Pomodoro method, 2 hour timer on youtube. Basically, 25 minutes study, 5 minutes rest X4.
In the 5 minute rest I stretch, go to the restroom, and walk around my apartment. Great method if you want to stay motivated and get a solid 1 hour 45 or 2 hours of study done each day.

Question, in one of your videos you mentioned a digital notepad you had been using for around 4 months at that time. I can't seem to find it now to purchase it. Can you please reply with the name of it so that I can purchase one this weekend. Thanks.

Once I hit that mental block of studying, I put down everything I'am doing, gather my keys, equipment, wallet, and then go to the nearest YMCA and start lap swimming. Some people think it's a bit bizarre because I've done that without saying anything and just walk out, but it works for me because I clear my mind after an hour of swimming.

I love this! I have recently (the last few semesters of school) implemented habit stacking! I didn't know that's what it was called, but I have exponentially increased my quality of life. I've increased productivity, decreased stress, and even improved my health! I'm a 3rd year full-time IT student, have 2 young children. Creating a routine (specifically a morning routine) has been essential in me getting stuff done. I have a 4.0 GPA and I still have time to study for my Network+. Here is my current schedule.
    0350-wake up
    0400-0430- Lift or run
    0430-0450- shower, skincare routine
0450-0500- make coffee, short journal entry
0500-0600- Certification Study (Currently finishing a video course, next week start practice exams)
    0600-0700- Schoolwork -assignments/projects/study
0700ish- kids awake (That starts a whole other routine)
My study area is my kitchen table, but its like a totally different place when it's just me, my family is still sleeping, and the sun hasn't risen. It's so peaceful and perfect for me. I setup my space the night before to create the environment: Open and charged laptop and clean rocketbook pages (I had one before I saw your video, so "I liked it before it was cool").
I'm starting a Corporate IT internship next week and working on making some adjustments to my routine. I'll probably have to shorten study blocks by 10 minutes each in order to leave 20 minutes to get ready for work.
The key to this all working is prepping the night before so my morning routine goes smoothly! Get my coffee pot ready, set out my gym clothes, prep my study space etc. Also, having a study plan, like you said. Mine is go through 2 video courses ( however long that takes with the hour each day). A week of practice exams, a few weeks of labs, and a few weeks of going over week topics and going through a cert book.
I have so much more I could say bout this topic, iff you made it this far, you rock haha

I start with Cioara’s course in the morning because watching a video with a scratch pad & some coffee is easier than reading when you’re still groggy. If anyone knows about Jeremy Cioara, his energy and enthusiasm goes well with some AM coffee. Then throughout my day on breaks and at night I go through the CCNA book on the same topic to reinforce what I learned in the video. Having already heard and seen it, going through the book becomes a breeze and delight because it’s familiar. That “I’ve seen this before” feeling. Plus it’s interesting to see different approaches to the same ideas. For instance in subnetting Todd Lammle will find the block size/increment by subtracting the octet in question from 256, and Cioara will take the last network bit and convert it to decimal. Understanding two approaches can really help to check your work. (That’s just 1 example, and here are others, I’m sure)

I hope all people will know the value of devotions because; this will be much easier to understand if they do, but thanks for the tip Bro and God bless you!

Work on a really grueling and soul sucking helpdesk to remind yourself that you don't want to be stuck in tier II the rest of your life. That doesn't work every day, so studying for 25 minutes and then playing for 15 works as well.

  • @chris8534

For me it is to study first thing in the morning - straight into the shower, heater under desk, coffee on my desk ready to go. I don’t have the distractions of the day, had a lot of wasted time in my morning routine anyway and can do whatever l want at night. Plus l tend to gloss over video training before hitting a book. There is a great quote l like to when hitting those sticking points ‘when you get tired rest, don’t quit’

Some hacks that I've learned from others or developed on My own are these:
1.) As soon as you wake up (after you take that morning trip to the bathroom) make your bed and do some minor cleaning. It builds a type of metaphorical inertia and starts your day with a small accomplishment.
2.) Instead of thinking, "oh crap, I know I need to freaking study...," Visualize yourself at the end of this long, tedious road. For example, I want to be a pentester. I visualize Myself grinning with a brow furrowed with focus. The visualisation resumes with a montage of things I don't understand yet, but I add in this ritual the memory of having learned it some time from where I physically sit in spacetime. I picture shaking powerful hands. Maybe a head of a security firm says she's fascinated with My techniques to bypass what she thought was air-tight security. Maybe HR at a hospital sigh a defeated albeit happy breath, that I beat his security but I'm at least on his side. Or, the leader of some local business starting up says they'd like to hire Me or retain Me to try to breach and improve their security on a regular basis. I walk back those final achievements to the end of taking an exam. I feel that nervous energy, that nail-biting, breath holding, pacing the floor anxiety before getting the good news that I've passed the exam for a cert. Going back further, I find Myself recently triumphant over a stumbling block in understanding something- that *eureka* moment in a grocery store when the last tumbler hammers into place and I finally got it. Retreating further in the timeline within this visualization, I am rewarding Myself with a few drinks for months of studying, working out, and all the other lovely licks from the fire of the Promethean forge which has raised Me from the stagnant morass which has engulfed Me. I'm basking in Pride and Power, getting praise from others but most importantly from Myself. Then I come back to Me, right now, waking up from this spell, and I'm seeing a door which begs to be opened, in the form of My study materials. "Game on!" I say, challenging anything that dare come between Me and My future of Power and Success.
3.) Pretend there exists some god or goddess smiling upon Me, like a celestial parent that yearns for the day when I actualize the Power of My Will, to lay up for Myself the treasures of the Earth, and swoon in the sweet indulgences of My desire. Feeling the proud pat on the back of forehead kiss of praise with each accomplishment. Hearing the caring chides whenever I fail to work towards self-Empowerment in phrases like, "Aww come on, you were doing so well! I know this is fun now, My dear, but why not use this as a reward when you've worked towards Mastery! Isn't wealth, power, and influence better than laying around watching television?"
4.) Pretend I'm talking with My potential future selves from time to time. The lazy, underachiever future is laying there, penniless consumed with apathy and neglect, saying "this is the last **** you can give, mate. Do it now!" And the powerful, wealthy and influential Me is saying, "Oh I have so much to tell you, but I can't talk long! Your future is sweeter than any narco-nap you've ever had! Thank you for staying on the right track!"
Most of these are a form of ritual, but they certainly give Me the motivation to keep chugging along when I remember to do them.

One thing I always have to remind myself of is that God wants us to be the head and not the tail. Most people think you have to be a good person to go to heaven or "repent of your sins". The bible actually teaches something different.
      A man asked a question..
      Acts 16:30-31
...Sirs, what *must* I do to be saved.
And they said *believe* on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved...
Notice the answer wasn't to "give your life to God", or be a better person or stop sinning etc. Salvation is based on faith and faith alone.
      John 3:16 kjv
      John 3:36
      Ephesians 2:8-9
      Titus 3:5
      Galatians 2:21

    My quirky habit tip:
Buy some glass friendly markers and each night before bed write at least three goals you want to accomplish on your bathroom mirror.
Whenever I wake up and get ready for the day, it's the first thing I see, and I'm more likely to get it done.
This helped me prioritize my CCNA Studies, and I've been doing this ever since.

OMG!!! the first part.......that is soooo me!!! I feel so lost in whats in my head and whats not....... Learning network basics, programming basics, security basics all in one....... in 5 month! I sometimes really feel like.... ok... its too much..... I am just....taking a break....but I LOVE IT!! Theres NO WAY I am giving up!! Thank you Chuck for these awesome videos. They really, truly help!! Hey, you are helping people all over the globe!! :)
Things that also really help me are mind maps. They take time and effort, but they bring order in the chaos for me. They make me think "I dont have time for this" sometimes, but once finished, they actually save so much time and make studying more efficient for me!
And as far as study place goes.....I get distracted easily.. I mean REALLY easily. So, what I try to do, is get a routine, and try not to break it, even on days you are off.. What I mean is, I wake up, give my daughter and my wife a big good morning hug, make breakfast for them, walk the dog, make breakfast for myself, go upstairs, into my "Batcave" (also known as my place to study), close the door, put on my headphones (yes, even if I am not listening to anything..... it just helps my mind block out the outside world...), and take my breakfast, my tea.... and GO.
By the way... having things ready when you start studying is another super tip. Actually, its one of the reasons they hammer on making your bed so much in the military.........at least.... how ever bad (or good) your day was, you are really tired, you come back.... at least to a made bed, feels sooo goood... no matter if you did it yourself. Same thing for starting studying. Prepare everything, so you can jump right in when you need to. Proven method, works every time for me!

Network Chuck, you are so motivational thank you. And yes, say to yourself that you will watch one video for 20 minutes then read a little bit of the CCNA book or do a LAB for another 20minutes is so much better than kidding yourself that you will study 2 hours each day and end up doing nothing. Break the study up into small, small segments

I made sure to put a 2 hour break between 2 classes a day for uninterrupted study, and I'm definitely going to take this video into consideration when classes start back up. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you're really doing the lord's work lmao thank you for making all these incredible videos!

Dude I love your channel. I know I'm late to the party here but if anyone reads this, I highly highly recommend The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg to go along with Atomic Habits. I'm a hypnotherapist by trade and I work with people on habit building in order to change their life. It really is all about the small incremental changes we make. Btw Pomodoro Method is good too. Look into the work of Rossi and Ultradian Rhythms; the book The 20-Minute Break if you REALLY want to maximize your productivity. Also, another neat caveat: information is better retained when you study two different things at a time, no more or less. Which is why I'm here. When I'm done studying hypnotherapy and the mind, I shift gears to studying tech skills!

Thanks for the tips and for being my conscience for the day. I'm ADD and the Pomodoro technique has worked in the past, but I had left it by the wayside. The reward bundling also makes sense.
Careful about over-caffeinating, though! I am also a coffee addict and, while there is no definitive research that caffeine is truly "bad" for you, it can exacerbate anxiety as well chronic pain issues you might have to see a urologist for...

On the the topic of removing friction, I find it is easier to study in a room that is devoid of distractions and clutter.
I always make sure that all my study materials are in one place, and they are ready to move. That way, if my room is a mess, or if there are other distractions around the house that require attention, I can just pick up and leave to go to the library or coffee shop.

  • @andreii6938
    @andreii6938 2 роки тому

    a very TLDR summary:
    1. Cue: Habit Stacking - add the desired habit to an existing habit
    2. Craving:
    1. Temptation Bundling - pair what you like with what you dislike - reward yourself.
    2. Surround yourself with people who share the same values
    3. Motivation ritual: do something you enjoy before the new habit (what you probably dislike)
    3. Response:
    1. make the good habit easier for yourself/remove friction from starting the task + add friction to a bad habit
    2. two-minute rule: break the habit into small chunks
    3. use technology - automate + keep yourself responsible
    4. Reward: Immediately reward yourself after completing your habit

Something right SMALL STEPS in the right direction think where that goes over a period of 1 year or 3 years eventually you will progress through those topics.

I find whenever I get really bored with a topic or maybe it's really dense/hard to mentally digest, that I think "what would me from 3 years ago think about being able to learn this?" or "how would it feel to totally own this topic on the job"? Usually that peaks my curiosity again (like with OSPF LSAs for example, they can be dense and boring, but think of how much you are able to understand and actually engineer an OSPF routed network by comprehending them!)
