I like your style. Laid back, not panicky and above all, thorough. VERY good video.
Incidental grounding versus dedicated grounding. You did a great full tune up on that tractor Bob.
I got 15 riding mowers here. All need some TLC. Fixing them, keeps my sanity in check.
Mine make me nuts.
Very good video. I like your style. Laid back and thorough. Not one minute wasted.
You did some good troubleshooting on the electrical system of that unit. Nice job overall too!
You are very good at explaining why and what you are checking, the camera angles are also good, the lighting especially when showing a procedure in a darkened area are difficult to see for a newby. Thanks for taking your time to educate us!
This was a comprehensive tutorial...excellent job! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wish there were more small engine shops like yours around, most don't know how to troubleshoot a problem. That was sure a dull set of blades...never seen them worn to 90º!
Excellent philosophy and attitude about your business and this will bring return customers. Electrical problems are difficult for me but you knew exactly how to attack this unit. Very informative and great video. Thanks for sharing.
one click = solenoid, several clicks = low batt voltage
Battery is fully charged (at rest), at 12.75 volts. Stator should be charging at 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Need to check rectifier/voltage regulator, ground, and contact connections.
Just about every mower blade I see from customers is sharpened incorrectly. Way to short and steep an angle, with no sharpening on back of blade either.
I use "High Mileage" oil in older engines, straight 30W

Great video. I just installed a new solenoid myself. Didn't even think of the new solenoid being bad. I was frustrated and left it alone for the day. I'll have to check the new solenoid. The old solenoid was definitely bad.
Really enjoyed your process sir. Subscribed.
Very thorough nice work! It’s the little things that go a long way
It sure is!
The stator over charging the battery like that is a problem. It will kill the battery over time. Just long enough for the battery to run out of warrantee, most likely.
Enjoyed your video, especially the troubleshooting portion. I have a 2008 Craftsman that I had to replace the 19hp engine for $700 installed, so I hope I made the right decision on that. They said that 19HP Briggs Engine was a bad one. I don't know. I thought I changed the oil and filter as required. I got a few good tips from you, thanks for that. You cameraman was on target too. HA!
compression release goes in those engines.
Thanks for the video. Nice job! Topic for your next vlog....proper charging voltage and what causes overcharging.
Thanks for the idea!
Good maintenance walk through. You've probably resolved this by now but 2 clues: starter not activating and battery not charging point directly at solenoid. Over charging I would suspect voltage regulator especially if it's an old style mechanical unit. 15 volts will boil the battery. For excessive smoking I would suspect valve and sticking ring issues from sitting off season and today's crappy gas. I add a tablespoon or so of ATF to the crankcase Originally, I added the ATF for remediation on a unit that was problematic with gumming valves. Now I add it to all. I run 10/30 full syn the last 10 or so years.
+1, Needs the regulator changed out
It has been awhile but here today supporting with full view & 👍 #252. Nice work on this mower & video. Stay safe, Joe Z
NIce video. check the voltage regulator, I had some (mostly Kohler) that were not grounded properly. Might cause high voltage. Thanks for great video's.
As for the charging cycle, it might have been crossed over the lighting circuit uses a higher voltage but on some it's even AC non-rectified ... Check the wires...
I hope there is a section about the safety circuit killing the magneto when the brake is released
I love spark plug socket, gotta get one! Nice!
You should!
Hey great fix on the solenoid. What model is the Milwaukee impact? My Dewalt works but its too big, would like to get a Milwauikee. That looks like 3/8" drive. Great video. And yea that charging system is high. I look for 14.5, 17 volts could be what caused the battery to need a change. Maybe its a bad regulator. Had one go on my Wheel Horse.
Excellent video. Thank you ❤️
Quick suggestion: to remove a broken fitting from a hose, put a screw in it and pull it out.
Nice work Bob. My Exmark ended up needing an ignition switch thats what was causing my battery not to charge correctly. I had already checked everything on the charging system i knew to check. Hope you and the family had a great Thanksgiving. Have a great weekend. God Bless!
Good you got the Exmark squared away. We had a nice just at home Thanksgiving.
@@doublewide6 Yea we need it in the middle of leaf season. I was surprised at what the problem was. Kawasaki engines now recommends 20w/50 synthetic blend motor oil for their engines and Briggs recommends 10w/30 blend on there commercial vanguard efi engines with 820cc block or its something like that. We did the same thing just hung around the home yesterday and today. Keep up the great videos
Hoping you can help me here. Bought a craftsman mower off friend. Ran fine but rough. Brought home, removed the mower deck to install the snow plow attachment. When I removed the deck I thought it easier to remove the blade engagement cable from under the hood where it connects to the engagement arm. The thinking was that it seemed easier that removing the cable and spring where it attaches to the mower deck.
Long story short, did full tune-up (oil, spark plug, air filter, replaced fuse - though the old one had no break, etc.)
Problem: sit on seat, engage parking brake, turn key.... no click, no sound at all. Brand new battery tested with multi-meter.
Haven't tried installing the mower deck back in and installing the engagement cable but going from working to nothing is disturbing.
Is the clutch/blade engagement cable have some safety sensor or something that tells the engine not to start if that is not installed. Basically the blade engagement arm is free-floating.
I want to reinstall the mower deck and cable to test but just haven't had time to do it yet. Thought your experience might be able to provide me some insight.
Thank you!😊
Top job. Cheers for the info
Any time!
very nicely done . Bruce sent me over . Thanks
Thanks for coming
Good video. Same problem mine had. Thanks
Glad it helped
Great work Bob . See you on the 19TH .
Ok looking forward to it.
Will be good.
Good job.
So the 10w30 break in oil is straight oil not a synthetic blend oil?
Thanks for sharing
Is the little wires back wards
Seen that a lot from diy
great tune up service. I would service this thing til I die. No sense in buying a new one that has bad quality.
very nice video.
Nice work. Is it possible the stator has regulator inline that is bad? Or are they built in? Thanks
I'm not sure on this model I am going to take a look tomorrow at it.
Voltage regulator is wacked! Probably what caused the original problem. 14.5 never more than 14.75 is max. That thing is cooking the battery.
Surprised you didn't add a shutoff valve. Future video of engine with dirty float needle and crankcase full of fuel?
Good job
Nice video,is valve adjustment included in your tuneup.
No not unless there is a valve related problem.
Left front wheel looked wobbly. How's the steering linkage look?
seemed fine
That long spark plug socket, I've only seen them in a Ford Triton v8 sparkplug thread repair kit, nice job getting one, the kit is like 399.99..... I see you found one cheaper, but I bet it's not as strong.
It should do the trick.
So if the carburetor is gravity fed you should use a screen filter and a cartridge type if it has a fuel pump? Is it a supply issue?
yes
I generally thought you went by micron size. Lower for pump higher for gravity. Briggs has 75 white pan style screen for pump and red 150 for gravity.
good video
What size is that motor please and it does not look like it has a fuel pump am I correct I got a machine with something missing in between the gas line and gas line and when I look it up it has a Chevy style fuel pump with the arm that runs on the cam. But it looks like yours is just a gravity feed. Thank you for any help.
That tool you have on your garden hose I love it to bad you live in another state I need your help with my powr Kraft mower it's been acting up it's not like want it do see you later young man
That's the worst fuel filter you can put on the damn lawn mower
Why didn’t you grease the wheels ? They need grease also.
Degreaser over your grass?
And?
need help please. have 1985 craftsman GT 18 twin. 917.255910. trying to get ammeter to work. i think its called an induction ammeter. took it out of dash and moved magnet behind it and it goes right and left. has 30 amp fuse, its good. wire wraps around back of ammeter, one side goes to fuse the other goes into back of key switch. any ideas on how to diagnose it to check it ? still have book for it. part # for ammeter is 105791X. let me know if you need any further info. fyi--had original engine replaced with I/C 18 hp v-twin. sears did all work under warranty .back in the 80's, around 89' i believe. just went through mower front to back. rebuilt carb. everything works fine now, except ammeter.
Just because it's a new switch ,doesn't mean that it's a Gooden one. I got a new coil a few years ago ,and it was a bad coil
2 immediate thoughts: use a spray bottle instead of a brush, and don't do it on that good looking lawn.
The spray bottles clog up over time unless you rinse it out after each use.
@@doublewide6Yeah, I know. Even if it is only soap that's in it. Some I've been able to find in stores empty new have been better. Of course, it has a lot to do with what's in it. How about a pump up garden sprayer?
Looks like it needs a new regulator old buddy. I would definitely replace it, 16V is way too high.
Thanks I will look into it.
@@doublewide6 Yes sir, thanks for all the great videos!
No regulator i expect. Probably the low amp dual with the inline diode for charging side and ac line for the lights
@@kenhilson786 Good point Ken, either way 16 or 17 volts to the battery will lead to future issues. Whether it be an inline diode, or the diodes inside a regulator, the end result is the same.
@@Savage-lx5yj briggs actually markets some device to increase the amps of the dual. I think it does so by reducing the voltage. Not sure if they call it a regulator. Shown on their alternator page. I actually bought adjustable regulator from china to experiment with on the dual but haven't done it yet.
I need wireing colors to all switches on craftsman rider
I have that same mower. Only mine is falling apart. Everything that was glued on is no longer, headlight lens fell off and ran over and floorboard mats fell off. Still runs but looks horrible.
Sorry I tried to watch your video I do this for a living no powerwasher handheld blower looks like u make enough video off someone else's content just saying !!¡!!!!!!!!!!
