Fun Fact: The Reason why Daisy was made into a playable character in Wonder was because one of the developer's daughters at home would often fight over who gets to play as Peach in 3D World. They invited her to this adventure to settle the girls' princess quarrel.
I just think that's funny. And Cute.
Who asked?
@@megastarwarsrocks99I asked
That’s adorable!
And here I thought they actually cared about Daisy as a character for a second.
@@REPLA_ACE😂 that was too good.
Yes, Baldur's Gate 3 really is a once in a decade kind of game. Crazy it is also a $60 no strings attached, no shops, no passes, no DLC, just one huge and complete game.
That's exactly what everyone wants from a video game. A game with no DLC, Subscriptions, a completed game, no pay to win, nothing remotely to that. It should come as a game all others should look up to, to see what can be accomplished when you don't add subscriptions, battle passes, pay to win, and all the other bullshit.
Honestly would be willing to pay more to encourage games like it
Well dlc is fine as long as it's an expansion and not just carved out base content.
@@darthsnarfThe Octo EXPANSION:

I don’t think it’s mentioned in the video, but my goodness Hi-Fi Rush is such an amazing game with fantastic style, actually fun rhythm based combat, a lovable cast of characters, a good story, and a banging soundtrack. Definitely a contender for goty for me
Hi-Fi Rush is peak, hoping for a sequel or dlc eventually
@@siIver10 Same. 12 hours of gameplay just isn’t enough for me

I just commented that, too, but I’m guessing he didn’t have a means to play it, like with Pizza Tower.

This was definitely one of the best years for games, especially for Nintendo. Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, all some of the best titles they've put out in recent years. And I think 2024 will be at least just as good, especially if they release their new console this year.

How dare Schaff dismiss Bae'Zel this way, she's amazing once you get past her shell
I gotta admit, I didn't like Lae'zel at first, Shadowheart's my waifu forever, but I did warm a lot to her after doing her personal quest.
I think I relate to her character drive to find worth in this world made it relatable to me as I also went to something similar as I approached my thirties.
After I've made my Paladin of Selune playthrough, I might make another game as a bard, being the Starlord to her Gamora if you know what I mean.
I’m playing in the first act as a Dwarf Paladin, and am making my relationship with Lae’zel more like a buddycop dynamic. We just work off each other very well.
I love how Breath of the Wild and 1-2-Switch took the same amount of time to get a sequel that's so funny!
Same quality as well
@@TheBigGlober68I sense an argument approaching
@@TheBigGlober68There's not a pipe bomb in your mail at all
@@TheBigGlober68 It's unfortunate that one of them doesn't work nearly as well as a livestream game as you would expect from its format, and instead requires everyone to be in the same room to work optimally.
I am, of course, talking about Tears of the Kingdom.
Spider Man 2 also
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is probably the most hyped I’ve been for a game in a while, especially since it’s the first 2D game in the series to release after a long time.
i JUST got a copy of this game, and as soon as i come home, this video comes out
I grew up on the DS version of New super so I was stoked to play it, played through it and it was amazing!
Best 2D game imo, only super Mario world compares
@@b1gturtleFair, though IMO I enjoyed SMB3 way more the World. I just liked how much fast-paced and rewarding it was to blaze through the levels. World felt a lot slower in comparison, and I personally wasn’t happy that they took away so many of the power ups from SMB3
and the first in nearly 20 years (holy shit) to not be a "New" title
The year 2023 was an absolute golden year for video games, from AAAs to indies, some of these games are going to be remembered for years to come.
I love pepperoni pizza
Also for me a pretty okay year with of course the games Schafrillas mentioned and also with really bad games like Kong, The Day Before, Redfall, Gollum, Forspoken.
@@AisarShamsul how does the release of some awful games no one was excited for in the first place have ANY EFFECT AT ALL on how good a year was for gaming??? literally all that matters is how much good/great new stuff there was to enjoy…
Gotta respect Schaff for consistently bringing up sonic whenever he does these top 10 movie/game of the year lists.
Superstars was kinda mid for the most part.
I’m so glad that this year pikmin as a series was finally able to reach the mainstream appeal it always had deserved with pikmin 4
Even though pikmin 3 deluxe is a better game in my opinion, I thought pikmin 4 was a brilliant game. Unfortunately no mission mode and worse graphics mean 3 is better, but 4 blows any other game I played from 2023 out of the water
@@Zach90888 worse graphics? youre kidding right? pikmin 4 is easily one of the best looking games on switch
Pikmin 4 is too cartoony looking to beat out 3 in graphics for me.
@@B0ssguyit is, but imo PIKMIN 3 deluxe looks a lot better. Idk I guess I prefer the less cartoony artstyle
@@Mexikuma Hot take: But the more “less cartoony” artstyle makes 3 look ugly in my opinion.

As someone whos been playing DND for 6 years, it was so cool jumping into the world of DND in video game format is so much fun.
2023 was easily the best year for gaming in the 2020s decade so far. So many awesome releases that I had a blast playing, super mario bros wonder is probably my favourite 2d mario now
I love how Schaffrillas has started branching out to covering video games also
Not like he's been doing that since 2020 or anything...
He's been doing it for years now
He had been for 4 years now
Does he know?
It’s not like he did a ranking on the entire Mario Kart race tracks or anything
Jedi Survivor, Lies of P, Hi-Fi Rush and ESPECIALLY Armored Core 6 were real stand outs for me this year
ARMORED CORE MENTIONNED RAAAAAAAAAAH
Was nice to see Fromsoft make a non Souls games again
Star Wars jedi series is just straight up carrying Star Wars next to Andor.

I just randomly glanced at my dad browsing games for the ps5 and saw 10 seconds of Armored Core 6 gameplay.
I was immediately hooked and bought it as soon as it came out a few weeks later. I cannot love it enough. S ranking all the missions was difficult but dang it was absolutely the best game of 2023 in my opinion.
How lovely to have Schaff’s best games of the year on the same day as Dunkey’s best games of the year. This is the greatest day of my life.
That kinda paints an unflattering picture of your life.
Didn’t they also release within an hour of each other?
dunkey
and both haves pikmin 4 as their number 1
@@dammnpeople3131 omg that’s true. Come to think of it… we’ve never seen dunkey and Schaff in the same room🤔
Ok so, I know Laezel is difficult and kind of acquired taste and I understand if someone does not like her
BUT
In my opinion she also has the biggest character growth overall from all your companions, even outdoing Astarion to me. The sunset scene really hits in the feels after all you went through, Laezel in act 1 and Laezel in act 3 are the same person but you can really feel how much has changed if you stuck around with her.
Also, great video, loved to hear your thoughts on the games here.
Absolute W list my guy, my favourite games were Pizza Tower for its Wario Land inspired gameplay and humour, TOTK for how it expands on BOTW effortlessly, and Hi-Fi Rush for its gameplay, characters and music.
I won't stand for Lae'zel slander. Her growth in the game is astounding, the first time she actually APOLOGIZED to me for thinking I was weak was great, and her entire monologue at the end of the game if you're romancing her? C'mon, that's pure fire. Not to mention that every character's theme boiled down to its core is regaining autonomy, breaking the shackles others or just life itself put them in, it's great stuff.
Kind of unrelated but that spiderman segment where you briefly talk about in to the spiderverse and spiderman ps4 2018 really reminded how peak of a year 2018 was that we all took for granted. Probably the greatest year for gaming in a long time with God of war, rdr2, spiderman, smash bros and some other great games. And it was also an amazing year for cinema and music. Man 2018 was peak looking back on it
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk has to be one of the most fun times I’ve had playing a game in a while. The music’s fantastic, and the movement is so much fun once you’ve gotten a hang of it.
I know right. The music was peak and it was a blast racking up combos
Alan wake 2 isn’t for everyone, but if you enjoy slower survival horror games and remedy games in general, it’s the best game of the year.
Case in point; me. I am the target audience for it. And it worked.
Also Baldurs gate 3. That was good too
Let’s be honest, we’re all here to see what Schaff put in every slot BESIDES #1 because we all KNOW that he put Pikmin 4 at #1
You mean all other 9 places?
Tears of the Kingdom was my personal GOTY for 2023, and it was my most played game for that year too.
Haven't gotten far into Pikmin 4 or the Mario RPG remake yet, but I'm sure they'll be good times.
Mario Bros. Wonder was a great time for me and I even 100%'d it.
Same. Tears of the Kingdom is my GOTY, it really surpassed my expectations. I was afraid that it would be too similar to Breath of the Wild, but turns out it added enough new content to feel fresh again despite using the same world. That has greatly surprised me. In addition, it was nice to see what locations have changed and have all those Breath of the Wild flashbacks come to my mind while I played the sequel.
I want to get Pikmin 4 in the future, but I don't know if I'll get Mario Wonder or the Super Mario RPG remake. Mario Wonder, while I'm sure that it is a great game, I've heard that it is pretty short. A friend of mine got Mario Wonder and finished it in 3 days lol. So I don't know if the amount of hours I could potentially get from the game is worth the full 60 dollars price.
As for the Mario RPG remake, I've watched some videos about it and it looks cool, but as far as I know, they've lowered its difficulty a lot compared to the original, and they've made it a pretty easy game. That makes me doubt if the remake is worth or I would have a better time playing the original.
@@Fiucha8893 News flash: All 2D Mario games are short.
Also, the SMRPG remake is easier, but it’s not THAT much easier to the point that it makes the original look that much more challenging in comparison.
TOTK is my GOTY too!
Dunkey and Schaffrillas made the best 2023 games together.
RE4 remake, Final fantasy 16, Legend of Zelda tears of the kingdom, Super Mario Wonder, Super Mario RPG are some of my favourite games that came out this year. 💫

Hi Fi RUSH was my fave game of 2023. Haven't enjoyed playing a game so much for a couple of years until it.
I absolutely loved HI-FI RUSH and so far it’s been my game of the decade as I’m a big DMC and Rhythm game fan so it just clicked in the perfect way for me.
Feel like it kinda flew under many’s radar. Schaff didn’t play it, Dunkey didn’t even seem to play it (he said he’d rather play Spiderman 2 than all the games Xbox put out last year), but it is absolutely worth your time and money.
@@a17yearoldonyoutubeluigi I mean, it was shadow-dropped, and I haven’t seen any ads for it, so that’s probably why. But still, whatever attention it has now, it absolutely deserves it and more!

@@a17yearoldonyoutubeluigiExactly. Like if you grew up with PS2 Era video games, Hi Fi Rush is right up your alley. With a wonderful artstyle, satisfying combat, a GOD-TIER soundtrack, and endearing characters.
Its actually hilarious how it dropped the same day as Pizza Tower too
Cant wait to see what comes third place to baulders gate 3 and pikmin 4

BABY TULIN being in a Schaffrillas Productions' thumbnail is something I never expected to witness yet here I am and I love it, 2024 be crazy rn
00:34 As someone who knows very little about Fire Emblem, I REALLY want Schaff to make a video tearing Fates down to pieces
As someone who knows way too much about Fire Emblem, I want the exact same thing
@@sammulhall haha perfect then
Honestly while the story of Fates is terrible, the gameplay is actually pretty good and nice evolution of Awakening’s gameplay. But I will say in terms of the plot it is let down by what appears to be severe cuts to the game, the exclusion of vital plot information to be seen in paid DLC, and there is a scene where a character pulls out a one time use magic crystal ball with all the answers to give some exposition on the game.
Still better than FE Engage. At least I remembered it existed. And at least the plot was an interesting ride.
Fates is actualy a great game. You just need to skip the whole story, since gameplay is excellent (only in conquest tho).
@@sammulhall I am a fan of Fire Emblem… not to the point where I know everything, but still a fan
Dave the Diver for me is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece!
Hearing him compliment Cyberfunk’s soundtrack with him not being able to talk about Pizza Tower’s crushes my soul.
Or Zelda's or Sea of Stars'
Pikmin 4 sales about to jump after you AND Dunkey named it GOTY within an hour of each other 😂
Mario Wonder was my favorite of last year. Super charming game.
I ended up liking Astarion so much, I had to restart my game since I started with a character build damn near identical to his but I needed a reason to keep him in my party.
Fire Emblem Engage is easily my favorite game of the year! I love nearly everything about it but the main draw to me is some of the best gameplay in FE history. I've enjoyed 3H and such but this feels so much better to me. I love the characters, artstyle and story even if they have their flaws. The game just brought me so much joy this year and I can't thank IS enough for it.
Also Spider-Man 2 was amazing
Honestly, FE Engage is my favorite game of the year too
I know people don't like Engage because of the story/lack of character development with the supports, but as someone who found 3H overwhelming -and kinda boring- Engage was way more up my street. Just a solid goofy experience
I love your videos keep up the good work!
I can't wait for the Pikmin 4 vid, I genuinely love that game so much. Thanks for getting me into the series with 3, Schaff!
Pizza Tower
Pikmin 4 was honestly so good as my introduction to the series. I don’t know if I’ll try the first two games since 1 seems a bit too stressful and I don’t want to play in the randomly generated dungeons of 2, but I’ll probably end up trying 3 sometime!
Honorable mention should go to Undertale Yellow for being the single best fan game I've ever played
I really liked Jedi Survivor! It was probably my favorite Star Wars story of the year
Same
A good Star Wars narrative. A rarity at this day and age. I am pissed though. On my first playthrough, I was nearing the end but I couldn’t slice a door with BD and kind of wasted 30 or so hours before not being able to progress the plot any further.
Jedi Survivor deserved a spot on this list at the very least, one of the best video games of the year for sure
Golem is a masterpiece
Fr
Golem is gol-peak
I feel like we're witnessing a Pikmin 4 Sweep of Content Creator Top 10 Game Videos. Arlo, Dunkey, and now Schaffrilas? That's an impressive lineup.
I will say of the new games in 2023, Dredge has been an absolute favorite of mine. Its art style, sound design, music, it being a love letter to lovecraftian horror, the fishing mechanic. So good. Im glad it and dave the diver did a crossover.
I loved Jedi Survivor and am sad to hear it didn't click with you. It's combat was amazing, the force felt really good to use, and the story was so much fun. I loved seeing the High Republic explored. The problems on launch were super annoying, but once they got fixed it was smooth sailing. Easily my game of the year
LAE'ZEL IS AMAZING YOU SWINE
Seriously though, please give her a shot. Amazing character development.
For me, my game of the year was Ghost Trick, played it on Switch for the first time in 2023 and impressed the heck out of me with the story and gameplay gimmick. Cocoon was phenomenal as well, the puzzles blew me away which hasn’t happened since Portal. Mario Wonder, Mario RPG, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, and FE Engage were also a good time
The first half of the year was just such a flurry of games I liked.
Fire Emblem Engage and Hi-Fi Rush to start off the year. Then Tears of the Kingdom and Future Redeemed during the spring.
Nothing really captured me in the latter half until the Indigo Disk released, but those four kept me satisfied the whole year regardless.
My favorite game of 2023 was unironically the Switch port of Persona 4 Golden.
Thank you Atlus for releasing that game on a Nintendo console and introducing me to what is now one of my favorite games of all time.
Also... you _really_ weren't missing much with Sonic Superstars.
Same. I love the Investigation Team, they’re such goobers. Thank you guys for making me a Persona fan, if you were real lol
They still have yet to port Persona 5 on the switch.
@@Surafel-Assefa What do you mean, it’s on Switch
@@liammcnicholas918 No. Persona 5 ROYAL is on the switch. I am talking about the actual Persona 5
I really hoped that Sonic Superstars would be at least comparable to Mania which is one of my favorite games of all time (I've beaten it like 15 times lol), but nope, it's just an okay game, with good gameplay, but very questionable level design and music. At least on the other hand Mario Wonder was better than I expected, and it became one of my favorite 2d platformers ever made alongside Rayman Origins/Legends, and Sonic Mania.
I’ve been anticipating this more than his top ten movies
I think you should give laezel another shot. In my first play through I romances her and she had such a great character ark of learning to be a more companionate and caring person! Her ark of defying vlaakath and becoming her own person through learning by your character actions. The scene where you and laezel watch the sunrise and she talks about how she truest feels and how she feels like she found how to express emotion. It was something special and I really hope you give her a second chance.
5:00 Hearing you talk about great video game music in 2023 reminds me how angry I was that Octopath Traveler 2 wasn't nominated for Best Music Score.
With that said, I'd highly recommend playing Octopath 2 if you're looking for a turn-based RPG to play. You don't have to play the first game or know anything about it at all, the sequel is pretty much an improvement in practically every way. Also because the music is GODLIKE, imo
It's like people forgot about Octopath 2 right after it came out. It's sad. The game is really good.
Octopath ll is an interesting case for me. I love the game and think it's just better than the first in basically every way but it just didn't have as much of an impact on me as the first. Also doesn't help that last year we got Triangle Strategy which is now one of my top 5 favorite games of all time.
Oh yes! Octopath Traveler II is my favorite game of 2023!! And it’s all thanks to it being a much better sequel than the original!
The biggest highlight for me when I played the MJ sections in Spider-Man 2 was that there was a small group in Insomniac who are ITCHING to make another resistance game. I swear they felt like basic ideas on what another one of those could look like.
Yeah no not happening
Good to see a fellow Pikmin 4 game of the year enthusiast.
"There's no reason the memories should be out of order" THANK YOU OMG. I got demotivated to even bother with them once I got 1 and 2, and then I found like 9 or 10 right after and was befuddled what happened. I know there's a chart in game but I didn't find that first.
I just finished BG3 for the first time tonight, and whole(shadow)heartedly loved it from beginning to end.
Dropping your top 10 list at the same exact time as Dunkey is a bold move.
yeah i think the only thing i gained from seeing the tears out of order was seeing sonia's grave before her death. it just gave this really strong sense of tension and dread that wasn't there before. but that's also a very personal and specific example and nothing else was gained
I mean you can always just go back and watch them in order.
@@affirmingtoe15 yes, but first impressions are also important and can't be redone!
justice for lae’zel 😭 she’s such a sweetheart and loyal companion once you earn her trust and show her the truth about vlaakith
That was one of my favorite transitions into a square space read you’ve ever done.
The fact this came up a few minutes befores dunkey's best of 2023 is crazy
When i was playing BG3 with my brother on my 1st playthrough, we encountered some drunk kobolds, and in the middle of all of them was a barrel of flammable wine, so i threw a fire bolt into it, expecting a HUGE explosion, but instead what happened was that a drunk kobold with his belly full of wine fell out.
After laughing my ass off for almost 5 minutes (im not even joking, my family actually got worried) i knew this game was a miracle.
MARIO WONDER, SMRPG, TOTK, PIKMIN 4, PIZZA TOWER, SPIDER-MAN 2, MK8 DLC BEING GREAT!!!!!
DAMM, what a phenomenal year for gaming dude
I think the waterwraith in pikmin 4 might just be my favorite gaming moment of all time. Mostly because I haven’t played pikmin 2 to see its waterwraith but still it was awesome. Totk has my second favorite though with that part in the final boss that I won’t spoil involving a certain healthbar
Always makes me so genuinely happy to see Schaff acknowledging Pikmin and how great the series is when it's such an underrated and under-talked-about gem!! I'm thrilled at how much Pikmin 4 boosted the attention of the franchise and I'm so excited to see where Nintendo will (hopefully) take it next! 💗
10/10 year for video games, absolutely fantastic.
I would say 9/10 because Gollum came out this year
@@AnAveragePurplePikmin that and the kong game and redfall and the day before. But all four of those. As games don’t come CLOSE to touching the legacy do all the great games that came out this year

So….
The Clone Wars of the How To Train Your Dragon franchise?
@@UltimateDespairado Oh yeah for sure
4:22 Funny you said that, because there was a scrapped portal spinoff that had a very similar mechanic
As you include the Pathfinder, I HIGHLY recommend the game Superliminal, if you haven't already played it!
And as for this year's games, I am so happy that the Talos Principle 2 ended up as great as the first game.
Pikmin 4, Mario Wonder, and Kirby Rtdl Deluxe are probably among my top 5 switch games now
I’ll never be done with the persona 5 cast, I want more with them 😭
Thank you for the Yunaka mention I immediately liked
This was probably the biggest year of gaming for me in a long time. Got a PS5 to play Final Fantasy 16 and I loved it utterly and completely, and there are just so many other highlights throughout. BG3 really is a massive game, pretty undeniably an absolute achievement even if it isn't quite my personal favorite. Personal favorite has got to be a little well, personal, like Pikmin 4 for you. Great video, looking forward to more from you this year
Spider-Man 2 looks amazing. Too bad it's been delayed without a release date. I'll keep checking Steam. Here's hoping
What are you on?
My GOTY is Lies of P, with Alan Wake 2 close behind.
My game of the year us TOTK, with Lies of P close behind.
As someone who played modern Fire Emblem games, I can fully recomend Engage, it's a really good game and probably have the best gameplay in the entire series.
If you haven't play it, give it a try and you will have a good time.
As someone who has played the entire fire emblem series(yes even all the spinoffs) engage is easily my favorite in the franchise. Not the biggest fan of how you kinda brushed it under the rug but opinions and all that. Solid video all around. Really wish I could play baldurs gate 3.
Also. You put P5 Tactica over Fire Emblem Engage? That’s…an interesting choice.
Fortnite on top fr
I love TOTK but I absolutely hate its direction, especially now that we live in the post Aonuma-basically-said-"everybody who prefers the old style of Zelda is just blinded by nostalgia" era. TOTK, as a response to the fandom's criticisms of BOTW, is _awful_ . The dungeons are still lackluster, the story is worse than ever. By itself, they are both great games, but they're not _zelda_ games and I think we have to accept we need to turn to indies for our fix now, because Aonuma has expressed his absolute refusal to make one ever again.
I completely agree with #1
It quickly became one of my all time favourite games
It always makes me happy to see when one of my favorite UA-camrs loves Baldur's Gate 3 as much as I do. The Resident Evil 4 remake is my new favorite RE game, Super Mario RPG has been on my "want to play" list, and as much as I enjoyed Breath of the Wild, it also showed me that open world games are not my cup of tea, so I'm still hesitant about Tears of the Kingdom. Maybe I'll wait for a sale, or maybe I'll just watch a Let's Play of it. And I've heard so many mixed things about Persona 5 Tactica, but as a fellow P5 enthusiast, it's nice to hear that it's worth playing. That's another "wait for sale" one, though, or else I'll just borrow it from a friend.
Good video but I'm unsubbing because you dissed my girl Lae'zel
Not that you're likely to respond, but you FE opinions confuse me a bit. Engage and Fates have bad stories, and that matters to some people more than it matters to me. They're 2 of my favorite FE games for the gameplay alone, and I'm used to them getting crap on people who just want to dog on the stories.
But you have P5T on this list despite your story critiques. I doubt you played Pikmin 4 four times for the story. And you even have the great taste to mention Reboot Camp at the end of the video, despite AW having almost negative amounts of story.
So do you have an issue with the gameplay in those FE games, do you hold FE stories to a different standard, or what?
I heard reboot camp was a downgrade from the original
I still love totk and it is still my favourite game of the year but your criticisms are absolutely right. Still my personal favourite next to ocarina at 1st and majora 2nd
Slay the Princess was a real favourite for me, but my unironic favourite 'game' was probably the Celeste Strawberry Jam Collab. It is unbelievable to me how incredibly dedicated the Celeste modding community is, how fine-tuned every single map is, and how these people manage to take Celeste's excellent movement system to the next level.
He used the Veggietales: Ultamite Silly Song Countdown’s Silly Song Contraption of Silliness sounds for each number position each game is in for this video, and that makes me happy
P.S.: Happy New Years, man! 🙏🏼🦀
Chants of Sennaar:
A truly wonderful adventure-game where you must help a bunch of different villages and societies by deciphering their respective pictographic-languages.
18:00 see here's the trick, I've been playing it in multiplayer, and my friend made Astarion into a druid other than his one level in rogue so for most of my time, Astarion was an awesome rampaging polar bear
Can you please do videos on

The ad before the number one spot was for Cooking Mama so I thought that was your number one pick for a moment.
Every single playthrough of baldurs gate 3 I do I discover a new quest in baldurs gate 3 it's absolutely amazing
I’m so happy you included Bombrush Cyberfunk that was my most anticipated game of the year and as someone who loves the vibe of Jet Set I was very disappointed by its gameplay. But Bombrush Cyberfunk was everything I wanted Jet Set to be and it’s my favorite game of the year the music is 100/10
Great list as always, Schaff, but I’m guessing you didn’t have the means [or time] to play Hi-Fi Rush, either. That one’s my top game of the year. It’s a hack-and-slash where all your actions hit to the beat of the music, and it’s super stylish.
Also I hope you weren’t dunking on Tulin in the Zelda section, because not only is he the cutest of all the sages, but he’s a freaking sniper in gameplay.
