As a Chinese, I absolutely do not want anything woke in a game based on one of the four classic literatures of my culture. Journey to the West is based on mythology with Sun Wukong and his quest for the sutras with his master, there's no need for "female characters" because it focuses on the Monkey King and his journey of growth. There's no records of any trans characters ever showing up in the story, and I'm glad the devs didn't cave into pressure. Will definitely be playing this when it releases.
And thank God for that. I respect people's choices and preferences but I'm really tired of this woke culture spoiling everything, just because they want to be represented in every little thing.
I'm a woman and I don't feel insulted because there is not a woman figure either on the demo or end game. I'm still gonna buy the game and enjoy my time with it 😎

when I leaned Wu Kong : Black Myth would be released on August 20, I planned to buy standard/ base game edition.
But after I read all about these Internet Gossip News, I decided to buy (pre-order) Digital Deluxe Edition yesterday.
Game Science is not a Western game company. They don't owe you an explanation and I hope they blacklist IGN from future previews or press releases.
Hoping they blacklist them too. Also hoping for a long future for the studio, and maybe a callback to these days when IGN burned that bridge.
Considering their (mandatory) ties with the CCP, I doubt they would even list IGN or any media, mainstream or otherwise, for previews or releases.
All non woke studios should follow suit. If not by outright refusal of cooperation there other ways and arguments to exclude them.

Depends on perspective. Having your game covered by IGN or Kotaku is just free exposure at this point because they are always involved in some kind of drama that never stops trending. Chances are Wukong would have never gotten this popular without their involvement, so in a sense they actually did the devs a favor. There's two ways to get more sales; good reviews from trustworthy sources, and bad reviews from those everyone despises. If nothing else, this only shows how rage-baiting people into buying something out of spite is a very valid and successful tactic.
How long until the industry starts doing this more often? Or perhaps they already do and we're all being taken for a ride...? 🤔

If they remain deathly silent and let the fight only be with IGN&Friends and the public then it becomes more sus. Thank goodness this is gaining traction. I was so sick and tired of every IGN article about Wukong constantly complaining about sexism when there was literally no sexism in the game at all. I just hope that BMW takes one of the most important aspects of Souls games: that the story and ambiance are subtle. I hope they don't hammer us over the head with story, button prompts, tutorials. In other words, i hope they trust the player like Fromsoft does in just presenting the game subtlely and trusting that the players will accept it without having it drilled into them. Fromsoft games are alluring without having to resort to pandering.

Let's be real. FromSoft WISHES it were this good. They even admit they barely know anything about the west which is why their games are so odd and sit badly with anyone who likes history or western fantasy. BMW is pretty spot on. It's like Atlus where they do add some creativity but it's in the name of representing the real mythos. Lies of P is how western style fantasy in this vein should look, even if it's more fairytale and less historic which makes sense since it's based on actual fairytales. The souls games are rapidly getting overtaken at this point.

They're a tech & internet conglomerate and the number one game publisher in China (Especially mobile games). They're easily on the same level as Nintendo and Electronic Arts. And are behind the releases of big games like League of Legends (Riot Games) and Fortnite (Epic games which they partly own). Hell, I played Warframe and they bought the parent company of Digital Extremes (Leyou back in 2020).

But after channel Fridayeveryday mentioned all of these with boycott thingy, I will buy deluxe edition of it somewhere in july.
Just so everyone would know, the Chinese government has a vested interest in preserving culture, such as having media portray either traditional clothing, being set in a historical setting, or portraying old mythological stories (which Wukong is one of them - from the epic: Journey to the West).
The Chinese government do give subsidies and/or monetary support for studios who are keen on developing or producing entertainment media that portrays Chinese culture. It is quite likely Game Science studio has secured funds from the government to develop Black Myth, and with that, they have stipulations from the government to ensure such portrayals do not stray too far from historical accuracy or, in this case, from source material.
Being a historical epic written in the past, Journey to the West has quite little fem-coded characters, other than characters like the Goddess of Mercy, White Snake Spirit, Princess Iron Fan, and other smaller demons, usually a succubus-style spirit.
The side characters Wukong usually meet are demons, spirits, or smaller deities, which are often depicted as old mountain sages.
Asking Game Science studio to change or adapt their game to include fem-coded characters where in the original epic has little of, is basically asking Game Science to forgo the subsidies or face penalties.
But of course, leave to the westerner journos and their fanatics to ignore anything cultural and just jam modern politics into a game which is trying to portray arguably one of the MOST FAMOUS epic coming out of Chinese literature. The arrogance of westerners never fail to astound me.
Also for clarification: I'm not a Chinese citizen from China, but I'm quite familiar with how many of the Asian game industry work.
This, Stellar Blade and Elden Ring DLC are the only games I'm interested in this year.
The Western studios are obsessed with pushing politics and ugly characters, if I want to see ugly people I'll take a walk down the local high street any day of the week, I buy games to be entertained and get away from politics and ugly people.

For me personally, the very first time I have EVER heard about Black Myth Wukong was when they said the won't be working with Sweet Baby and I was IMMEDIATELY interested in the game before I even knew what kind of game it's gonna be. And from the overall feedback on the internet I think everyone thinks the same - Sweet Baby being involved = bad. That simple. And if gamedev studio actually comes out and says they literally rejected their "help" that makes the studio almost god-like these days. It's quite sad, but entertaining at the same time.

I gave up IGN years ago when they failed to appreciate Alien Isolation. They gave a 5 to that classic.
The reviewer actually complained about the game being too difficult while playing at max difficulty.
idk alien isolation was pretty bad. Horrible AI, 2 enemy types in the whole game, mash m1 combat, and ps2 era stealth mechanics

Alien isolation is one of my favourite games of all time. The platinum was one of the most memorable journeys of a game I had. I played it again recently and it still looks and plays awesome
And them along with other usual junk pundits killed the potential fan base and sequel. AI was a masterpiece is suspense and horror. Literal edge of your seat horror. I wish they’d make a second.

It's nice that Asia is once again reclaiming a big chunk of the game market. They were kinda failing for a few years more often than not. But with almost every western dev thinking identity politics is more important than actually supplying the paying customers with what they want these days it has left a big hole in the market.<

Black Myth Wukong is maybe the most beautiful game, as we except from 2024 games, Elden Ring should learn about pleasant proportions and animations, as a graphic designer cant wait to try it.
