The MiG-21 may have a chance to shoot it down with missiles, but even then, it's iffy. If the F-5E can get close enough for the dogfight, it's over for the MiG. So, what have we learned?: Know your place, MiG-21s. Best to keep the F-5E at arms length to avoid the deadly dogfight you can't win.

I am a firm believer in the idea of the f-5 being the hard counter to the mig 21. Mig 21 has top speed, but if the f-5 plays it right, there isn't much the mig can do
F5e is so easy I won a 1v3 the other day, the planes i was going against had terrible energy retention I was going against a MiG 21, ja 37, and f4 I just stayed at above 0.9 Mach where you lose like no speed in ten f5e and made them turn slowly making them lose their energy where I picked them off one by one
I play a lot with both the F5C and Mig-21SMT, in conclusion the mig is more of an interceptor being very good at sneaking behind you and taking you out but not good turn fighting. F5 out turns most things and has super good guns but 2 bad missiles

On the mig-21 you could say use the missles but rear aspect R-60 are so flare absorbing that all you need to do is pop 1 flare and it’s gone, it’s radar missle are also bad on the mig 21, I also play war thunder and I am max level who plays top tier a lot soo this would not work. That’s why the mig-21 MF/SMT is at battle rating 10.3 while the F-5E is 10.7.
The nose authority you have with delta wings is insane unfortunately they shit out all their speed so fast tho. The f-5 holds energy way better so in a sustained dogfight they have the advantage

I really don’t see how range, max altitude, radar and popularity matter for these planes in War Thunder. Size also doesn’t matter all that much. I also have no clue how F-5E wins the armament section, since the GSh-23L is way better than the colts and the MiG-21 has better missiles as well as more of them than the F-5. Edit: I guess the armament choice could be because of the F-5Es air-to-ground weaponry, and that would make sense. For air-to-air operations however, the MiG-21 is better armed no question.
In a dogfight, mig-29 wins. In a head on, it’s a 50/50, depends on the pilots (the r27er is technically better than the aim-7m but I feel like the aim-7m tracks better idk tho) at longer ranges tho, f14b stomps. The f14b also has a v different play style, that I like to call cleanup crew. What I see people do is go up w a full aim-54 load out (which doesn’t take very long it’s engines are insane) then drop all their aim-54’s on people, rtb and bring 7m’s and 9l’s to kind of clean up what’s left. The mig-29 just kind of rushes in and says “r-27er go brrr”
An interesting fact, all MiG-21s have incredible stability, it is impossible to throw them into a tailspin, even at extreme angles of attack they continue to maneuver, most likely this is due to its delta wing, Most likely the physics engine of the game simply does not understand how to work with this type of wing. From this it turns out that the instructor allows you to fly with the mouse in the same way as with full control. I'm serious, on the mouse he maneuvers in the same way as in simulator battles with full control.
Migs are pretty much all my food in F-5E they lose all their speed in a turn or two and it is especially bad when they dont have flares they just get smacked by an aim9e
