  • On the way home from our 3 day New England overlanding trip, we decided to go a little out of our way to check off a bucket list item - Mount Washington Auto Road! It was looking very cloudy when we set out, but regardless we knew the experience would be worth it!

    My experience driving up mt.washington auto road was a fantastic journey. Reaching the summit we parked just below the tip top house .As I exited my vehicle I saw a Cessna aircraft flying by .I was able to look down onto the top of his wings while standing on the ground. Not a view you see everyday. An amazing memory that will remain with me forever

    I watched this video before traveling to NH to go up the mountain and now after. Videos don’t clue you in to how scary this really is. This was the scariest thing I have physically ever done other than flying in a helicopter seated at the edge of an open door. I thought coming down was going to be scarier, but it was much easier actually. I made sure I was the LAST car down so I could drive center of the road and hug the inset if need be. Yes you do need to watch your brakes and go stop here and there to give them a rest. On the way up I stopped at a few of the rest spots and said to a lady I’m never doing this again. She said me neither I’m NEVER coming back up here. Her husband the driver said nothing scares him, but this had him slaking and his hands sweaty. Now that is over I think I would like to go up again in autumn, try the cog rail and also attempt a hike.

      The cog is worth the money. esp if you don't like the road! I like taking it in the fall when its leaves at the bottom and snow at the top.

    Did it in a 64 Chevy II. Inline six, powerglide automatic trans, 4-wheel drum brakes. Nearly caught on fire coming down.

    Did the auto road in 2015. Visibility was about as far as my front bumper the whole way up and down. They ended up shutting the road down as soon as I came down.

    • @DirtRoadTherapy
      @DirtRoadTherapy  Рік тому

      That’s nuts. Due to fog?

      @DeanShirley818 Рік тому

      @@DirtRoadTherapy Yeah, it was 100% cloud cover. Heading up I was the last vehicle they were letting up for the day. I think they only reason they did was because of how the rig was built. LoL. An ice storm also hit after I got down so I think the road was closed for like two more days after I was up there. The photo I my book might as well have been on a white sheet of paper.

    I agree it’s the scariest on-pavement experience ever. As far as the spectacular view I was too scared to look. I kept my eyes glued to the road. I did it once, never again!

    I have been up the auto road and took the Cog in the late 1990's when all they had were the steam locomotives. I am not a fan of the newer diesel locomotives

    • @jesselevesque8059
      @jesselevesque8059 Рік тому

      @@DirtRoadTherapy I don't like to visit when it's windy on top. I check the weather before leaving the house. When I get there I pay the toll. I can't race up the mountain because of traffic and my engine overheats anyway, if I do. I spend some time on top, look around, grab some coffee, chit chat, maybe a bite then I wait a while and have some fun on the way down! :) 2nd gear handles most of the braking. I'm glad they don't give chase to hand out citations for speeding. lol

      @@Scott-fy7fm Thanks! No I hadn't seen Travis Pastrana record drive to the top! I watched a couple of videos after showing him race up the hill to the top. The videos didn't look frightening to me probably because Pastrana didn't have cars popping out in front of him or hikers walking down and didn't have to worry about getting caught speeding! lol

    Yes, there is a trail, the AT.
    The cog railroad is a really cool way to get up there too. I wonder how many folks don't downshift and burn their brakes out each year

      I just took my son this past Saturday May 18th 2024. People were riding their brakes all the way down and in High Gear. Lady that ran the Souvenir stand told me shes seen people actually pour water on their brakes. I seen a guy in a brand new Vette about to do the same,until I enlightened him.

    I Have done Mt Washington, and Pikes Peak, and Not far from Pikes Peak (and 200 ft higher at 14,265) Mount Evans which is now called Mount Blue Sky. Evans was the scariest with no guard rails and hairpins. All done on my 2004 Harley Electra Glide.
