3 Ways to Reduce Your Hunger Hormone (Ghrelin) & Prevent Weight Regain

  • In this episode, you’ll learn 3 tips to lose weight in a way that helps reduce ghrelin levels so you’re less hungry, less likely to regain the weight you worked so hard to lose, and can increase your fasting window.
    Highlights From This Episode:
    - Ghrelin is also known as your hunger hormone. It increases after a typical chronic calorie restricted diet and makes you want to regain the weight.
    - Ghrelin is pulsatile in nature and seems to be released in conjunction with your normal meal times.
    - Intermittent fasting helps lower ghrelin levels. Knowing that your hunger will increase around normal meal times, you can be proactive and ensure that you’re properly hydrated and distracted around those times to ride the hunger wave until it passes. Remember that intermittent fasting isn’t about eating less, it’s about eating less often. Food absolutely still matters.
    - Eating a diet high in healthy fat significantly helps lower ghrelin. Including plenty of protein in your diet will also help stipulate other satiety hormones including CCK and peptide YY.
    - For obese individuals with insulin resistance, your ghrelin suppression is going be blunted after eating refined starches and sugars, meaning you can anticipate hunger again quickly after eating those kinds of foods. Set yourself up for success by avoiding or reducing these processed carbs.
    - Sleep is crucial for weight loss and maintenance success. Getting enough sleep can help reduce your ghrelin levels and make intermittent fasting a lot easier. You can’t out diet and exercise the negative hormonal effects of chronic stress or sleep deprivation.
Note: Reshape Physical Therapy and Wellness evolved into Weight Loss for Health, and finally Zivli. How to Lose Weight After 50 was our first course that eventually grew into Zivli. Some old blog posts or resources mentioned in this episode may have been removed.

What is "low calorie high density food" exactly? Are you eating cellulose? No wonder you are hungry all the time. You need to eat fat, and lots of it. Forget about calories and density. And BTW, 11% for average male is not sustainable. Stop believing influencers. If you want to keep your weight off periodic fasting it your friend. Not "intermittent" 16-8, start with 3 day fast a month, slowly increase to 10. After about a year you can go back to 3 days a month and you will never be fat again.

I lost weight on Keto but got fed up and then went back onto the pasta etc, gaining all the weight back. I found fasting easy on Keto but I'm squeamish eating meat so low carb was a challenge then. I heard about protein being the most important macronutrient and have been trying calorie counting but the low fat approach always ends in me being starving, regardless of protein. Then I have cravings and a rumbling stomach before bed, resulting in self sabotage! Time to accept the simple carbs have to go! And it's back to the avocados!

Which is why The Gastric Sleeve surgery works so well. Rarely do people regain afterward, UNLESS they pay zero attention to their carb intake. During The Sleeve operation, part of what is done is removal of the Fundus (the stretchy top part of the stomach). The Fundus contained most of the body’s Ghrelin hormone RECEPTORS. Ghrelin molecules can only become activated IF they can sit on a Ghrelin Receptor. With no receptors to occupy and become activated on, Ghrelin hormone molecules simply circulate around the bloodstream like Musical Chairs with no place to sit. That’s why people who never had Gastric Sleeve bariatric surgery hardly ever reach their weight loss Goal, and even if they DO, they gain it all back AND MORE, and constantly yo-yo up and down, trying the next latest diet or cleanse fad. Next, they face Menopause and their Golden Years struggling with their weight, which gets even more difficult due to OTHER factors. Whereas, people who had The Sleeve ALWAYS have NO FUNDUS anymore, and always have the Tool of a stomach 2/3rds its original size, even as they age. So they always have the restriction that limits how much they can eat at any given time. Gastric Sleeve is covered by almost all insurances, Medicaid and Medicare, often up to age 70. Usually one (1) night in the hospital, and resume normal activities in 2 weeks.
    GET THE SLEEVE. NEXT PROBLEM.

One night in the hospital, no complications, no reflux, still have a healthy gallbladder, insurance covered most of it. I ended up needing a tummy tuck bc I lost so much belly fat. THAT was $19K. I was curious about your video bc it discussed Ghrelin, which mine doesn’t have any receptors to sit on and become activated from anymore. But the word caught my eye. I thought your readers should know about The Sleeve and how it takes care of Ghrelin. That is one reason people lose weight with The Sleeve. Not JUST because they have a smaller stomach and the restriction. There are also about 20,000 neurotransmitters it positively affects.

I tried a fruitarian diet last year, by someone who claimed she healed her PCOS with fruit. It totally messed with my hormones (which were already messed up with my own PCOS), and ever since, I've struggled with massive E.D. Symptoms.
Several times a week, I will eat meals and 2 jars of peanut butter and I am still starving no matter what. At this point I'm just scared.

I’ve been really struggling. The only thing that’s helped me is these three simple things. Nothing fancy.
Drink 2 to 3 ltrs water
      Walk 10,000 steps a day
Find your calorie deficit. TDEE calculator helps. So my BMR IS 1,300 my total expenditure height weight activity etc is around 2,000 so anything between 1,500 to 1,700 per day is about right.
Ensure you have good sources of protein I have about 80grms per day plenty of fruit and veg, high protein pasta small portions of complex carbs.
I’m 57 post menopausal abs have struggled with weight gain all my life. I don’t have breakfast that usually triggers me to get hungrier through the day. Try for a week and see how you go. This has truly changed my life. I’ve lost weight for the first time this week without feeling hungry or needing to binge in the evening.

Yeah that is bad for long term I feel like some UA-cam influencers heavily promote fruitarian and a lot of people have followed that diet and gotten messed up from it like you did, I’m sorry you are struggling so much, animal products like pasture raised eggs might help you or other animal products as more satiating but I’m guessing you might be vegan

Brianna, Eat animals. That's it. Have 40 grams of real protein that you can CHEW and hunger will not come back for 4+ hours. Then, eat another 40 grams. Repeat. Hunger comes from a biological NEEEED for amino acids and minerals. Grass fed animals process the minerals for us. So hide an ounce of ground beef liver in your turkey meatloaf. Or take an electrolyte and mineral supplement + Omega 3 supps if you don't eat fish. Pop a glutamine too. You will graze on cookies, carrots, steel cut oatmeal and all that other energy (as carbs or fat), but your body craves a big meal of amino acids. Don't have two eggs and two pieces of bacon for breakfast, have 5 egg whites and 2 pieces of bacon. If you're vegan, you will lose muscle or bone (the nutrient storage locations) so be extra mindful. check protein's DIAAS score. Also, get checked for parasites, which is very common even in first world countries. Fructose stimulates fat storage in most mammals on earth as pre- hibernation nutrition. We do too! It's EVOLUTIONARY. Fructose goes straight to the liver (like vodka) and turns to fat and then triggers hormones that beg for more...so you can be well prepared for a long winter. The liver can only process about 80 GRAMS of fructose a day yet many people live in a constant Summer and they pack in fructose without ever fasting in a week or reducing fructose for 4-5 months but are as sedentary as a fat bear their whole lives. Additionally, most of the fruit in the U.S. is HYBRIDIZED TO BE MUCH HIGHER IN SUGAR than its original version. If you're overweight please know that the body CANNOT release body fat while the liver is preoccupied with utilizing fat. It can't do both at the SAME TIME. You either store or utilize body/dietary fat. Go to BlackKetoGirl on Instagram to find all your PCOS sisters who are CURING themselves by reducing body fat. They're also finally getting pregnant left and right!! #ketobabymaker. And there's a huge support group of parents in a private Facebook group who are trying to reverse NAFLD in their kids.... sad state of affairs when the insides of kids' bodies look like full blown alcoholics because of after school snacks and not enough animal protein. :(

Those researchers sure didn't talk to me! I'm so ravenous at 9 am that I can't focus ar work. And no, it's not "appetite" or "habit" or psychological hunger. It's gut-wrenching in my stomach full-on ghrelin hunger. It comes in waves, and if I can ride it out until noon, it subsides. But it's sometimes so strong that I can't just ignore it or distract myself. It interferes with productivity at work, and I literally have to live moment to moment. It's why I finally gave up IF. I don't think these researchers took a wide enough sample. 9 am is the hungriest time of day. That's how breakfast started in the first place.

5:30 I can't skip breakfast -- I wake up hungry with my stomach growling, and my large muscle groups especially my back start aching if I go that long without food, and I also have super low energy and can't think well/concentrate in the morning without food, so I do a smoothie in the morning. I'm finding I can often skip lunch and make it through till dinner time, but then I'm starving again, so it is hard to eat a proper portion of dinner.

So much can go into that morning hunger. I'll consider making a video on this topic in the future. You could consider a fatty coffee as a bridge - such as 1 Tbs of MCT oil, 2 Tbs of heavy cream, etc. Morning hunger may also be reduced by increasing the protein/fat/fiber at dinner and improving sleep quality so you're getting at least 7-8 hours/night. Also staying hydrated will be very important and you may benefit from electrolytes when fasting.

I'd look at how you're structuring your meals first to be sure there is at least 30 grams of protein, about 10 grams of fiber, and healthy fat. Some people may want more than 3, especially if they have a weight gain goal, have had a stomach reducing surgery, or are very active and need it. Hydration would also be a really important factor, and you may be missing electrolytes in your diet if you're experiencing feelings like you're going to faint.

Okay so let me get this straight Greeley make you eat more but leptin makes you eat less right?
The higher the insulin the more hungry within obesity so it is better for you to have good sleep to eat less selecting can go up and grayland and insulin can go down and to be on a low-carb diet.

    • @drmorgannolte
      @drmorgannolte  10 місяців тому +2

I think your understanding of the content is correct. Ghrelin is your hunger hormone and will make you hungrier. Leptin is produced by fat cells and signals your brain you have enough stored energy and lowers appetite. With insulin resistance, you can become leptin resistant. Your brain doesn't properly sense your body's fuel stores and your appetite doesn't go down, this contributes to overeating and obesity.

    • @lemon__j
      @lemon__j 4 місяці тому

@@drmorgannolteThat's very interesting, especially about Leptin resistance. I read that Potassium allows the body to burn fat for fuel. Since lowering my sodium intake and eating Potassium rich foods, I feel energised even when I am fasting. So it's definitely made a difference.

I keep hearing that intermittent fasting regularly causes your metabolism to slow down and that's why people tend to keep increasing the amount of fasting time. I keep seeing videos with people fasting for 3, 5, or more days. That is an eating disorder. I'm already a carnivore because eating vegetables or fruit causes severe chronic IBS. I'm also a heavy weightlifter. I'm actually in the 99.7% for strength in my age, gender, and weight class. If I don't eat for even 1 day, I guarantee, I'll lose muscle mass, particularly at this age. The less muscle you have, the slower your metabolism. None of this makes sense for an athletic post menopausal woman. I need to look up how long a ghrelin spike lasts and ride it out.

    Extraordinary body type-
From last 30 years I am facing problem of continuous and intense high hunger. I need to take 5 full meals a day. If I become even 5 minutes late, then it badly affects my body. Also, continuous thirst and polyurea.
All reports are almost normal. No diabetes.
The root cause is Not yet diagnosed.

I have Sleep Apnea that the CPAP machine is failing to treat. My stats suck. This has been 3 years since diagnosis and my statistics still suck. Nothing is changing. I am now clinically obese and wake up every morning ravenously hungry. So I'm pre-diabetic and have fatty liver. I can't fast because I get low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia). So fix that. You can't.

I don't care about weight. I can't afford to eat. Overeating is a money problem in Australia. In America you get cheap food. Not in Australia. I can't afford to eat financially. I'm not concerned about weight.

Buy cheap food such as beans which are filling. I am showing a current price of 2.50 for a medium sized bag of white beans at Coles in Queensland. This is about 5-6 meals for an adult. Pair beans with nearly anything. Meat, rice, vegetables.
Beans are the best cheap healthy, filling food and there are so many kinds so never get bored.

That is likely a sign that it's too much stress on your body. Of course there are many more factors that go into good sleep, but sleep is more important than fasting, so I wouldn't sacrifice your sleep to fast.

I'd suggest shortening the fast a bit and adding electrolytes if you haven't already tried that. I usually recommend the unflavored ones by LMNT.
