I have over 5000 miles on Shimano alivio rear derailleurs on two different bikes. One a touring bike with drop bars which I have taken through Europe and across the United States and the other on a flat bar bike I use for commuting in the city and gravel riding. Both have been excellent with only minor trouble over many years. They shift smooth and work great with Cassettes with big gears ranging from 30-34 with 3 chainrings in front ranging from 30-50. They have seen falls and tumbles and even gotten a little scuffed up but still no issues. On rough terrain they hold true and have caused little issue. The bike I ride currently I bought for 500 dollars and it came with flat bars and Shimano Altus 9 speed shifters and Altus front derailleur. The Altus shifter works great with alivio and allows you to hit a lower price point if you don’t mind being able to not shift down the cassette two ways. It was never a big deal for me. Alivio offers great value and performance and will stand the test of time. Alivio has kept me so satisfied that I haven’t felt the need to leave the world of 3x9 as I know it works and it has all the gearing I need to do anything from light single track to fast and technical road descents. Really the only place I’ve seen the reason to spend more money is on disk brakes. As I have learned the place to start with Shimano hydraulics is the mt500 or equivalent m-6000. They offer similar performance to The bleeding edge of Shimano line with just some extra weight. Great modulation, power and little fade. The same can not be said about the cheaper Shimano offerings.
I upgraded a 2005 Kona Blast from Altus 9 speed to the 4000 shifters, and cassette. For the RD, I used a Deore M511 non-shadow. Finally a Deore FC-M511 Crank with UN55 Bottom Bracket. Shifts crisp like you say and none of the ghosting or sluggish feel of Altus.
Im currently using this model on my xc hardtail,, and it works so great ,, i cant find big differences between it and xt model seriously..when i riding..
@@milankoncsard5701 I have an avalanche comp 2017, it has done already over 4000km and still was working perfect until last week that I crashed, now I am planing to upgrade all the gears system.
Thanks for your video! I've been looking for this type Shimano shifter how-to video. I haven't been on a bike in decades, so when my new one arrived the other day I was kinda puzzled as how this worked ( my bike didn't come w/ any instructions, so I used UA-cam). Your review was a great help! Thanks again!
I was running a whole alivio group before i changed to sram nx, its what i recommend my friends when they ask to upgrade their bikes, the only real downside is the weight especially on the crank but as a beginner trailrider u shouldnt be to concerned with weight :^)
Nice vid, thanks for the overview, I've ordered one to replace my Shimano M430 Alivio, hopefully this will cure my "gears slipping under load issue" it's been driving me nuts for ages.
Those shifters are not very good quality. A lot of vertical play on the handles. Also the internal metal used rust after 1 time driving in rain. Also plastic makes a squeeking sound when pushed in. Bought these as a replacement for my 15 year old Deores. After I cleaned the Deores I put them back, and they shift 2 classes better. Deores are undestroyable. The RD-M4000 derailleur I am not familiar with, so that can be good. But I would not go lower as Deore for off-road riding. RD-M591/2 is a better choice. I will install the Alivio shifters in the future on my indoor training bike!

Hi there, I’m thinking of replacing the sora r3000 RD to Alivio so that it can fit 12-36 cassette. The shifters are Sora. How bad chain slap should I expect, is it an improvement from Sora?
@SickBiker i got this derailleur on my new Cannondale Trail six, but it has some wiggle on the part where it is printed Alivio, that part is secured with 3 pins and on them there is like 0.2mm free space so it wiggles, my mechanic at bike shop told me that derailleur is bent but i had like 400km on and it never dropped...is that normal to wiggle a little
Hi ShaiBike :) I need your opinion.. Now i have the Sram X0 9V Rear Derailleur and the Sram X0 GripShift.. But the rear derailluer is a little loose and have a little crack in the carbon cage.. So i buy other Sram X0 9v derailleur and spent 150€ or i should buy the shimano alivio m4000 rear derailleur and the alivio shifter's?
I recently bought a trekking bike which has HG400 cassette and a Deore M591. The problem is setting up the shifting. While on the cog number 8 it makes the rattling noise and If i set up the cable from the barrel the sounds goes away but the cog 2 starts to do the same noise then. Is it a problem with compatibility between the RD and the cassette?
Hi there , hope all is well. I just bought a new hardtail Mtb , that comes with a full Alivio front and rear derailleur. The chain rubs against the front derailleur in some gears. Do you know how I can fix it. Is it becasue I an riding too harsh?? I do lots of whellies and humps, has something for knocked out of place ?? Thanks
Shimano XT is good, but Shimano Alivio, Acera and Altus is good too. Riders that ride a lot like commuters, bike messengers and so on wear out the parts anyway.
I have the same rd and shifter, shimano alivio 9s and im using a 11-48 cogs and 34t gears in front.. And advise on how to improve shifting? Coz it seems that i cant get it right, i even tried using a goat link to extend the rd but still it doesnt work well 😢. Any advise coming from you is well appreciated, thank you and have a good one sir!
Hey I know it's been long, but I'm wanting to do the opposite. Need easier gears for the hills here. Did you have to use the goat link initially for it to work (although not too well)? Is yours a 1x? I'm on a 34/46 front and 11-34 rear looking to up the cassette to 11-42.
hi, im currently running the shimano xt m772 rear derailleur on an 8 speed cass, but the alivio has caught my eye purely cause of the barrel adjuster that the xt does not have, so my question is - would i be upgrading if i went from XT to Alivio? better spring tension? thanks

Unfortunately, I live in Cambodia, where for years I've tried to buy it from the dealers. But bicycle dealers (the most legitimate operators in the country!!) here only want to sell bicycles, and not get involved in service beyond original bike assembly. I've tried ordering it online. I had the package shipped with a tracking number, but tracking seemed to 'disappear' (not an isolated incident in the least here!; it's happened to me many times. There is absolutely zero safeguarding of buyer purchases or supervision in the parcel shipping process. Cambodians simply claim packages from the USA without even knowing what's inside. They figure they can sell it if they don't want it.) once it arrived in Cambodia. I refuse to put fraudulent, Chinese copy parts on my bike, or engage in that activity. OEM Shimano or nothing. The xt is a lot easier to clean and maintain but actual shifting feel is very similar for sure
I have the same with Shadow on my GT Avalanche and it shifts prefectly. No problem so far, like Alivio over Deore!

this group set looks better than deores, especially the crank arms.
I like its look too.

buyed RDM 4000 Alivio yesterday and its smoth perfect with Bike: MTB DH

is this derailleur compatible with 44/32/22T crank?
How much does the Complete Alivio go for?? any Ideas?? I am looking to buy a budget MTB component
Is this shift smooth and fast than the tourney... And why you need more speed? I
Groupset Shimano alivio m4000, very recommend for MTB, XC, offroad or not?
Huh, I seem to thread my chain wrong in the cage. I looped it under that metal piece before the bottom jockey wheel.

If you have a triple crankset and / or a cassette with wide range of sprockets, it wouldn't be a bad idea.
What is the difference between Altus M2000 for Alivio M4000?

this sounds like a bent hanger
what is the max cogs size and crank size can the alivio operate?

You need to adjust the derailer
Which shifter you were using

if they are both 9spd it should work just fine

11-40 cogs, does it works for this rd ?
Sir Alivo vs Acera, which one is the higher grade component?
alivio is more expensive than acera, so alivio, I think wins it. Basically alivio is the upgraded version of acera
Is this a good rear mech for actual MTBing, like rooty singletrack/general XC riding? Or should I go SLX?
Alter Ego for me, Alivio Shadow is more than enough. XC to Trail no problem and the Shadow RD does do its job 👍👍👍
get a deore with a clutch
I have that derailleur but i can only down shift 2 speed at once.
also my bike have 3x8 and not 9. can i change the cassette?
antonio stefan gabriel you can but you need a new hub that can support a 9 speed cassete
8,9 and 10 use the same hub
SRAM X3 RD with X4 Shifters 8 speed shifts smoother than Deore or Alivio....if it doesn't say XT, it will shift rough. From personal experience....
Is m4000 and m430 is all same?
I think m4000 is the newer version
is it possible to convert my alivio 3x9 into 1x9?
danielrobert baui yes but your max ratio will be chainring 32 and 11-36 cassette, better buy a whole group set, sram NX is a good option

poli poli Go with deore
