I have a head injury from the military so my memory is spotty at best, but I've focused on the art of resourcefulness and that's helped a ton
I struggled with these fears for years. I stayed in lower-level roles of ISP support much longer than I needed to because I was afraid I couldn't learn new skills.
I was lucky enough to fake my way into firewall support, where I worked with a lot of guys half my age and twice as smart as me. I learned a lot from my time at that job. The most important thing I learned was that you don't need to know the answers, you need to know how to find the answers.
I'm back in school again at age 56, rounding out my skills and getting more certifications.
I’ve sadly done the same. Stayed at the job too long… makes you fearful of moving on
Well said. The fear of moving to a new job. Moving out of your comfort zone..
That was a hell of a motivational speech! And I just passed the first part of my CCNA(chapter 1-3: the easiest i would say.)
I am actually transiting from Hospitality to IT. 35 yrs old but still willing to learn and succeed; "and be better than I am today!"
Thank YOU Chuck!
This comment provides so much motivation because...same!!!
Same.
Have you completed the whole thing yet ?
Stay Focus! Good Luck!!
I was in the Hospitality for over a decade, I transitioned to Banking to now FinTech(IT hybrid) still wanna get these certs to move up to maybe even do Cloud and/or SWE, follow Chucks advise just jump into helpdesk, just get out of hospitality its a trap, even though the money might be better at the moment but in the future >IT will be even greater money
After a month I’ll be going back to college to pursue my dream at the age of 34. Needed this video to push myself forward 🤗 thank you!
Hey, just remember there are some of us who are older than you and going . I just finished my second bachelor's and I have almost 10 years on you. I'm making a complete career change. You got this.
I’ll be jumping back in to finish up my BS at 33. I was enrolled at 22 but psyched myself out- similar to the thoughts in this video.
Just going back at 29. Got network+ last week! Good luck.
good luck bro, I went back at graduated at 39, it can be done at any age
Im right behind you, 30yrs old and. 10 military years later I'm about to start school In an effort to be a network engineer one day.
A network engineer just hears the call to become one.Every day I feel like the meme dog in the lab,I have no idea what I'm doing, but when I compare my self right now with my self a year ago and that version of me with my self two years ago...I see huge progress ...But still I have no idea what I'm doing(that's why I google a lot).Nice video with good point, kudos.
Thanks Kostas! Yep, most of the time we don't know and it's our job to learn it!
kostas kefallinos lol 😂 you got this !
Mate, my new favorite phrase is "checking the google" ol
@@bluesdog88 hate wasting time searching, but I must admit, I learn as much from Google as I often do in class. Class demands the answers, but when textbooks fail me, Google to the rescue!
What 'The Calling' looks like : did you take your toys apart with a screwdriver? Did You ask for a computer instead of a PlayStation as a kid? As a teen , did you teach yourself taxes so you can do your parents taxes ? Did you figure out how to set up Denon receiver ?
Thanks man I appreciate this. Iam 30 with a young family and they are counting on me. This goes beyond IT and is just solid life advice. Thanks Mate!
Yeah I have the same concern ... my family depends on my income and if I switch careers now this would certainly go down for the start ... :S
Much blessings, Levi.
Right there with you
Bro me too, i have been obssessed with computers but never pursued it as a job till a few years ago when my daughter was born.
Man!! You verbalized my fears/doubts almost to the tee! I appreciate the encouragement. I have been doing desktop support for about 17 years since high school and didn't have the confidence/motivation to move forward until recently. In an online class and attaining my Comptia and Cisco certs! So thanks again!
17 YEARS?! Not sure what exact job u were doing but how were u able to manage doing Support/desk side work for that long? That side of IT is hell.
@@connora518 you can be your own worst enemy. I can relate
This is what i feel. I have been at IT support endless bored job.
I'm a ccna and working towards my ccnp at the moment....your videos are really informative and inspiring. Thanks for the awesome content...big ups from South Africa!
+Adil Satar Hey Adil! I'm working on my CCNP as well! I only have the TSHOOT left. How far are you?
I love hearing from different countries!! It's amazing how connected everyone really is!! Go networking!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the response I really appreciate it! I'm working on my 1st paper...going to do route 1st....wasn't sure if I should do route or switch 1st....My colleagues at work recommended route 1st....what do u think?
I did SWITCH first but only because I was more familiar with switching topics and wanted to knock out a test faster.
I would probably say you should do ROUTE first because the topics overlap a bit on the SWITCH test with Layer 3 switching.
Thanks for the advice...I really appreciate it...and by the way the video about "procrastination" spot on my friend....u really helped me get out of that zone....
Of course!!
Procrastination.....the struggle is real!! I use the Pomodoro method in almost every area of my life now. It's so helpful!
I love your videos; very inspirational. I went from a clinician to an IT administrator in just a few years and everything you said is spot on. Believe in yourself, work hard, and you will make it happen!
I love your story! That's awesome!
Thanks for the encouragement Adam and thanks for watching!
I'm currently nearly in tears from all these thoughts. I've been studying my ass off and I dont feel good enough. It scares the hell out of me.
just try and do your best is the most important thing. i've got ccna and study my butt off and keep learning more boi :)
Keep grinding. Every new skill or bit of knowledge you absorb makes you that much more prepared. It does help to compare what you know now with what you knew a week, month, or year ago. When I was on a production job, I ended most days cleaning up after work while tearing up, wanting to know if I could ever be more. If you have that chance, don't let doubt or fear end it. Remember this... time passes, and the next year comes quickly. As that time passes, you will look back on those difficult moments. Just make sure you can say, "I didn't give up, and I tried hard as hell."
This is exactly how I feel
I haven't been studying, because I have no energy, and I still feel less worried than you. It might just be until my money runs out, tho..
Stay on track. I've been there... Don't give up. If you keep studying there will be an "Aha" moment and suddenly everything will start to make sense and trust me it can take years.
Thank you Chuck for this encouragement. At the tender age of 51 and without a lick of knowledge in tech, I'm about to embark on a journey to get certified. Pray for me.
We believe in you boss
Huge thanks Chuck on this video, I'm heading towards 50 and looking at becoming a network engineer and went to the trouble of getting the ICND 1/2 books and still having a lot of doubt! This video is a massive help and even in 2020, a lot of people can learn from this!

Can I start my career in networking after age 25
@@INFOTAINMENT1144 what kind of question is that? you can start anything at anytime!
I had to comment! I just found this video and it has encouraged me beyond what you can comprehend. I come from a family of network engineers/programmers (all the men) and I let comparisons and our learning differences get in my way. I’m a stay at home wife and mother now and I’m choosing to go the CCNA. Everyone is supportive, but the pressure is real and the work is much harder for me than it was for them. But I’m done comparing. I’m 42 and haven’t been a student in almost 15 years. This is going to be so much fun! Thank you for this video!!!
Dude! I was in a rough spot today as I went through my ch2 Lab for CCNA2...the level of difficulty/complexity in the verbage really ramps up, and I have some really narcissistic peers who at times act like those gurus you mentioned and I hit a wall today. So! I ordered the companion guides to netacad and am biting fingernails waiting for them to get here. Unfortunately I have to withdraw from ccna2 and take an elective since it's still early in the course, but i seriously had these doubts you mentioned and this video restored my confidence/commitment to persevere/try harder! You definitely have a good head on your shoulders dude! Keep it up

Dude, before I watched this I was doubting whether or not to even pursue network engineering just since I didn't think I could do it. I was doubting myself before I even started learning about it. You're very well spoken and have a inspirational way of talking. You helped me stop doubting myself and made me want to pursue it with everything I got even if I do fail.
MAN! NetworkChuck thank you for making this video! I'm currently doing my 2nd CCNA classes in college and my teacher showed us your channel. I'm just glad I wasn't the only one who had the same fear as you did before. Thank you for explaining and telling us your whole journey of becoming a Network Engineer this was very inspiring!
I found this today by pure chance & it was just the video I needed to address my current reservations. It's not a technical video per se, but an important video to help you build a foundation to become confident & pursue your goals! Much appreciated Sir! You've definitely earned a new Subscriber.
Thanks for this video man.
"Comparison is the thief of joy" is not always true but definitely always something to be considered.
True. Sometimes comparison can be used as a way to set goals....but often it is a detriment
Yeah, never beat yourself up by comparing to other but instead try and learn from that comparison. Fill the knowledge gap.
I just got a job as a junior network engineer after obtaining my ccna and having only an associate degree. This video was pretty much exactly what I needed to hear to calm the nerves during the days before my start date. Thank you Chuck!
How are you doing now
Update?
Every time I feel like losing, I come back to this video. I just passed CCENT and I am ready to attach CCNA strong thanks to your support!
Currently I'm a fresher with 0 years experience & working with an network team with min 6-7 years of experienced engineers..I kept feeling useless to the team..bcz i was comparing myself with my teammates! Then I Started searching for courses which they have done..asking questions continuously to them that how they can do such critical tasks so easily..... & After listening to ur reality check #1...im definitely going to stop that & focus on my knowledge..ur vdo has turned my vision to a positive perspect !! Really very helpful vdo...thankss a lot..😇
I found myself stuck in a transition I did from lan/wlan support to ntwk optimization within te company I’m currently working for, millions of bad feeling going back and forth in my head, always comparing myself to the other engineers in the team and feeling nothing close to them... failed in the first CCNA attempt and now trying to run from the opportunity of becoming a successful ntwk engineer, but as you wisely said, it’s all about persistence! Thanks a lot for sharing those thoughts and experience! watching this video made me see a light in a dark tunnel!
Man oh Man. Thanks for this video. I started back to school for It last fall. I have run though all these fears. You absolutely nailed it dude. It really helps to know that others have been in my exact same position
Thank you for trying to help other people! After watching your videos, I decided to prepare again for CCNA. I'm from Russia, and I'm still a student, but I tried to pass CCNA in 2016. Unfortunately, I failed my exam, because I prepared for exam using only materials in Russian without including English materials. When I started to schedule my exam I understood that exam will be only in English. I was upset, but I tried to pass exam. I failed it and got only 712 points out of 1000. I think it's not bad result for the first trying, because it was a big exam (CCNA not CCENT), and I got a really great life experience. In last August CCNA had been updated and I should learn new topics. I understand that if I want to be a really good network engineer and get a great job, I also should learn English. Now I study English in my city (fortunately there is an excellent foreign school - International House). And I really feel better, I feel that I understand a lot of new English information.
I hope you'll understand me, because I'm not sure that I wrote my message grammatically correct. Thanks for your videos! They are really useful (especially Pomodoro method)!!
Hey Ivan! You're English is great actually!
I can't imagine trying to take the CCNA in a somewhat foreign language....that had to be very tough!
Thank you for the kind words and thanks for watching!
Whereabouts in Russia are you?
Thanks for this video. I’m a 4th year Computer Science student who didn’t know what to do with my degree. Last year I took an introductory class to networking and loved it! And honestly when you were discussing your doubts you had in the process, it was like you reached into my mind about all the thoughts I have everyday.
Thanks for consoling my doubts and I am taking a networking course right now which I’m excited to start learning more about! I’m glad I found your channel so I can learn more about this exciting field :)
I’m so grateful for you to do this video! I really felt like i’m not good enough and really compared myself to others, and your video really made me feel like it’s okay, and i’m in a progress and i’m good enough.. thank you so much

I usually never comment and this the 1st video I ever find from you, all my life I've struggled with my self confidence in terms of my intelligence, I could always stand my ground with the best of them during show time but struggled in private. I'm graduating high school in a month and after considerable research and this video I'm planning on studying networking and cybersecurity in college to have a career as a network engineer, for once in my life I feel confident in my intelligence knowing that I may not be the best in the field but I'll always be competent, thank you.
At the moment I'm a Sound Installer technician and my duties consist of doing network Installation and migrations with switches and routers. I work along the network engineer but I do no network engineering because he does that. So I do know the equipment and I have that hands on experience on the field. My goal will be to acquire my CCNA to become a network engineer and with my technician background I feel I can make that transition easily.

I'm getting a lot of companies not wanting to hire me because of the layoff I have. I don't have any certs though, always put those off. Mabey if I get my CCNA that'll show companies even though I haven't worked in IT in 2 years I'm still "in" it.
That's a tough situation. You've got the experience...it's just tough to explain that gap. I definitely think a CCNA will help you out. The CCNA tells companies that your skills are up-to-date and relevant to their needs.
What an excellent video, I needed to hear this.
I have been stuck in a helpdesk role for over 5 years, lost the passion for IT as I had other life commitments in the way, until a month ago watching channels like yours and others have boosted my desire and passion to learn more and progress to another level of IT with a higher wage. A lot of what you said in this video is what I’ve been feeling and thinking within me, those insecure thoughts and personal demons were clinging on to me and I wasn’t even aware. So, thank you Chuck for putting things into perspective! Thumbs up and you’ve got another subscriber!
I'm 36, CCIE, MCSE and sometimes even I don't feel that smart :D
really haha
You're where I want to be, must be nice living the dream.
Damn but you look like a total dude
How long it takes you to get CCIE uncle.... :D
dude you're like the final season xD
Hey Chuck, just found you videos and I think they're brilliant. I've been in the business 30 years now - Started at the bottom of the helpdesk and worked my way up to be the European Infrastructure Manager. It still took me all that time to get my first 'Wizard' moment - Walking through the machine hall, saw a guy (Just out of University) scratching his head trying to connect a Cisco switch to a Virtual switch on a Vsphere box... I did the Obi-Wan Kenobi hand signal to tell him that these weren't the droids he was looking for and said "Remember, the connection needs to be a trunk, even it's only carrying one VLAN." Bowed and walked off to the docking bay to board the Millenium Falcon... Total wizard
Great video! I'm 10k shy away from making six figures, I have 3 years of ss7 & BGP experience and I'm in my early 30's. I don't have any certs, and till this I still don't think I'm smart enough. I don't have any certs but I'm planning to change that in the coming months.
I feel like none of the comments are mentioning the constantly changing props, I love it. haha. Definitely the comparison of this environment to the one you have now. Always have to come back to this video to stay motivated. Thank you for what you do, Chuck.
Data networking, pugs and the office!! Awesome!! Thanks for the video!
What more do you need?
Thanks for watching Michael!
I'm blown away, I still cannot believe that I got the job and I'm now a Network Engineer. After 3 years at SD I subscribed to a Network Fundamentals internal training with one of our network colleagues and that just changed my life, from that moment on I knew what I would absolutely love to do. I was amazed how all network guys talk with such passion about network. Anyway my trainer recommended me to his TL that was searching for a while now to extend his team he must've seen something in me, he gave me 2 weeks to learn volume 1 from CCNA study guide and 2 weeks after he tested me and gave me the job! I cannot believe how excited I am but I'm also worried if I'going to be good enough.
Update?
Comparison is the thief of joy.

I love this. 🥰 I’ve been a network engineer for nearly 10years now. Climbing the chain, from Junior to Mid-Level, up to manager and now finally a senior. I feel like I’m still just as stupid as when I started. 😂 I just really love what I do, I really love the feeling of solving the company stress. I promise you can become a network engineer easily if you want. Before I started, I was a mover with very basic technical knowledge. ❤❤
Thank you. Made me feel better about trying to enter the network world at 30 :(

I developed an interest in networking when I was about to finish my graduation, and I was graduating in a different major (not computer science which included networking in their syllabus). I had no one to discuss with let alone teach me, so i downloaded tutorials, books, virtual machines and although I had no idea what I was doing simply playing around with them in my laptop gave me a basic understanding of how networks work. First forward a few years and now I work in the data center of the second largest bank in my country where managing Network Firewalls, IPS, inspecting deep into packets and troubleshoot complex networking glitches in the production environment is part of my day job. Starting at 30 wouldn't matter much if you find tinkering with computers in general a fun hobby. You got this!
EvilSapphireR thank you. I thought I was too old lol for the longest time. I appreciate it.
Thanks man. Im an old head 37 and still doing low level networking and helpdesk. This video has inspired me.
I'm glad you made this video. It is very inspiring. Thank you.
Dude get out of my brain. Everything you said is so true. I'm a help desk technician with a few certs under my belt and I'm currently working on my MCSA, and MCSE and I think these things all the time. Your video was very helpful to me, and now I feel more motivated to keep grinding and become a Sys Admin/engineer. Keep up the awesome content dude!!! You just earned another sub.
HA! Thanks for stopping by!!
I'm thinking about doing some Microsoft certs as well...I love the server realm.
Good luck sir!! Glad I could help!
holy shit thank you brother for this video. I've always had this exact fear. fuck, it i'm gonna go for it again.
Glad I can help! Love your enthusiasm!
sean connery = anthony hopkins. great vids, thanks for the reality check. subbed.
lol. yep...
Thanks for watching and glad I could help!
"You still wake up sometimes don"t you? You wake up in the dark and hear the screaming of the lambs." Sean Connery. No, wait? That's not right... ? Lol.
I know this video is really old but it hit home. Thank you it really does help the encouragement.
Reboot your computer and call me when I finish my CCNA.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Did you
Check the O F F switch?
I'm a year and some change late but let me tell you how TRUE and AWESOME this video is. I am a Network Engineer with CCNA and I STILL deal with some of these fears especially as now I'm working on changing jobs. I never really had any experience in Network Engineering... I joined the military 10 years ago and qualified for the job. My first 4 years had nothing to do with networking. My last two years gave me a lot of technical experience but I decided to get out to work on the outside. The past 3 years has in some ways been hell with the hours and such. I felt like I just wasn't getting it even though yes, I have definitely improved but... I still have my job for a reason, right? Now that I'm wanting to move onto my next cert (and wanting to dip my toe into Cloud), all of the fears are rushing back in.
I needed this video and I want to say that if anyone is reading this, you can do it too.
The real question is what makes you a network engineer. You will never know what something is untill you try it.
I am 35 (sahm) and have no I.T skills just the average end user and now I am motivated to embrace this journey. I have to say I am so scared that I might not get it and the black screen literally puts me off. Hearing you talk about your fears gave me hope. Thanx
I love this, we were all scared with starting any IT job. But like you said, google is god and you learn by working in IT. Book knowledge is good, but in IT you do not really know a situation until it actually happens.
Thanks!
Right, confidence is built through experience and everyone feels inadequate at some point...and sometimes at regular intervals!
A 21 minutes video, a lifetime lesson. Thank you very much, Chuck. I can relate to this 100%. I'm grateful I found this.
Nothing to lose? We have time to lose. Time is precious. We all have a finite time on this earth and if we waste it, there's no getting it back.
Agreed. But let's be honest....that time would either be spent studying or playing video games ;)
But you're right. I only make that statement because you aren't losing a lot....you will have gained knowledge whether you like the material or not.
Nothing is a waste of time if you learn from the experience wisely .

Such a great video!! I have been following you for a few weeks now. I just passed my CCNA and have been having trouble getting any type of calls back for even an interview. Mainly I suspect, because I have no practical experience. I am changing careers. I have definitely been feeling so much of what you have discussed in this video! It was such a relief to know it is not just me who felt this way! Especially coming from someone like you!
Thank you so much for making this video! It really has given me some relief and motivation!!
15:54 That's actually Anthony Hopkins, not Sean Connery ;)
This is great. I'm moving from the tech guy to cybersec analysis... it's been a fun ride so far
Thing I love about you is your answering question for the small guys, I really appreciate your video. Your exact fears are mine right now ...
I get that feeling ,after not passing an exam :(
Failing an exam is the WORST!!
But if I can pick myself up after failing an exam, so can you!
Thanks for watching!
Roy Staggers maybe they didn't have the time to properly study for the exam because they needed that time to make the money to save up for the exam.
Everyone's struggle is different, but the struggle is still real.
Roy Staggers but going into something with the mindset that you only have one shot at it will definitely make you put that extra effort into it. I get what you're saying.
NetworkChuck how much is sn exam
@@NetworkChuck I remember an attorney told me KNOW one ever asks how many times he had taken to pass the BAR- Just that he did:) NEVER give up-NEVER!
Just started studying for my CCNA! I definitely needed to hear this! Great video!
Chuck, thank you for sharing your experiences! I myself am preparing to change my career path, and will be soon dropping everything to move forward in this opportunity for my future. I’m sooo scared because of what I’m willing to give up to go for this dream, but I think it’s so worth it in the end! I’m less than 55k a year but more than 45k at the age of 29..from a financial point of view, would you say it’s worth it?
I must add, I understand I will need to take 2 steps backwards to move 10 steps forward, so I’m expecting a dip moving into an entry level network engineer position. However, my eyes are on the prize of the bigger picture, which is longevity and a solid specialized career path. So in my eyes, it is, but feedback is HIGHLY appreciated :)
I gotta say this video and the video with your brother and dad about doubting if good enough helped me a lot! Makes me realize I’m not the only one that feels like they are over their head at times and feels like they are good at faking it.
I appreciate the positive vibe in these videos. As I realize I am a 39yr old IT guy getting into Networking at this point in life and trying to study for certs and getting OJT, these inspirational videos help.
I really needed to watch this video. Exactly how i feel now before taking the exam. But i'm glad i am not the only one to feel this way.
Failure is only achieved when you quit. Success is a process of consecutive failures and not quitting.
