Hey Mustie thanks for all you do - I have learned so much by watching your channel. I've made close to $20,000 in the last three years flipping lawn equipment and when I get stuck on an issue there is almost always a video you have done that has covered it. I also appreciate that your channel is so simple. No music, no intro/outro, no yelling and over excited tone. Just me and you in the garage.

I totally concur, I am so tired of intro/outros, people telling me to sub and thumbs, and ring that bell. It reminds me of canned laughter and the applause lights on, like it had a control switch, on stupid TV shows. And some of those UA-cam celebs with millions of views are more like infomercials like flex seal. Teryl, Donnyboy, the motor chick, the beer buy, and other small motor geeks are kewl, but Derick rules.

Wow what a list of finds for connections and issues.
They unplugged but swapped when reconnecting.
Maybe some marking paint both on a switch and it's connector will prevent swapping of those next time.
I had one like this and most of what you found was similar but worse on yours. Too many possible causes makes people give up, then they add causes.
There's no book for ease of diag.
The schematics are a chore to learn versus automotive.
What I had to do was eliminate everything, and just hook up what the customer agreed to have for safeties.
We sat and reasoned it out several times, over a week.
I had a bag of wires and connectors left afterwards.
    Then our magneto went open.
So, a water damaged ign switch, rewiring to make the new one fit, eliminating spaghetti, and the magneto, then belts, and a mower deck refurb.
    Wow, I could had a V8.
All because it sat in the weather.
It took over a month with hours researching and some travel.
Now we see the need for the bottle opener on the keychain.
You are tenacious in your diagnosis.
    I admire that about you.

In the U.K. I had my lawnmower at six ( some called ) service centres ,none could fix it . A friend said a engineer in north Scotland was the best in the business ( by far) phoned him , but it on the bus parcel service . I phoned the guy three days later and he said “the mowers repaired and but on the bus back” , 4 years on and it’s still going strong . The guys the small tool and mower wizard and I’ve used him to fix a few petrol and electrical tools and it’s a excellent and not expensive service by someone that knows his stuff.

Many of us would simply bypass all that safety stuff, and run directly to essential circuits. I suspected the starter relay at first, easy to check. But all that safety ctap can drive you nuts, just chuck it, and make it like the 50s. What's next, OBD2 computer controlled? I van see it now, Moustie1 connecting his OBD2 screen scanner to a connector under the steering wheel to check a garden tractor for errors? The title of this video should be, "Why Dave Watches Mustie1 Videos". This was so needed. I have a John Deere LX 188 that I inherited. I cleaned the carburetor but must have made the float stick. I didn't know what was wrong because it was belching gas out the overflow. I let it set for a year or 2. After watching your videos for a while I learned about the float sticking. Then I was out tinkering with it one day and decided to change the ink looking oil and start messing with it again but the drain plug was so tight I busted off the whole filler thing from the engine. So I ordered a new one and one of the bolts is stripped out that holds it on. So now it leaks oil. I have to come up with a solution for that.
So a while back I bought some parts and decided to try to get it going again, and didn't bother putting oil in it because I wasn't going to run it and wanted to make sure it had spark. Well, it doesn't. Now I know why. The oil pressure sensor knows there's no oil and cuts off the spark. Right? So I need to get the oil drip stopped and put oil in it and then crank it over for spark.

Well done. Excellent diagnosis. The double brake interlock feels to be overly complicated.
A lot of connections were loose. Makes me wonder if the original problem was just a loose connection.

Electrical problems are always the hardest to track down. I think in this case, looking up a wiring diagram or the manual would have been helpful to save some time in troubleshooting. Obviously it is useful to understand the troubleshooting process but I'm guessing most people just want to get things running again ASAP. Thanks for the video and love seeing you diagnose small engines

    • @umajunkcollector

A schemy helps, but doesn't determine failed switches, relays, or bad wiring. Like here, everything ""looked"" OK, but a probe or DMM in experienced skilled hands can really get the job done. Two other guys may have used schematics, but failed to find the fault. First rule to troubleshoot electric problems is to check for good connections and contacts, like fuses, wiring, and switches. But all that safety crap can be tricky, like here.

@ MrBigNoze You obviously either didnt watch the whole vid or pay attention, or both...as in other vids Mustie makes it quite clear using manuals etc takes the troubleshooting out of it, and thats what its all about, thats what makes these vids what they are ...using his own skills to find the problem...use a manual and the vids will be a few mins long and boring..

Most of mine are the older before Toro versions and much easier to work on. I have stayed away from those newer versions for just the reasons you showed in this video. @@lwilton I've been thinking that there are A LOT more videos generally about people working on old, salvage equipment. It's pretty obvious to me that we're heading quickly into times where human-energy, the kind that goes in to fixing, repairing, salvaging, rebuilding, etc., is of more value than the 'consumer-energy' of buying a new one and throwing out the old one. I welcome this trend!

Sir, today I have to thank you for your mechanical lessons. I just repaired my chainsaw which on first sight only needed a new primer bulb. On second sight there was no spark, making me believe the coil was dead after my multimeter had no readings when measuring the way you taught us. It was just a missing contact between the spark plug connector and the wire. So thank you for saving my chainsaw.
    Greetings from Germany

$150.00 PER HOUR IF YOU HELP.
$300.00 PER HOUR IF YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE HAS SCREWED WITH IT BEFORE, TRYING TO FIX IT.

Awesome troubleshooting! Impressive ! When I was fresh out of school I worked in highway construction , as a Mechanics Helper/ Welder Repair. One night a Briggs Stratton powered lighting system for night construction operation quit running. My Boss, assigned another mechanic to get it going. 4 hours later, no progress he cursed and a second mechanic waded in . Another hour and still nothing. They stood there ready to give up when my Boss stopped and said two highly paid Heavy Equipment mechanics several hours and nothing ? He told me grab a few tools and let’s have a look. We cleaned the points, cleaned out the carb bowl, installed a new plug, second pull it fired, time was maybe half an hour . Lesson, go to basic fuel air spark.

I have one suggestion though; your meter has the ability to put out a chime when you meter out switches. If you hit the DC/AC button until the last symbol beside the button appears on the display, it will activate that feature. I use all the time when I don't have the ability to look at the screen.
