Barristan Selmy is legitimately one of the toughest men to have ever lived; he knew Daenery's great grandfather (Aegon 5th), ended the Blackfyre rebellions, served in the King's Guard of her grandfather and single handedly rescued her father when he was kidnapped by a rebellious Lord. If it wasn't for him Daenerys would never have been born.

@@MT-UK yeah we hear arthur is the best, but we don't really have as many feats for him as we do for selmy. i mean, on top of all that other stuff the guy above said, just to stress; selmy pretty much beat an entire freaking castle, singlehandedly!
true, i have little doubt arthur could beat selmy in a 1v1 sword fight, Especially with Dawn. Without Dawn it would be pretty close tho. But imo Selmy is a much more versatile combatant. He's known to be great both on horse and on foot, with a variety of weapons, and he wins a variety of different Kinds of fights in a variety of settings. in contrast Arthur Dayne lost 1 out of the 2 fights we know he was involved in. Outnumbered, yeah, but Selmy has been outnumbered before and still came out on top (to be fair to Dayne tho, there was probably magic involved from Howland).
Admittedly tho, another thing to consider here is that Selmy is a good bit older than Dayne, so he simply had more time than Dayne to perform all these great feats.

Yes, Sam is alive. This has been debated as to why -- since it looked like the White Walker looked directly at Sam at the end of the Season 2 finale. However, it is interesting to remember that "Will" -- "deserter" who was later beheaded by Ned Stark in the very first episode of the first season -- was also allowed to live by the White Walker who sliced off and tossed his fellow Night's Watch mate's head to him. It seems as though the White Walkers sometimes allow people to live perhaps as a taunt or perhaps as part of some unknown code that they adhere to.

Maybe it's to leave one survivor to tell the tale. But the interesting thing for me is both Will and Sam just give up in front of the WW. Will falls to his knees and despairs while Sam does the same sitting down and by averting his eyes.

    • @MuricaTurkey
      @MuricaTurkey Рік тому +3

@@NavsangeetSingh In the books this is not the case. The parts of the show you refer to as not making sense is true- It doesn't make sense because it's not what was supposed to happen. So the plot doesn't flow, and the character development is inconsistent in that moment (and a few others)
The show wanted to have a giant, visually impressive moment there. So they had an army in that scene
But originally, it was just 1 Other (aka White Walker) Sam and one of the brothers ran into after the big battle at The Fist, and Sam kills it.
He does so clumsily, blindly stabbing with his new dagger he took for himself from the bunch they found. He gets lucky, because when he stabs it, it's immediately destroyed by the dragonglass.
It's why he's still alive. It's why he knows that dragonglass kills them easily. It's, in fact, why he's called "Sam the Slayer". Though a good bunch of them say it sarcastically because they don't believe his story at first.
I liked some things about the show, but not how they wrote Sam (though I DO adore the actor's portrayal. He was perfect. It was the writing that was bad.)
They really did Sam dirty. They just let him stay mostly useless, unless something needed looking up in a book. Sam is not a warrior type, sure, but he doesn't stay a sniveling coward for long.
He's actually become quite brave and emboldened (if a bit naive) between the time he's saved by Jon from the bullies, to the time they get to Craster's, thanks to Jon's good influence. That's why he wants to help Gilly. He's not just being a foolish simp. He's trying to be a good man helping a girl who needs help.
There's lots about his character (and in turn the happenings around him) that just doesn't make as much sense because they oversimplified him and kept him emasculated instead of showing what a good, masculine man who just happened to be more of a scribe archetype instead of a warrior type, could be like.

In the middle ages, dwarfism was seen as a curse on the family, a sign of disfavor from God. Considering Tywin Lannister's primary concern is the reputation of the family name, the cruelty towards Tyrion isn't a stretch. That and the death of his wife, who was the only person he had any particular warmth towards, although he holds Jamie in high esteem.

Good points. I always liked the interaction between Tywin and Arya Stark (when she served as his cup-bearer). He almost seemed...fatherly. I could see that Tywin had some good and honorable qualities deep down inside; however, the circumstances of his life probably made him into a ruthless and cold man. I suspect that his wife's death hit him particularly hard and made much of his kindness disappear. I could see a younger Lord Tywin probably respecting Lord Ned Stark (or, more particularly, Ned's father) out of reverence for his honor, working-lord knowledge and strength of command. All of that probably changed with the death of Lady Joanna Lannister as well as the wayward paths taken by Cersi and Jaime. Unfortunately, Tyrion (at least in the eyes of Tywin and Cersi) seemed to be the reminder of the family's weaknesses.

"Winter is Coming" is an all encompassing term for "the hard times are coming". It came from a time where there were years long winters and conditions could not be less forgiving. The Starks understood this and took "Winter is coming" as their words to remind them to not get caught up in the nonsense the southern houses did and to prepare for the lean years.

Leaving behind butchered bodies of men and horses was an old tactic used by retreating medieval forces, especially when abandoning a fortified location. The rot would allow diseases to spread among the ranks of the enemy making their advancement a pyrrhic victory.

Yeah, it was utilised for many reasons. You can’t afford to leave slaves/men for your enemies, it instills terror and again is unhygienic. But I doubt Tywin is concerned about them holding in Harrenhall, it’s like it’s the removing any men from the northern army before they leave.

Also the actress that plays Cersi (Lina Heday) and the actor that plays Bronn (Jerome Flynn) used to date back in the day and had a really bad break up & they refuse to work together so every scene that they are suppose to be in together it's a actually the actor's stunt double.

7:49 This is just a very small example of what makes GoT so special. That's just a small scene where Davos is found by some men who are on his side. Not very spectactular in itself and it could be done off screen and probably would be in other shows. But this show manages to get a lot of tension out of it. And there are many other scenes like this. This is where the show is different from most other shows. At this point into it, you have seen enough to know nobody is safe. You are invested in the characters (because of the great actors and writing) and while the viewer is sitting safely in front of his screen, he feels real danger, real emotions.
Everything bad that happens to good characters may sometimes be hard to watch and you often wish that wouldn't happen, but without that, the show would not be the same. It sets the bar for the viewers expectation of all that could happen. It really is what makes everything, even small scenes like this, so much more intense. It gives you fear but also relieve and real happiness when good things happen. Everything "bad" that happens amplifies and intensifies everything else far beyond that moment itself.

The city would have fallen way before Tywin and the Tyrell army ever arived if it hadn't been for Tyrion, and still Tywin can't show any pride or appreciation for his son. UGH. I love that you guys remembered Ser Barristan because so many reactors forget him. You’re really great with names! Tywin is a smart man, I always figured he had some sort of idea about Jaime and Cersei and I also feel like it’s not very practical of him to solely care that Tyrion’s a dwarf, another commenter explained other reasons. Tywin is pretty hardcore, I don’t think the show explains everything he’s done to make the Lannister name so intimidating but the House was near collapse and Tywin saved it, he thinks Tyrion is out to destroy it and is holding on to hope that Jaime (his pride and joy) will return. Margaery Tyrell is famed for her beauty as perhaps the most beautiful maiden in the seven kingdoms and on top of House Tyrell is very politically astute and wealthy. I always thought it was funny to see a monster like Joffrey blown away by Margaery in this episode because it shows he’s really still just a boy, he just has way too much power. Oh yeah and like the other commenters say, always keep subtitles on for Daenerys scenes because there is a lot of foreign language this season.

Fun fact - the scene around 7:20-7:25 (when Bronn is about to fight the Kingsguards outside Tyrion's door just as Cersei walks out) is the only scene in the entire series where you'll see Bronn & Cersei together on screen. The reason for this is because the actors (Jerome Flynn and Lena Headey) who play those characters are not allowed to be in the same room. Evidently, they used to be a couple, and they had a bad breakup which resulted in them not being cordial to each other during filming. The producers of the show have gone to great lengths to ensure that they are kept apart, but apparently this scene was an exception.

10:42 This is why I love Tyrion and why this is such a good moment. After Tyrion gets shamed into oblivion by his dad, Tywin decides to throw yet one more stab in with the line “the next whore I find in your bed I’ll hang.” But before he can finish and right when Tyrion hears “whore” he knows his father so well and has heard this so many times that he just nods and walks about mid-sentence. Such a great scene and I remember feeling so bad for Tyrion.

Jorah is afraid of Selmy's presence because Selmy was the Lord Commander of the Kingdguard to King Robert. And typically people with that position were on the King's Small Council. And if that's the case Selmy would have likely known about Jorah spying for Robert on Danny.
However, what Jorah doesn't know is that because Selmy was Kingsguard to the Mad King that Robert overthrew, he was not allowed presence in the Small Council. However, his courage and honour were so legendary, he was not relieved of his duties as Kingsguard.
