The T56 Magnum is a godsend. Grannas Racing, the holder of the fastest quarter mile stick shift car on the planet with their Supra, runs a T56 Magnum with stock gear and just set the world record at 7.005 @ 208. No straight cut gears or no-lift-shift or sequential conversion, just a H pattern beating autos in their own game
He has a faceplated liberty gearset in his tho

the subaru sti transmition can also take quite alot. there have been many people put 800 lb/ft through them. there great because you can use it in awd and with some modification fwd and rwd.
and even in reverse. Special shops offer kits to convert these for rear-engine application, even keeping the AWD working. For the use in dune buggies or VW T1 and T2 vans for example

Bro even new from z1 is reasonable last time I checked. But like mentioned above an adapter or kit can really defeat the whole purpose

The TKO 600 and Ford Top loader are quite strong transmissions as well
I was trying to look these up and they were either rare or most variants available were not the strong ones.
Toploaders were tough atleast 1964 to 1973 if it had a clutch peddle a v-8

Out of these option which of them can I use to replace my stock auto. It’s for a project truck that’s gonna be towing a 10k ibs trailer. The rigs “expected weights gonna be around 9k. So 20k ibs dry. Recommendations?😅
If youre gonna do best autos id say mercedes 722.3-722.6 they can take lot of power when stock and when upgraded over 1300hp
722.6 is a beast,that it is auto..the 270cdi 6speed 716.654 is the manual to go with

A lot of those Tremecs used to be dirt cheap back in the day. Got mine factory direct for about 700 USD about 15 years ago. Now they're like 2500-3000 USD. Quite a difference. They do last, tho. Had it for a long time with no real issues other than some leaks.
I remember my dad telling me about the old Chrysler 4-speed gearboxes, and how they were sometimes referred to as the "rock crusher 4 gear" because they were basically indestructible.
Are you sure he wasn't referring to the Muncie M22 Rock-Crusher 4-speed that went into high-performance GM cars in the '60s?
Ford had a super t 10. All the old 4 speed boxes you couldn't kill. I like having 5th gear, but damn the aluminum case trans you just couldn't have fun without having to work on them.
the r154 is known for being made out of glass though isn't it? for drifting atleast
Compared to a CD009 or T56? Yes. Its weak. Compared to the W58 though? Pretty strong.
If you shift a bit slower they last for ages, drag or drift.
The cast aluminum shift forks are the weak link if you're abusing a R series. I run one behind a NA 2.7l, broke a couple shift forks then swapped to the billet unit's from marlin crawler. Been good since.
I'm surprised the V160 wasn't on the list instead.

Aisin AR5 is insane too. Intensely strong but also the cheapest budget beefcake manual for me to JZ or LS, cheaper than going CD009 R154 GS6 T56 etc…
It’s the modern American Aisin R154, they even share parts. Some LS people in Western Canada are ditching their brand new T56’s and TR6060’s for AR5’s.
A 3500# Turbo-LS Colorado broke 3rd gear at 800wheel ftlb. Fabbot LS / Driftmotion 2JZ swap parts for AR5 are very very cheap.
I was considering an AR5 to replace the w58 i currently have in my supra. I just bought a 1jz-vvti and plan on building it up, so ill lukely need something stronger. Gonna have to do some research into different types. I was also looking into the ZF series. Still not sure.
Toyota’s V160/161 is a pretty popular trans as well, it is used in a lot more expensive JZ swaps as well as the TT MK4 Supra. The only issue is that they’re around the $10k mark and usually people pick the T56 over them any day
I suggest you adding gear ratios when talking about gearboxes
MR2 guys will know the Toyota E153 5 speed for power capabilities. 7-800 horsepower capability, more than plenty for any 3SGTE or 2GR swap power goals. They can be bought new from Toyota for $4,000, but can be found used for around $1,500
Fun fact:actually ZF transimissions can even be used in trucks,so they can take a lot torque!!

ZF trans are used in rams trucks to this day.

You can get a T56 for $500 where I live
The T56 might not be standard equipment in any new vehicles, but they are still being produced and sold.
There's plenty more if your willing to settle for 4 speeds but good list!

How about a guide on how to choose the right transmission to turn something like a Honda L15 , Chrysler four cylinder out of a Dodge Neon, Renault Cleon, or similar, for example, round for a rear wheel drive layout for a small hot rod or kit car?

Eaton fuller 18spd transmissions can take a lot more power.
But tend to weigh more than most cars
Sequential one of them monkeys and it'd be a weapon, albeit heavy weapon

Rb25/z32 trans can take a beating they cost between 2-600 usd. They're limited to about 500 ft lbs. They can take little more if you're careful with shock/wheel hop etc.

Nice video, very professional coverage of an odd subject. It pains me to see nice cars drift. (Somehow drag racing doesn't). My preferance is cars and bikes cornering at the limit without "pomp and circumstance". Yeah, we blew your doors off around that corner, so what? Keep it straight and go fast folks!
Is there much different from the GS6-53BZ and the GS6-53DZ
Not really except ratios
BZ is a petrol gearbox and DZ is the Diesel box, so will have longer gears and in theory hold up better

Three things:
1. SCREW the R154. They finicky as they can either be a pile of bolts or a solid transmission. However one thing that they all share is terrible shifting feel.
2. CD009 are great, as I have one for my UZ swap but Holy crap they are heavy!
3. No one gonna mention the AR-5? It's an updated R-Series transmission with a shifter feel of a W-Series and has triple syncros and super robust. Quite a nice option for those in the JZ platform.
I have an AR-5 behind my Colorado four cylinder. That little transmission is a tank.

Mercedes 270cdi 716.654?
That box is capable of handling the insane torque of an om605/606 superturbo,where most people use it
6MT 4WD Getrag 233 on Nissan Skyline GT-R R34. And 6MT RWD Getrag V161 on Toyota Supra.
Rumoured to be the same fundamental gearbox as the Getrag 420G as all 3 were made by Getrag at the same time, but the BMW one didn't get the JDM Icon tax applied to price
Also the tr6060 is very strong
Of course automatics have gotten so much better than the past decade but it still doesn’t give the same experience a manual gives
Don't forget the baby Aisin AR-5. It will handle 400lb of torque.

Naaaaah there are more CD009s and T56s out there than there are people building cars. Also didnt mention the ZF boxes in the GM LFX cars that are strong and super plentiful.

Porsche makes the best gearboxes, manual and automatic, but they can be pricey due to their high quality

Where’s the STI gearbox dude. Those things are known to take like 750hp/~800ft.lbs from the factory. That’s why it’s been around since 2000.

You`ve forgotten to mention Getrag 260 and GS5-39DZ. It`s drifters go-to choices when R154 is way too expensive at the moment of making the build.
The Getrag 260 is incredibly weak, and the much preferred gearbox is the ZF310/320
That said, I never broke my 260, before I upgraded it to a Getrag 420G
