I have 2 boys, 1 girl, and I taught them from the time they were old enough to understand and follow instruction. By the time they were pre-teen, they had the basics down, then I started teaching them how to clean the kitchen, bathroom, toilets, etc... my eldest son, who is 21 now, knows how to keep an entire house by himself, and he's turned his knowledge into a career! He's now making a living from the cleaning skills I taught him! If you can't tell already, I'm very very proud of my kids. He and I have asperger's syndrome, my daughter has high functioning autism and ADHD, AND my little guy has global developmental delays. Even my youngest strips and makes his own bed now! He loads and unloads the dishwasher, he puts his own washing away, the next step for him is teaching him to fold his own washing. My daughter, on alternative weeks, cleans the kitchen, the bathroom, and living areas, and she takes care of her own bed and room. Every now and then she'll do some laundry, and I've taught her how to iron her school uniform, which she does most of the time.
You have to set your kids up to be successful adults, it's part of raising them, it's not the wife's job. I had to teach my husband, and let me tell you, it didn't make me feel like being romantic with him, you know what I mean? So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE teach your boys now! For the sake of all wives everywhere, please teach your sons how to keep house!
Besides, we need the help as we get older and tired, right? We shouldn't be doing everything by ourselves at our age!
You're a beautiful, loving mother, and your boys are gorgeous young men, you're doing an amazing job ❤

We don’t have a linen closet, so our spare sheets, towels, and cleaning supplies are stored in the bedrooms and bathrooms where they’re used. I sometimes wonder if storing all of that stuff together in a linen closet might be asking for trouble in a way. 😂

It looks wonderful! How about printing out an enlarged photo of the way it looks now and attach it to the inside of the door as a visual reminder for the family to put away according to the photo. LOL, it could help. I absolutely love your videos and your sense of humor. I grew up in Central Jersey but now in Idaho. You remind me of many happy memories. Thank you.

I fold towels in thirds vertically, then half and half because when I hang the towels on the towel bar, I like them in thirds. Having them prefolded makes it easy to grab the clean towels from the linen closet and hang them on the bar.

Sophia, that’s your craft space in hiding!! Put sheets on closet shelf in bedroom they are for. Towels to bathroom and I suggest color code towels per person. That way the person who does laundry knows who gets the towels. We have four kids in college and they keep their towels folded in their own closet or under your bathroom sink.

  • @juliebrooke6099

The pale patches on the towels could be due to blemish ointment if either of the boys are using something like that. Your towel shelf will only stay neat if everyone is instructed to only take one from the top of the pile. If someone reaches for their favourite which happens to be further down the system will fail. I fold mine in half lengthwise and then roll them up. I put them on the shelf with the roll ends facing forward. People can pull their favourite out of the log pile even if it’s at the bottom and the pile sort of self adjusts.

The boys are young men now, they will not help if they aren’t required too , I have two sons and four grandsons, all adults. At our home, they are always expected to respect and take care of our items.its considered disrespectful if they don’t, and they still love me lol
As for towels do half, half and then half again. Try giving each boy their own towels and wash clothes to keep in their rooms, (keep them out if the linen closet👍🏻) I love when you and Scott interact lol

My folding plan always changes based on where they need to fit. In our current home we don’t have a linen closet, each bathroom has their own towels. They go back into their designated room after being washed. The kids wash their towels when they do their laundry and go right back to their bathroom cupboard. Likewise mine and hubby- we wash ours when we do our clothes. We have 2 kids and they have 2 bath towels each (different colors). And a totally different color hand towels/washcloths. The kitchen towels and rags end up in my load of laundry since I’m the only one who cares about them. 🤣👍
Sheets /extra blankets get stored in their designated bedroom closets.👍

Sophia! You have made a huge impact on my current life. I did the DOC series last time with you. My husband and I have just decided (spur-of-the-moment) to sell our house and move. Because of that decluttering, I don't have to do that before I box everything up. I am completely amazed that what I'm packing is what I actually need to take with me! This has never happened. LOL There are the few throwaways such as worn clothing and mostly empty cleaning supplies but I got rid of SO MUCH EXCESS last time that it's been a breeze. Including the linen closet. I have you to thank!

Lol! I have no hall/coat closets in my house. I have a modular home and all the closets are in bedrooms. However, i have a method.....every bathroom has it's own color towel. The hall bathroom is beach towels. Dog and messy stuff towels in the laundry room. Sheets for each bed live in the room the bed is. In my closet i have a plastic drawer unit with sheets for my bed. No digging for mattress sizes when they all fit! Toilet paper lives in the bathroom too.

Hi Sophia, have you tried folding a he towels in half lengthwise then rolling them into a cylinder? I find it helpful as you can see all the towels you have without having to lift the top ones off. Also they are easier to pull out when you need them, especially if you put the bigger ones on the bottom and work your way to smaller at the top in a pyramid/Christmas tree shape keeping all the same sets/colours together. It works for me and the boys/men in the family can see exactly which one they want without disturbing the others too much. Love all your blogs. Happy Thanksgiving.

I have command hooks on the bathroom door for my husband i use the towel rack and i have a hook on my sons bedroom door for his. Then theres no folding and they remember to hang them up. I went trough all my linen and towel. Kept a change of bedding for each room put them into a bottom draw in that room. Kept a set for any guest we may have. Did the same with the towels gave each family member a hand towel and a bath towel they chose what colour they wanted the rest went to the local dog shelter. It has so far worked in my house bed changing is a breeze and if they don't put their towels in the wash that is their problem. My husband when we first met was unable to do anything as his mother did everything for him I soon stopped that, told him I'm his equal not his servant. I have made sure my children are able to do things around the home and take pride in what they do. I have sons and daughters when the time come for them to have homes of their own I want them to be equal partners in all that they do.

Great job on the linen closet Sophia. I got frustrated with my two linen closets (one in each bathroom that I just couldn't keep organized). Then one day I was watching a you tube video on how to organize their closets and watched as they decided to put sheets together the way you did and then just took her towels and folded them in half and rolled them up and stored them that way stating it saves time and room in the linen closet. I been doing that for about six months and it is working - not sure if it is because I color coordinated people towels from dog towels but nobody is complaining they can't roll up the towel and place it on the shelf when it comes clean from the laundry. I also had to label a bin for cleaning rags since they would use them instead of a towel in the kitchen. Hope you had a Great Thanksgiving with the family and you were able to get some quilting time in.

You asked how I keep my linen closets neat? I am a homemaker and it is part of my job. If I had a job outside of the home, especially one with many hours, I would keep the absolute minimum of what I needed. One set of sheets for each bed, removed, washed, and returned to the bed. One set of whatever is needed for a guest bed. The same with the towels and washcloths. Whatever is hanging in the bathrooms gets washed and rehung. A set in the closet for guests and one or two extras. The items will wear out more frequently, but then you will buy new and not keep those you are replacing. It will come out the same price in the end.

That way they stay our of the linen closet except for getting toilet tissure. Even toilet rolls and other items can be stored in the bathrooms. This is just a suggestion and may not work for you. good luck.

At her house he takes out the trash and recycling, collects the bins, they grocery shop together, do laundry, cook for themselves and her 3 younger siblings (real cooking not from a box), he shovels the driveway there and is so "helpful" that the parents have asked him to stay there and help with the little kids when they've been away for business. I feel slightly ripped off that they get such a helpful version 😬 but I know he picked up the abilities by observing and stuff when we thought he wasn't paying attention. His girlfriend's parents are both properly trained Italian chefs and he makes himself some amazing smelling breakfasts when he's home! I'm more than certain your boys will do just fine and have wives who are happy to have educated men instead of one's who won't look away from a game system. I see no reason to nag at my son to do things when dishes will always be there but his opportunity to have the time for sports and education will soon be limited by being a full on adult. Being grown is highly over rated.

I agree. They will learn when time comes and for now, academic and school related activities are more important.

My "Mantra" is..."If I want it done right, I do it myself"....!
Don't stress over the little things. At least the towels get to the linen closet. It's a guy thing not to fold, just stuff it in the closet.

Hi Sophia… when my boys were younger & used blemish cream , my towels had those lightened areas too. Could have been something in medication 🤷‍♀️

My daughter has been washing her face with a medicated face wash for 6 years and my towels didn’t start having the bleaching spots until she started using the face wash. I started only buying white towels then.

I stay my linen closet very clean, because I Do Not have one. My Blankets I store in the bathroom and my Extra shets in my wardrobe in my bedroom. And extra cleaning supplies in the Kitchen. So every Thing is were i need it. Very Practical. In germany we Do Not have Linen closets.

I’ve had those light spots on towels from acne products - had to switch to using white on faces … ps I have the same towel folding issue
