I did have cancer, chemo, radiation and a mastectomy. I am now 4 weeks post a DIEP Flap breast reconstruction. I was so lucky because I have Angelina Joile's surgeon, Dr. Orringer and he's such an angel. I went from feeling completely mutilated and hopeless to feeling like a girl again. I put his picture on a vision board when I saw he was her surgeon and the universe aligned. Through many twists and turns he became my surgeon, even though I'm a member of the working poor. He treated me like I was a giant celebrity anyway!

For those of you saying it was a bad decision or a publicity stunt, you will only understand it when breast cancer hits you or a beloved one (mother, sister, wife). I had breast cancer and had a mastectomy, but because I waited to have it, I had chemo, I shaved my hair and now I'm afraid of mets. A friend of mine did the same as Angelina (doble mastec after positive BRCA gene) everyone told her she was crazy to do it. When patology results came back, she had cancer. CANCER people, not a cold!

The comments on this are horrible. This should have comments disabled. So much ignorance and hatred for a strong, very personal decision. I respect her for it. I don't really know anything else about her, but it's not fair to criticise her because of how she chooses to raise her children or her relationship. That's her personal life and so is this

    • @yasminbremnor5240

I agree maddie. Not even a murderer would get these vicious comments. U would think she's only person to have affair. No said it was right but I don't remember them having an out an out romance while he was still married If anything they tried to keep things very low but the chemistry between them was evident. But where proof they were in bed? People stop hating for no reason. If u hate her for witch movie don't watch her. If u hate for Brad especially without proof she's not the first an she won't b lazt an if u hate for operation its her choice an if u hate for no reason u can't b helped.

A strong, very personal decision that was wholly based on a lack of knowledge and a lot of fear. She has now passed this fear on to other women who may also place their trust in the medical establishment and faulty science. Epigenetics refutes completely every reason she had for cutting off her healthy breasts.
I suggest watching go2.thetruthaboutcancer.com/agq/episode-2/ and at least become more educated than Jolie (which wouldn't be difficult).
Jolie, being very much in the public eye has managed to make this "personal" decision very public and has yet again given the wrong message just as she has done in all other aspects of her celebrity life whether it be geopolitics or social issues.
The tragedy is people need role models and I'm afraid she's a very bad one indeed.

very courageous decision... and I made the same decisions (yes, two mastectomies, six months apart) for my family... twelve and eleven years ago. Sad thing is, no one thanked me for those decisions and spouse, now former, left me 2 1/2 years ago due to 'my insecurities'... and thank God he did... he actually freed me! I am so much happier now, and attempting bc recon one more time... failed before (10 surgs in 2-yr period).... yes, she made a courageous decision! thank you, Angi!

It's not all that easy to get bilateral prophylactic mastectomy unless you need it. Doctors will be reluctant to perform it and insurance sure as heck won't pay for it unless a woman is at very high risk. I don't think we're going to see a lot of copy-cat mastectomies among women who don't need them.

yeah but reducing your risk of breast cancer from over 80% to 5%... that's not normal odds for most risks we take. Ppl with this mutation know they have this risk and they have a chance to prevent something much worse ahead of time - that's why most decide to have preventative surgery. No one wants that surgery - but any other choice feels more drastic when you're in that situation. If you knew a plane had an 80% chance of crashing - would you still get on it? Most ppl wouldn't.

  • @bagobeans
    @bagobeans 11 років тому +1

Most insurance companies won't cover this. Did you know that? So how can this help those all over the globe? This is considered elective surgery. The other women who have had the same procedure, (hollywood actresess) have that kind of money.

If you could avoid the suffering of cancer treatment, why wouldn't you? Also, since she will look exactly like she did before except for some small scars, it's not mutilation.

2 weeks my Aunt called me and told me she had Breast Cancer. I was shocked and truly heart broken. We spoke how just a bit earlier Angelina went thru this, i think that was helpful for her to think about knowing her (my aunts) drastic choice wasn't "crazy".
I flew from Texas to Florida to care for her for 10 days after her double mastectomy. at the end of 6 days we were walking on the beach, day 12 after the surgery she was jogging on the beach. I am proud of women who have to deal with this stupid hateful disease

Cannabis does not cure all types of cancer. I had a friend who was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. She followed the Rick Simpson protocol to the letter and was assured she would recover because the cancer was caught relatively early. She also underwent conventional treatments at the urging of her family. Neither treatments worked and she proceeded to get weaker and sicker until she eventually died. So cannabis may help relieve some symptoms related to cancer, but in my experience it is not a cure.

This no laughing matter, if you have a history of prostate cancer in your family and or African American male, you should get this done. It can save your life, never mind what's causing prostate cancer and why it's going up ever year amongst men of every race. Just cut off the parts involve, it's life saving.

Radiation therapy used in cancer treatment doesn't build up. Even if you are talking about radioisotope therapy the radioisotope doesn't migrate to fat cells. Also radiation therapy is not the same as chemotherapy.
I'm not saying chemotherapy couldn't possibly cause long term sides effects. Just that wants the treatment stops the immediate effects starts to fade. When cancer metastasises the effects are far more gruesome.

  • @gfloyd100

She is not promoting "this idea of removing body parts essential to the survival of the human race." How is every breast in the world essential to the survival of the human race? I know at least two women personally who both have a family history of breast cancer. They have never even considered having their breasts removed when no sign of cancer was present. Not every woman removes her breast when breast cancer runs in the family!~

Actually, chemo can cause irreparable damage to the heart even though it has been stopped. I am in no way advocating for people not to use chemo as a form of treatment for cancer - I am just stating that unfortunately sometimes the "cure" can be very damaging to other organs. So, the negative effects of chemo do not fade for all patients.

Let me start by saying it is her body so she can do whatever she wants with it.
That said, Jolie is insane. She is not inspiring. She removed part of her body because a doctor told her she was at high-risk for cancer. That is crazy. Why not get the mastectomy IF you get cancer?
Talk of "faulty genes" reminds me instantly of eugenics.
    Who gets their genes tested?
This is sick. What kind of doctor operates on a healthy patient?
So much is wrong with this and everyone is calling her inspiring because she is a celebrity.
To her credit this decision was slightly less insane than marrying Billy Bob Thornton.

Melina Trimarchi The sane kind? Check the survival rates for breast cancer... Stage II breast cancer has a 93 percent survival rate. Only in the absolute latest stages of the disease is it likely fatal.
How about... if you are at high risk for cancer get screened twice a year? Jolie has ten times better healthcare than you or I... I mean have you ever had your DNA tested?
So a news program is allowed to tell me that cutting off parts of your body if you are completely physically healthy is OK and I am not allowed to criticize this stupidity?
Angelina: phobia of being hugged (even by her own mother), used knives and cutting in bed during sex, wore a shirt covered in blood to her own wedding, wore vials of husband's blood around neck and demanded her blood back from him when they divorced so he could not curse her, her father went public with concerns for her sanity... but no one is in a position to criticize her because she is famous and therefore an inspiration to dumb people everywhere.

Women, there's no need to do this. Alkalinity and/or balancing your body's pH (acid/alkaline) levels is all it takes to pull the rug out from under cancer, which needs an acidic physiological climate to survive. My own mother died from not doing this, while my friend's mother recently recovered from terminal cancer by doing it. Her main tools were a vegan diet, fruit/veggie smoothies, and alkaline water. And love.

I think she should have kept this to herself. Not every woman on this planet has enough money to undergo that operation just because some day they could possibly have cancer. She had better write a book on how to avoid or diminish that risk without having to go through surgery.
Just imagine half of the world with fake enhanced breasts, and the other half with removed breasts.
Leave them boobs alone, for God's sake!

Yes, sooooooooo sneaky of them. I never would've guessed it was from an interview from the past. I just assumed they clearly and very obviously, posted the wrong year on those interviews. Evidently, they thought we'd be fooled because she so openly spoke of her mastectomy in those older clips. (rolls eyes) So glad I wasn't the only one almost fooled by their blatant deceit. LoL 😏

Can you provide a single citation for a peer-reviewed study that substantiates either your claim that 1) the body's alkalinity can be changed through diet, or 2) the cancer risk of BRCA1 carriers can be modified through diet or lifestyle factors? Typically, a citation includes author, title of the medical journal article, name of the journal, and date of publication. I'll be waiting...

"She thinks nothing of of self-mutilation and mutilation of others" which means that she does not think about mutilating herself or others.
A mastectomy has nothing to do with cancer? It may have to do with breast cancer. How would her operation be an insult to those who HAVE suffered from cancer? So, it's a insult to those who have had cancer, but not to those who currently have cancer according to you.

"That woman just crossed a border... doesn't complain about anything..."
"The poor indeed are insensible of many little vexations which sometimes embitter the possessions and pollute the enjoyments of the rich. They are not pained by casual incivility, or mortified by the mutilation of a compliment; but this happiness is like that of a malefactor who ceases to feel the cords that bind him when the pincers are tearing his flesh."

I said what I said. She had a chance of getting breast cancer. She mad her own decision. What bothers me, is she flaunts it like it is a big deal. In America, people tend to worship actors. I don't know what it is like in you country, but we are saturated with everything she does, and some of us are getting tired of it. I think that is the point I am making. not everyone cares what she does.

That is not true radiation does not leave the system completely as it builds up in fatty tissues. My aunts immune system has been devastated by chemo and will never become 100% again, she is constantly ill due to its effects and it has been 4 years since she has undergone the treatment with no end in sight, the chemo destroyed her lymph nodes.

Believe me she didn't shout, I live in Iran. And she is huge here too unlike other trashy hollywood stars. And I found about it recently. I'm only 32. I went to this sonography?( you call it?) centre and I did found something wrong in my breast. It has nothing to do with cancer but still I need a surgery, thanks to Angelina causing awareness. Although I know most people don't have the money to go through the whole process, I mean what she did. But she has always been a wise woman.
