all of these videos after dipping my toes in for a few weeks. I'm currently studying for A+ and dabbling in ethical hacking and i have a loooong list of things i'm shooting for i just don't know where to start. I have a 36 hour course on python, another giant one on A+ and another one on ethical hacking.I don't know what order i should learn what in but i do know is i have not had this much fun learning in YEARS and i am glad to know about this channel.
If you can pass CEH then you dont really need A+. A+ is more of an overall basic cert, alot easier than CEH
I'm in. I'm about to go sleep, but I'm definitely looking at this in the morning. Let's make a facebook group!!
Mr.Preston has what I call a dream job. Cool man. Nice . I knew one day networking would go with scripting route
sounds awesome man
i am interested and will be signing up too
I'm currently studying to get my CCENT, soon followed by my CCNA. I've been interested in learning some Python, but was scared to even dip in. Your enthusiasm won me over, lol. I'll be logging in and checking out the videos. Thanks as always for the great content on your channel. One more thing... I'd definitely be down to join a FB page of you create one. #ChallengeAccepted
Network Chuck is a prophet! Hank is Awesome!!
Thank you very much, you are awesome guy.
Hello Chuck. Let's do it. I am subscribing right now. I hope I am not too far behind you in the course. And I need to write it: I love your style. Keep this channel going.
Thanks for the guidelines
Hey Chunk
Lol I’m still working on my getting my ccent but I’m ready to dive in 🏄🏾♂️ and change my life
Good video. I am working on CCNP Encor now then maybe CCNP ENAUTO. Definitely want to build up Automation skills and maybe AWS next.
I'm in, was already planning on taking an "Automation with Python" class next semester at the local community college-
Can't stop looking at your beard man, It's amazing! You should make a tutorial on how to grow one, as a network engineer.
haha, as you master networking concepts it naturally grows.
great video! and challenge accepted !!!
Definitely taking this challenge
I love this video and challenge accepted.
I am in Cyber Security. I will be graduating in May 2019 and I want to get into Automation. I will be starting the Devnet courses this week itself because to be honest, I feel I am overwhelmed with all that is out there.
I bought a book to start learning C++; Im studying for my CCNA after I completed all my networking courses in college; coding is definitely way harder
Start with python
good head start, good luck and work hard.
Challenge Accepted, Chuck. We're doing this!
Let\s do this, guys. Thanks, Chuck.
I'm in. Network programming, that seriously very very interesting. Create the damn group right now. Very motivating video btw. Thanks
It's coming!
i love your English language, I really want to do the way you talk
I’m in .thank you for expecting in your group
I am into the challenge as well .
I just got my CCENT and working on my CCNA but I am down with learning some programming.
Hey chuck, i feel more comfortable with juniper than cisco, is going the juniper pathway as valuable as the cisco one?
fully motivated and iam on the team :)
Accepted ! I’m in.
I will take the challenge.
Im onboard ✋ feel at a bit of crossroads... Got CCNA R&S a couple of weeks ago, since then ive been unable to decide what to do.
I started looking at MCSA Server, then started Security+ and now im looking at python... Need some focus!!
I am in team, Very existing about network programmability.
hey, chuck following u from a few time now. never commented before. u inspired to take the challenge. um on it. cheers
Thanks for commenting Sadik! Really great to hear from you.
Yes I want to take the challenge
Taking the challenge
I'm in. About to finish 300-115. But after that, sure it sounds so cool.
One thing you can do is try to automate your labs. That's what I plan on doing.
You have a fan student from India sir ....a networkautounicorn too 🇮🇳
Hey Chuck, I'm currently working on my net +, could I also jump in on this network programibility course or should I wait until I get my net +
Wow! Cisco got you hooked. Thank you for the videos!
hey chuck I just ended with my CCNA:R&S and is going to start with CCNA: SEC and SDNA, IBN, DNA CENTER looks amazingly interesting.
You got me in and I'm going to start with the course you mentioned!
Lets make a facebook or a business whatsapp group and add all the interested ones!! What say?
BTW I am a MCA(MASTER's OF COMPUTER APLICATION) student and going to be a post grad in next 6 months.
Group is coming! Thanks!
@@NetworkChuck Was wondering if you can make a discord group that will help a lot : )
Can u add me in the group?
Really enjoy listening and learning through your videos. Great at what you do. Keep up it up brother.
Thanks
I just finished my ccna just got my preliminary report and waiting for cisco's confirmation. I'm in network security field dealing mostly with firewalls should i go with the security route or the network dev ops.?.
Can someone tell me how much ccna r&s from netacad is different from ccna composite... im not asking about cert value ( i have netacad certs from official academy and want to get industrial certification)...im asking about materials to learn from.. is netacad courseware enough for the ccna composite 200-125 or not?
