I’ve been in the cab of both of these kinds of engines! The Yellowstone at the Lake Superior Railway Museum in Duluth is even attached to a mechanism that makes the wheels move!
I’ve yet to see a Yellowstone in person, but I also have been in the cab of a Big Boy. I visited 4014 several times when it was on display in Pomona, CA. Of course standing next to a Big Boy, you can see the massive proportions. However, those proportions don’t really get put into perspective until you go into the cab. Seeing the enormous stoker screw and seeing just how insanely large the firebox is on a Big Boy was an experience.
I just went to that museum yesterday. All the trains are amazing but I’m pretty sure that Yellowstone engine is the pride and joy of the collection. It’s huge, too. Even with the track sunk slightly into the floor, the engine _towers_ over you. It’s one of the few locomotives you’re able to go into the cab of there, and it’s crazy how many valves and levers there are. They have the firebox open so you can look inside and I’m pretty sure it’s bigger than my bedroom.
Love the trains. Your comments about not being afraid of messing up the Yellowstone underscore my reticence to get big “nice” engines that may end up as shelf queens.
I love your enthusiasm for model trains! You’re just one of those guys, that by being happy, you make others happy! I really enjoy watching your videos, they’re such fun. Keep up the amazing work!
I completely agree. Every time I watch one of your videos, it makes me want to go and play with my trains. And buy more trains! You bring a lot of joy to the hobby Chris.
I'll probably never have enough room to field a layout with the wide-radius curves required to allow these locomotives to operate, but I want to thank you for showing them both in action. WOW!
Historically the Big Boy and the Yellowstone would have had the same whistle: the Hancock long bell 3 chime. I guess you can't always trust the model train companies to get it right 😅. But that hooter sounds amazing regardless! And im just glad that the Yellowstone lives on through that beautiful model.
Interesting to note as well. The Yellowstone Z-5 was produced in 1930, 11 years before the Big boy and was the largest locomotive at that time. The DM&I railroad specified this design after evaluating the Z-5 battle freight as a helper over Bozeman Pass in Montana. The NP Yellowstone had the worlds largest firebox to burn Lignite Coal found in that area.
I really like everything you do in your videos! Most of all, you embody the very best of our hobby, The look on your face when you talk about your trains is exactly what I feel every time I turn on my layout!! Thanks!!!!!
Almost too much awesomeness, Chris! These two locomotives are above the top of the line, in prototype and in model! Both have very authorative whistle sounds that command attention! Real treasures for your collection. No wonder you're exited to own them!
I happened to inherit the MTH version of the Yellowstone with multiple sets of DMIR ore cars from my grandfather when he passed. Its probably one of my favorite sets just due to the sheer size of the Yellowstone. Amazing video as always! Keep it up with the great work!
You should post some pics and videos. Aiming to unveil my utube, Stof's train yard October 30,21 and perhaps you can post some pics and video in its comments. RBP has inspired me with his great work.
Thank you for sharing. My son and I enjoyed your video. He is a fan of the Big Boy. We did not know about the Yellowstone so it was fun to learn about it. It really is a beautifully made engine.
Your trains are wonderful. Your layout is incredible and you are a wonderful host! I would look forward to see these locomotives stretch their legs and the new loop additions you installed on your layout!
For those that don't know the Yellowstone that's at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth MN is raised up and compressed air runs the drivers every 15 minutes with a documentary talking about the Yellowstone's and their service. It's quite a beautiful site to see.
I don’t think it’s compressed air. From the cab, if you look out the right side and down, you can see they have mechanisms driven by electric motors that spin the wheels. It’s an awesome sight, seeing the driving rods and everything moving and rotating along with the wheels.
@falcondragonslayer No this comment of mine is old and I had forgot about it. It's a geared motor as shown by the museum themselves in their video during COVID.
Fantastic comparison between locomotives. The DMIR Yellowstones actually wore Hancock Longbell 3 chime whistles. If your TMCC soundset has that whistle, it would be more prototypical.
Chris, your enthusiasm is most contagious. I do like your very nice layout. But what I appreciate the most is the accuracy of what you are saying about the prototype locomotives. You have a site that 10,000 listeners to and it would be a shame if the information was incorrect. Thank you for doing your homework so well.
That Yellowstone whistle? I can imagine the sound if I was camping on the forest alone on the night. Suddenly that whistle sound can hear from the distance.
Nice video. My parents generation is old enough to remember seeing locomotives like this working. I’ve only seen and rode steam engines for tourist events. Must have been thrilling to see locomotives like this in action. Nice job with this video Chris. You inspire me to do more with my layout. Maybe I will get my layout on UA-cam someday.
3:46 If 4014 was sentient and could actually speak, and hear you, Chris, this is probably how he would respond: 4014: "Ho ho ho, oh Chris. I would love to come to the east coast! Fingers crossed, or uh... crossheads crossed in my terms, that special trackage rights are given to me visit towns connected by other fellow railroads!" Loved that comment from you Chris, and amazing model of the Yellowstone too! Let's hope your channel keeps on-a chugging for a long, LONG time to come!

3rd rail steam engines are great! Personally I own one of their models of 3751 that was released in 1998, even came with a little book on the restoration and history of the real engine. They pop up on ebay somewhat frequently and can be easily converted to TMCC/Railsounds 5. Hope you enjoy your Yellowstone, looks amazing.
I love the siderod action on the Yellowstone. Looks like the small lubricator linkages move and seem to pump oil all over to the oiling points on the locomotive just like in real life.
Your enthusiasm makes this vid SOOOOO exciting. NICE JOB! What a great subject! This is the first vid I have seen from you, and I have liked and subscribed.
With headphones on, both whistles gave shivers down the spine, like something ancient rolling through the southern pines. I need to figure out how to put a sound box in my L-gauge Big Boy's coal car.
i cant think of anything i would rather hear than the sound of a lonesome steam whistle going through the woods, and that old familiar choo choo sound of the mighty drive wheels!
Really pumping out those videos! Fantastic engine and Sid always makes fantastic upgrades! I feel ya with not wanting to touch your engines haha! I’ve had so many issues with one of my models, I’m afraid to even run its replacement! Keep the videos coming, Chris! Really close to 9k!
I wanted to get out there and catch 4014 this year myself. Oh well! I’ve never heard of this engine! I feel like a noob. Been in the hobby for decades haha (well, the three I’ve been alive) EDIT: It truly does sound haunting.
Nice layout. Beautiful & very detailed. Steam Loco the Yellowstone, never scene or heard of it before. I have The 3 rail brass Big boy. Thanks for sharing.
Saw Big Boy on its first tour when it came through Arizona. I took LOTS of pictures, including shots I sent Ed for his archive. An experience not to be missed if it's at all possible to see. Spend money on going to see the engine - it's worth it.
When you said, "so, I put a bunch of tanks, on the back of the Yelllowstone...", I was thinking tanks [cars] and not tanks [weaponry]. Thanks for posting!
Beautiful engine. Once you start buying brass it’s hard to go back! The detail is unmatched and some brass engines can be found 2nd hand for great prices

Beautiful model by Sunset 3rd rail now I gotta find a Yellowstone for sure. While the hooter whistle sounds amazing the Yellowstones actually had Hancock class whistles similar to the lionel Big Boy's Whistle.
As a Minnesotan, I have been able to see the Yellowstone in-person. The thing is quite impressive. Of course, I could not help that you avoided saying Duluth and Missabe. They are pronounced as "duh-LOOTH" and "miss-AH-bee," if you were worried about flubbing them.

These are magnificent! You really need some iron ore cars for the Yellowstone. I live in northern MN and have seen the Yellowstones on Duluth and Two Harbors. And my grandpa used to work for the DM&IR. In fact, I think I have a shovel or two stamped with those letters.
I have many Sunset and Sunset/3rd locomotives, steam and diesel, all in 2 rail. Most 3 railers have no knowledge of the company.. They have been a well respected scale model company for MANY decades, now under 2nd generation family ownership. The same outfit also operates Golden Gate Depot, for passenger cars.
Chris whata awesome loco love those gigantic engines a cool display on your layout amazing very inspiring for me to build another layout your passion for trains and the models just a breath of fresh air keep up these cool vids thanks for sharing
Nice Video. Its tough to compare the sound sets. The 3rd rail is the same sounds set from the first release of the EM1 over 20 years ago... The Big Boy in Legacy just blows it away.
Yes ,I would be afraid of it .I like my old lionel trains.Ihave some modern scale items but I have broken parts just from handling them.Real nice video.
Not a UP guy. My favorite roads to model CP, CN, NYC. Like the story & history of the DMIR. The yellow stone engines are massive indeed! Besides 3rd. rail Mth also made this engine. Yes kid gloves when handling brass engines. They are very delicate, especially the small parts. Is the yellow stone still available from both ?
3rd Rail (Sunset Models) shipped this engine with the N&W hooter whistle. When I upgraded, I kept the 3rd Rail factory sounds to maintain the value of the model. Not prototypical of the Yellowstone but still pretty cool! Thanks for watching!
I was able to see the 8-4-4 No.X4014 Big boy locomotives in Denver, wasn’t there long cause of how crowded it was but I was able to hear it’s whistle in person, twice and omg what a experience! But I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite locomotives but it was fun to see! Im still trying to figure out my favorite locomotives.
It's not 4014, but go to Cumberland MD to see 1309, a Baldwin C&O 2-6-6-2. It's finishing its trial runs and will be running the POLAR EXPRESS starting in Dec 2021.
That is a gorgeous model! I have a few Sunset 3rd Rail steamers including the C&O late Allegheny which is my favorite. However the Lionel sound file 3rd Rail uses for articulated engines is probably from either an N&W Y (or A) or the C&O Allegheny. DM&IR Yellowstones had a multi-chime steamboat style whistle and not a single note hooter. Certainly not a deal breaker though. If you have the time can you do a comparison video featuring the C&O Allegheny and the UP Bigboy? I'd love to see them side by side. Your layout looks great. Thanks for all you do for us.
You are spot on with the whistle. Definitely from a N&W or similar. This is the sound set that 3rd Rail selected for the engine so I opted to use it for the upgrade to maintain the authenticity of the model. I would be glad to compare the Big Boy and Allegheny. Great suggestion! Thanks for watching!
@@RBPTrains In so far as what 3rd Rail selected for that engine I am pretty sure that it is the only Lionel sound file they have for articulated steam engines. Sort of one size fits all. I would love to see Sunset 3rd Rail offer MTH Proto Sounds along with the Lionel Rail Sounds they presently use. Not sure what legal hurdles would have to be overcome for that to happen but it would be a nice change.
The whistle of the 4014 has always said, AUTHORITY . " I'm coming through, get out of my way." At least to me. Great video, thanks RBP !
"Out of my way! Express coming through!"
Heard the 4014 whistle just last month. If you stand anywhere nearby, it will almost knock you over. LOUD!!!
