  • Had a great time this weekend ripping the cog. The MWOBS higher summits forecast said that the summit would be -25 to -35 with windchill, so I knew it was gonna be a cold one. Starting temp in the parking lot was -3, and it got much colder as I went up. Got a little past Jacob's Ladder near 5000 feet elevation and the windchill was at least in the negative teens. The snow started to get pretty windblown too, so I decided to call it and then got some turns in at Wildcat afterward!

I've skied this dozens of times, often in conditions worse than this. Good turns,,great camera angle, even better soundtrack, now go back and ski it at sunset in 2025, and keep sharing the mt washington Westside vibe⛷️

I just got into skinning this season! I was thinking of skinning the cog just up to Jacob’s ladder some time next season. As of right now, I’m just resort skinning for the exercise but would love to get out to do some blue square back country, from what I’ve read, staying below JL isn’t too bad. Any reccos, tips or suggestions welcome!

Right on!! I’d say everything below JL is definitely pretty equal to a blue resort run (depending on conditions of course). Honestly I would say to go for it this season if you can get up there! It’s a great intro to backcountry type of run because if you want to turn around at any point for whatever reason you can just transition right where you are and ski back down! If you want any more advice or other easy backcountry spot recommendations feel free to dm me at connors.adventures on Insta!

There are many objective hazards along the Cog trestle, they don't clear the slope for skiing, so it has risks you don't find in pure backcountry lines, like random castoff railroad ties and steel. But it gets you onto mount Washington's snowpack on the Observatory's Westside, where upslope snow buries those railroad ties until the next hurricane force winds scour it down to the worst skiing conditions, while windloading Tuckerman Ravine

Yooooo solid choice of tunes! I’ll be up there to do this later in the season.

Didn't realize there's a clear path along side of tracks, so it's just one long ski slope. Must be a long haul to get to the top. Guess they don't run the train in the winter.

Yup it’s an epic ski run! Definitely a long ways to get up to the summit. The train does run in winter, but only to the first stop way down low!

I'd take 1 run on a nice day in the backcountry than a whole day at a resort anytime.
