    I have an ST and I would never hate on anyone who owns a Fiesta ST, RS or a Focus ST. We are all part of a unique club and we should encourage and support each other with knowledge and love. I have an idea? Let us adopt the Sister Sledge song "We Are Family" as our club song whenever we get together.

    Took me a while to fully appreciate my ST. My biggest gripe was comparing it to AWD RS's and WRX's. All in all, it really is an amazing car for what it is. (Best in its class I believe)
    I also agree financially. People constantly ask "why didn't you get the RS bro?" And I respond with "do I look like I have an extra 10-15k laying around?" Lol
    Good video man.

      For 3 to 4 grand, the ST can be made quicker than the RS. So performance isn't an issue with the ST. I would argue the engine and drivetrain is stronger and more reliable on the ST, so far.

      James McClendon so from an st1(or even st2) to an rs1, what's the price difference? Quite a bit I'd say. I'm good man. Also I have traded in modded cars before. I'm well aware of what its value will probably be. I'm stuck with this car for a long time anyways haha

    What I've discovered: you show up to a car meet in an ST and everyone laughs "it's just a focus." Show up in an RS and everyone stares in awe 😂 I love my ST though 💘

      Alex Taylor yeah until the ST guy realizes he paid 25k and the RS guy paid 40k for a Focus lol. Those people at the car meets ain't gonna help pay your note!
      Also, the RS is old news at this point. Everyone is swooning over the civic type R these days. Car payments will last a lot longer than the appeal at cars & coffee.

      Definitely not the only reason. I’ve gotten to a point (and age) where I really weigh my options anymore when it comes to a car that’s my daily driver. Once the “new car” feeling wears off I am doing all the same old crap with my car day to day.
      The price gap between an ST and RS is pretty large too. So if you just want something fun but practical as an everyday vehicle I see why people would pick an ST.

      That is a pretty stupid comment. Hell I could have bought two RS if I was so inclined, but I bought an ST. Why? Because in my personal opinion $40k+ for a new hatchback is stupid. The RS is a beautiful and amazing machine, but the price is to much. I feel the same way about the Civic Type-R and it's pricing.

    20k in my brand new '17 ST1. A little over 3k in goodies and now she will whip ass on a new RS for far less cash...yeah, ST for the win in my opinion...just wait til I go 2869 turbo and run 12's for another 2k, still far less than the price of an RS and you won't see an ST that quick coming until it screams past ya. I have owned an ST since they first came out, in 2013, zero problems and I love it. I've been watching the RS and ST line in Europe for a long time, and now we finally have them. I would have got an RS but they said they were not bringing them to the US....lier's... I've been looking at them, but the price is harsh...and the leaking gasket issue is a real turn off. I'll wait until the fix all the issues then think about getting one. That engine is new in the RS, the ST has the tried and true pinto blocked 2.0, a proven race engine for years. Now if we could import the Sierra RS whale tail, or Mk 1 or Mk2.

    • @Gjeebs
      @Gjeebs  6 років тому

      Sharpsdoublerifle that’s how I feel about the RS right now as well. That’s a real issue it is having so I want to wait and see what the fix is and go from there. At the same time the interior is identical minus the seat materials so I feel like if I got another car I would want it to be totally different

    • @kyleatherton88

      Sorry old comments but i came across this. You guys really missed out on some of the best performance fords ever produced. The old sierra and escort rs cosworth's have a legendary following here in the uk. The original whale tail sierra cossie is fetching a £100k nowadays over here 😯. Never see them on the road i havent done for years. I assume all locked away in storage kept in mint condition.
      Also the mk1 focus rs is creeping up in price.
      The mk2 focus st and rs have their cult followers too. My friend had a mk2 st decatted and running full stage 3 many years back when we where barely 21yo. Insurance was astronomical and boy did it drink fuel! It was an animal though it really was! I seen a green mk2 rs on the road just a few weeks ago...that 5 pot volvo engine still sounds 👌. Music to the ears 😁.
      I had a mk7 fiesta a few years back great fun, i currently have mk3 focus running around 300bhp. Its quick although doesnt have that exhaust note we got with the mk2 though. Still great fun!

    I just bought a 2013 stage 2 ST in June from a locally owned dealership. The owner of the dealership is a HUGE car guy who loves Focus STs. After my purchase, I went back to the dealership because the owner wanted to hear what the ST sounded like with the GReddy exhaust I put on it. He had an RS on the lot he wanted me to test drive to see what I thought about it. To be honest, the RS is the better car hands down. However, we both agreed there isn’t a super huge difference between a stock RS and a tuned ST. So if you can’t afford the RS, buy an ST and go stage 2 or 3 if possible. Of course it won’t be an RS, but it’ll be somewhat close to one.

    I can give you a easy answer to why you should buy a ST or a RS. On the used market you can find a ST for 11k-16k and the RS us going to 28k minimum! If the added horsepower and all wheel drive seems worth the extra 12k go for it, but for me It just wasn't.

      K9 JSB I disagree %100...! I'm just being real...I can certainly afford one. As a daily driver, I would never have the opportunity to utilize the performance extras to their full capability on public streets without getting pulled over a few times a week nor is it smart or safe either. That's a fact a fact. Additionally, the cosmetic upgrades; I could selectively spend a few hundred dollars on personal custom options and be completely satisfied with the enhanced esthetics, again, personal factual preference. Lastly, the fuel difference in savings alone, over 5 yesrs, will alone pay for the upgrades you buy for your ST1, 2 or 3. I'm extremely happy with my decision to buy 2018 ST3...!!

    Understated and mature looking, doesn't look like a boy racer car with vast wing and garish colours. Plus, FAR better bang for the buck. With a relatively small outlay you can boost this car to 300BHP with a few basic modifications professionally fitted, and, with an ATB limited slip diff, you can massively stabilise the front end and dial out the torque steer

    My Local Ford dealerships keep contacting me to try out or by an RS. I haven't driven one yet (and I am sure I would want one...thats what happened going from a 2012 Titanium Sedan with a 5spd manual to my 2014 ST). But, let the staff at the dealerships know that I cannot justify the $60,000-$64,000 Canadian for one. I can buy his and hers Cadillac CTS-V's for that money (yeah, like 2008's, but you get the idea). Luckily for me, my ST came in on a trade in on a RS, so I got a 2014 ST3 with only 26,000 kilometers on the odometer, with 2 sets of rims and a couple of aftermatket mods for under $20,000 Canadian. The price premium on cars like the RS and STI in Canada is much higher than down south.

  • @exothermal.sprocket

    Buy an ST1. Aftermarket mods are much better than factory anyway. Get the better motor mount, put a bigger turbo in it, put in an LSD, get it tuned, swap in some forged 17x8 wheels and sticky tires. Make 300+ whp, be quicker than the RS, have less invested, cost less in maintenance and insurance, be more comfortable on the road. I would argue a well tuned ST is more reliable than an RS, has a stronger block and drivetrain overall.
    Not going to tune anything? Fork over the big money and do the RS. Whatever.

    My ST was discounted by 7500 dollars, making it less than half the price of the RS. I like it. I've met RS owners and we both respected each others cars. I wouldn't pretend to be able to beat an RS but that's not the point. A new hot hatch for 20 grand is hard to beat anymore. It's fun when you want and easy to drive as a daily.
    The STs sit for MONTHS new, like you say in the video. I bought my 2018 in October of 2018. You can always get a deal because there are still 2018s sitting. Although for the same reason they've discontinued the ST in the states.

    The RS is more race car vs. the ST is more daily driver. The ST will ride better w/ 18" wheels & a softer suspension. The RS will also be very thirsty if you daily drive it & will cost much more to insure.

    Haven't even finished the video yet, just wanted to say thanks! Early next year will be in the market and I'll either be buying an ST outright (most likely as I need a good DD) or going nuts and financing a low mile RS. Appreciate all the info and video man, keep up the great work!

  • @PapaP86
    @PapaP86 7 років тому

    Without watching it, my reasons are 1) Cheaper 2) More practical daily driver (better mileage, and suspension is much more compliant 3) The ST is already plenty powerful for the street 4) RS has shown to have reliability problem with engine failures, etc.5) Kind of goes with #1, but there are many more incentives available for the ST, 0% financing, cash back rebates, etc
    The only reason in my opinion to get the RS is if you're going to the track fairly regularly and/or have another car as a daily driver. But, it also depends on what you're willing to put up with, and how your commute is as a daily driver. Even as a track car however, the RS is going to need work done to it.
    That being said, I'd opt for an RS over an STI, Civic Type-R, and likely a Golf R(unless it was for daily driving purposes, but I've heard a lot of problems with the Golf-R too). Subaru really needs to get a next gen STI out so there's more competition in the segment.

    I agree, the ST is better value than an RS but its like anything else, its down to affordability. If you can afford an RS, then go for it. I would say though that there is a better argument for paying the difference between an Audi S3, or an Audi RS3.

    I came from the Fiesta ST, wanted a bigger car so was looking at the Focus ST as one option but when I drove it it felt slower than the Fiesta ST. Especially in low speeds. When I drove the RS it immediately felt faster and more agile.
    Also, the RS suspension is, in normal, milder than the Fiesta ST.

    For me, the choice was several reasons. While an RS would have been nice, I couldn't justify the increased cost of the RS (higher initial price over my ST being equipped the same, higher insurance costs on the RS, my insurance company wants too much for the ST as it is, the RS the insurance for me is insane. Ride quality, the ST is livable, but the RS i think would be too harsh daily driving. Fewer color options on the RS. The two cars are both great for what they are intended for.. the ST is a fun daily driver.. The RS is a great car for track use and weekend warrior. Bottom line, buy what is going to be the best for what your going to use it for... The ST is like a phillips screw driver and the RS is like a torx bit driver.. Both are great for what they are intended for.. but are not so great when used for what they aren't intended for.

    I bought the 2016 ST and added the same cat-back Ford Performance exhaust with TRC full round splitters and loving it as my first brand new car. When I had my first 3 month free check up and while waiting the guy who sold me the ST let me take an RS for a spin. I have to say it was awesome - tighter suspension, nicer gearbox and tons of power... the only issue was the extra $25K NZD to upgrade. I am however still really happy with my ST as it still has enough grunt for a burst here and there and sounds really nice with the exhaust upgrade (it was your video about the install that convinced me to get it). Keep up the good work.

      I would drive them both for sure. Before I had my ST I had a 2011 Si coupe. You will love the Si and you will love the ST. I think the ST will give you more raw performance excitement but the Si is extremely efficient and probably just as fun to drive. The huge difference will be the torque. You will find you really have to work the Si for power and with the ST it is always there. The seats in the Si are comfortable and sporty. The ST Recaro's are very aggressive and add a really cool feel to the car. They aren't as good as the Si for day to day use but in the turns there is nothing better.

    It's perfectly legitimate to pick the Focus ST because of fuel economy, budget, but a lot of your other arguments sound like self justification since you haven't even driven an RS. Otherwise I'd argue that if you are to pick an ST, it should be the Fiesta, since that's a much more fun vehicle.

      kickercar why? He's right. I have an RS, I was considering an ST but after adding ST3, it was about $32k at the time and I could get an RS for $36k so I jumped. Buuuuuuut my RS ended up being $42k all said and done because I wanted all the options. Heated steering wheel and seats are awesome in winter.
      One would buy an ST for a softer ride, better gas mileage and a lower price. The RS has none of these qualities. I bought the RA because I think it's a modern classic, will hold value well if I keep it close to stock, and pops during gear changes. Only bad thing about it is ride harshness but slightly lower tire pressures help with that, 38/41 as opposed to 46/46.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 7 років тому +1

      You could swap 18" or 17" wheels and tires on the RS to improve the ride quality. Whatever still clears the brake rotors.
      I have a '15 SE Sedan with 5spd and upgraded the stock 16" wheels. Was debating between 17 and 18". Ultimately went with a quality set of forged 17x8 wheels. Lost 7 pounds of weight off each corner. There's no reason to have the rubber-band thin tires around a set of wheels other than style. Performance in corners is marginally better with the larger wheels, but everywhere else there isn't any performance to be had. They cost a lot more, produce a harsher ride, are more prone to bending in potholes, are louder on the roadway. The thin tire trends are 100% style based. There's a balance. I think based on the looks of my 17" I hit the sweet spot. Your opinion on wheels may vary.
