Yerba is OK.. But please check that it is CERTIFIED ORGANIC, because in Argentina most of the crops all around the country are full with agrotoxics. 😢 And also please drink it alone, NO SUGAR.
Hi there ! Being from Argentina where we are born having mate .. . I can assure this is true . Altough is far from being tea for us . Two deffirent things altogether . Love it. Cant live without it . It really implies deeper meanings for us all . Thanks 🌻
I’ve been drinking Yerba tea for over 15 years and each time I drink it I feel uplifted, calm, clear headed, confidence and have mental clarity. I LOVE this tea. Please be aware that it’s an acquired taste if it’s your first time, so I suggest adding a teaspoon of honey to combat the bitter taste. ☕
I grow Yerba Mate here in zone 9a. I have 2 trees about 5 ft tall and what's amazing is that we had two 15F winter events in three years with no effect on my Yerba Mate trees (one in-ground and one in a pot with no protection). Yerba Mate is an evergreen so you can enjoy Yerba Mate tea all year long. My Yerba Mate trees/bushes are a great beginner plant because they are drought tolerant and I have had no issues with bugs or diseases (I'm in zone 9a bug and diseases heaven)
I found the plant on Amazon for $20 USD. This will be my 1st time trying yerba mate. I'm glad it doesn't have as much caffeine as coffee. But, I will take precautions and start my intake @ 2 cups 3x per week to find my comfort zone.
This is very interesting you are covering GLP-1. This was the first research drug I worked on. It almost seems like a life time ago. The doors were closed after 9/11 because lack of investors. I was so young, & I loved that job so much. I’m glad to see this has finally surfaced. We were in our stage 3 clinical trails way back then. I knew the patents were sold off, but had no clue who had actually bought them. Thank you uplifting to know this is on the market.
Huberman - you are awesome and have helped me tremendously with my mental and physical health, from Alcoholism, to brain chemistry and mental well-being. Suggestion: Do a podcast exploring the use of GLP-1 and Yerba Mate on not only the weight loss benefits, but also a cure for AUD - Alcohol Use Disorder. I love the way you explain things and there is more and more research coming out about GLP-1's benefits on AUD. Keep up the good work!

I recall seeing lovers sharing mate in Argentina. A man walking down the street and smiling to his girlfriend. His arm draped around her shoulder. I watched him then turn to the cup of mate in his other hand and with just as much passion and take a sip of his mate. I knew something was up with this yerba mate then. When I was traveling through Uruguay a restaurant owner saw me trying to make a cup of mate. He closed the shop down. He paid his employee to go buy the best mate. He then sat down with me and showed me how to pour the mate with his friends all helping me out. It was amazing. By the time I left the country I was waiting for a bus. A young woman saw me preparing a cup of mate. She asked me a few questions assuming I didnt know how to prepare it and watched. She heard what I said and saw my technique and began to grudgingly nod in approval and respect. I brought back 40 pounds of yerba mate with me not knowing I could get it in the US. Customs thought I was smuggling cocaine in the packages of mate. They were so perplexed at how much I had. They asked me "why do you have so much mate?!" I said "I love yerba mate!"

Very cool. Another example of Bidirectional parallel pathways is the vagal nerve communication from gut to brain and brain to gut in registering stress responses.
Bought 500 grams of organic Yerba Mate for trying out. So far only 4 grams of taurine daily has noticiably decreased my appetite. Yerba Mate’s effect has been very mild (including second boils).
I am Argentinian living on Australia for years and I keep drinking mate. I T's very easy to get the yerba. Only one of my kids shares the mate with me Mos of the time I have them on my own. Thank you to the person that put the poem. I new it.
I’m new to Yerba Mate, I wasn’t expecting it to be as stimulating as it is. For me it feels better than coffee but in a different way, more focus and clarity, and it’s STRONG and you can definitely over do it! As I found out yesterday after drinking a litre of it strong and iced at work and then made a traditional cup and sipped a litre of that over the evening till bed. Geez! It’s definitely dehydrating and my mouth is sooo dry! And I couldn’t sleep. It’s way stronger than ‘I thought so will drink it in moderation. I can’t drink it like I usually drink say peppermint tea all day. It’s wonderful stuff though.
I've largely switched to both Yerba Mate and Guayusa (from coffee) after having heard this on his other video. I drink 50oz of it throughout the day, and it helps me stay away from eating. I'm taking it for fat loss during exercise when I go to the gym. I just started 2 weeks ago, so lets see how it goes in 6months. 8 tsp in tea bags with 200°F water and it brews nicely with some yellow lemon wedges for flavor!
Definitely gives you a more suttle and controlled increase of energy , unlike coffee which is short lasting and intense , mate gives me energy all day and if you time the consumption of it well generally 10 hours before you sleep, so in the morning it makes your day much more productive with out the jittery feelings and crash-outs coffee gives, mate is a super fuel , best and most healthy source of caffeine , vamos muchachos 🇦🇷, also lots of athletes drink it before events to help the get to their highest potential.
I started drinking Guayasa after one of your podcasts Doc. No sh*t it has been a significant appetite suppressant for me. I have been fasting 18/6 and OMAD, with early morning exercise (I start at 5am). I have dropped 8 lbs in 2 weeks (272 to 264). I know I have to drink lots more water, I'm working on knocking back 32 oz first thing in the am after waking vs going for the black coffee. That has been a helluva habit to break. That cup of coffee in the am is a major crutch.

But then I have to ask...is it my appetite that needs suppressing or just my cravings and the urge to eat? If I only ate when i was hungry I'd have no problem with it.
Im from Paraguay and people drink Terere every single day down here, i personally dont, but probably Argentina and Paraguay would be the best choices if a longitudinal study ever wants to be conducted, and most people actually use terere for hunger suppression
I became aware of Yerba Mata from guitar music I purchased composed by the Argentinian composer Maximo Diego Pujol. The title of the piece is "EL mate del estribo"---translated is "A mate for the stirrup"...it's like saying "One for the road". After finding out what mate is, I decided to buy some a few weeks ago, try it and figure how the music related to the yerba mate. At any rate, I bought more yerba mate, love it!
Thank you Dr. Huberman. You've been my go-to for a while now whenever I need more information on mental health and brain science. I live in the Middle East. I managed to find Yerba Mate teabags by Olinda. However, as with most products on the market shelves, there's no information on how they are processed. It would be very kind of you if you could share what to look for when buying YB so that I don't end up staying up and eating less, only with cancer.
I’m sorry to say that in Uruguay we drink mate all day and we don’t feel full. Anyway it’s an amazing drink, full of antioxidants. And furthermore it’s a ritual for us. In fact Guarani people, who live in Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay, base their day to day in Yerba mate.
im a broke student and just like many other struggling people in my country, argentina, it is used a lot for these reason, it tricks the stomach when you're really hungry but still have work to do
Which ones would be the smoked type? The ones are flavoured, perhaps? I sip the traditional type (for those that have watched the video of powder content in yerba, I use the lowest powder content) My contribution; sipping mate causes addiction. It is a healthy addiction. Also, this may explain why obesity is not so common in Argentina. Plus Fernet. Another miracle of mother nature. Thank you for the video!!! You are the best!

Excellent video, you are top notch as a practitioner and researcher. And, I have an ask of you how you deliver info: your content can be that which requires active absorption. It would greatly help if you took more pauses, especially upon listing points (ie. “Number 1, 2, 3, etc.). 🙏🏻
For the videos he has so far where he doesnt really pause to often, try listening at .75x speed. It doesnt ruin the sound quality too bad and its an easier flow of info
Wow these clips are super useful. I forgot about this info in one of your podcasts. By coincidence I've also found hard exercise had the same effect. Also mixing normal black tea & a little bit of coffee helped to suppress hunger, as opposed to just drinking either one by itself. I dont know why these work for me, is it the same pathway?
I drink a mate everyday, many a day, never have a problem, i stay more awake, have more energy, and i dont eat just for boredom. LOVE Mate.! viva Argentina!
Gooseberry also suppresses appetite. In India we use it while fasting. Also pranayama . I do one session of 20mins and then butyeko breathing exercises for 20mins. This works quite well.
I commented on another video (older one). I'm torn on the GLP1 benefits. Prescription form. It delays/slows gastric emptying and increased postprandial volume. If one is fasting for weight loss or to lower insulin levels, wouldn't this be contra intuative ? Gastroparesis. The weight loss that occurs is from calorie reduction (people are full, nausea, early satiety). Does this affect gut hormones negatively? O love your knowledge and understanding, hopefully you can help me understand. Thanks ❤️
@@shay5025 "all the various study participants". LOL. Not only there is not a single source cited (which is sine qua non when discussing studies), but "all the various study participants" is not even a logical manner in which to describe sample population(s) or study outcomes (at a very, very, very, very, very basic level. i.e., what study? what sample population? what inclusion criteria? what statistical considerations? was it longitudinal? etc.). As in, even a 101 college course can teach you to interpret a published study. Once again, a youtube warrior strikes 🥲

Hello Dr. Huberman, may I have the reference info for the article you are referencing in this talk? Also, I have been trying to figure out (unsuccessfully) why GLP-1 agonists would not cause hypoglycemia non-diabetics. If insulin is increased and glucagon is decreased, I would think hypoglycemia would result. To your knowledge, is there a mechanism that limits this action? Also, do you know why GLP-1 receptors are considered beneficial for the heart?
I am taking Semaglutide Peptide and it most definitely can cause hypoglycemia if taken in too high of a dose for your body. No science, just my experience.
After learning from GLP-1 in yerba mate and guayusa, I tried both and definitely felt the benefits. Guayusa is way smoother energy though, there’s no jitters and literally no crash. Guayusa for the win, for sure
Yerba mate is the only one that I can consume on an empty stomach. Coffee makes my blood sugar spike and drop and I end up dizzy, weak and crabby on an empty stomach and tea makes me vomit unless I'm eating something else.
For me caffine creates anxiety and that raises cortisol and makes me retain fat. Biggest weight gain was in fact when I was drinking yerba mate. I lost most weight when I quit caffeine and vaping - both things made me extremly anxious (especially in the evenings), increased my stress hormone levels and made me put on weight. Now without these, I dont remember anymore what anxiety is and back to being in healthy weight. Also when very anxious, I'd often eat in quick/uncontrolled manner which also promoted weight gain - this when anxiety free, does not happen anymore.

Certainly, Argentina is not a country where people is fat... but I didn't loss weight drinking mate xD If it were like that I would be thin. At least drinking in a mate, if you have an empty stomach is not a good feeling, but if you don't have a mate (porongo) you can dring it like tea, with milk (then it is called mate cocido) I didn't know that it is carcinogenic or that there was a smokey option... Argentina, Brasil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile and Bolivia drink it. It is a tradition from the aborigines. They tested for metals using magnets and it does have metals... like in many tea brands and other foods, so we have to be careful which brand to buy. There are many types of intensities (from mild to intensive taste) In summer many people drink mate with orange juice, and it is a cool drink (it is called Tereré) It would be great if you do a couple of spanish podcasts.
I was born in Argentina. I drink mate but like a tea, from a tea bag. We call it Mate cocido, the tea with a few drops of milk. ... as typical as the other way most Argentinians drink it. I'm the oldest of 5, all my siblings and my parents had mate with the straw.... but me. To this day I have no idea why I was never incline to have mate like most. Mate cocido, with milk or without, is so good too!
Hi Dr Huberman, this information is so exciting. So I want to buy these products asap..can you please suggest a trustworthy brand and the exact name of the products? Thanks 🌝🙏
Hey Mel, if you go on Amazon and search EcoTeas, they have Yerba mate that's great quality. Organic, non-smoked, stem and leaf, loose leaf. It's delicious! Hope that helps.
There are many argentine brands, most popular are Taragui, nobleza gaucha, cruz de Malta, playadito, of all I prefer Cruz de Malta for the taste and also because the leafs are cut in bigger pieces that makes a smother mate experience since its content it's released more slowly
My ex-Mother-in-Law is Argentinian and drinks mate constantly. She barely eats, locks herself away supping on mate all day and her nickname is Loca (from her family). In my opinion, I think she used it badly and would be so hungry when she did eat, it was a frenzied urgent need to eat and she was acting out of control (hence the nickname). She said that it was natural and that in Argentina, they give it to the kids and she gave it to my three year old. My daughter then proceeded to run around like a maniac for hours, we had never seen her like that before. I looked it up and saw that it has more caffeine than regular coffee. I didn’t have a good view of what mate did to someone who drank it regularly for her whole life! She seemed to use it as a crutch and then have a full blown binge when she finally did eat. Seemed to be constantly on a caffeine high in a very unhealthy way and out of control.
Rosamonte apparently produces all their yerba mate organically, but doesn't go in for the certification because of the added costs of doing so, which would then be passed on to those doing the purchasing. This might be true of other brands as well. This seems to be a hardy plant that doesn't need a lot of pesticides.
Dr Huberman I have tried the Yerba Matte as you recommended and it does work at greatly increasing my appetite I also read an article that said the rare new sugar Alulose spikes GPL-1 up to 70 percent. When I put it in the tea WoW I can easily fast till mid to late afternoon without hunger. Do you know of any studies that support the claim alulose does this?

I grow Yerba Mate here in zone 9a. I have 2 trees about 5 ft tall and what's amazing is that we had two 15F winter events in three years with no effect on my Yerba Mate trees (one in-ground and one in a pot with no protection). Yerba Mate is an evergreen so you can enjoy Yerba Mate tea all year long. My Yerba Mate trees/bushes are a great beginner plant because they are drought tolerant and I have had no issues with bugs or diseases (I'm in zone 9a bug and diseases heaven)
where did you buy them? I'm in zone 7 - i am gong to look into this!!! Thanks!

100%. Guayusa is way smoother energy, I find. Better focus, no jitters and literally zero crash. I love it
Good stuff!

I became aware of Yerba Mata from guitar music I purchased composed by the Argentinian composer Maximo Diego Pujol. The title of the piece is "EL mate del estribo"---translated is "A mate for the stirrup"...it's like saying "One for the road".

Which ones would be the smoked type? The ones are flavoured, perhaps? I sip the traditional type (for those that have watched the video of powder content in yerba, I use the lowest powder content)
My contribution; sipping mate causes addiction. It is a healthy addiction. Also, this may explain why obesity is not so common in Argentina.

Not only there is not a single source cited (which is sine qua non when discussing studies), but "all the various study participants" is not even a logical manner in which to describe sample population(s) or study outcomes (at a very, very, very, very, very basic level. i.e., what study? what sample population? what inclusion criteria? what statistical considerations? was it longitudinal? etc.).
Thanks for this. 14 pounds down in a week

At least drinking in a mate, if you have an empty stomach is not a good feeling, but if you don't have a mate (porongo) you can dring it like tea, with milk (then it is called mate cocido)
I didn't know that it is carcinogenic or that there was a smokey option... Argentina, Brasil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile and Bolivia drink it. It is a tradition from the aborigines.
They tested for metals using magnets and it does have metals... like in many tea brands and other foods, so we have to be careful which brand to buy.

Interesante. Dónde puedo leer sobre Rosamonte y sus métodos de producción de yerba mate?
