    I'm a translator. And I prefer AI over localizers because AI can be controlled by the author and respect the author. I became a translator because I wanted to become a creator and I don't trust other translators with my work. So I support this. Authors take priority. Respect them or get replaced.

      One of the things that I found most offensive about localizers is that they're not translators -- most don't speak the language, what they do is take a rough version from the translator and change it. This is something that otherwise would be done by the translator, who is typically bicultural (unlike your average localizer).
      I actually think that AI translators will probably never be up to completely replacing humans...but they would be incredibly good for enabling translators to do better work & faster, and that would mean they could do the polishing themselves.

      If you’re a translator with experience, then I’m sure you’re aware of the localization brain-rot infecting translators. Localization claims to do things that translators already did, and does it worse by doing weird things like choosing loose synonyms for translating words, completely ruining the tone and register of the word. Translators were good at this because it was their job to pin-point and transliterate the closest synonym. Yen Press is my prim example for this. It’s like they’re trying to translate it in a way that most people can’t read, regardless if the original was like that or not.

    I'd rather have bad machine translations, even if they're passed along raw without an actual translator doing a cleanup pass. (At what I hear the page rates tend to be, that might actually allow you to have human translators able to earn enough to make the job worthwhile: You might not be able to raise the page rates, but if you drop the amount of work required to match what you can pay...)

      I do not and will not side with anyone over being replaced with AI if I have any reason to suspect that they supported, in ANY fashion, the replacement of men with machines in workplaces. This is no different. The only reason people are freaking out over AI artists and translators is because the folks who have most loudly advocated for the destruction of low skill labor work forces are the same people who believed their artsy positions could never be taken from them. Self centered fuckers have been telling workers "learn to code" for *decades* now when their loss of jobs at the hands of machines was brought up.
      The rest of you can learn to code now too. There is NOTHING wrong with AI replacing artists, just as there was nothing wrong with robots replacing working hands. We crossed this river a long time ago now. Anyone playing otherwise is just one of those selfish tools who believed their skills were irreplaceable and whom shared not one drop of sympathy with people who lost their homes and went hungry when they were kicked out of machine plants.

      Tbh in today's globalized world, the concept of an anime localizer isn't necessary anymore. People are already used to consuming international media, with international cultural references. We don't need "jelly donuts" anymore. All we need is pure translators.

    • @kathryncampbell4432
      @kathryncampbell4432 3 місяці тому +2

      @DaShikuXI
      To be a bit blunt on this, some things might still need it - not for cultural references, but more for idioms and euphemisms: this is a completely unrelated language, but in a novel series called “Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System”, there’s an alias whose meaning doesn’t translate well when done literally: in the original language (Chinese), “Airplane” is roughly slang for “beating an airplane”, which I’ll have to leave understanding the meaning to readers because of UA-cam.
      In a Japanese case, there’re a few cases in anime where certain jokes don’t land because of *tone* , rather than anything cultural. I saw a video going over dubs vs subs, where there were two dubbed versions of an anime: one where it was a direct translation, one where it changed the words to capture the same tone. The second actually sounded less awkward.
      Which brings my next point, some words are not one-for-one: other languages have words that don’t exist in our language and vice-versa: the English language has a lot of synonyms that do not exist in other languages, and Japanese has a lot of words that don’t exist in English.
      I’m adding this part because I just remembered Spy x Family, but it’s probably the best case of localizers. Due to Anya being six, there are a lot of pun/jokes that would require annotations to understand , such as what leads her to thinking of frogs from an assassin’s words, or why Yuri ends up calling her “Chihuahua Girl” (it was because Anya mistakes her uncle’s words as “powerful chihuahua” or “swole chihuahua” in the English translation).
      This doesn’t excuse what current localizers do, but it does mean that *good ones* would still be needed.
      And AI might just be that, the barrier that separates the hacks from the fans.

    The question for anime and manga localizers: can you translate anime and manga without putting anything weird in them even if it's just a single word? After all, we don't ask you to put something subversive on them.

    Translating softwares have been a thing for years. Technically you could say it's a bit trickier for a machine to translate text in a manga or graphic novel as the formatting and layout deviate from "normal" full-page material.
    Here's the kicker though, even with translation software on "standard layout", an actual translator will still review the source material and the final product to make sure no weird shenanigans pops up. The issue is more or less activists parading as translators and localizers without learning the process properly and screwing things up.

    Considering the issue with how bad some AI translations can be, it'd be great to have real people localise instead. However! The amount of corruption in the localising industry is ridiculous with tons of activists injecting nonsense into their translations that wasn't even what was said. So I'd still rather have a bad AI translation than blatant mistranslations. At least with AI, you know you're getting a translation that's going to be more accurate than anything else unless it's been programmed to "wokeify" translations or something.

    As long as a trusted human reviews the translations and only make changes based on grammatical structure, it's perfectly fine. At present, AI is just a glorified hybrid of a search engine and chat bot. Not the reincarnation of Shodan, Am, Skynet, GlaDOS, Hal 2000 or Joshua. We're a long way off from that.

    I don't believe that the translations will be left 100% to the AI. There will still need to be an actual person to review the translation to ensure it was translated correctly. And translations are not always 1:1 due to words having different cultural meanings, and people will still need to ensure that the correct meaning is translated, not just the words. I don't know how good the AI translations are, but I suspect it won't be perfect every time, and will still require people to review it and correct the mistakes.
    Example: "Arigato (ありがと)" means "Thank you" in a casual form, and "Arigato Gozaimasu (ありがとございます) is the formal and polite form of saying thank you, which is often translated to "thank you very much" in English. It does not literally mean "thank you very much", "Arigato Gozaimasu" is just the polite and formal way to say thank you, and in English "Thank you very much" is a polite and formal way to say thank you. So we can use that translation. But we can also say in English "Thank you so much!" or "Thank you with all my heart" or "I very much appreciate it" or many other ways to express thank you in a formal way. I don't know if AI translators would always translate "arigato gozaimasu" to "thank you very much". Or if it would be able to recognize context, and translate the correct meaning. Like if a dying husband says to his wife "Arigato gozaimasu" for being by his side. It might make more sense to translate it to "Thank you with all my heart" instead of translating it to "Thank you very much". I don't know if AI translators would be able to recognize context like this and translate the meaning and feelings correctly.
    So I have doubts that AI translations will be left 100% to AI unless there's no money or time to have a human review it. And if a person needs to review it, then they can still abuse the translations.

    Square Enix? Good, that's restores some of my respect for them. I just Finished Dawntrail, and boy let me tell you. The "Woke Agenda" is STRONG in it. Complaining about being "Dead Named", the pitfalls of Eugenics, and mostly the ONLY Kingdom that is to be "taken out"... if you run around and look at the people of the Kindgom that is to be destroyed... they are ALL of "pale complection". The most you see of slight darker skin is Duskwight Elezen... Which would be "pale complection adjacent".
    SBI and their Woke Agenda didn't just put their nonsense in a "few lines of he story as to not offend anyone of Western Audience." They full on made sure the one kingdom that gets wiped out, is a giant "Unalive White People" message.

    When the tech gets good enough, there's no reason to use humans for translation. There's no creative process going on. Author has certain vision and expresses it. Audience wants the same thing, just legible/audible in their language. With AI being good enough, you could record 1 voice performance and get 15 languages (and same voice! so Kiryu in Yakuza is always the same awesome Japanese voice actor, not some California fart in English version). Obviously there will always be some tiny edge cases where for AAA perfect performance you will need a language expert assisting with some rare very tricky bit where languages diverge so much it can't be easily swapped out... but still assisting the original director and/or assisting the translator AI.
