When you get to the end, instead of the vet interviews each episode like BoB and Pac had. They just made a companion documentary called the bloody hundredth to accompany the show. They explain a lot but people unfamiliar this is a very foreign facet of the war and the doc helps explain what the show couldn't. Dropping in the channel is a longevity thing as well as safety, the payload being several 1000 lbs, that's a lot of weight for a damaged plane to haul back, plus as you mentioned attempting to land with that load.
The series is actually based off 2 books, 1 being the Donald L Miller book of the same name of the show and (I'll leave the author's name out to avoid spoilers) A Wing and a Prayer: The Bloody 100th Bomb Group of the Us Eighth Air Force in Action Over Europe in World War II.
Remember Day of Days from BoB? The scene where they are receiving AA prior to jumping? Add in fighter attacks AND having to survive 25 of these missions.
Can’t land with the bombs in case they crash. If they crash landed and the payload went off, it would crater the runway and put the whole base out of action. In addition the lack of bomb weight improves fuel efficiency and speed.
Please stick with this such an awesome show
Oh we are!! Love it so much!!

Seriously!! This is so intense!! I can't fathom how these men found the strength to do this over and over again. So humbling.

All of this makes so much sense. We hadn't even thought about the run way and how that would impact the whole base.
