There's something about the Southern Pacific Daylight paint scheme that can make almost any locomotive look appealing (steam, diesel electric), doesn't matter the scale that it's in.
The 1983 whistle was a good chuckle! I've seen the daylight train out here in the west. Its so imposing and the real whistle sounds like bloody murder raging down the track and echoing through the mountains like the screams of lost souls.
I just started watching your channel...I can't stop watching. I was obsessed with trains for the first 17 years of my life then lost the spark when I started high school. I'm 41 now and just got all my trains from my parent's house and the spark is coming back......Sooooooo much has changed my head is spinning. Thank you!
I grew up with MPC, and I love em!! Totally reminds me of my childhood! I got my first one as a Christmas gift from my dad in 1972!! A GP-9, and I still run it today
I just fried my circuit board on my 8800. I didn't know about that foam until it was too late. I'm going to have it fixed because it was my grandpa's and he liked everything working.
@@dagryffynhobby I really liked your last video. That's a gorgeous Hudson you have. Yes it's definitely going to be fixed. My Pops wouldn't have it any other way ☺️🚂🚂🚂
@@cheapbastardmodeltrains7210 thank you! I probably shouldn’t have bought it but it’s too late for that. I feel like my grandfather is right here with me every time I run the trains. So if yours would want it fixed, then fixed it must be!
I’m a new viewer, I’m 18, just starting to get back into my love for Trains, when I was around 10 11 12 I always wanted to have my own HO scale layout, but now I’m starting to love your layout, and want one similar to yours, with all Lionel trains! And man you have the best videos, just the information you provide along with your awesome AWESOME personality, man I love it! Thanks, best subscription I’ve made yet!
I think one of the best advancements in model trains has to be the low-end speed control. Don't get me wrong - the increases in detail to the bodies and sound effects are really important too - but even if we had those but the trains took off like a rocket and couldn't slowly & realistically build up speed, the effect would be lost. For me at least, I mostly saw trains in stations, arriving and pulling away. The slow build up of watching the engines hiss and hum as they slowly but smoothly built up speed was the beginning of adventure. All the sounds of the bells, whistles, and horns are associated in my mind with watching these locomotives coming to a halt gently and smoothly pulling away. A train moving at high speed is great, but the finer points can be lost in a blur. A train at rest is pretty yet restrained. But the transition state in between is where you can fully observe and take in all the details, engineering, sights, and sounds of these living machines. Poetry in motion.
For me it's the improvement of the whistle over speed or body work. I think of the whistle as the engines soul, it's voice. Without the right whistle your high and mighty streamlined express engine.......can sound like a tiny little pup.
I have the Daylight from the 1991 catalogue with the original Railsounds that is based on the same tooling as the MPC Daylight. While it doesn't sound very realistic by modern standards, Railsounds 1 was a big improvement over the Mighty Sound of Steam in my opinion. I've heard that the tooling for these engines is just a modified version of the J class, but I don't have a J (for now) so I can't confirm that. While they aren't very accurate, they are still very cool engines.
I have that Daylight engine that I have not run since 1983 . Thanks for the tip about the circuit board , I will have to check it before I power my engine up, I would not have thought about checking that board.
That's awesome. I really enjoy your videos. The last layout I had was HO and that was about 30 years ago. Now that's all in the past. I still have the lionel engine and cars my father bought me back in the 50's. It's a 2025 engine with passenger cars. Sits on a shelf in my workshop. Keep making these great videos.
Can't go wrong with SP and specifically can't go wrong with seeing old vs new comparisons! The more videos I see you post about MPC really gives me a new appreciation for this era in model trains!
Very BEAUTIFUL steam locomotives with AWESOME features and sound effects! Them passenger cars very BEAUTIFUL as well, with shiny paint scheme and NICE inside lights! Thanks for sharing Chris and enjoy your trains! I definitely enjoy my ho scale CSX locomotives with many freight cars.
Though not my favorite railroad, I'd say the daylight is up there in designs designs. It almost has a Dreyfus Hudson design feel where it's still a streamline engine, but it highlights area's like the pistons and drive rods in order to make it easier for the work crew when the engine needs to be repaired.
MPC engine looks great. The harmonica and the sound of sand paper certainly are unique. Love how the air filled with protochoke. My regards to the wife for tolerating the “sweet smell of chanel no5.”
Great video as always! As much as I love the Vision Line series, I still will always have a place in my heart for the old MPC era items. Growing up, my grandfather (who bought and sold trains for close to 30 years) would always give my brother and I an engine and a few cars from the MPC era for our birthdays and Christmas! Keep up the great work!
That has to be the fastest unboxing I’ve ever seen 😂😂 LOL! Yup, they’ve sure come a long way with sound, lighting, etc., loved the horn 😂😂. So, does your better half kinda wanna throw you out for smoking up the room or are you using the sweet smell of Chanel #5 😂? Thanks again for another cool video. BTW I have the same set of canoes but only in N scale, yours looks like a couple of yachts in very small ponds, I love it 👍🏻😄
This comment still has me laughing. After running the trains with that much atmosphere my AC system does a nice job of spreading the Protosmoke Christmas scent all over the house. And my better half handles it with such grace, haha!
At the Railroad Museum of Long Island Riverhead location, we have a Scale MTH protosound 2 daylight 4449, and oh boy it lets out a heap of smoke when you turn it on.
I am back from my Social Media Vacation and I am excited to start binging your videos again to catch up. I am also loving your MPC Era videos, these were the trains that were around when I was growing up in the 90s that people had. I own a few, but I always find myself watching one of your videos and immediately searching online for the train you just featured. The Daylight is something that I’ve dreamed about owning, in any era, because of the history of the Southern Pacific where I live and the fact that red and orange are my favorite colors. I enjoyed this video and I always enjoy seeing trains running around your amazing layout…the Barbie train (?) making a cameo appearance was also a nice chuckle for me. Closing in on 8,000 subs and I remember being here when you had 300 something subs…I am extremely proud of you, Chris! It could not have happened to a better person and a better ambassador to this great hobby! ❤️

@@RBPTrains what really intrigued me about the engines is that Lionel used the original frame, two type one pull more motors, magnatraction, and NO Rubber traction tires. I have to decide what I am going to do as when I picked it up the engine does not look like it was run. I think there was a set of five and they were made in 1981.
