Its crazy to think if the main characters teamed up the people want want to overthrow Diavolo the fight would be easy. Since King Crimson is a close ranged stand he can't handle these very weird abilities like: Shrinking, metal coming out of your body, turning into cubes and a baby comes out of you, as a fishook goes into your body, and grow old.
To be honest, I always found Diavolo fascinating due to his paradoxical desires. He wants to stay anonymous, but he also wants power. Those that have power tend to draw the attention of others, and Diavolo is the head of the italian mafia. He's on a downward spiral of paranoia and covering his own tracks because of his lust for power.
He more so wants complete control of his fate, which does by extension mean he needs to secure himself through an elevated seat of power. This elevated position of power isn’t driven by a lust for power, but instead is indirectly driven by paranoia.
I felt a similar comparison with Kira. He wants to leave a quiet, peaceful life but keeps putting himself at risk of being persecuted because of his murderous tendencies.
One thing I love about diavolo is his dynamic with doppio it seems like doppio genuinely loves him makes me wonder what their interactions were prior. Also the fact he ACTIVELY pursued the protagonists of his part on their adventure was so cool to me definitely a great jojo villian
Kind of a shame that we didn't have Doppio earlier in the series, I think that would've made things a lot more interesting especially antagonistic wise - And could've made for a more solid twist.
Depending on how you look at it- My interpretation; Diavolo came into existence in order to protect Doppio, as split personalities are often formed as an extreme coping mechanism after some great trauma- such as learning about a mother you never knew about. Diavolo basically exists to do all the dark deeds Doppio himself can't, as an extreme form of self preservation. This is also why he is so extremely paranoid about anyone finding out about his identity. He is Doppio's shadow, the part of Doppio that he would rather hide away from the world. When the arrow was used the first time, King Crimson was awakened through Diavolo's will, or rather Diavolo *became* King Crimson. That's why we see K.C speaking as Diavolo quite a bit. However, when Chariot Requiem swapped bodies, as Doppio is the main soul he got separated from Diavolo, who essentially went rogue for the sake of self preservation.

@@xandold742 that's not at all what I meant, even though that is another valid interpretation. When I call Diavolo a Shadow, I am referring to the psychological shadow , as posited by Karl Jung. The Shadow is the part of our personality that we reject. Doppio would certainly reject Diavolo if he wasn't a split personality being "The Boss", but rather Doppio's own negative desires he had to cope with. Due to the split in personality, Doppio's Shadow got compartmentalized into "Diavolo". Unfortunately, due to a split psyche, Diavolo is able to take those desires to the worst possible extreme.
Both the japanese voice actor and american voice actor of diavolo really fit the character of diavolo. The japanese voice actor mostly remains calm and collected which fits diavolo's feux affably evil nature and his mysterious nature while his english voice actor sounds like The devil speaking which fits diavolo's whole personality: he is the devil incarnate.

A lot of people saw Diavolo's Infinite Death as a bit excessive for who he was, as in he was no question an villain but wasn't the most flat out unforgiving evil thing ever conceived like Cioccolata (the Mold guy) for example, and they asked Araki about this. His answer was along the lines of "That was Fate Itself's ultimate punishment for someone who constantly broke it" with Fate/Gravity being one of the absolute forces in Jojo's it was seen as there was no greater crime than to manipulate or alter it throughout one's entire life like Diavolo did. Now why Fate would give him the ability to alter itself in the first place if it was gonna hate him for using it is another question, then again you could see King Crimson/Epitaph as an anomaly that Fate didn't plan on having exist just like Diavolo himself with how nebulous his backstory is seeming like this anomalous birth.
I see it more as what emporio says at the end of part 6. Fate will allows side with justice. It may give you the power to overwrite it, but if you choose to be unjust with this power, fate will come for you.
It could also be an instance of "Fate" being angry at how often he manipulated it. Perhaps it was OK with Diavolo using his power, but because of his paranoia, he was using it near constantly on the drop of a hat.
It could be a kind of reference extending from the origin of his name, that being the devil. Since God is typically shown as permitting free will but ulitmately punishing those that abuse the gift, this could be an inspiration on diavolo as the devil became a fallen angel in typical depictions when punished by the ultimate force, and with fate being an absolute in Jojo it could be considered that diavolo suffered the same way
It could be a stretch to say but since Diavolo is meant to represent the Devil, aka Lucifer, Lucifer gave Eve the idea of temptation. Eve had the ability to eat the apple but Lucifer tempted her to do so. Diavolo had the temptation to break/challenge fate and he bathed in the opportunity and as such, was punished by being cast into hell.

What I really like about Diavolo is his insanity, or more particularly how it's written. The previous main villains always had their sides of madness (especially Kira), but Diavolo is just unnerving. Like, seriously uncomfortable. I think one of the factors is that, unlike all the previous main villains, he is not a calm person *at all*. There's a video called "Diavolo's angry adventure" and it's not called that just for the joke : the dude seems like he is always screaming, making him feel incredibly unhinged and dangerous. Even his stand is unnvering with both its faces always baring their teeth in a rictus of mad rage. I could go on, but this dude actually feel like a crazy person with too much power, like you found some weird junkie in a back alley, talking and growling to himself and ready to stab you with a rusted nail at any moment.
I’m one of the Diavolo defenders. I’m not going to try to argue he’s a good DID rep (although I will point out Araki did his homework, and it’s far more accurate to how DID works than, say, Toko Fukawa or other notables), but my hot take is that Diavolo in Golden Wind is everything DIO in Stardust Crusaders could have been. DIO’s biggest failing as an antagonist was that he was not an active character. He was sitting on his throne, waiting and sending goons after the hang, whereas Diavolo hunts them down and comes close to killing everyone MANY times.
I think part of the reason for that was the inclusion of the Egyptian based stand users in part 3 - Now, I love Darby as a villain, but some of the other ones just made the story a bit too sluggish at points.

@@xord6286 There are tons of hints to Diavolo and Doppio being clear examples of exaggerated DID (First time seeing JoJo exaggerating something?) - the whole soul thing is more of the world-building part of the show's world where souls and fate are actual existing entities.
Part 5 is very interesting in how it's written, and while Diavolo isn't my favorite antagonist in the series, he serves his role very well as an intimidating and oppressive force against the heroes.
Diavolo is my favorite villain in JoJo and it's so pathetic that contemporary fanfic writers seem to portray him based on the memes alone, writing him as a raving buffoon who screams "Do not come close to me" all the time, and can be ambushed and killed by any Stand user if they get the drop on him, including Koichi and f*cking Fugo.

Diavolo is in my eyes the most evil villain of jojo. Dio might be evil but there were people he did care about or at least respected (his mom, jonathan and pucci), kars cared for his team and respected nature and pucci and funny valentine were well intentioned extremists. Diavolo has no redeeming qualities and that makes him more evil. Kira has no redeeming qualities too but is Complety overshadowed by diavolo.
I would argue that Kira has one redeeming quality. He wants to live a quiet life with the exception of the hand obsession, which he doesn’t go into too often. While I’m not defending his actions, since he did need to be stopped, had Josuke and friends not started to actively pursue him, he probably would have just spent the rest of his life just occasionally killing one person and then just leaving it at that.
For me its the fact that he sees himself as completely righteous. Dio knew he was evil and reveled in it. Pucci and Valentine had a greater goal and that justified their evil means, but were still aware of the wrongness of their actions. Meanwhile Diavolo truly sees himself as touched by fate. He thinks everything he does is fates will and that all he is doing is just. He is the one that stands above everyone else and can mistreat them however he wants.

Emperor Crimson is not only such a badass Localized name, it also makes tons of sense considering Diavolo's character. Not only does it remind me of the naming style of Part 3 (Tarot Card + color), but it also works because of the hierarchy of royalty. The Emperor is the highest rank you cab reach in royalty, with king being the second highest, which fits Diavolo to a T. Diavolo isn't just a Boss. He is THE Boss. The Boss of all the other Bosses in Passione. Like how an Emperor could be considered a King of Kings.
Imagine if Emperor Crimson is the actual Stand associated with the "Emperor" Tarot card since Diavolo almost 100% got his Stand before Hol Horse Not true since the real name is King Crimson but eh.

Think of it like this, a king gets to rule their kingdom that makes up like several villages and a few cities. But an Emperor rules over many, many kingdoms and other minor powers The King of Briton, the Sultan of Arabia, and the many different major and lesser kings and monarchs of Europe and the Mediteranean were historically subordinate powers to the Emperor of Rome before it's collapse, so that should give you an idea of the hierarchy between Kings and emperors
Oh my god, I just realized something. We have a villain that does horrible things, kills anyone who gets in his way and doesn't want anyone to know who he is while being named the Devil. That is genius.
Don't forget that he is defeated by the son of Dio (which is the Italian word for God). I also think that there is a verse somewhere about Jesus crushing the devil under his heel, and Giorno primarily attacks by kicking (although he switches to punching by the end of the part unfortunately) which may be a reference to that verse, though I don't know for sure. As for Diavolo, don't forget that he was born from a woman in a prison with no father, and tries to kill his only daughter so that he can continue to enslave the world under his rule. So, he is sort of a subversion of God. He even is his own trinity as well, being Diavolo/Doppio/King Crimson (father, son, and holy ghost). And much like the devil, he is constantly searching for a way to escape his fate, since he is aware of the future (sort of like how the devil is trying to change the future described in Revelations so that he wins in the end, since his failure leads to him dying in the lake of fire for all eternity, which is sort of parallelled with Diavolo's infinite deaths). The hiding of his identity is of course a reference to "the greatest lie the devil ever told is that he doesn't exist". But it really is the case. We don't know actually know the name of the devil. Devil is just a singular form of Devils, which is synonymous with demons (it really just depends on translation which term is used as far as I can tell). As for Satan, that is also just the singular of Satans, which is the Jewish term for adversary, and so is actually less specific than Demon/Devils since it could refer to human adversaries. Lucifer is just the name of the Morning star in astrology and is another name for Mercury and as a direct reference to astrology it isn't meant to be the literal name for the devil, merely using the astrology of the morning star as an analogy to the Devil's fall from heaven (there is also another analogy in the form of The King of Tyre to corroborate the references to the actual event, so we know at least the event happened even though its not directly written about). Then the Bible mentions Gabriel and Michael as the arch angels but doesn't give the names of any other (or at least I can't remember it ever doing that). However, there are 4 books of the Bible that are controversial and considered non-canon by most people (called the Apocrypha, and it does actually directly write about the devil's fall from heaven rather than refer to it in analogies), but in some of these books it mentions specifically how many archangels there are (7) and even names ALL 7 of them! HOWEVER, it doesn't mention which one specifically is the devil, meaning we still don't know his name (assuming he wasn't an 8th unnamed one). But its interesting that the books that give us the closest chance of knowing the Devil's name happen to be the books that are called non-canon and barely anyone knows about them anymore, or just dismiss them. Even if they truly aren't canon all along (and there is good reason to think they are to be fair), its still an amusing coincidence. So yeah, he has pretty much successfully hidden his name from history, which is interesting. So Diavolo is very much an accurate portrayal of the devil by being so elusive.

You see, the devil has a weird conundrum to deal with : on one hand he wants to rule everything, on the other hand he is literally the most evil being in existence so, unless they are particularly insane or corrupt, no one will follow him willingly. So what does he do ? He hides, he lies, and he has covers and scapegoats ready. This is very much what Diavolo does, Passione allows him to rule and have power and influence while he can hide his identity and even his very existence. Doppio is his cover while he hides from the world, and another layer of protection that he will discard if it fits him.
There'd need to be a VERY good explanation on how his personality shifted. Either that, or make him more morally grey like a JoJolion antagonist. But if it was done well, it'd be one of the best twists for sure.
I think it's more supportive of Giorno's beliefs to have the mafioso he saved just be a normal guy. In the same way that I prefer Josuke's savior to not be "future Josuke" like people theorized, making such a formative moment in a character's life be due a random passerby helps make the character feel more human or relatable since it's a moment anyone could have been in the middle of.
Another parallel between Giorno and Diavolo is the dichotomy of control. Giorno can't fully control the creatures he makes, as they have their own will and must adapt accordingly. He also relinquishes control frequently to his teammates during battles, even when he is uncertain of how things will pan out - he puts his faith in his team. His trust and willingness to yield the situation to those he trusts builds a collective strength that he could not have on his own. Diavolo lusts for control, so he will use whatever force he deems necessary to ensure he's in control, even to his own detriment. King Crimson is a stand that completely controls the situation, leaving his foes helpless. When his control falters, he pouts like a child.
another parallel between them are their childhood. giorno had a horrible mother and an abusive father, while diavolo was adopted by a humble and kind family that lives around the coast. giorno was already exposed to the life of crime ever since he was a kid and he already start doing criminal acts as a kid. diavolo only started doing crimes after he took control of their body, killed his adoptive parents, then burn the whole village. diavolo or should i say doppio could've been a kind soul if it wasn't for diavolo, while giorno could've been evil and cruel if it wasn't for his kindness of saving a random mafia. they have opposite upbringings, yet their fates vary.
Part 5 has really grown on me after reading and watching it multiple times now. Part 8 is my favorite but Bruno is one of the best jojo characters out of every part for sure. Diavolo was an interesting concept with the two personalities and I loved his fight with risotto

I think the design of King Crimson helps display Diavolo's paranoia. Constantly fish-eyed, grinding his teeth, perpetually in a state of distress, anger, horror, and a whole lot of other emotions that all fall under the umbrella of "Tweakin'".
I had this eureka moment when replying to a comment; Diavolo wants to remain a shadow in the world because he is *Doppio's* shadow, as Karl Jung defines it. He is the part of Doppio who split off due to the trauma of meeting his mother for the first time, the part that if Doppio were whole, he would want to hide from both the world and himself. The Shadow is the part of our personality that we typically reject. A shadow personified would certainly hide himself, because hes the part Doppio would seek to hide. Once the two were truly separated from one another by Chariot Requiem, Diavolo had a radical shift in personality. He is far more aggressive, and far more arrogant. He was no longer bound to Doppio's subconcious desires. A shadow unleashed.

Diavolo is honestly one of my favorites of JoJo's villains, I just find him very interesting, like his general design and mystique, and he has my favorite stand of all time.
Vento Aureo is a very symbologically loaded part and you can't do its thematics justice with only a few words: Many different characters spiral into their own arcs that are tied to the overarching themes, but what makes it all the more special is how these characters' arcs interact with one other. To grossly oversimplify, though, it could be said that Vento Aureo is about self-acceptance, unwavering determination in the face of even inevitable destiny, and the extent of the power of the indomitable human spirit. It's a tale of Human V Destiny: How the human nature and our capacity to dream, love, and hold within ourselves an extraordinarily intense willpower can overcome even the inevitable forces of Destiny that work against us. But for all that that's worth, though, you can't do that unless you're determined to. And you can't be determined to do any of that if you don't believe in yourself, if you don't love yourself: Someone who doesn't accept themselves and doesn't believe in themselves will falter and fail in the face of a challange such as breaking the order of Fate. Across Vento Aureo much of the journeys of the gang focus on their own self-acceptance, and the power it unlocks within them: Narancia's betrayal of the Boss was only possible because of the love for himself that Bucciarati cultivated within him, Trish only unlocked her true potential after facing her fears and conquering her weaker self in the Notorious B.I.G. fight, etc. But, on the other side of the picture, we have Diavolo. Diavolo's actions aren't a result of him wanting to overcome himself. And never does he intend to overcome Destiny. No, Diavolo enforces Destiny, because Diavolo is Destiny. Destiny is always on Diavolo's side: That's a core concept of his character. He is the force of destiny, and we know that because even at the very end, even as Giorno unlocked Gold Experience Requiem and the power of the Removal of Effect, Epitaph still foretold Giorno's death. Epitaph's predictions are always right: It's the force of destiny. And what we see through Epitaph is Diavolo's victory. Destiny still on the side of Diavolo to the very last moment. It was only through the combined dreams and willpowers of the whole gang, manifested in the Arrow that was delivered to Giorno and in Gold Experience Requiem's power to overcome even the inevitable forces of destiny, that Diavolo could finally be defeated. But it doesn't end there: Before this battle, what was Diavolo even trying to do? With his concealment, with his erasure of every trace if his identity? With his desire to kill Trish? The whole time, Diavolo was fleeing from his past. He was fleeing from his identity. Diavolo's entire character revolves around this obsession with erasing and destroying his past so that it may never come to haunt him: That's why he kept trying to hide, and destroy his identity, and even kill Trish, the only link to his past that was still around after his crusade against himself Now, flashback to earlier in this comment: The gang spent their whole journey conquering themselves, facing their pasts, accepting themselves, because that's the foundation for the power of Human Resolve: Self-acceptance. Self-love. Diavolo, though, rejected himself: He spent his whole life trying to get rid of his past, ensuring none of it could ever come back to haunt him ever again: He ignored the truth of the world, avoided it altogether in his attempt to be perfect in his eyes. And that led to his defeat. Remember what Giorno said immediatelly after unlocking GER? "The only thing that will survive is the truth of this world. Righteous actions born of truth shall never be destroyed". This is what he was talking about: That which is done whole-heartedly, abiding by the truth of who and what you are, will never be destroyed, even if you die: Bucciarati, Narancia, Abbachio, they may have all died, but what they did, they did from the bottom of their hearts, respecting and never straying from their flawed human nature. And it was their acceptance of their flaws, their respect for their past failures, that made their actions result in the victory of Giorno. But Diavolo? Diavolo spent his entire life running from himself, rejecting himself: He spent his whole life rejecting his past failures and his flawed human nature, and thus his actions were not born of truth. That is why he failed: Because even if Destiny is by your side, even if you embody the forces of Fate, even if the world itself chooses you to stand tall above all others, nothing can win against the force of the indomitable human spirit. It goes even farther: For example, Diavolo, to enforce his control over the gang, to enforce his reign of terror, he enforced precisely that: Terror. Diavolo spent his time as head of Passione enforcing stagnation and repetition. When Diavolo was boss, he kept the exact same status quo in place for as long as he could: A secret identity, a very specific way of operating, and a reign of terror over Passione. You can even find this reflected in Bucciarati's character: When Bucciarati died, he told Giorno that "his soul had been fated to slowly die, but it was reborn" when he met Giorno. His soul had been fated to die (literally: Rolling Stones foretold Bucciarati's death in Venice until Mista broke fate with his resolve, but that's another even longer story) because he was too terrified of the prospect of rebellion against the Boss to actually do anything about the drug trade he despised. He, along with everyone in the gang, hated the way Passione was running things, but none dared to do anything about it. They were doomed to repeat that cycle of endless dismay and inaction forever. Diavolo's law of repetition seeping into their very souls. That is, until Giorno came along. Giorno may not be a leader: That role was Bucciarati's. But what Giorno was is the spark that lit their flaming hearts. Giorno's character is centered around innovation, rebellion, and revolt against the status quo: He also hated the drug trade (to children at least), but whereas the gang was too terrified to do anything, Giorno planned to face it head on, no matter what. Why Giorno was capable of this is down to his inheritance and the fact that he was a child of both Dio and Johnathan, but the fact of the matter is, he was, and he did. And Giorno's unwavering resolve was what brought the gang on their journey: It was Giorno who lit the spark of hope of willpower within Bucciarati. It was Giorno who inspired Bucciarati's decaying soul to take a stand against Diavolo. It was Giorno who tied the resolves of the entire gang together: It was Giorno who awoke the Sleeping Slaves of the gang, and brought them to break Fate. Giorno and Diavolo share a duality in that Giorno is the embodiment of change and rebellion, whereas Diavolo is the embodiment of stagnation and repetition. Diavolo's insidious hand was withering the souls of the gang away, and only Giorno's nature as an indomitable force of rebellion could change that.
I love him for how OUT-THERE he is as a main villain. Also, everything that happened in Parts 3 to 6, bro caused them indirectly. BTW, it's "Passioné", not "Passion". Love that we can hear Diavolo's ASB theme in the video.
I think a point in support of the idea of Diavolo being a foil to Giorno as well as an example of what makes Giorno stand out from other Jojos protags is one Eyepatch Wolf mentioned, as Giorno rarely fights another stand user solo compared to past Jojos. Aside from Bucciarati and Babyface, he always has another stand user on his side helping him, which is an important detail to consider when analyzing themes of solitude vs comeraderie
Kira and Diavolo are my favorite jojo villains close second being the president of the united states. King Crimson is not only one of my favorite bands but also one of my favorite stands tying in first place with killer queen. I love your videos dude keep it up
I think Diavolo is a really cool concept villain. He and King Crimson are basically one and the same. He's a rogue parasitic stand that attaches itself to other people to hide in.

Makes you wonder how different the story would be if Diavolo were more trusting. Would Passione continue to grow in power? Would Trish continue her father’s legacy in crime? Would Polnareff still be a turtle?
Wow, i was not expecting to hear Diavolo's english voice in the opening, since the JoJo dub gets a lot of hate, nice to hear this underappreciated masterpiece in a video!
Golden Wind is my favorite Part of JoJo and I love Diavolo as villain. Sure he isn’t as fleshed out as say Dio, Kira, or Pucci but I think that kinda adds to Diavolo’s character in the sense we know about Diavolo about as much as the main group does adds to discovering his identify.

I think Diavolo is a evolution on DIO in part 3, not in the sense of thematics or character, but in presentation. Araki learnt from how he use DIO in part 3, and in part 5 Diavolo does what DIO did in part 3 but better, and being more actively involved in the plot and journey.
Agreed. Personally I feel like DIO being in Part 1 made his presence in terms of being a mystery less effective in the story - yes the characters don't know about him much and both them and the audience don't know what his stand is, but based on Part 1 the audience still knows his history, which takes out a lot of the mystery. Diavolo on the other hand keeps that mystery all throughout, with many theories able to be made on who he truly is and represents. I don't hate Part 3 DIO, but I find Diavolo a much more compelling antagonist imo
Diego was way more brutal and dickish than I expected after everything I heard about him from others. Very awesome character. Ironically I feel like Valentine ran into part 3 Dio’s problems. Although we know about him very early on, and there’s a few scenes with him that cause tension (anything with him and Lucy in the same room), he really doesn’t do anything active until the final arcs and just kinda swoops in when most of the work has been done by other people. His speech at the end is great but I don’t feel like it really recharacterized his earlier actions, and unlike Dio he doesn’t really have a strong sense of rivalry with anyone
My big issue with Diavolo is that mystique is his big thing, his identity is the big mystery of the part, the story makes finding out who he actually is a big fucking deal. And that goes absolutely nowhere. Diavolo's identity has no real relevance to the plot. He isn't someone important and, contrary to what assassin group and Bucciarati's group thought, it has absolutely zero relevance to how to defeat him. He isn't defeated because he has some big secret that could lead to his downfall, he loses because of a mcguffin that wasn't foreshadowed at all, brought by a character that wasn't alluded to before, who contacts the main characters via means he was never demonstrated to have. Take the mystery away and all we are left with is this very barebones character that a lot of people only really care about because he is physically grafted onto his much more likable subordinate.
Recently I (a former anime-only) went back to read all the manga of Jojo’s and it’s crazy how much more likable the anime made Giorno. Something about him just felt really boring in the manga, and he got shilled by the other characters more often. It’s to the point that, where I see anime Bucciarati as a deuteragonist, I did not see manga Bucciarati as one.
I remember when I finished reading, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I thought about Diavolo. Not just for obvious reasons but for textual reasons from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, i.e. Diavolo wanting to rule then underworld while remaining anonymous is similar to Mr. Hyde and taking all the heat in for Dr. Jekyll.
Another thing I find it cool about Diavolo is that he's a manifestation of the current status quo. I've read somewhere that there's a bunch of ways on how to make a villain effective. One of these ways is to show how the world has changed for the worst thanks to his presence. That way, even if he's not on screen, you can feel the consequences of what he's done. We start part 5 in Italy, and passione has been ruling the country for quite some time. We see the drugs, the children getting addicted, the mafia wars and the crime rate being 8-10x more than anywhere else in the world iirc. It's not a pretty picture, and that's why we have some scenes of people being bribed, the old ladies asking Bruno to help their addicted son, etc. This is all because of Diavolo. Granted, we could've seen a bit more of this as the story progressed, but I can understand that time constraints and the limited space of a manga chapter often get in the way of that, as Araki himself spoke about during interviews. All in all, I think that Diavolo is one of the best villains in JoJo.
I have DID, and what I love is that Diavolo isn’t a villain because of his condition. Often times the media makes DID out to be this massive scary disorder in which the people afflicted with it are out to kill. It is a massive and scary disorder, but really only for the people with it. We’re statistically more likely to be taken advantage of and hurt because of a lack of cohesion in our brains. Araki however just uses DID as an aspect of Diavolo’s character, showing that he was just always this messed up guy, and wasn’t evil because of his disorder. It’s not perfect representation for DID, but it’s a hundred times better than what’s typically shown, and for that I love it.
He falls flat in the finale, showing he's quite shallow once you remove Doppio, but everything before that, including the Venezia fight and all of the stuff in Sardinia is really great
Fab video, Diavolo is my second favorite jojo antag & this video helped me a lot to understand him a bit more i knew he was paranoid & mentally not all there, but I was struggling putting the dots together with this guy, it's one of those things when you here someone say something you didn't think of & your like "that makes sense" but at the same time feeling dumb for not thinking it sooner😅 Will also say as well why I think Diavolo is underrated by a lot of people when it come to villan writing (you've mentioned it in your Kira video) are the usual sympathetic back stories/relatable mo, I still see a lot of people online staying that's the only way to write antagonists, hell it probably didn't help that it was maybe some what more vague than usual, or at least you need to pay more attention to it when watching/reading lol

Golden Wind Now that’s out of the way, finally an in depth analysis of my favorite villain. I love diavolo for all the reasons mentioned and I’m sad people don’t really give him the credit he deserves. I’m interested in that Giorno video since years ago you said you didn’t really like him that much. I understand what araki was going for with him but he looses a ton of personality once he joins the gang. I really liked how his stand despite how half of the abilities it starts out with never get used again, reflect his nature very well. He has the heart of Jonathan and the cunning nature of Dio. His damage reflection perfectly symbolizes how he starts off gentle, but can quickly turn ruthless when not shown respect. Going in detail on things like that will be really fun. Looking forward to more videos from you.
Y'know, it just occurred to me that I may have taken some kind of inspiration from Diavollo in characterizing Baphomet, the demon king of the 4th circle of hell, in my setting; because, much like how criminal organizations work, the title of demon king is claimed through offing the current ruler of a particular circle. And, much like Diavollo, Baphomet responds to this by ruling his circle from the shadows (though, a little more literally because he quite literally cursed the entire circle with darkness only penetrable by supernatural light) - specifically constructing a figurehead democracy to mask the kraterocratic monarcho-dictatorship at its heart, while also erasing record of his existence.
Diavolo/Doppio is, in my opinion, a pretty weird case of trauma-induced Dissociative Identity Disorder. Polnareff identifies that this likely stemmed from childhood trauma, but let's look into how that manifests. The 'Diavolo' personae is at once obsessed with power and anonymity, which suggests that he cannot bear anyone know who he is/was but still wants power and control over his surroundings in order to feel safe. He'll go through any lengths to achieve this impossible goal. Compare to Doppio, who's a cheerful, friendly (unless pressed) young man who's completely oblivious to the fact that he and 'Boss' are one and the same. Since DID sufferers tend to be unaware of the 'splinters', it seems to me that the person they were before the abuse was more similar to Doppio than Diavolo, and Diavolo was basically a protector of Doppio while he was being abused, as he's strong, powerful, merciless, and brutal, everything the boy wasn't when the abuse happened. Diavolo was supposed to be coping mechanism/protector for a frightened child, but metastasized into a monster.
Diavolo is better understood as the concept of “destroying your past to create a new future” personified. Everyone in the Gang is a delinquent that’s down on their luck, they destroyed their previous lives and are gangsters who are trying to find a new life. Giorno is different, yes he’s the son of dio (a man who also threw away his adopted family) Giorno has a relationship with his past as a weak child. At the top of this hierarchy of gangsters who constantly escape the past is Diavolo, a man who uses his child self and has perfected- I’ve listened to the part of the video where you pointed out that the team is a Foil. That was basically my comment.
19:08 While it is technically true that him being the son of Dio doesn't really play a role in the plot, as we never see him interact with sny of the followers of Dio and if we're being honest the connection was only made because that is one of the only ways this story could have happened, the idea of Giorno being Dio's son does still play a role in the story when it comes to Giorno's character, even if it's not very obvious. Giorno was created to be a mix between the character of Jonathan and Dio, someone who has the passion and drive to obtain something greater from his life (among other things) that Dio showed in the first part, mixed with the good heart of Jonathan. I remember someone describing Giorno's story as "what if Dio the protagonist instead of the antagonist," noting that the first part of JoJo was essential more a story of Dio and his impacts on the family he entered than Jonathan, even noting that in the origional manga we are introduced to Dio before Jonathan. So, although Giorno being Dio's son does not play into the part in any literal way, it very much does spiritually. Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot to say GOLDEN WIND!
Diavolo reminds me of Silent Hill Downpour's weird entity often referred to as 'the void'; an ill defined red vortex that chases you in certain scenarios, in theory this is an interesting idea as not knowing WHAT is trying to kill you can make it more frightening by using the unknown but once you see its a weird red void you start wondering what its deal is and it can become less threatening and I feel like that kinda happened with Diavolo but to a much lesser extent since people actually like part 5 most of the time. Araki kept him in literal shadows for so long trying to leave a lot of him a mystery but theres a line between mysterious and just unwritten that he teeters on a bit too often, he either needed to be more mysterious or have more information I think.
Honestly, Diavolo is my favorite Jojo villain because, when you think about, he is basically a dark twist on the concept of a chosen one. Think about it: Doppio came from humble beginnings , his father long dead and his mother in prison, he was adopted by his town's priest and lived a relatively secluded, simple life. He was unskilled and unsure of himself by nature , but was destined to one day wield great power, with the caviat that he would have to struggle with his darker half all his life. Well, at some point or other, the darker half won, took complete control of their shared life, burnt their home town to the ground, built his empire and became the Diavolo we now know. We know for a fact that his infinite death was a punishment from Fate itself. But what if it wasn't JUST for breaking it , but also for taking away everything Doppio *could* have been and using that power for his own selfish ends and building his criminal enterprise on the corpses of countless innocents.
The whole theme behind Part 5 is basically revolving around taking down an Evil Tyrannical king. Diavolo sees himself as the one who stands above all things, and thus will not let anyone even dare to try and take his crown.
Ok, for giorno bit of being the son of dio, it was presented as a contrast for the personality of his father, of which has a beat by beat elements in their tragic pasts, but giorno being set apart to the path dio made was the golden righteous heart he inherited from Johnathan, setting him to a different path. Like a what if dio just go to a righteous path, along with his vigor, intellect and charisma.
Gold Experience. Also, I think I've learned more about these JoJo characters from these video than I know about my own father. These are amazing, and I hope we can see more like this in the future!
Even if there's not that much said directly in the part about Diavolo, there's a lot of hints that actually create quite a complete picture. Diavolo is an "artificial", secondary personality of Doppio - a lonely orphan who grew up in fear of the world. When you look deeper into these two characters' behavior, you can notice something interesting: Diavolo's personality is very clear, straightforward, stable, and extreme - he has very clear over the top values and goals. But Doppio? Doppio is a f--king mess - he's extremely unstable, looking sweet on the surface but very volatile inside, reacting with overwhelming aggression to being touched or even slightly pressured, having strange headaches and short-term memory losses all the time, obsessively repeating "ritualistic" moves and sounds (his "phone call" moments)... He's a "walking contradiction" as called by Risotto. Or, to put it simply, a very mentally unstable, traumatized person. And that's why I believe that Diavolo is a secondary personality subconsciously created by Doppio as a coping mechanism. Doppio felt powerless and small in the world so Diavolo became obsessed with power. Doppio lacked strong and guiding parental figure in his life so Diavolo became unusually caring, encouraging, and even gentle towards him despite being cruel to everyone else. Doppio was traumatized by his origins and afraid of his future, so Diavolo gained the ability to erase the time and ultimately run away from fate every time he gets in danger. And this also explains why Diavolo is so extreme - because in a way, his entire personality is just Doppio's painful coping mechanism.

I always did like Diavolo, mainly because he is such an interesting character to talk about when you put him in the same conversation as both Giorno and DIO. The three are literally a Bizarre Trinity being a dark reflection of the Holy Trinity. DIO being the apex and having everything Diavolo wanted with the former influencing the series in some way even after his death with his presence felt all over while the latter is forgotten after his defeat and forever banished into a never ending hell, and Giorno being the successor to that power that Diavolo craved for that only the true son of DIO could achieve. Honestly, make a video called “The Bizarre Trinity of Biblical Proportions” starring these three, what they represent and their roles in the narrative as a whole and you will have a banger of a video! I’ll definitely watch it! 🤩
My personal least favorite villain but that's only because Jojo sets the bar so goddamn high. I still consider Diavolo more interesting than like 90% of shonen antagonist. He's just really hurt by how little screentime he has (Doppio doesn't count) and the fact he's facing Giorno, the dangerously-close-to-a-mary-sue jojo.
add to the fact that once he got King Crimson, he didn't experiment. he could have used weapons, but he didn't, he instead only used the environment or his stands hands.
I'd argue Diavollo/Doppio's condition is actually a lot closer to OSDD (other-specified dissociative disorder), which is essentially a wastebasket term for any condition with DID-like characteristics but lacks a 1:1 comparison.
I’ve always held an appreciation for under appreciated characters such as Diavolo, Kars, and Jonathan. To me it feels like these characters are more or less victims are unfavorable circumstances.
Giorno being the son of Dio doesn't _necessarily_ tie into the plot itself, but it _does_ tie into its metanarrative; "Dio" being the Italian word for god, and "Diavollo" being the Italian word for devil, means Araki very intentionally made part 5 an allegory for the son of god overcoming the devil.
bu there´s also a fact that akari was depressed during the time that he was writing golden wing, so maybe he got a idea what the villian was supossed to be, bu this affected the creative process.

Its crazy to think if the main characters teamed up the people want want to overthrow Diavolo the fight would be easy. Since King Crimson is a close ranged stand he can't handle these very weird abilities like: Shrinking, metal coming out of your body, turning into cubes and a baby comes out of you, as a fishook goes into your body, and grow old.

To be honest, I always found Diavolo fascinating due to his paradoxical desires. He wants to stay anonymous, but he also wants power. Those that have power tend to draw the attention of others, and Diavolo is the head of the italian mafia. He's on a downward spiral of paranoia and covering his own tracks because of his lust for power.
He more so wants complete control of his fate, which does by extension mean he needs to secure himself through an elevated seat of power. This elevated position of power isn’t driven by a lust for power, but instead is indirectly driven by paranoia.
I felt a similar comparison with Kira. He wants to leave a quiet, peaceful life but keeps putting himself at risk of being persecuted because of his murderous tendencies.
One thing I love about diavolo is his dynamic with doppio it seems like doppio genuinely loves him makes me wonder what their interactions were prior. Also the fact he ACTIVELY pursued the protagonists of his part on their adventure was so cool to me definitely a great jojo villian
Kind of a shame that we didn't have Doppio earlier in the series, I think that would've made things a lot more interesting especially antagonistic wise - And could've made for a more solid twist.
Depending on how you look at it-
My interpretation; Diavolo came into existence in order to protect Doppio, as split personalities are often formed as an extreme coping mechanism after some great trauma- such as learning about a mother you never knew about.
Diavolo basically exists to do all the dark deeds Doppio himself can't, as an extreme form of self preservation. This is also why he is so extremely paranoid about anyone finding out about his identity. He is Doppio's shadow, the part of Doppio that he would rather hide away from the world.
When the arrow was used the first time, King Crimson was awakened through Diavolo's will, or rather Diavolo *became* King Crimson. That's why we see K.C speaking as Diavolo quite a bit.
However, when Chariot Requiem swapped bodies, as Doppio is the main soul he got separated from Diavolo, who essentially went rogue for the sake of self preservation.

When I call Diavolo a Shadow, I am referring to the psychological shadow , as posited by Karl Jung.
The Shadow is the part of our personality that we reject. Doppio would certainly reject Diavolo if he wasn't a split personality being "The Boss", but rather Doppio's own negative desires he had to cope with.
Due to the split in personality, Doppio's Shadow got compartmentalized into "Diavolo". Unfortunately, due to a split psyche, Diavolo is able to take those desires to the worst possible extreme.

Both the japanese voice actor and american voice actor of diavolo really fit the character of diavolo. The japanese voice actor mostly remains calm and collected which fits diavolo's feux affably evil nature and his mysterious nature while his english voice actor sounds like The devil speaking which fits diavolo's whole personality: he is the devil incarnate.

A lot of people saw Diavolo's Infinite Death as a bit excessive for who he was, as in he was no question an villain but wasn't the most flat out unforgiving evil thing ever conceived like Cioccolata (the Mold guy) for example, and they asked Araki about this.
His answer was along the lines of "That was Fate Itself's ultimate punishment for someone who constantly broke it" with Fate/Gravity being one of the absolute forces in Jojo's it was seen as there was no greater crime than to manipulate or alter it throughout one's entire life like Diavolo did.
Now why Fate would give him the ability to alter itself in the first place if it was gonna hate him for using it is another question, then again you could see King Crimson/Epitaph as an anomaly that Fate didn't plan on having exist just like Diavolo himself with how nebulous his backstory is seeming like this anomalous birth.
I see it more as what emporio says at the end of part 6. Fate will allows side with justice. It may give you the power to overwrite it, but if you choose to be unjust with this power, fate will come for you.
It could also be an instance of "Fate" being angry at how often he manipulated it. Perhaps it was OK with Diavolo using his power, but because of his paranoia, he was using it near constantly on the drop of a hat.
It could be a kind of reference extending from the origin of his name, that being the devil. Since God is typically shown as permitting free will but ulitmately punishing those that abuse the gift, this could be an inspiration on diavolo as the devil became a fallen angel in typical depictions when punished by the ultimate force, and with fate being an absolute in Jojo it could be considered that diavolo suffered the same way
It could be a stretch to say but since Diavolo is meant to represent the Devil, aka Lucifer, Lucifer gave Eve the idea of temptation. Eve had the ability to eat the apple but Lucifer tempted her to do so.
Diavolo had the temptation to break/challenge fate and he bathed in the opportunity and as such, was punished by being cast into hell.

What I really like about Diavolo is his insanity, or more particularly how it's written.
The previous main villains always had their sides of madness (especially Kira), but Diavolo is just unnerving. Like, seriously uncomfortable. I think one of the factors is that, unlike all the previous main villains, he is not a calm person *at all*.
There's a video called "Diavolo's angry adventure" and it's not called that just for the joke : the dude seems like he is always screaming, making him feel incredibly unhinged and dangerous. Even his stand is unnvering with both its faces always baring their teeth in a rictus of mad rage.
I could go on, but this dude actually feel like a crazy person with too much power, like you found some weird junkie in a back alley, talking and growling to himself and ready to stab you with a rusted nail at any moment.
I’m one of the Diavolo defenders. I’m not going to try to argue he’s a good DID rep (although I will point out Araki did his homework, and it’s far more accurate to how DID works than, say, Toko Fukawa or other notables), but my hot take is that Diavolo in Golden Wind is everything DIO in Stardust Crusaders could have been. DIO’s biggest failing as an antagonist was that he was not an active character. He was sitting on his throne, waiting and sending goons after the hang, whereas Diavolo hunts them down and comes close to killing everyone MANY times.
I think part of the reason for that was the inclusion of the Egyptian based stand users in part 3 - Now, I love Darby as a villain, but some of the other ones just made the story a bit too sluggish at points.

Agreed. You could cut Alessi easily and replace that time with the occasional DIO interference and they’d be about on par with each other.

@@xord6286 There are tons of hints to Diavolo and Doppio being clear examples of exaggerated DID (First time seeing JoJo exaggerating something?) - the whole soul thing is more of the world-building part of the show's world where souls and fate are actual existing entities.
Part 5 is very interesting in how it's written, and while Diavolo isn't my favorite antagonist in the series, he serves his role very well as an intimidating and oppressive force against the heroes.
Diavolo is my favorite villain in JoJo and it's so pathetic that contemporary fanfic writers seem to portray him based on the memes alone, writing him as a raving buffoon who screams "Do not come close to me" all the time, and can be ambushed and killed by any Stand user if they get the drop on him, including Koichi and f*cking Fugo.
I mean Fugo's stand is pretty powerful, wouldn't be surprised if he could get the drop on Diavolo and kill him, Koichi's a stretch tho.

Diavolo is in my eyes the most evil villain of jojo. Dio might be evil but there were people he did care about or at least respected (his mom, jonathan and pucci), kars cared for his team and respected nature and pucci and funny valentine were well intentioned extremists. Diavolo has no redeeming qualities and that makes him more evil. Kira has no redeeming qualities too but is Complety overshadowed by diavolo.
I would argue that Kira has one redeeming quality. He wants to live a quiet life with the exception of the hand obsession, which he doesn’t go into too often. While I’m not defending his actions, since he did need to be stopped, had Josuke and friends not started to actively pursue him, he probably would have just spent the rest of his life just occasionally killing one person and then just leaving it at that.
For me its the fact that he sees himself as completely righteous. Dio knew he was evil and reveled in it. Pucci and Valentine had a greater goal and that justified their evil means, but were still aware of the wrongness of their actions.
Meanwhile Diavolo truly sees himself as touched by fate. He thinks everything he does is fates will and that all he is doing is just. He is the one that stands above everyone else and can mistreat them however he wants.

“oh but he only kills women occasionally and then goes back to his quiet life” is not a redeeming quality at all. if you have a hand fetish, then just get a girlfriend with nice hands. there's no need to kill innocent women for that, but he chooses to do so
now I know someone would point out that he barely killed any women while he was Shinobu's husband. but the only reason he did that is because he couldn't blow his cover. he had murderous urges towards Shinobu that he had to actually tforce himself to keep in check or else risk the Josuke and the others figuring him out
Emperor Crimson is not only such a badass Localized name, it also makes tons of sense considering Diavolo's character. Not only does it remind me of the naming style of Part 3 (Tarot Card + color), but it also works because of the hierarchy of royalty. The Emperor is the highest rank you cab reach in royalty, with king being the second highest, which fits Diavolo to a T.
Diavolo isn't just a Boss. He is THE Boss. The Boss of all the other Bosses in Passione. Like how an Emperor could be considered a King of Kings.

Think of it like this, a king gets to rule their kingdom that makes up like several villages and a few cities. But an Emperor rules over many, many kingdoms and other minor powers
The King of Briton, the Sultan of Arabia, and the many different major and lesser kings and monarchs of Europe and the Mediteranean were historically subordinate powers to the Emperor of Rome before it's collapse, so that should give you an idea of the hierarchy between Kings and emperors

Don't forget that he is defeated by the son of Dio (which is the Italian word for God). I also think that there is a verse somewhere about Jesus crushing the devil under his heel, and Giorno primarily attacks by kicking (although he switches to punching by the end of the part unfortunately) which may be a reference to that verse, though I don't know for sure.
As for Diavolo, don't forget that he was born from a woman in a prison with no father, and tries to kill his only daughter so that he can continue to enslave the world under his rule. So, he is sort of a subversion of God. He even is his own trinity as well, being Diavolo/Doppio/King Crimson (father, son, and holy ghost). And much like the devil, he is constantly searching for a way to escape his fate, since he is aware of the future (sort of like how the devil is trying to change the future described in Revelations so that he wins in the end, since his failure leads to him dying in the lake of fire for all eternity, which is sort of parallelled with Diavolo's infinite deaths).
The hiding of his identity is of course a reference to "the greatest lie the devil ever told is that he doesn't exist". But it really is the case. We don't know actually know the name of the devil. Devil is just a singular form of Devils, which is synonymous with demons (it really just depends on translation which term is used as far as I can tell). As for Satan, that is also just the singular of Satans, which is the Jewish term for adversary, and so is actually less specific than Demon/Devils since it could refer to human adversaries. Lucifer is just the name of the Morning star in astrology and is another name for Mercury and as a direct reference to astrology it isn't meant to be the literal name for the devil, merely using the astrology of the morning star as an analogy to the Devil's fall from heaven (there is also another analogy in the form of The King of Tyre to corroborate the references to the actual event, so we know at least the event happened even though its not directly written about). Then the Bible mentions Gabriel and Michael as the arch angels but doesn't give the names of any other (or at least I can't remember it ever doing that). However, there are 4 books of the Bible that are controversial and considered non-canon by most people (called the Apocrypha, and it does actually directly write about the devil's fall from heaven rather than refer to it in analogies), but in some of these books it mentions specifically how many archangels there are (7) and even names ALL 7 of them! HOWEVER, it doesn't mention which one specifically is the devil, meaning we still don't know his name (assuming he wasn't an 8th unnamed one). But its interesting that the books that give us the closest chance of knowing the Devil's name happen to be the books that are called non-canon and barely anyone knows about them anymore, or just dismiss them. Even if they truly aren't canon all along (and there is good reason to think they are to be fair), its still an amusing coincidence. So yeah, he has pretty much successfully hidden his name from history, which is interesting. So Diavolo is very much an accurate portrayal of the devil by being so elusive.

You see, the devil has a weird conundrum to deal with : on one hand he wants to rule everything, on the other hand he is literally the most evil being in existence so, unless they are particularly insane or corrupt, no one will follow him willingly.
So what does he do ? He hides, he lies, and he has covers and scapegoats ready.
This is very much what Diavolo does, Passione allows him to rule and have power and influence while he can hide his identity and even his very existence. Doppio is his cover while he hides from the world, and another layer of protection that he will discard if it fits him.
Imagine how crazy it'd be if the gangster Giorno saved in his backstory was the man who became Diavolo.

I think it's more supportive of Giorno's beliefs to have the mafioso he saved just be a normal guy. In the same way that I prefer Josuke's savior to not be "future Josuke" like people theorized, making such a formative moment in a character's life be due a random passerby helps make the character feel more human or relatable since it's a moment anyone could have been in the middle of.

After watching part 5, I must admit that Diavolo is an interesting case to study as a character. The mystery that surrounds him fascinates me.
Another parallel between Giorno and Diavolo is the dichotomy of control.
Giorno can't fully control the creatures he makes, as they have their own will and must adapt accordingly. He also relinquishes control frequently to his teammates during battles, even when he is uncertain of how things will pan out - he puts his faith in his team. His trust and willingness to yield the situation to those he trusts builds a collective strength that he could not have on his own.
Diavolo lusts for control, so he will use whatever force he deems necessary to ensure he's in control, even to his own detriment. King Crimson is a stand that completely controls the situation, leaving his foes helpless. When his control falters, he pouts like a child.
another parallel between them are their childhood. giorno had a horrible mother and an abusive father, while diavolo was adopted by a humble and kind family that lives around the coast. giorno was already exposed to the life of crime ever since he was a kid and he already start doing criminal acts as a kid. diavolo only started doing crimes after he took control of their body, killed his adoptive parents, then burn the whole village. diavolo or should i say doppio could've been a kind soul if it wasn't for diavolo, while giorno could've been evil and cruel if it wasn't for his kindness of saving a random mafia. they have opposite upbringings, yet their fates vary.
Part 5 has really grown on me after reading and watching it multiple times now. Part 8 is my favorite but Bruno is one of the best jojo characters out of every part for sure. Diavolo was an interesting concept with the two personalities and I loved his fight with risotto

I think the design of King Crimson helps display Diavolo's paranoia. Constantly fish-eyed, grinding his teeth, perpetually in a state of distress, anger, horror, and a whole lot of other emotions that all fall under the umbrella of "Tweakin'".
I had this eureka moment when replying to a comment;
Diavolo wants to remain a shadow in the world because he is *Doppio's* shadow, as Karl Jung defines it. He is the part of Doppio who split off due to the trauma of meeting his mother for the first time, the part that if Doppio were whole, he would want to hide from both the world and himself.
The Shadow is the part of our personality that we typically reject. A shadow personified would certainly hide himself, because hes the part Doppio would seek to hide.
Once the two were truly separated from one another by Chariot Requiem, Diavolo had a radical shift in personality. He is far more aggressive, and far more arrogant. He was no longer bound to Doppio's subconcious desires.
A shadow unleashed.

Vento Aureo is a very symbologically loaded part and you can't do its thematics justice with only a few words: Many different characters spiral into their own arcs that are tied to the overarching themes, but what makes it all the more special is how these characters' arcs interact with one other.
To grossly oversimplify, though, it could be said that Vento Aureo is about self-acceptance, unwavering determination in the face of even inevitable destiny, and the extent of the power of the indomitable human spirit. It's a tale of Human V Destiny: How the human nature and our capacity to dream, love, and hold within ourselves an extraordinarily intense willpower can overcome even the inevitable forces of Destiny that work against us.
But for all that that's worth, though, you can't do that unless you're determined to. And you can't be determined to do any of that if you don't believe in yourself, if you don't love yourself: Someone who doesn't accept themselves and doesn't believe in themselves will falter and fail in the face of a challange such as breaking the order of Fate.
Across Vento Aureo much of the journeys of the gang focus on their own self-acceptance, and the power it unlocks within them: Narancia's betrayal of the Boss was only possible because of the love for himself that Bucciarati cultivated within him, Trish only unlocked her true potential after facing her fears and conquering her weaker self in the Notorious B.I.G. fight, etc.
But, on the other side of the picture, we have Diavolo.
Diavolo's actions aren't a result of him wanting to overcome himself. And never does he intend to overcome Destiny. No, Diavolo enforces Destiny, because Diavolo is Destiny. Destiny is always on Diavolo's side: That's a core concept of his character. He is the force of destiny, and we know that because even at the very end, even as Giorno unlocked Gold Experience Requiem and the power of the Removal of Effect, Epitaph still foretold Giorno's death. Epitaph's predictions are always right: It's the force of destiny. And what we see through Epitaph is Diavolo's victory. Destiny still on the side of Diavolo to the very last moment. It was only through the combined dreams and willpowers of the whole gang, manifested in the Arrow that was delivered to Giorno and in Gold Experience Requiem's power to overcome even the inevitable forces of destiny, that Diavolo could finally be defeated.
But it doesn't end there: Before this battle, what was Diavolo even trying to do? With his concealment, with his erasure of every trace if his identity? With his desire to kill Trish?
The whole time, Diavolo was fleeing from his past. He was fleeing from his identity. Diavolo's entire character revolves around this obsession with erasing and destroying his past so that it may never come to haunt him: That's why he kept trying to hide, and destroy his identity, and even kill Trish, the only link to his past that was still around after his crusade against himself
Now, flashback to earlier in this comment: The gang spent their whole journey conquering themselves, facing their pasts, accepting themselves, because that's the foundation for the power of Human Resolve: Self-acceptance. Self-love. Diavolo, though, rejected himself: He spent his whole life trying to get rid of his past, ensuring none of it could ever come back to haunt him ever again: He ignored the truth of the world, avoided it altogether in his attempt to be perfect in his eyes. And that led to his defeat.
Remember what Giorno said immediatelly after unlocking GER? "The only thing that will survive is the truth of this world. Righteous actions born of truth shall never be destroyed". This is what he was talking about: That which is done whole-heartedly, abiding by the truth of who and what you are, will never be destroyed, even if you die: Bucciarati, Narancia, Abbachio, they may have all died, but what they did, they did from the bottom of their hearts, respecting and never straying from their flawed human nature. And it was their acceptance of their flaws, their respect for their past failures, that made their actions result in the victory of Giorno. But Diavolo? Diavolo spent his entire life running from himself, rejecting himself: He spent his whole life rejecting his past failures and his flawed human nature, and thus his actions were not born of truth. That is why he failed: Because even if Destiny is by your side, even if you embody the forces of Fate, even if the world itself chooses you to stand tall above all others, nothing can win against the force of the indomitable human spirit.
It goes even farther: For example, Diavolo, to enforce his control over the gang, to enforce his reign of terror, he enforced precisely that: Terror.
Diavolo spent his time as head of Passione enforcing stagnation and repetition. When Diavolo was boss, he kept the exact same status quo in place for as long as he could: A secret identity, a very specific way of operating, and a reign of terror over Passione. You can even find this reflected in Bucciarati's character: When Bucciarati died, he told Giorno that "his soul had been fated to slowly die, but it was reborn" when he met Giorno.
His soul had been fated to die (literally: Rolling Stones foretold Bucciarati's death in Venice until Mista broke fate with his resolve, but that's another even longer story) because he was too terrified of the prospect of rebellion against the Boss to actually do anything about the drug trade he despised. He, along with everyone in the gang, hated the way Passione was running things, but none dared to do anything about it. They were doomed to repeat that cycle of endless dismay and inaction forever. Diavolo's law of repetition seeping into their very souls.
That is, until Giorno came along. Giorno may not be a leader: That role was Bucciarati's. But what Giorno was is the spark that lit their flaming hearts.
Giorno's character is centered around innovation, rebellion, and revolt against the status quo: He also hated the drug trade (to children at least), but whereas the gang was too terrified to do anything, Giorno planned to face it head on, no matter what. Why Giorno was capable of this is down to his inheritance and the fact that he was a child of both Dio and Johnathan, but the fact of the matter is, he was, and he did.
And Giorno's unwavering resolve was what brought the gang on their journey: It was Giorno who lit the spark of hope of willpower within Bucciarati. It was Giorno who inspired Bucciarati's decaying soul to take a stand against Diavolo. It was Giorno who tied the resolves of the entire gang together: It was Giorno who awoke the Sleeping Slaves of the gang, and brought them to break Fate.
Giorno and Diavolo share a duality in that Giorno is the embodiment of change and rebellion, whereas Diavolo is the embodiment of stagnation and repetition. Diavolo's insidious hand was withering the souls of the gang away, and only Giorno's nature as an indomitable force of rebellion could change that.

I think a point in support of the idea of Diavolo being a foil to Giorno as well as an example of what makes Giorno stand out from other Jojos protags is one Eyepatch Wolf mentioned, as Giorno rarely fights another stand user solo compared to past Jojos. Aside from Bucciarati and Babyface, he always has another stand user on his side helping him, which is an important detail to consider when analyzing themes of solitude vs comeraderie

I'm just gonna copy and paste a comment I wrote on this video that's probably gonna get buried, but basically TL:DR his insanity is actually unnerving
What I really like about Diavolo is his insanity, or more particularly how it's written.
The previous main villains always had their sides of madness (especially Kira), but Diavolo is just unnerving. Like, seriously uncomfortable. I think one of the factors is that, unlike all the previous main villains, he is not a calm person *at all*.
There's a video called "Diavolo's angry adventure" and it's not called that just for the joke : the dude seems like he is always screaming, making him feel incredibly unhinged and dangerous. Even his stand is unnvering with both its faces always baring theire teeth in a rictus of mad rage.
I could go on, but this dude actually feel like a crazy person with too much power, like you found some weird junkie in a back alley, talking and growling to himself and ready to stab you with a rusted nail at any moment.
Makes you wonder how different the story would be if Diavolo were more trusting.
Would Passione continue to grow in power? Would Trish continue her father’s legacy in crime? Would Polnareff still be a turtle?

Golden Wind is my favorite Part of JoJo and I love Diavolo as villain. Sure he isn’t as fleshed out as say Dio, Kira, or Pucci but I think that kinda adds to Diavolo’s character in the sense we know about Diavolo about as much as the main group does adds to discovering his identify.

I think Diavolo is a evolution on DIO in part 3, not in the sense of thematics or character, but in presentation.
Araki learnt from how he use DIO in part 3, and in part 5 Diavolo does what DIO did in part 3 but better, and being more actively involved in the plot and journey.
Agreed. Personally I feel like DIO being in Part 1 made his presence in terms of being a mystery less effective in the story - yes the characters don't know about him much and both them and the audience don't know what his stand is, but based on Part 1 the audience still knows his history, which takes out a lot of the mystery.
Diavolo on the other hand keeps that mystery all throughout, with many theories able to be made on who he truly is and represents. I don't hate Part 3 DIO, but I find Diavolo a much more compelling antagonist imo

Diego was way more brutal and dickish than I expected after everything I heard about him from others. Very awesome character.
Ironically I feel like Valentine ran into part 3 Dio’s problems. Although we know about him very early on, and there’s a few scenes with him that cause tension (anything with him and Lucy in the same room), he really doesn’t do anything active until the final arcs and just kinda swoops in when most of the work has been done by other people. His speech at the end is great but I don’t feel like it really recharacterized his earlier actions, and unlike Dio he doesn’t really have a strong sense of rivalry with anyone

My big issue with Diavolo is that mystique is his big thing, his identity is the big mystery of the part, the story makes finding out who he actually is a big fucking deal. And that goes absolutely nowhere. Diavolo's identity has no real relevance to the plot. He isn't someone important and, contrary to what assassin group and Bucciarati's group thought, it has absolutely zero relevance to how to defeat him. He isn't defeated because he has some big secret that could lead to his downfall, he loses because of a mcguffin that wasn't foreshadowed at all, brought by a character that wasn't alluded to before, who contacts the main characters via means he was never demonstrated to have.
Take the mystery away and all we are left with is this very barebones character that a lot of people only really care about because he is physically grafted onto his much more likable subordinate.

Recently I (a former anime-only) went back to read all the manga of Jojo’s and it’s crazy how much more likable the anime made Giorno. Something about him just felt really boring in the manga, and he got shilled by the other characters more often. It’s to the point that, where I see anime Bucciarati as a deuteragonist, I did not see manga Bucciarati as one.

I remember when I finished reading, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I thought about Diavolo. Not just for obvious reasons but for textual reasons from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, i.e. Diavolo wanting to rule then underworld while remaining anonymous is similar to Mr. Hyde and taking all the heat in for Dr. Jekyll.
Another thing I find it cool about Diavolo is that he's a manifestation of the current status quo.
I've read somewhere that there's a bunch of ways on how to make a villain effective. One of these ways is to show how the world has changed for the worst thanks to his presence. That way, even if he's not on screen, you can feel the consequences of what he's done.
We start part 5 in Italy, and passione has been ruling the country for quite some time. We see the drugs, the children getting addicted, the mafia wars and the crime rate being 8-10x more than anywhere else in the world iirc. It's not a pretty picture, and that's why we have some scenes of people being bribed, the old ladies asking Bruno to help their addicted son, etc. This is all because of Diavolo. Granted, we could've seen a bit more of this as the story progressed, but I can understand that time constraints and the limited space of a manga chapter often get in the way of that, as Araki himself spoke about during interviews.
All in all, I think that Diavolo is one of the best villains in JoJo.

I have DID, and what I love is that Diavolo isn’t a villain because of his condition. Often times the media makes DID out to be this massive scary disorder in which the people afflicted with it are out to kill. It is a massive and scary disorder, but really only for the people with it. We’re statistically more likely to be taken advantage of and hurt because of a lack of cohesion in our brains. Araki however just uses DID as an aspect of Diavolo’s character, showing that he was just always this messed up guy, and wasn’t evil because of his disorder. It’s not perfect representation for DID, but it’s a hundred times better than what’s typically shown, and for that I love it.

Will also say as well why I think Diavolo is underrated by a lot of people when it come to villan writing (you've mentioned it in your Kira video) are the usual sympathetic back stories/relatable mo, I still see a lot of people online staying that's the only way to write antagonists, hell it probably didn't help that it was maybe some what more vague than usual, or at least you need to pay more attention to it when watching/reading lol

I really liked how his stand despite how half of the abilities it starts out with never get used again, reflect his nature very well. He has the heart of Jonathan and the cunning nature of Dio. His damage reflection perfectly symbolizes how he starts off gentle, but can quickly turn ruthless when not shown respect. Going in detail on things like that will be really fun. Looking forward to more videos from you.

Y'know, it just occurred to me that I may have taken some kind of inspiration from Diavollo in characterizing Baphomet, the demon king of the 4th circle of hell, in my setting; because, much like how criminal organizations work, the title of demon king is claimed through offing the current ruler of a particular circle.
And, much like Diavollo, Baphomet responds to this by ruling his circle from the shadows (though, a little more literally because he quite literally cursed the entire circle with darkness only penetrable by supernatural light) - specifically constructing a figurehead democracy to mask the kraterocratic monarcho-dictatorship at its heart, while also erasing record of his existence.

Diavolo/Doppio is, in my opinion, a pretty weird case of trauma-induced Dissociative Identity Disorder.
Polnareff identifies that this likely stemmed from childhood trauma, but let's look into how that manifests. The 'Diavolo' personae is at once obsessed with power and anonymity, which suggests that he cannot bear anyone know who he is/was but still wants power and control over his surroundings in order to feel safe. He'll go through any lengths to achieve this impossible goal.
Compare to Doppio, who's a cheerful, friendly (unless pressed) young man who's completely oblivious to the fact that he and 'Boss' are one and the same.
Since DID sufferers tend to be unaware of the 'splinters', it seems to me that the person they were before the abuse was more similar to Doppio than Diavolo, and Diavolo was basically a protector of Doppio while he was being abused, as he's strong, powerful, merciless, and brutal, everything the boy wasn't when the abuse happened.
Diavolo was supposed to be coping mechanism/protector for a frightened child, but metastasized into a monster.
Diavolo is better understood as the concept of “destroying your past to create a new future” personified. Everyone in the Gang is a delinquent that’s down on their luck, they destroyed their previous lives and are gangsters who are trying to find a new life. Giorno is different, yes he’s the son of dio (a man who also threw away his adopted family) Giorno has a relationship with his past as a weak child. At the top of this hierarchy of gangsters who constantly escape the past is Diavolo, a man who uses his child self and has perfected-

19:08 While it is technically true that him being the son of Dio doesn't really play a role in the plot, as we never see him interact with sny of the followers of Dio and if we're being honest the connection was only made because that is one of the only ways this story could have happened, the idea of Giorno being Dio's son does still play a role in the story when it comes to Giorno's character, even if it's not very obvious. Giorno was created to be a mix between the character of Jonathan and Dio, someone who has the passion and drive to obtain something greater from his life (among other things) that Dio showed in the first part, mixed with the good heart of Jonathan. I remember someone describing Giorno's story as "what if Dio the protagonist instead of the antagonist," noting that the first part of JoJo was essential more a story of Dio and his impacts on the family he entered than Jonathan, even noting that in the origional manga we are introduced to Dio before Jonathan. So, although Giorno being Dio's son does not play into the part in any literal way, it very much does spiritually.

Diavolo reminds me of Silent Hill Downpour's weird entity often referred to as 'the void'; an ill defined red vortex that chases you in certain scenarios, in theory this is an interesting idea as not knowing WHAT is trying to kill you can make it more frightening by using the unknown but once you see its a weird red void you start wondering what its deal is and it can become less threatening and I feel like that kinda happened with Diavolo but to a much lesser extent since people actually like part 5 most of the time. Araki kept him in literal shadows for so long trying to leave a lot of him a mystery but theres a line between mysterious and just unwritten that he teeters on a bit too often, he either needed to be more mysterious or have more information I think.

Honestly, Diavolo is my favorite Jojo villain because, when you think about, he is basically a dark twist on the concept of a chosen one.
Think about it:
Doppio came from humble beginnings , his father long dead and his mother in prison, he was adopted by his town's priest and lived a relatively secluded, simple life. He was unskilled and unsure of himself by nature , but was destined to one day wield great power, with the caviat that he would have to struggle with his darker half all his life.
Well, at some point or other, the darker half won, took complete control of their shared life, burnt their home town to the ground, built his empire and became the Diavolo we now know.
We know for a fact that his infinite death was a punishment from Fate itself. But what if it wasn't JUST for breaking it , but also for taking away everything Doppio *could* have been and using that power for his own selfish ends and building his criminal enterprise on the corpses of countless innocents.
The whole theme behind Part 5 is basically revolving around taking down an Evil Tyrannical king. Diavolo sees himself as the one who stands above all things, and thus will not let anyone even dare to try and take his crown.
Ok, for giorno bit of being the son of dio, it was presented as a contrast for the personality of his father, of which has a beat by beat elements in their tragic pasts, but giorno being set apart to the path dio made was the golden righteous heart he inherited from Johnathan, setting him to a different path. Like a what if dio just go to a righteous path, along with his vigor, intellect and charisma.

Even if there's not that much said directly in the part about Diavolo, there's a lot of hints that actually create quite a complete picture. Diavolo is an "artificial", secondary personality of Doppio - a lonely orphan who grew up in fear of the world.
When you look deeper into these two characters' behavior, you can notice something interesting: Diavolo's personality is very clear, straightforward, stable, and extreme - he has very clear over the top values and goals. But Doppio? Doppio is a f--king mess - he's extremely unstable, looking sweet on the surface but very volatile inside, reacting with overwhelming aggression to being touched or even slightly pressured, having strange headaches and short-term memory losses all the time, obsessively repeating "ritualistic" moves and sounds (his "phone call" moments)... He's a "walking contradiction" as called by Risotto. Or, to put it simply, a very mentally unstable, traumatized person.
And that's why I believe that Diavolo is a secondary personality subconsciously created by Doppio as a coping mechanism. Doppio felt powerless and small in the world so Diavolo became obsessed with power. Doppio lacked strong and guiding parental figure in his life so Diavolo became unusually caring, encouraging, and even gentle towards him despite being cruel to everyone else. Doppio was traumatized by his origins and afraid of his future, so Diavolo gained the ability to erase the time and ultimately run away from fate every time he gets in danger.
And this also explains why Diavolo is so extreme - because in a way, his entire personality is just Doppio's painful coping mechanism.
I think the one thing i love the most of diavolo is the method in the madness approach to him and to an extent doppio

I always did like Diavolo, mainly because he is such an interesting character to talk about when you put him in the same conversation as both Giorno and DIO. The three are literally a Bizarre Trinity being a dark reflection of the Holy Trinity. DIO being the apex and having everything Diavolo wanted with the former influencing the series in some way even after his death with his presence felt all over while the latter is forgotten after his defeat and forever banished into a never ending hell, and Giorno being the successor to that power that Diavolo craved for that only the true son of DIO could achieve. Honestly, make a video called “The Bizarre Trinity of Biblical Proportions” starring these three, what they represent and their roles in the narrative as a whole and you will have a banger of a video! I’ll definitely watch it! 🤩

My personal least favorite villain but that's only because Jojo sets the bar so goddamn high. I still consider Diavolo more interesting than like 90% of shonen antagonist. He's just really hurt by how little screentime he has (Doppio doesn't count) and the fact he's facing Giorno, the dangerously-close-to-a-mary-sue jojo.

I'd argue Diavollo/Doppio's condition is actually a lot closer to OSDD (other-specified dissociative disorder), which is essentially a wastebasket term for any condition with DID-like characteristics but lacks a 1:1 comparison.

I’ve always held an appreciation for under appreciated characters such as Diavolo, Kars, and Jonathan. To me it feels like these characters are more or less victims are unfavorable circumstances.
Giorno being the son of Dio doesn't _necessarily_ tie into the plot itself, but it _does_ tie into its metanarrative; "Dio" being the Italian word for god, and "Diavollo" being the Italian word for devil, means Araki very intentionally made part 5 an allegory for the son of god overcoming the devil.

bu there´s also a fact that akari was depressed during the time that he was writing golden wing, so maybe he got a idea what the villian was supossed to be, bu this affected the creative process.
