Tom Cruise as Les Grossman is almost like the comedy version of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. He's in a few scenes tops and practically steals the movie in a cast where you can tell everyone is having a blast.
"I'm a dude (Neil Armstrong) playing a dude (Father O'Malley) disguised as another dude (Sgt. Lincoln Osiris)." Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) has completely forgotten who he is... Kirk Lazarus was pulled from the refrigerator upon reentry to Earth's atmosphere and through his agent found he had to be a gay priest. Of course Neil Armstong lacked acting experience, but went for Immersive Acting, but without the ability to remember his lines he dropped that and let the script read him. Why not? He's a strong astronaut who usually succeeds at things, but Neil Armstrong found it was hard to lose the persona of being gay and not knowing how to be a black man chose the "Roots" character of Chicken George for his accent, but no doubt it was unnerving to see himself in the mirror when he heard he was scared of himself. Neil Armstrong probably found it hard to understand himself as a black man. You gotta give credit to Tugg Speedman for knowing how to crack his opponent during an argument.

I still remember seeing this movie in the theater. The part where simple Jack says you make me happy I laughed so hard and loud the entire theater turned around and looked at me. Ahhh good times 😂
For Ben Stiller movie there is Zoolander and Starksy & Hutch, those two are my favourite the latter being a comedy remake of sorts of an old cop tv show. For a movie with a somewhat similar premise I reccomend Bowfinger with Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy.
I always wonder if the "I'm a rooster illusion." line in Tropic Thunder is a reference to Alice In Chains' song 'Rooster', which is a song about Jerry Cantrell's dad* in the Vietnam War.... 🤔 I'm sure you've heard the song 'Rooster' a hundred times, even if maybe you've never paid attention to the words. . But here: "Ain't found a way to kill me yet Eyes burn with stinging sweat Seems every path leads me to nowhere Wife and kids, household pet Army green was no safe bet The bullets scream to me from somewhere Here they come to snuff the rooster Yeah, here come the rooster You know he ain't gonna die No, no, no, you know he ain't gonna die" "Walkin' tall machine gun man They spit on me in my homeland Gloria sent me pictures of my boy Got my pills 'gainst mosquito death My buddy's breathin' his dyin' breath Oh god, please won't you help me make it through?" . Like it almost feels like Ben Stiller's character had it breakthrough realizing that he's playing this soldier part, but he's full of shit. Like he's just playing soldier like an idiot, realizing that actual soldiers actually went through this stuff. He's just a Rooster illusion. If it's not that, I have NO idea what it means. 🤷♂️ Seriously, what else could "I'm a rooster illusion" POSSIBLY mean? . *Jerry Cantrell Sr., whose childhood nickname was "Rooster"
FINALLY!!! I've seen sooo many people react to this movie and Samantha is literally the only one who recognized Lance Bass 😭😭😭 RDJ was nominated for Best Supporting Actor but lost to Heath Ledger(R.I.P) Now as far as "Black Face" I honestly wouldn't even consider what Kirk did Black Face because 1) he had surgery for his whole body and 2) he wasn't making fun of Black People(which is the point of Black Face) but simply trying to act like a black person though it was stereotypical. Now regardless of how you feel about it, the overall point was to show how far some Method Actors would go for a role no matter how ridiculous it is. What alot of people often miss is that Tropic Thunder is literally a parody of Hollywood Tugg- Hollywood Wash Out Who's Trying To Make A Comeback Kirk- Over The Top Method Actor Jeff- Drug Addict Alpha- Rapper Turned Actor Kevin- New Guy In The Industry All in all, Tropic Thunder is absolutely hilarious and imo it's Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr's Best Role 😂😂😂
Glad you finally got to Tropic Thunder. Stellar comedy and pure gold! Read up on all the trivia and do check the directors commentary of the movie as well. Lots of added value there :D
Fun fact, you can find the DVD commentary to this movie on UA-cam and RDJ STAYS in character until he's "done with the DVD commentary." Just like his character said, hahahahaha. It's amazing. Almost as funny as the movie.
Tropic Thunder is Ben Stiller's very best but Something about Mary directed by the Farrelly brothers is right there. In fact I'd say Mary and Me Myself and Irene with Jim Carrey are the hardest I've ever laughed in a theater.
Tropic Thunder is probably the most accurate description of how Hollywood really works. It's the only real mockumentary about the entertainment business.
Love that you're reacting to this! If you want another bizarre comedy that pulls back the curtain on movie production, you should check out Bowfinger with Steve Martin & Eddie Murphy. First time I watched I literally cried laughing for more than 10 mins. Freaking hilarious!
The fart movies Jack Black is doing (playing all the characters) are a direct reference to Eddie Murphy's Nutty Professor/Klump movies, which were being made at the time.
I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude. I remembered when RDJ was nominated for Best supporting Actor but lost to Heath Ledger. Also Ben Stiller wrote and directed this film during his time filming Spielberg's Empire of the Sun and how most of the actors took their roles to seriously and years later he had helped from Justin Theroux.
Too many people get angry about RDJ doing black face without watching or understanding the point of this movie. E whole thing is a satire of the movie industry. RDJ's role was a huge risk even at the time but he did it perfectly highlighting the utter stupidity of actors race swapping for a role no matter how talented they may be. Another play on this which almost everyone missed was that all the "Vietnamese" characters were speaking Mandarin throughout a more subtle joke about Hollywood and the west in general not bothering with accurate portrayal of Asian culture.
This isn’t the first time Robert has played an Australian, he was one in Natural Born Killers. As an Aussie, I find the accents he uses not true to real life… we don’t all sound like that
Every actor goes with the most extreme, most actors from other countries miss the American accents especially if they're doing a Southern and even many American actors from NY or CA do a terrible job with other American accents.
The entire cast did a superb job. Probably one of Ben Stiller's best movies. It should have won an Academy Award for Best Child Toss.
Died laughing when he tossed that kid
'Meet The Parents' and 'There's Something About Mary' are my favorite Ben Stiller movies.
He should have won Oscar
And the only time a white person would be allowed to be in black face..

I loved Samantha's "Is that Tom Cruise???" lol Was waiting for that. It really is his best role to date ... although I love him as Maverick as well. 🤣🤣🤣
My favorite facial expression is after the drug guy listens to les grossman the 1st time after they request ransom.
This movie is freaking awesome. I wanna see a whole movie with Tom Cruise as Les Grossman. He was hilarious. I also love that it's so politically incorrect.
"Same thing happened to me...they found me in an old refrigerator box trying to re-enter Earth's orbit."
Finally someone regonized the Platoon part :D This movie aged very well!
I have never heard Sam laugh so hard and so often since I subscribed.
The best is when they all showed up for the actual premiere and took photos out front on the red carpet. Everyone was like who isn’t in this movie???
Classic line, I don't read the script, the script reads me.
The panda scene kills me every time 🤣
Want to see Matthew McConaughey playing a unique character, you should watch Reign of Fire (2002). Also starring Christian Bale (pre Batman Begins) and Gerard Butler (pre 300).
I guess RDJ would have won that Best Supporting Actor Oscar if not for Heath Ledger
Tom Cruise's breakout roll was Risky Business a comedy,
"The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" is Ben Stiller's best direction and one of my favorite movies
Haven’t watched this in such a long time. A rewatch is definitely needed…..if only to see Halfsquat being thrown thru the air again….I laugh so hard I’m almost sick😂😂
There’s Something about Mary is an absolute must and similar (but different!) to Tropic Thunder, Bowfinger is a comedy worthy of a watch.
Something About Mary is a must lol. Great reaction as always. Bushels of red and green chili peppers from NM!
Thanks, TBR! Thanks, Samantha! 🌴 #TBRSchmitt #BenStiller #TropicThunder
I'm with Sam. Matthew McConaughey cracks me up in this movie. His obsession with the TiVo.
She picked up on the stuff that got me. Including Lance Bass.
I’ve read that when Tom Cruise called a surprised Ben Stiller and told him he wanted the part, he had 2 conditions: he wanted to look hideous and he wanted to dance. The rest is history…
Didn’t he also specifically ask for large forearms?
@@kjmorley Yeah could be. He obviously had certain studio execs in mind for the characterization. I’ve heard Joel Silver, and Scott Rudin. Have you heard anything else?
@@kjmorley hands
Stiller actually ran the script past Cruise, afraid that it went too far. They've been friends since they worked together on a series of comedy skits where Stiller played Cruise's stuntman. Cruise told him to make it and asked to be in. His two specific requests were he wanted in his words "fat hands" and a dance scene. See here: ua-cam.com/video/Sa-ch8H_5DE/v-deo.html
I gotta confess, I've been binge-watching so many reactors watching "The Last of Us" lately, that this reaction was the perfect comic relief! Your shock and delight at the innovative absurdity of Tropic Thunder was almost as fun as the movie itself! Congratulations on 100K subscribers, too!
It's one of the funniest movies ever made. A modern-day Blazing Saddles!
Several years prior to this, Stiller directed Cable Guy. In my eyes, that's by far his greatest achievement.
I always wonder if the "I'm a rooster illusion." line in Tropic Thunder is a reference to Alice In Chains' song 'Rooster', which is a song about Jerry Cantrell's dad* in the Vietnam War....
🤔
I'm sure you've heard the song 'Rooster' a hundred times, even if maybe you've never paid attention to the words.
.
But here:
"Ain't found a way to kill me yet
Eyes burn with stinging sweat
Seems every path leads me to nowhere
Wife and kids, household pet
Army green was no safe bet
The bullets scream to me from somewhere
Here they come to snuff the rooster
Yeah, here come the rooster
You know he ain't gonna die
No, no, no, you know he ain't gonna die"
"Walkin' tall machine gun man
They spit on me in my homeland
Gloria sent me pictures of my boy
Got my pills 'gainst mosquito death
My buddy's breathin' his dyin' breath
Oh god, please won't you help me make it through?"
.
🤷♂️
Seriously, what else could "I'm a rooster illusion" POSSIBLY mean?
.
*Jerry Cantrell Sr., whose childhood nickname was "Rooster"
Nick Nolte is a f’in legend. Check out “24 Hours” and “Another 24 Hours”, which also feature (a very early) Eddie Murphy.
It's "48 Hrs." and "Another 48 Hrs." but yes agreed, worth watching
@@paradox5391 He's talking about the edited versions. 😉
@@paradox5391I stand corrected.
One of the best comedies of all time.
Tom Cruise should have won an Oscar for this film. It's by far his best role and it is not even close.
Respect TBR you knew the best bits to keep in
FINALLY!!! I've seen sooo many people react to this movie and Samantha is literally the only one who recognized Lance Bass 😭😭😭 RDJ was nominated for Best Supporting Actor but lost to Heath Ledger(R.I.P)
Now as far as "Black Face" I honestly wouldn't even consider what Kirk did Black Face because 1) he had surgery for his whole body and 2) he wasn't making fun of Black People(which is the point of Black Face) but simply trying to act like a black person though it was stereotypical. Now regardless of how you feel about it, the overall point was to show how far some Method Actors would go for a role no matter how ridiculous it is. What alot of people often miss is that Tropic Thunder is literally a parody of Hollywood
Tugg- Hollywood Wash Out Who's Trying To Make A Comeback
Kirk- Over The Top Method Actor
Jeff- Drug Addict
Alpha- Rapper Turned Actor
Kevin- New Guy In The Industry
All in all, Tropic Thunder is absolutely hilarious and imo it's Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr's Best Role 😂😂😂
Such a great movie with excellent performances from just about everyone.
And Rain of Madness is hilarious too
Great reaction. Crazy how you didn't see all the references from 'Apocalypse Now',.. because you did react to it.
Maybe it's in the full reaction.
My favourite YT reaction to this movie!
Definitely jump on something about Mary as soon as you can. I’d love to see your reaction
Love that you're reacting to this! If you want another bizarre comedy that pulls back the curtain on movie production, you should check out Bowfinger with Steve Martin & Eddie Murphy. First time I watched I literally cried laughing for more than 10 mins. Freaking hilarious!
"The Giant foot is not trying to squash me!"
Welcome to Mind Head.
@@matthintz9468 😂😂🤣 "Happy premise 1: There are no aliens..."
I love movies about movie making! From Sullivan’s Travels to Singin’ in the Rain, Get Shorty, Tropic Thunder, The Player and many more!
12:45 I was being shown a praying mantis up close as a kid and the next moment I was staring at its face as it perched on my nose. They do that.
No one could believe it was Tom Cruise, saw it in cinema when it came out, so glad I did.
The scene where rdj smiles and laughs was him almost breaking character.
I never see you laugh this much. It's a golden film, top notch, that we may never see another like it... Awesome reaction though!
Jack Black’s jaw movements 🤣🤣
Haha. I always lose it when he yeets that child. It never gets old.
If Ledger hadn't overdosed, Downey would have won the Oscar.
Hi guys! I'm from Brazil! Super fan!
So, when Downey Jr, character says I don't break character til the DVD commentary. Hectically does that
Great movie.
As an Aussie, I find the accents he uses not true to real life… we don’t all sound like that
As a fellow Aussie I thought his accent in this isn't too bad. It's not the greatest but it's not too cockney English either
He wasn't trying to sound like all of you, just one of you :)
Every actor goes with the most extreme, most actors from other countries miss the American accents especially if they're doing a Southern and even many American actors from NY or CA do a terrible job with other American accents.
Best cinematic experience of all time
