A close friend of mine had a strong family history of breast cancer. Genetic testing was negative, yet she was diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer in her early 50s anyway. She was part of a special study, evaluating high-risk individuals with serial MRIs and even so, it was missed in the early stages, and she did go on to die of the disease. We don't have markers for all the familial incidents of breast and ovarian cancers, so a negative result wouldn't necessarily reassure me.

My aunt's test came back negative, then a few years after she died of breast cancer, the lab that tested her was found to be kinda shoddy and shut down. Her son tested positive for BRCA2 a while later.

Happens more than people think. Always try to get an outside second opinion.

I would never have had surgery without having a second and third opinion or test to confirm the diagnosis. It’s strange to me that the surgeon didn’t insist on more proof before doing something so radical as a double mastectomy. Everyone here was too willing to operate without being sure it was necessary.

I got my second opinion before making my decision to an outside Hospital.

But what if that second test was wrong?

How does she know they didnt provide a false negative? If they dont know the specific gene they were looking for, then its possible she got a false negative.

I have a very strong family history of breast cancer but none of the known genes can be found. This does not mean that there isn’t another gene involved. With such a strong history I would still go for the preventative surgery. I’m sorry she had this experience but it has still reduced the risk massively

I am going through this now. I was a part of a genetic study for Autism. 6 years later, I get notification from the study that I am BRCA positive. Family history includes my father, who had pancreatic cancer, and my great aunt who had breast cancer. I met with a genetic counselor and I repeated the lab work. I am waiting on those results as we speak.

I also was a part of spark genetic testing and luckily I found out as well.

I'm very pleased to have had genetic counseling and only wish I had gotten it years earlier when first hearing about it after Angelina Jolie's journey. While my genetic test wasn't the primary factor in opting for double mastectomy (biopsy results and a strong family hx were my reason) it did help me realize that I should opt for the mastectomy without reconstruction. Either way, I would still be getting MRI or mammogram and clinical exam every six months. My treatment choice brings a little more peace of mind as my grandmother and mother passed away young. I don't want that to happen to me. Going through the biopsy and finding out I could have prevented this was devastating. But going through it now and never want anyone to second guess. You only get one life. Protect yourself.

Both my mother and aunt had breast cancer. They are doing well now. My mum told me I could do the test at 18, strongly advised against it though. The test gives you.. Let's say a 80% possibility. Never 100%. So you could also always be in the 20%. It's a genetic lottery. Let's take a day at a time and always go to check-ups instead.

I think your approach is reasonable. I don't know why anyone would do such a surgery based on this genetic finding. These are always probabilities, not a certainty.

I totally agree unfortunately I think many women are doing these because they are trendy.

@waynethompson5955 ridiculous thing to say. I am having this surgery and there is nothing trendy about having your breasts amputated and months of recovery

She lost her breasts and the lab and doctors made a life altering mistake. This is a serious injustice she went through. I feel awful for her.

And now we know that most of these tests gave false positives and the CEO of the corp that developed the product might go to jail.

My heart goes out to these lovely women and the collective emotional distress they've undergone.
Just think; there are young girls out there who actually seek elective mastectomies and hystorectomies because they say "they don't feel like they're in the right body". Sigh...

Yeah it's even more concerning when you see private health insurance in aus are fully covering transgender surgery but if you have the gene mutation for breast cancer you need to pay anywhere up to $15-20,000 plus all the out of pocket hospital fees..., I was tested positive for BRACA2 in 2017 at the age of 26 and I was only given the full mastectomy option without the preventative surgery option. So I left the clinic feeling even more confused on my decision. 3 years later and I have to wait 2-3 years to have preventative surgery. The health system is very complicated to navigate atm due to COVID-19. Praying it gets better.

Good video I will not juge her because well we have to have empathy everyone problems are different but even if I had a DNA test unless it’s my only choice I won’t even think of amputation or removing a body part unless necessary and like I said my only choice just because you remove your breasts doesn’t mean that your safe from cancer and I trust my own doctor more then testing so for me that is a bit silly

Does this doctor say that the doctor the woman got tested by was not reputable then? He should be the one invited here and asked, not some random doctor who is trying to save face.

Never a good idea to do this kind of surgery.

Unless you've taken the test at least twice and a genetist says the chances of getting cancer are very very high (like 90%). I would still wait until I've breastfed my kids though (so at least 30) before I do it.

There is a company, named Precipio . Its accuracy is 99% on cancer diagnosis.
Ask your doctors to use it.

It’s not a stupid thing to do. Research it. Some of these genes give you up to a ninety percent t chance you could get cancer. And this surgery can take it down to less than five.
