You know what's crazier than the Saka thing. Zealands weak excuses for not having a good background.
Now I don't wanna he to correct the background anymore i got already used to it now i am attached to Zealand's weird background
As long as Pepe the frog is hanging out, I'll give Z a free pass! 😂🐸
Who cares about a football commentators background

In the UK, Journalism is not about balance or responsible journalism, it's about ramming as many puns and as much alliteration as you can into your headline over the top of images that spark a reaction in your audience.
That’s any journalism that has to compete on a market
When we win, Kane or Bellingham is the main man, but when we lose, Saka is the main man.
Isn't Bellingham black to or am I missing something?
@@tomekkaminski2677 You have a terrible mindset. Saka is the main man for loses now, because Harry Maguire is not playing. Stop putting so much of your thoughts on skin color.
@@tomekkaminski2677its hard to explain but Bellingham is seen as a different kind of black
@@Bornevalesh
To be fair, a lot of the reason Saka is the scapegoat is because he is black. Do you not remember the racist abuse after the Italy penalty shootout that Saka, Rashford and Sancho got? Harry Maguire has never been the scapegoat for England as he always performs for them
@@scottwalker4619 Ofcourse we have a lot of human trash in our world that unloaded their bullsh*t on the players after that game. But please stop seeing racism everywhere.... that is also very racist. It would be way better to just send stuff like that (insults or threats) to the authorities and let them handle it without giving racist idiots any attention.
Also Harry Maguire was made into a meme... everyone in europe was laughing at how bad he is. Some went even further and added that he is plain stupid. That is in fact harassment. ;)
I think you're giving them too much grace, English media has a history of articles like this, blaming black players for the inadequacies of the team as a whole. As someone said, those players are English when they win and Black when they lose. This is not the first time and it wont be the last.
Yeah it's really bad and sadly not only the english media that does this stuff. i remember watching a documentary/essay on Ozil who faced the same problems being German when they won and Turkish when they lost. Or how people in general joke about France's team being "not French" because a lot of the players are black, which isnt how nationality works. Racism is so fucking stupid
100% this is exactly what I’m thinking. It’s a bit silly to ask for more evidence before calling this out when there is plenty examples in just the last Euros of this
Copy and paste for the French team as well.
@@ChineseKiwiwhat's funny about that is most of them are black 😂
English French and German media do this a lot. When they win they give credit to the one good white player but if they lose all hell breaks out on black players😢
Also, 19 y/o Mainoo also got a lot of stick for ... well, nothing.
Interesting that the telegraph singled him out despite declan rice still being in the oppos half by the time the iceland scored and making no effort to get back (unlike mainoo). Wonder what the difference is between them...
what's even worse he had nothing to do with the goal conceded and overall was one of the few ones that had a good game.
@@pavlevasilev2968 Exactly. The r*cism is so blatant it's quite sad.
I don't get it, so help me to understand. When a black players gets stick, it's white people being racist. But when Maguire gets more stick than anyone, what is it exactly?
When Beckham gets Effigies of him burned, what is it exactly? If England burned effigies of Saka, you'd be the first to scream racism right? So what is it when it happens to white people? Acceptable? because they have white skin?
Just trying to understand the logic of you people

It's sad because it makes all you lads look bad when not even half of you are like that
Still, over a million sell every day and even more people agree with what these rags write than buy them.
England is a deeply racist nation given it's always black footballers getting the blame for the manager's appalling lack of tactical nous and inability to pick a functioning midfield.
Englishman here. Did a journalism degree, ended up hating it because of how much the culture war was seeping into every little thing and got completely dejected with it all. I think if I’d had a professor like Z I would have finished it.
As as communist, the culture war is the most liberal of BS distraction tactics from the real issues
Cultuur war stuff is in journalism degrees?
That's weird.
Saka is the Premier League version of Vinicius in La Liga. Two very talented, humble, and overall nice guys that somehow became the main targets of sports media and haters.
Vini is an instigator 100%, he deserves all the trash talking that comes his way. And I say this as a Madrid Fan.
Saka on the other hand, seems like a guy who actually tries to play well, and doesn’t attack or trash talk opposing fans, so I never understood why so many people blame him. Is it because he’s a foreigner so his loyalty and pride is always in question?
Vini is a mega-instigator who gets away with murder
im not watching laliga but when vini plays in cl he legit deserves a red card in half of his games. This creature perma dives and then provokes the enemy team after. If you do this on bayern and not madrid youre getting 3 red cards 1 cl season
Wouldn't exactly call Vini Jr. humble but your point still stands.
Neither Saka nor Vini Jr. deserve the hate they are often getting.
Surely you’re trolling, Saka and Vinicius are completely different
You're completely missing the point of the criticism of using Saka as the scapegoat for defeat. Hardly anyone believes it is outright racism deciding this. The issue is that its a strong signal of unconscious bias which is why Saka is the posterboy for defeat where these journalists somehow decide they'll put a black player forward to be the face of a loss to incite a reaction and clicks.
In the UK, we had this same issue at the last Euros when Raheem Sterling scored England's first three goals at the competition. They used pictures of Harry Kane in all the newspapers - which led to quite a few complaints about why a black man's success for England could not be used to celebrate the success of the England team.
If you speak to black people in the UK, you'll hear the saying - "you're British when you do well in life, but you're black when you fail at something". It came across as a little naive from you that you believe they would dedicate similar picture space of Saka in England's wins/successes going forward but I recommend you read up on unconscious biases in the media
He has a masters in journalism. I think he is aware.

@@classonbread5757 yeah I heard him mention that. It felt like a cop out saying only if there is more evidence will I call this out… like the whole point of the controversy is that people are highlighting this issue BEFORE it becomes a bigger deal during the tournament itself.
Also very strange that with a masters degree in journalism yet he was either uncomfortable or unable to address how potential unconscious biases that might be the real problem here and acknowledge that they could cause actual harm

Same thing for every non-english, British sportsman and woman whenever they win or lose in English media. Andy Murray is the one springing to my mind most prominently but to say this doesn't happen *ALL THE TIME* is just a gross misrepresentation of the truth.
The agenda against Saka is still insane, people will find a way to hate on him for everything when he's consistently one of the best players in the prem and for England
Saying you don’t think it is as nefarious as that really underestimates our gutter press here in the UK, especially during a General Election campaign where half of the parties are trying to play a game of who can say the most racist thing and get away with it, being backed by the same press outlets you mention in this video.

it's started with Kobbie Mainoo aswell. "Expect Gallagher to return". funny thing is, he had an average game, no one was better, at least half the team played worse, and the goal was hardly his fault
Mixed race Londoner (and Gunner) here, that story you told about what your black friend said was exactly my same reaction except before Saka missed I was just praying he didn't purely for that reason. It's insane that my instinct and first thoughts during an international major are about the social implications after an event like that but such is the state of us 😕
Even as a Chelsea fan ( I'm half black too) I was screaming through the tv at the nonce coach who decided to make the 19 year old black kid take the last penalty. It could have ruined his career knowing what the media is like 😢
It very nearly did. Players have dropped off for much less.
Remember that Argentina lost to Saudi in their first game of the World Cup: every game thereafter was a must win. And they won.
All i am saying , they could have put kane in there
I’d beg to differ, Kane is a much bigger player for England than Saka. Foden is a bigger media player for England especially after the season he had.
I was at the match and everyone loved saka. Everyone wanted him to start before the match started. My throat is still sour from all the shouting we was doing for him to be brought on. Other youtubers having poor sound balancing that their audio is too high even on the lowest setting is not the fault of Zealand. Having the audio set so that it's not too loud at the lowest volumes like Zealand does, is right.
@@deanc6664 Look, I agree to the point that I would much rather have a stream be overly quiet than overly loud, but given that the peak of these streams is something like -12dB, I think the audio can survive a boost in the microphone gain levels. We're not at danger of peaking out

I feel like the picture of him lying on the ground also just sums up the loss as a whole
a very perceptive analysis on Baka, thank you. England are stacked with immense talent and only Southgate will prevent them from winning the Euros.
The same with Spain. They lost one game and went on to win the 2010 World Cup.

I partially agree with Zealand here, I think it's not necessarily because of Saka's skin tone that he has been so prominent, but I think that's why in the Euro elimination he had so much relevance and was declared a villain. Therefore, the press took advantage of this image of him created years ago and for reasons that are not the noblest it gained such relevance. Completely changing the context, but for me it's the equivalent of using the word denigrate, which has a racist origin, but people use it without knowing the context. Anyway, this is the opinion of a Brazilian who has seen similar cases in South America.
The original comment in portuguese.

I came here for 2 things - to eat hot chip and bully Zealand about his background - and I'm all out of hot chip.
pealandism throwing on this background
Really well measured take - it definitely wasn't conscious racism but it sure as hell reflects the decisions of a lot of people who have subconscious biases and have never had to actively consider racism as a thing that affects their own lives.
The ultimate test is if Saka scores a goal and England win, then is he shown in the headlines? If not then there is bias at play, which includes race.
If that background isn't fixed soon dont be surprised if the viewership drops by half, not because we dont want to watch but because we will perish.
So... have you gone for a RUN yet today Zealand?

They wont use Southgate to associate with failure because the general public already associate him with failure, they're trying to spin the narrative away from the 'southgate out' that's been going on for 2-3 years.
They're using Saka because of all the hype behind him.
They should have used Palmer or Walker since they were both completely useless in attack, they offered very little but stalling and recycling the ball and rarely found a way to break through collectively on the right. The wasted greedy shots by Palmer.
The best thing Palmer did was the two moments he drifted to the left to link up with Gordon.
But palmer wouldn't bring in those views. Saka replaced him and took over that position that had next to no impact for the majority of the game, so they use him.
The world of journalism is very cruel and they're only in it for themselves. All about the clicks and attracting eyes to articles, it doesn't matter how they get there.
Same thing happens in Mexico, when we loose they blame Santi Giménez but when we win anybody else gets placed in the cover of the image or news article
I think you're missing another part of this. Arsenal is a big part of Saka's life. And a lot, I mean a lot, of people hate Arsenal. So it might be racism, as that's a thing in soccer, it might also be tribalism as Arsenal are one of the most hated clubs in the Premier League. But thankfully Saka is one of the most stand up guys in the world and he's been through all of this and more and keeps being the star boy he is.
Arsenal haters are gonna hate.
There’s been a huge trend to hate on Arsenal over the last year or so in general. Saka like you said is one of the faces of the England team as well as the face of Arsenal. So that’s what going to get them clicks.
Arsenal is truly the least salient aspect of this. You lot have a victim complex.

Z, you've done videos on bias and racism in sports journalism. You know what the papers are doing, and if you don't might be time to question your media literacy or your own biases towards giving the benefit of the doubt to people in the profession. This video is WAY too generous to the British media, because they do this EVERY TIME without fail. Saka and the other black players (notice Sterling was the big scapegoat and "Southgates favorite that shouldn't be there before Saka rose to prominence) for the English national team are ALWAYS scapegoats for when England loses. It's always the loudest thing behind the continual chants to bin off Southgate.
