Just a note for everyone using the barrel adjustor - rotating it clockwise will release tension and rotating it anti-clockwise will add tension. It's counter intuitive actually. That's why he rotated the barrel adjustor all the way in (clockwise) at the beginning of indexing - to be able to add tension afterwards as you most likely will. Another tip I got from their other indexing video, before adjusting the cable tension, rotate the barrel adjustor all the way in (clockwise) and then give it 3-4 turns anti-clockwise to have a bit more wiggle room in case your cable is too tight to begin with.
I’ve been working on my bikes for decades! (Not a pro by any means) everything from triathlon race bikes, cyclocross, and now my new obsession mtb’s, even my kids bikes. But this by far has been one of the best tutorials on rear mech adjustments!!! The camera angles, the explanation, and technique…Brilliant! Cheers boys very helpful 👏🏽🙌🏽
at the 7:43 mark you said it was lined up. I couldn't tell what you were looking at. If you would have pointed to the alinement that would have helped. That said, after many years of trying to adjust my derailleur I finally got it. Thanks for the vid. It really helped.
Please, do not delete this video - EVER! I have just relaced all the gears, chain, sprockets and bearings (for the second time) on my bike, but had forgotten how to set up the gears. I learned how to do it the first time by watching your excellent video and am sooooo glad it's still here. Thank you so much.
@@Scorpion1623 I'm 100% with you Scorpion . I've been adjusting derailiers for 50+ years and still can't do it. I tried following this video, but same result...looks like I'm dropping the bike off at the shop tomorrow!!
Thank you so much! Bought a new bike in box that gears where wrong and bike mechanics in town couldnt help me right now so after 10 min with help from you here they work spotless now 😍
Dude, you explained that better than anyone I have ever seen do it. Three points, Simple idea and it stuck with me. I did the 3 things exactly as you said, then sat down and figured I'd need to fine tune. I checked the indexing. Big surprise> I was hitting every gear on my cassette perfectly- what a thrill- so easy to do and remember!
Best out of all video so far, much more simple to understand and follow than the rest. Some of higher viewed video drive me mad with listen to the noise and adjust both cable gear and limits screw at the same time which is so complicated and headache. You make adjust so easy to learn for beginners like me. Much appreciated 🙏
Thanks to you, and this informative video which is easy to understand even for someone like me whom is a beginner MTB'er. After sending it to 2 professional cycling workshops here in South Africa, and throwing a ton of money on them, they could not get my gearing right, and eventually set my bike up but compromised my largest cog, they informed me that my bike needs a new cassette and derailleur. After watching your video and following it step by step, my bike now works smoothly on every single gear, including the largest cog :D Happy days! Well done Doddy!
So simple when you explain the process! I've always been a bit baffled on what to do, largely because nobody has ever taken the time to explain the process in detail - Thanks Doddy!
I love your tech videos especially when it comes to derailleur adjustments. I will say i feel like there is one thing that you should elaborate on...the hanger itself. As a bike tech 90% of the shifting issues i see are because of a bent hanger. Even the smallest crash can bend one and i understand that not everyone has a hanger alignment tool. But starting with a straight hanger is the base for building your shifting pyramid. Keep the content coming and keep the stashe 🤘
True. So you just have to buy a hanger alignment tool. A simple adjustment that will fix 95% of bent hanger issues is: with the hanger adjustment tool threaded in, lift tool arm up where it is parallel to the floor. Standing behind the bike, pull the tool to the right where the hanger is straight and even with the plane of the bike. Then stand opposite of the rear wheel, let the hanger tool drop to to the ground where it it is now in a vertical position. Pull tool hanger handle up about parallel with the floor or until the hanger it self looks relatively straight. Remount derailleur and check for performance. if it is still bent in too much, then you need to pull out both axis's a bit till the derailleur works effortlessly. if you have pulled it too far, the derailleur will have a hard time shifting all the way too the top gear and/or tend to jam on the smallest sprocket (high gear) and frame. Side note, it is possible to adjust a cast replacement break away hanger, just be careful. It's worth trying before you replace it with a new one.
Holy shit this was helpful! I was going to war for 4,5 hours the day before with my gears, but today after watching this video it took me 20 minutes to adjust them right. God bless you man!
Bravo mate. One of the best instructional vids I've seen. Crystal clear on the steps and the tools and how you know when the adjustments are correct. CHEERS!
Thanks for the advice. My husband Michael was having trouble getting his Deore XT 12 speed working properly. He said he chose your site because he said people with a British accent just seem smarter! He will be out again tomorrow because of your help.
Exactly what i was looking for: Wind barrel adjustor clockwise all the way in, do B-tension, then slight tension at the cable clamp bolt, upper and lower derailleur limits, barrel adjustment. Hope I hit all that and thank you for running through this! I did read that, for my SLX drivetrain, to finish up the barrel roll, go counterclockwise on say 4th or 5th gear until you hear the chain just start to rub on a lower(larger gear) then back off clockwise 5 clicks, and that should be dialed in.
It seems I do this just far enough apart to where I forget, and this will be my Go-To refresher vid in the future. Doddy explains it all clearly in minimal time so I can still catch a ride before the sun goes down - Thanks!
I've not been on my bike for WEEKS bc I flucked my derailleurs trying to fix them :/ THANK YOU: I was just about to go do another search for how to fix my mistakes! Perfect timing
Clearest explanation I've ever seen. A couple of points. At least the Shimano limit screws all seem to work so that unscrewing them counterclockwise relaxes the limit (i.e. max travel goes further away from the middle gear) and screwing them in tightens the limit. Additionally, they are usually labeled using a single tiny letter: H for high gear, the smallest sprocket, and L for low gear, the largest sprocket. The limit screws have two functions. The first is to limit travel of the derailleur so that the chain makes it to both outer sprockets without going past them. Additionally, once adjusted, the shifting will be at points equally divided between the two limits. If shifting one of the middle levels doesn't change the gear, and then the next shift level drops down two gears, properly adjusting both limit screws will also fix that problem.
Does the tension adjuster works the same way, ie unscrewing releases the tension, clockwise tightens the cable? I can't see any effect on my bike, when adjusting this one... it's on the derailleur, not on the shifter on my old RSX.
Just watched this and makes waaaaay more sense now! Just got my bike back and the gears were fine when it went in, but not dropping down like it did! I know my mech was removed, so I will check the adjustments now! Thanks
Every time I need to tune a derailleur I have to come back and watch something like this so thank you. Get a little better each time. I think the obvious solution is to just buy more bikes so I have more to fix.
Honestly this is the most important topic for a cycling channel. Ask any random person who doesn’t ride a bike why and they’ll usually tell you that they have a bike, but it’s broke. By broke they usually mean the gears are knackered.
Greetings from Montana USA! Great explanation. I've been doing this for decades but still checked out this video and learned. Setting up a new bike with 1x12. Didn't know about the mark on the back of the jockey wheel cage. Thanks! Something that helps me fine tune the barrel adjuster is to turn the bars hard left and turn the barrel in the direction that the shift is having trouble moving. Works great on-trail helping out friends compensate for cable stretch. Eee: I like a good tune, you're forced to! 🎶😉🎶
Thanks for an excellent explanation...this is clear enough even for a moron like me; I've had derailleur gears since being a kid in the 1970s but never really figured out how they worked.
Thanks for this then 👍. A nice clear explanation and demonstration how to get it right. It's not hard just know what you've got in front of you and go carefully and all's good. I've currently got my bike on the stand cleaning and replacing parts, next job is reset the sifting after new cassette and chain, I've done it many times but always felt like a dark art, so thanks for setting my mind at ease. Looking forward to cracking on with it now!
Thanks Doddy, been doing this for many years without really knowing a correct adjustment for the b screw. Used to just play until it works well enough. Good to know this time it's done right. AndyB
Thank you very much, you really helped me big time. I'm doing a bit of a tune up on my Specialized rock hoper tomorrow. Replacing my R. Derailleur and setting up my full suspension. Again thanks a bunch 👍👍👍👍
This is the video that It finally clicked for me how to do it. Must have watched 20 videos over 3 days problem after problem and finally my bike changes into the gear I tell it to.
Well that worked! And I avoided a visit to the bike shop. Thanks so much for a clear explanation of the actions and the order for taking them. Excellent!
Hey mate. I followed your vid and advice step by step to the letter for setting up my new derailer. And it was so perfect straight away from the get go . Your awesome mate.
Cool vid dude did my slx 12 speed by myself for the first time using this vid, used to pay £15 at a bike shop! Really clearly explained no stopping me now!!don't know what I was so worried about! Cheers!
Thanks! Noticed the back brake on the left, which would have the front on the right. I like that cause I came from dirtbikes and the front is on my right hand side, may switch mine up before I get used to the current setup.

I know this video has been out for a while, but wanted to let you know it was very helpful for me! I just adjusted my son's new Diamondback Cobra 20 rear derailleur. Some of the gears you could hear kind of grinding, and it wasn't possible to get to the biggest gear (7 I think?) - things just didn't line up properly. But after viewing only this video, I confidently sat down at the bike and fiddled with it until it shifts perfectly now. Indexing is dialed in, and when he gets back on it he'll definitely realize the difference. Thanks for helping me gain a new skill! Now to see what needs adjusting on my wife's bike...

Thank you, I got my bicycle ready for the fall season.
One point most bike mechanics have missed is tuning gears on an of Shimano 12 speed.
To tune the gears, tune in 5th or 6th gear like Shimano Di2.
It's in the Shimano 12 speed manual, I keep hearing the Shimano 12 speed shifting is not the best but once you tune it as per Shimano it rocks.
Thank you! I have the very same derailieur with the very same set screws. This was immensely helpful!
Thank you - this video really helped me after my mail order bike was not setup correctly 🎉

Thanks for the info. I was able to tune my Deore transmission on my new Ibis after watching this. Very helpful.
Best video for adjusting your rear mech! Thanks Doddy!
Thanks for the tutorial dude. It allowed me to set my 12 speed Shimano derailleur like a pro. You totally rule the game!!!
Excellent video! Great presenter, really confident and knowledgeable with very clear instruction.
Simply an awesome and well structured tutorial, Thank you!

Thanks for the video. After having a new cassette and chain installed I had to index the detailer.
Thanks for posting this :) after watching I managed to get the gears on my old bike working again.
