The Dalek Invasion of Earth is a fantastic and solid First Doctor story. The image of the Daleks invading London is still a chilling sight, and the speech at the very end of the story (which is Susan's departure) is still very touching after almost 50 years

They Keys of Marinus and The Daleks' Master Plan rank pretty high in my list, just because of the scale of the events and diversity of locations and the entire adventure. Not to mention the themes introduced, of course :) I am new to your channel, but I suppose I shall watch from now on. Keep up the good work.

The majority of the errors have been corrected via annotations. As the first of our twelve specials, it - unfortunately - was one of the more rushed. Check out some of the more recent ones and I think you'll be more pleased.
Additionally, you seem like a lifetime Who fan (like Michael), so you should know that you aren't exactly our target audience for these. That said, thanks for watching and commenting!

Doctor Who is a 50-year-old series this year. We're doing an episode every month on each of the Doctors from the series. This month is on the First Doctor, William Hartnell. We explain this in the opening of the video as far as I remember.

Without a doubt my favorite 1st Doctor serial is The Chase. 6 episodes of Daleks, history hopping, and the final departure of Ian & Barbara.

  • @GeekCrashCourse
    @GeekCrashCourse  11 років тому

We were referring to length of serials in the entire classic era of the series in that bit. The Trial of a Time Lord, when counted in its aired/on-screen-credited form and not by the production/fan standpoint, was 14 episodes long. -Michael

It's funny, my first and only exposure to #1 and #2 so far was from The Five Doctors, and my impression from that was 2 seemed like the grouchiest one and 1 seemed gentler! But, you did say 1 mellowed out towards the end of his era. Also, that is a super cute hat Diana is wearing!

If you re-watch, you'll notice that we mention Katarina is the first companion to die. We try to mention significant events/changes as much as we can.
True, we can't mention every single appearance/mention of each Doctor in any media, as that would make our show significantly longer (and probably slightly less engaging). We're trying to prime our viewers for Doctor Who love.
Where's the fun in watching the show if you know every single little detail before you start?

  • @butiamthedoctor

Just to point out, the telesnaps of the missing episodes were not taken by fans, they were taken by a company that television directors and producers could commission, to provide them with a visual portfolio of their work, pre-home video.

Thanks for your concern, but please enable annotations in future viewings of Geek Crash Course content.
Annotated corrections are peppered throughout the video addressing these errors (and more, annoyingly) since January 2013 (for future reference, I'm writing this reply six months later in July).
Additionally, if you look through previous comments, you'll see that your exact complaints have been addressed a minimum of three times each. -Michael

I saw the very first episode of Dr Who. Fortunately, I was only seven at the time, so I am still able to walk :-) The main reason given for the repeat of the first episode the following week (I also watched that), together with the second episode, was the assassination of JFK on November 22 1963. This distraction of viewership (it's said that there were also power cuts in some areas) was considered enough cause to give the show some extra promotion. The stone age story that followed the first episode was rather weak, and the series was undoubtedly saved by the first Daleks adventure. This ultimately resulted in Dalek mania, and kids could be heard emulating Dalek voices in every school playground.

There was a power outage. The outage affected some places, but it certainly wasn't a nationwide problem. The outage has been claimed to be another reason for the re-showing of the first episode. TV was very a different phenomenon in those days, and the gadgets we have nowadays would have been pure sci-fi in 1963.

I got into the classic series entirely by accident, after my Uncle Tom showed me the first three episodes of the 9th Doctor I was hooked onto the show and seeing that the episodes were released in 2005 I decided to get up to date via the Doctor Who Wiki and that's where I found the one piece of Doctor Who history which got me started on the Old Doctor Who... The Cartmel Masterplan.
